Again this year you will have
four routes to choose from: the
surrounding Hershey area (14.7
miles); Ft. Indiantown (31.2
miles); Mt. Gretna (37.3
miles); and a (6.6-mile) flat
Family Fun ride through the
Hershey neighborhoods. A
bonus 9.7 "hill loop" will be
available after the Mt. Gretna/
Cornwall Elementary School
rest stop.
This event is open to the general public, and all bicycle
riders are welcome. Participants must wear helmets, and
the ride will be held rain or
shine. Registration will begin at
7:00 AM, with a “show and
go” start between 7:30 and
noon Registration fee is $25
per rider.
All proceeds from this Ride go
to support the Pennsylvania
State Police Historical, Educational & Memorial Center, a
non-profit organization committed to the preservation of
the history of the Pennsylvania
State Police from 1905 to present AND a variety of community service ride/run/walk projects around the Greater Central Pennsylvania area. Past
recipients are the Capital Area
Greenbelt Association, Cumberland Valley Rail Trail, Jon
Eshenour Foundation, Lancaster Park and Recreation Department / Conewego Rail Trail,
Lebanon Valley Rail Trail and
Recycle Bicycle of Harrisburg.
The Family Fun Ride
(registration and the start begins at 10AM) fee is $10 per
adult and $5 per child under the
age of eight. Registration fee
for all riders includes food,
support, and a great day of
riding.

has agreed to be sort of our
"video editor in chief" and will
be creating and uploading videos on various topics of interest
such as upcoming events, bicycling tips and tours, etc. You

done as well - just upload it to

After driving to the beautiful
Desmond Great Valley Hotel,
your SPRING FLING will
consist of multiple day ride
The Sunset Grill at the beautiful
Desmond Hotel
offerings where you can bicycle throughout the countryside
of northern Chester County, in
and around the Valley Forge
National Park area as well as
along the Schuylkill River
basin. Friday's ride (5/14) starts
at 10:00am with Saturday and
Sunday's rides starting at
9:00am.
The cost is $139.50 per person
(double occupancy). There will
be no charge for sharing in the
fellowship of your other HBC
riders for the weekend. Space
is limited so don't be left behind. Fee includes:
-Two night's lodging at The
Desmond Great Valley
Hotel;
-Multiple day ride options to
chose from including daily
HBC lead C & C+ rides
and a number of selfguided routes;
-Detailed cues sheets of the
routes;
-Hospitality in the late afternoon after we complete
Friday's & Saturday's
rides.

TOUR
As of Feb. 24, there were
only 6 rooms still available
in the air conditioned
units. However, additional
townhouse units are
available that are not air
conditioned. Air
conditioning is rarely
needed at night in the
Finger Lakes area, but
there are never any
guarantees with the
weather.
We're going back to the Finger
Lakes area to enjoy the pleasant riding, spectacular scenery
and fine wines. Once again we
will be staying at HobartWilliam Smith College in Geneva, which is on the northern
end of Seneca Lake. The accommodations are airconditioned townhouse units
with 4 or 5 single bedrooms, 2
bathrooms, a living room and a
kitchen.
(It is possible, but not easy, to
move 2 single beds into one
bedroom.) Each person will be
given a packet of cue sheets
and maps for routes ranging
from 20 miles to 90 miles. You
can choose to ride with a designated group leader or head out
on the route of your choice.
The only restriction is that you
not ride alone, since no sag will
be available. Also, if you plan
to ride on a designated group
ride, you should be capable of
doing a 12 mph pace for 50
miles.
The cost is $105 per person for
3 nights lodging (Thurs, Fri. &
Sat.), 3 breakfasts, bed linens, a
pillow and a towel. We have
reserved enough townhouses to
accommodate 50 people. A $25
deposit is due by March 31 and
the balance is due May 7, 2010.
It may be possible to stay extra
nights at the college at a cost of
$100 per townhouse per night.

If you prefer motel accommodations, feel free to contact me
for recommendations. Prices
range from $58 to $150 or
more depending on location.
The only charge assessed to
those staying off campus will
be for meals on campus, if
desired, and copying costs for
maps and cue sheets. Even if
you are staying off campus,
you
are
asked
to complete a registration form
so that I can be sure that I can
have your contact information
and so I'll know how many ride
packets are needed.

BIKES FOR CHILDREN IN NEED
Operation Wildcat in the Mechanicsburg Area School District is an organization consisting of parents who are working
to pool the resources of the
community to help local students and families in
need. This is a wonderful
organization that operates entirely on the generosity of local
families and businesses.
We have found that many of
the students in our community
were in need of bicycles. Last
year we gave away 50
bikes. On Saturday, April 17
from 1:00 to 4:00 we will be
holding our third annual "Bike
Repair Day"at Storage Depot
on the Cumberland Parkway in
Mechanicsburg. We are looking for volunteers who can help
inflate tires, lubricate chains,
and look for bent or broken
parts. If you are interested in
assisting us, please contact

Please join the Tour de Cure
challenge this year in Boiling
Springs on Saturday, May 22.
The annual road bike fundraiser meets the need of every
level of experience. Road
routes exist from the 9K family
ride for young participants to
enjoy, to the SAG supported
25K, 50K or 100K events complete with pre-established rest
stops.
No bike, no problem. There
will be 25 spinning cycles in
the school gymnasium with a
motivated instructor from
Gold's Gym to lead the
classes. If you choose to participate in the spin-a-thon, a
volunteer will contact you to
reserve a bike for one of the
four planned sessions.
After your spin session or bike
tour, you will be treated to a
hot meal, music and a massage.
The Mountain Bike Challenge
is on Sunday, June 6. Participants will meet at the Big Flat
ATV lot in Michaux State Forest. Please note that the route is
single-track, 16 miles long, and
not suitable for beginning riders. You should have some
experience in riding off-road
with rocks, logs, and an occasional stream to cross. Safety is
paramount.
Please check the official ADA
website for details about registering your ride as an individual or team member. Donations
may be made on line as well,
so that you can spend training
time on your bike and not collecting money from your supporters. Remember that registration fees do not count toward
the fund-raising minimum of
$150 and are not refundable.
Encourage a friend, come with
your family, and bring a crowd
to join you during this year's
Tour de Cure.

JANET A. POINTUS: WHO WAS SHE
A N D H OW D O E S S H E A F F E C T M E ?
In this issue of the Spokesman, you will see a Harrisburg Bicycle Club Membership Application/Renewal
Application. One of the line
items listed in the Annual
Dues section is Optional
“HBC Janet A. Pontius
Safety Fund” Contribution.
You may or may have not
added a contribution to your
annual dues for the Janet A
Pontius Safety Fund, but did
you wonder why the fund
exists, what its purpose is or
why you should consider a
contribution?
Janet A. Pontius was a
member and the secretary of
HBC in 1976 who enjoyed
riding her bicycle – the
same as most of us. On
October 15 of that year, a
bright sunny day, Janet was
struck and killed by the side
mirror of a van while riding
midday on Colonial Road in
Lower Paxton Township.
She was an experienced
rider, the weather conditions
were excellent and by all
indications, she was doing
everything according to the
safety rules for bicycle riding. It was a tragedy and
the driver of the van was
charged with involuntary
manslaughter. A group of
concerned citizens established a Janet A. Pontius
Safety Foundation to honor
her memory, and to try to
promote safety measures to
help avoid such tragedies in
the future. Initially, the
Foundation made an annual
Safety Award consisting of
a monetary award and a
suitable certificate close to
the time of Janet’s birthday,
April 28th, to a nominee
who exhibited exemplary
bicycle safety. Since that
time, the HBC has established the Janet A. Pontius
Safety Fund that has been
used to promote safety
measures for bicycle riders.
In the past, the monies from
the Fund have been used to
offer discounts on the purchase of bicycle helmets, for
the ID/Insurance stickers to
be adhered to the inside of
helmets, to purchase helmets for underprivileged
children, for the ID tags that
were offered free to mem-
bers in 2006, for the discounted RoadID gift cards,
and for other bicycle safety
measures.
HBC is again sponsoring
the Helmet Drive this May
by offering a $10.00 coupon
toward the purchase of a
new ANSI or SNELL certified helmet from participating bike shops. Watch for
the coupon and use it from
May 1st through May 31st,
2010. And, when you renew your HBC membership, please consider a donation to the Janet A. Pontius Safety Fund. You will
benefit by it!

The Ride 2 Recovery Cyclefest
will be a 50 mile ride from
Dillsburg, Pa to Gettysburg, Pa
and back on May 8th, 2010.
The ride will begin and end at
the Dillsburg American Legion
at 301 South U.S. Highway 15
in Dillsburg, Pa 17019. Check
in will be from 7:00am to
8:00am. Riders may start at
8:00am with the last rider on
the route at 8:30am. The route
will be closed at 3:00pm. The
minimum fundraising requirement is $75.00. Registration
can be done online through
www.ride2recovery.com or
www.dillsburgpacyclefest.ning.
com or in person May 8th in
Dillsburg. From the Dillsburg
Cyclefest website you are able
to view videos of Ride 2 Recovery Challenges, register,
and view a map of the route.
The Ride will be supported by
the American Legion. The
Legion Riders will provide
motorcycle support and assistance along the route. The
Gettysburg Area High School
will be the midpoint rest stop
with the restrooms available.
All riders will receive a Ride 2
Recovery T-shirt for participating. Please be sure to look at
the other incentive awards for
fundraising after you register
for the ride.

Learn more about the 'art' of safe cycling’ by taking Bill Hoffman's
Traffic Skills 101 in Lancaster in April. Bill is a very experienced
instructor, specially trained and certified by the League of American
Bicyclists. There will be three sessions and you will need your
bicycle and bicycle helmet for each because the focus of the course is
vehicular-style cycling, proven to be the safest and most efficient
way to ride and the best way to learn this technique is with Bill's
able coaching as you ride:
* April 7 (Wed.), 6:30 to 9:30pm;
* April 10 and 24 (Sat.), 9:00am to 12:30pm

14-16 will be accepted if enrolled with an adult guardian. Call

Stauffer Mansion), 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster (Manheim Twp.). This is
about 3/4 mile south of US 30 on PA 501/US 222.
And here's a little extra incentive … HBC will reimburse any HBC

complete this Smart Cycling Program for reimbursement.

The Lebanon Valley is a great
bicycling destination. Round
the Valley 2010 offers bicyclists great scenery and pleasant cycling. Participants can
choose a century around the
perimeter of Lebanon County,
a metric century and a 25 mile
ride. This is a beautiful ride
with exciting vistas and well
supported rest stops. An excellent summer ending ride.

The SPRING FLING is more than just an early season event. This year it includes six scheduled HBC rides (C+ & C each day) as mentioned

come for the overnights and ride on Saturday and/or on Sunday, others come Friday evening and participate in the rest of the weekend

Here's a riding opportunity for all those members who own one of the Surly brand of bicycles. A number of club member have purchased Surly's over the past
few years, so why not have a ride dedicated to that idea. However, having any other brand of bike will not exclude you from participating in the ride. But,
keep this thought in mind that the Surly owners might have a little bit of a „surly' outlook on things! [pun intended]. The plan of the ride is to eat breakfast/lunch
at Fay's in Carlisle. The route most likely will meander a bit getting to and from Carlisle per the leader‟s whims. The pace and mileage of the ride will be adjusted to meet the early-season needs of the participants.

It is too late to save your taxes now, so come for an easy early season Rail Trail ride on the nicest trail in our area. Join us April 17 at 10 AM in the Seven Valleys
trail head parking lot on the York Heritage Rail Trail. This is a great chance for D social riders to try out a Rail Trail ride they can handle easily. We will do an
easy 8 mile ride to Railroad for lunch then return. From route 30 on the west side of York turn south on route 616 for 5.8 miles then straight onto route 214 for 0.3
miles. Turn left on Church Street for 0.3 miles then enter the marked trail head parking lot on the left. The average high temperature for this date in Seven Valleys is 65F. For the GPS equipped the trail head is at N 39 51.458, W 76 45.923 .
