Philadelphia 1775: Time to Choose
Cascade Chautauqua Presents
In May of 1775, Dr. Benjamin Franklin returned to his home in
Philadelphia from a ten-year diplomatic assignment in London. He
did everything in his power to avert a civil war between Britain and
her North American colonies. He failed. Upon his arrival, Pennsylvania
appointed him to be a delegate to the Second Continental Congress.
He has been silent for six weeks before addressing the citizens of
Philadelphia on June 27th. You are invited to relive that moment as Dr.
Franklin tells the citizens of Philadelphia why it is now time to choose
sides in the civil war. Franklin scholar Steven Nousen presents this
interactive program in period costume. Audience participation is not
only encouraged, it is essential.

Great American Playwrights
Dennis Gilmore, MA
Mondays, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
October 31-December 5
CSUSB Palm Desert Campus
Playwriting is the art form in which the
story is revealed to an audience through
dramatic, comedic and/or musical
interpretation by actors. Since the dawn
of civilization, man has used theatre to
reflect the human/social condition, inspire
thought about social conventions and
provide emotional catharsis. This course
will explore selected works of six American
Pulitzer prize winning playwrights and
the circumstances that contributed to the
unique “voice” of each.
About the Instructor
Dennis is executive director emeritus of
the Henderson County Performing Arts
Center in Athens, Texas. For 27 years, he
led the theater in producing live programs
and new program development, including
youth and senior theatre companies. Dennis
directed over 250 adult productions and
more than 150 youth productions during
his tenure. He was a professor of theatre and
speech and was technical director of the
theatre department for ten years at Trinity
Valley Community College. He is also an
accomplished actor, performing in many
stage productions.
Plato & His World of Forms
Michael McDonald, PhD
Tuesdays, 10:00 a.m.-noon
November 1-December 6
CSUSB Palm Desert Campus
Discover Plato with a Plato scholar! As
a philosopher, Plato is the source of our
notion of archetypes, the original pattern
or model from which all things of the
same kind are copied or on which they are
based. Explore Plato’s theory of forms in
depth, his influential description of Atlantis
and the Platonic dialogues. Additionally
look at the life and death of Plato’s mentor
Socrates who was both a real person and
a literary creation of Plato and practice
Socratic questioning in class.
About the Instructor
Dr. McDonald attended San Diego State
University and the University of Hawaii
where he earned his PhD in 1995. He reads
Greek and is a specialist in Plato and Greek
philosophy and drama. Michael has broad
interests and has taught classes at CSUSB
on Thomas Jefferson and early American
history. At Prescott College in Arizona, he
taught Western and Chinese philosophy,
emphasizing the Chinese Book of Changes.
Michael is a great believer in lifelong
learning and has taken over sixty college
level courses in the last ten years.
Hamilton & Jefferson: Their Ideas
Live On
Sally Mackle, MPA
Tuesdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
November 1-December 6
CSUSB Palm Desert Campus
This course will examine the lives of
two highly influential men who came
from vastly different backgrounds but
were both essential participants in
the founding of our nation. Thomas
Jefferson is well known as the author of
the Declaration of Independence. Lesser
known is Alexander Hamilton, a brilliant
immigrant whose political ideas became
part of our Constitution. We’ll examine
the lives and political ideas of these two
important political figures and how they
continue to influence U.S. politics in the
twenty-first century.
About the Instructor
Sally holds a BA in history and political
science, and a master’s degree in public
administration. A former high school
teacher, she later taught at the University
of Washington where she was assistant
dean in the Evans School of Public Affairs
and Governance. Sally has worked as paid
staff on two political campaigns. As a
member of the League of Women Voters,
she was actively involved in study groups
that included taxation policy, economics
and government and a statewide initiative
campaign on taxes.
From Premise to Story
Frank Furino
Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m.-noon
November 2-December 7
CSUSB Palm Desert Campus
This six-week creative writing class will
demonstrate how one premise can lead to
multiple and radically different story ideas.
Former Hollywood writer and playwright
Frank Furino will provide participants with
a choice of story premises which they will
then individually title and expand into a 500
word story with main characters, beginning,
middle & end. The top ten, as chosen by
a select panel, will be read aloud by the
authors at an Osher Writer’s Circle.
About the Instructor
Frank brings twenty-five years of Hollywood
experience to his Osher courses, including
writer/producer credits for major hit shows
Dynasty, Dallas, General Hospital, Falcon
Crest, News Years Rockin’ Eve and more.

creative writing at UCLA and is a member
of the Rancho Mirage Cultural Commission.
Frank is a successful playwright and is
currently working on his first novel.

Paul S. Marchand, JD
Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
November 2-December 7
CSUSB Palm Desert Campus
We lionize dissenters while at the same time
marching them off to jail. We tap our toes to
the strains of the Dixie Chicks while trashing
their CDs. Explore the often polarizing
issues that arise in American society when
the public is divided on significant issues.
Review such intriguing and often divisive
developments as the Alien and Sedition Acts,
Lincoln’s crackdown on dissent during the
Civil War, the Espionage Act and the national
security legislation of the postwar period and
our current post-9/11 security state.

Become more aware of how language
functions in contemporary culture. Today
we quickly access multiple visuals and
words to make sense of what we read, hear
or see. Being immersed in information
is not the same as comprehending
its messages. Visual and verbal
communication conveys information and
news that allow us to make informed
decisions and develop ideas and opinions.
During our class discussions we will look
at how author, subject and audience
interact in advertising, politics and social
relationships.
About the Instructor
For 30 years, Ilene taught literature and
writing courses for teachers at CSU
Northridge. In addition she was the writing
programs coordinator for the CSUN
Learning Resource Center. Ilene later taught
web design and developed online teaching
protocols. Although she officially retired in
2010, Ilene continues to work with students
and faculty in the Tutoring and Academic
Skills Center at College of the Desert. In her
spare time she volunteers at the McCallum
Theatre and for Brandeis University.
