In the summer of 2011, Michale and Ria Voelker of Gibson City, IL bought this all original
1939 International Harvester 1/2 ton pickup truck that was tucked away in a barn. That winter,
with the help of Ria’s father (Marving), her brother (Matt), buddy (Justin) and her10 year old son
(Graham), they began the process of rebuilding the truck. They removed all of the original drivetrain, electrical and other miscellaneous parts and installed a 1967 Chevrolet 327 motor with
a chevy transmission and a 9 inch Ford rear-end, along with all new electrical. The project took
all winter and then truck was road-ready by May 2012.
The doors are a tribute to Ria’s 94 year old grandfather, Oscar Voelker. In the 1950s he owned
a corn shelling business and all of his trucks had writing on the doors. Kocher Custom Paint in
Rantoul was able to customize the doors to match the writing that was on her grandfather’s truck
and make it appear that the writing had been on the truck for years. Ria kept the door lettering
a secret so she could surprise her family, especially her grandfather.
Even though the project started out as something to do with her family, Ria says it turned into
so much more. Everyone that sees the truck falls in love with it and it has become a very popular
prop for people to use during photo shoots! And in case you’re wondering... it's not for sale!
