Learn basic stroke fundamentals and then work on improving them through lots of different drills, games, and fun competitions. It’s great to see kids start to play tennis. My goal is to instill in them a love of the game that lasts a lifetime. I wanted to offer a program that runs throughout most of the summer. I am hoping that the option of one or two mornings a week will work well with families’ schedules, vacations, etc. We will have a number of assistants helping out and that will enable us to divide up participants into groups based on playing experience. Those that need to learn the basics can spend more time doing that, and those who have been playing for a while will be part of more advanced activities. In addition, for kids age ten and under we will use smaller and lighter racquets and balls that are larger and bounce more slowly. That equipment makes learning so much easier. I’m hoping that all of the kids in the program will then get out and play with friends and their families. I would love to see lots of people out on the courts all summer long! Sessions are from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. This total-body conditioning class takes you through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength and range of movement which will make it easier for you to keep doing the things you like to do. While many of our exercises are done seated, we do spend some time on our feet with our chair for balance support. All of this stretching and weightlifting is done to familiar music, so it’s fun, and it’s totally okay to sing along if you want. This class is designed primarily for active older adults, but is also a great class for people who are just starting to exercise, regardless of their age. Please bring a set of light hand weights or water bottles that you can get your hands around. Most people choose something in the 2-5 pound range. You will also need to bring an elastic tubing resistance band with handles. (The yellow one available at Wal-Mart is a good choice.) The Thera-Band you got at physical therapy can be substituted for the resistance band. Bring what you’ve got, after the first class you’ll know if it works for you or not. Our leader is Jane Francoeur, a certified group exercise instructor with over five years of experience working with older adults. Jane understands that visiting is an important part of why you go to a class, so she’s always there 15 minutes before class time to make it easier for you to catch up with your friends and classmates. The fee for each class is $4.00. If you like, you can purchase a punch card for all six classes for $22.50. tours April 24, 2015 WPRA Tickets Brewers VS Cleveland Indians The Merrill Park and Recreation Department will participate again this year in selling WPRA Tickets. Bob Kraemer wrote in his mission statement that he learned the best way to change the public’s perspective is to start with the children, that is why he created several community service programs aimed at kids. Each year the Merrill Park and Recreation Department has about 150 kids involved in the Summer Playground Program and we feel incorporating Badges and Bulls Eye and Gutter Buster, will be a great opportunity to get both organizations and the kids working together as a team. The Merrill Park and Recreation Department and The Merrill Police Department were awarded a three year grant through the Cops and Kids Foundation. Lincoln Lanes, Lincoln County Sportsman Club, Wendorf Bus and a few other organizations will be helping out with sponsoring the program. the Badges and Bulls Eye program and the Gutter Busters program. Badges and Bulls Eyes is a program designed to teach kids archery. This program gets kids active in a fun and unique manner. Archery teaches kids discipline, safety, and patience all while having fun and interacting with cops. Gutter Busters is designed to teach kids bowling. The idea is to challenge kids and teach them the meaning of sportsmanship, integrity, and respect for others. Bowling is a relatively inexpensive and widely available activity that provides kids with a positive alternative to getting in trouble. The mission of the Cops and Kids Foundation is to break down barriers, and teach police officers and citizens to trust and depend on each other. Citizens and the police have the same goals….we both want safe neighborhoods and a better place to live. President of the Cops and Kids In February of 2015, Dawn Smith, Administrative Assistant for the Merrill Park and Recreation Department, came across the Cops and Kids Foundation. After reviewing the Cops and Kids Foundation goals and missions Smith decided this would be the perfect fit for the Merrill Park and Recreation Department and The Merrill Police Department. Police Chief Ken Neff agreed that this would be the perfect way for the Merrill Police Department to get actively involved with the Merrill Park and Recreation Department and also a great opportunity to show kids that police officers are here to be friends with the youth and serve as positive role models. The goal is also to improve the image of uniformed officers in the eyes of kids, parents and the community.
