A wide variety of courses are offered each quarter, including topics in the arts and humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. In addition to taking fascinating courses and participating in fun events, many of our members also volunteer. There are lots of flexible options to share your time and talents in a way that meets your interests and schedule. We rely on the active engagement and leadership of our members. Please consider where you might fit in. Ambassadors Special Interest Groups This easy, short-term opportunity includes tasks like student sign-in, making general announcements to the class, handing out and collecting course evaluations, etc. We also appreciate volunteers who can assist the instructor with technology. Training is provided. Perhaps you’d like to coordinate an informal discussion group to explore a specific topic of interest to you (and likely to others). As an interest group coordinator, you can determine the discussion platform, frequency and location. Training and support are provided to help you get started. As a member of this committee, you will provide critically important guidance on course and instructor selection, including new program development. The ultimate volunteer experience! Philadelphia 1775: Time to Choose Cascade Chautauqua Presents In May of 1775, Dr. Benjamin Franklin returned to his home in Philadelphia from a ten-year diplomatic assignment in London. He did everything in his power to avert a civil war between Britain and her North American colonies. He failed. Upon his arrival, Pennsylvania appointed him to be a delegate to the Second Continental Congress. He has been silent for six weeks before addressing the citizens of Philadelphia on June 27th. You are invited to relive that moment as Dr. Franklin tells the citizens of Philadelphia why it is now time to choose sides in the civil war. Nixon Presidential Library & Museum Escorted by Colonel Jack Brennan, a witness to history Tuesday, January 17 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. $99 per person (includes coach transportation, guided museum tour, lunch, stop at the Mission Inn) Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum Join us for this private, guided tour of the newly updated Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda. The museum includes the memorial sites of President and Mrs. Nixon, the President’s birthplace, the First Lady’s Garden, and Marine One, the presidential helicopter. Inside the museum, you can explore interactive exhibits of Nixon’s life and presidency, see the President’s limousine, and visit a replica of the White House East Room. About Colonel Brennan Colonel Jack Brennan was a decorated Marine Corps commander in Vietnam, and in 1968 was selected to become the first Marine Corps Aide to the President. He served in the White House during the entire Nixon administration, and was chief of staff to President Nixon after he left office. Jack later returned to the White House and served as director of administrative operations under George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and served in various roles under Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan. Colonel Brennan was present during a number of significant and historic events during the Nixon Administration, and graciously shares his unique viewpoint and witness to history. Discover the fascinating but little known history of the World War II Navy Base at the Salton Sea and its post-war use by the Atomic Energy Commission. Extensively illustrated with historical photographs. About the Instructor A retired community college teacher and administrator, Sid currently teaches full-time for Cal State San Bernardino. He is a serious enthusiast of anything military, aviation, or desert history. He’s given many lectures throughout the Coachella Valley on aviation and military history. It’s fundamentally about health. Though many books on nutrition are based on garbage science, there are certainties about what is good and what is bad for us. This course focuses on the everyday, realworld implications of the science that helps us live well and live long. About the Instructor Larry is a retired corporate manager and former chief executive who started and managed one of the very early hedge funds. When he retired from business, he was appointed a professor of finance in the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Larry is a selfproclaimed physics nerd, avid hiker, and so-so bridge player. You’ll never look at that attic treasure in the same way after this class. About the Instructor Cash Baxter is a fine arts painter, art historian and world traveler. He is an awardwinning, Broadway producer/NY director. Chosen by Richard Rodgers to direct two Japanese productions of “The Sound of Music,” Baxter was awarded the Chunichi Theatre Award, the Japanese equivalent of Broadway’s Tony Award. He founded the Musical Theatre Workshop at Southern Illinois University and was artist-inresidence at several universities throughout the country. This is Cash’s twelfth year teaching with the Osher Institute at CSUSB Palm Desert Campus. About the Instructor Gary has enjoyed fascinating careers as an award-winning educator, political speechwriter, playwright, director, producer, performer and entertainment journalist. He is a two-time recipient of the Desert Theatre League’s award for best original writing. Gary is in his twentyninth year teaching English and speech at College of the Desert. He also teaches courses at the Art Institute of California and writes the weekly “Curtain Time” column for Desert Entertainer magazine. Alaska: Its History and Highlights David Harris, historian, tour guide, lecturer Wednesday, October 19 10:00 a.m.-noon CSUSB Palm Desert Campus Around 14,000 BC, nomads crossed the Bering land bridge into what is now western Alaska. Explore this unique northern state and its incredible history. Join the famous Klondike Gold Rush that drew 100,000 prospectors to the Yukon in 1896. Travel the Iditarod Trail, a 2,300 mile system of winter trails that first connected ancient Alaska native villages. Learn the history, the culture and the tales as big as the state itself. About the Instructor David has drawn upon his love of history as a tour guide at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the Hearst Castle. He is also a guest lecturer on cruise ships, at conferences and has presented to a variety of service organizations in Southern California. David combines his passions for history, travel and entertainment to create highly enjoyable visual presentations about the places and people he’s experienced in his many adventures around the world. When a medical emergency occurs, you may need to serve as the first responder for a loved one until help arrives. This workshop will help you be prepared. Having the right information and taking the right action can prevent a minor medical situation from becoming a major medical crisis. You’ll learn how to respond in the case of a stroke, heart attack, head injury, broken bone, choking and more. Mark Guerrero, BA, singer, songwriter, music historian Friday, October 21 10:00 a.m.-noon CSUSB Palm Desert Campus Los Angeles was a focal point in the development of Chicano music. Review the history of this unique style of music from its start in the pre-rock era of the 1940s. Learn about such famous artists as Ritchie Valens, Trini Lopez, Los Lobos and Lalo Guerrero, the instructor’s father, who is considered the “Father of Chicano Music” and who resided here in the Coachella Valley. Musical genres including swing, rock, Latin rock and punk will be covered. About the Presenter Sue was hired as the director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in February 2015. She holds a BS in business management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and an MS in educational leadership from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Her background is primarily in marketing and program management, with the last 15 years in higher education. Sue is passionate about lifelong learning and is excited to be leading our OLLI. About the Instructor Barbara’s career in nursing and emergency medical response began in 1971. She helped bring the 911 service to El Paso, Texas and has taught at El Paso Community College and the University of Texas, El Paso. She also owned and operated Basic Life Support School in El Paso for 18 years. Barb is a Certified Community Response Team trainer and a registered nurse licensed in California and New York. Join our email list for the latest Osher news and events. About the Instructor Mark began playing in rock & roll bands at age 12, and led the popular East Los Angeles band Mark & the Escorts. He recorded as a solo artist and with his group Tango. His songs have also been recorded by artists such as Herb Alpert, Trini Lopez, Chan Romero, and his father, Lalo Guerrero. As a Chicano and East L.A. music historian, Mark has written over a hundred articles, hosted an Internet radio show, been a guest on numerous radio and television programs, consulted for museums and lectured at universities. pdc.csusb.edu/osher November 20 is OLLI night at WACD. Since the dawn of civilization, man has used theatre to reflect the human/social condition, inspire thought about social conventions and provide emotional catharsis. This course will explore selected works of six American Pulitzer prize winning playwrights and the circumstances that contributed to the unique “voice” of each. About the Instructor Dennis is executive director emeritus of the Henderson County Performing Arts Center in Athens, Texas. For 27 years, he led the theater in producing live programs and new program development, including youth and senior theatre companies. Dennis directed over 250 adult productions and more than 150 youth productions during his tenure. He was a professor of theatre and speech and was technical director of the theatre department for ten years at Trinity Valley Community College. He is also an accomplished actor, performing in many stage productions. Plato & His World of Forms Michael McDonald, PhD Tuesdays, 10:00 a.m.-noon November 1-December 6 CSUSB Palm Desert Campus Discover Plato with a Plato scholar! As a philosopher, Plato is the source of our notion of archetypes, the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on which they are based. Explore Plato’s theory of forms in depth, his influential description of Atlantis and the Platonic dialogues. Additionally look at the life and death of Plato’s mentor Socrates who was both a real person and a literary creation of Plato and practice Socratic questioning in class. About the Instructor Dr. McDonald attended San Diego State University and the University of Hawaii where he earned his PhD in 1995. He reads Greek and is a specialist in Plato and Greek philosophy and drama. Michael has broad interests and has taught classes at CSUSB on Thomas Jefferson and early American history. At Prescott College in Arizona, he taught Western and Chinese philosophy, emphasizing the Chinese Book of Changes. Michael is a great believer in lifelong learning and has taken over sixty college level courses in the last ten years. Hamilton & Jefferson: Their Ideas Live On Sally Mackle, MPA Tuesdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m. November 1-December 6 CSUSB Palm Desert Campus This course will examine the lives of two highly influential men who came from vastly different backgrounds but were both essential participants in the founding of our nation. Thomas Jefferson is well known as the author of the Declaration of Independence. Lesser known is Alexander Hamilton, a brilliant immigrant whose political ideas became part of our Constitution. We’ll examine the lives and political ideas of these two important political figures and how they continue to influence U.S. politics in the twenty-first century. About the Instructor Sally holds a BA in history and political science, and a master’s degree in public administration. A former high school teacher, she later taught at the University of Washington where she was assistant dean in the Evans School of Public Affairs and Governance. Sally has worked as paid staff on two political campaigns. As a member of the League of Women Voters, she was actively involved in study groups that included taxation policy, economics and government and a statewide initiative campaign on taxes. From Premise to Story Frank Furino Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m.-noon November 2-December 7 CSUSB Palm Desert Campus This six-week creative writing class will demonstrate how one premise can lead to multiple and radically different story ideas. Former Hollywood writer and playwright Frank Furino will provide participants with a choice of story premises which they will then individually title and expand into a 500 word story with main characters, beginning, middle & end. The top ten, as chosen by a select panel, will be read aloud by the authors at an Osher Writer’s Circle. About the Instructor Frank brings twenty-five years of Hollywood experience to his Osher courses, including writer/producer credits for major hit shows Dynasty, Dallas, General Hospital, Falcon Crest, News Years Rockin’ Eve and more. He was also staff director with ABC News covering political conventions, space launches and major news events and later owned an advertising agency. He taught creative writing at UCLA and is a member of the Rancho Mirage Cultural Commission. Frank is a successful playwright and is currently working on his first novel. Consent & Dissidence in America Paul S. Marchand, JD Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m. November 2-December 7 CSUSB Palm Desert Campus We lionize dissenters while at the same time marching them off to jail. We tap our toes to the strains of the Dixie Chicks while trashing their CDs. Explore the often polarizing issues that arise in American society when the public is divided on significant issues. Review such intriguing and often divisive developments as the Alien and Sedition Acts, Lincoln’s crackdown on dissent during the Civil War, the Espionage Act and the national security legislation of the postwar period and our current post-9/11 security state. About the Instructor Born and raised in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills, Paul Marchand was a Coachella Valley visitor and resident for more than a decade before being elected in 2002 to the first of two terms on the Cathedral City Council. Since 2010, Paul has taught a number of courses for the Osher Institute at CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus. Paul earned his bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and his law degree from the Valparaiso University School of Law. He has been a licensed attorney since 1989. The book provides the topic background, informative maps and detailed graphs, in addition to suggested reading and research materials. Through film clips and discussion, we will examine the psychology of fear as represented by the premier actors, directors and writers in the horror, mystery and suspense genres. These masters of horror and villainy viscerally scared us and entertained us at the same time: Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi, Sydney Greenstreet, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Alfred Hitchcock, James Cameron, Ridley Scott, William Castle, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson and many more. It’s Complicated: Romantic Entanglements in Film Bernard (Butch) Epps, MFA Fridays, 1:00-4:00 p.m. October 28-December 16 (no class November 11 or 25) CSUSB Palm Desert Campus Relationships don’t come easy in this exploration of romantic entanglements as depicted through various film genres that include screwball comedy, film noir, melodrama and more. Together, we will discuss the elements of genre as well as the social and personal obstacles to happiness the characters face in each film. Films scheduled to be screened include The Philadelphia Story (1940), The Big Sleep (1946), A Place In the Sun (1951), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), A Touch of Class (1973), and A Little Romance (1979). Come for the film; stay for the discussion. About the Instructor Bernard (Butch) Epps received his MFA degree from the UCLA Department of Film and Television’s Independent Producers Program where he focused on story development and working with screenwriters. He served as the academic liaison to the high profile professional faculty, including studio heads, development executives and others. Since stepping away from the day-today rigors of the film industry, Butch has been teaching film appreciation courses while developing a book on Orson Welles’ Mercury Production of Citizen Kane. Three-Week Courses $25 each Beyond Words: Advertising, Political & Social Media Messages Ilene Rubenstein, MA Mondays, 10:00 a.m.-noon October 31-November 14 CSUSB Palm Desert Campus 9 Become more aware of how language functions in contemporary culture. Today we quickly access multiple visuals and words to make sense of what we read, hear or see. Being immersed in information is not the same as comprehending its messages. Visual and verbal communication conveys information and news that allow us to make informed decisions and develop ideas and opinions. During our class discussions we will look at how author, subject and audience interact in advertising, politics and social relationships. About the Instructor For 30 years, Ilene taught literature and writing courses for teachers at CSU Northridge. In addition she was the writing programs coordinator for the CSUN Learning Resource Center. Ilene later taught web design and developed online teaching protocols. Although she officially retired in 2010, Ilene continues to work with students and faculty in the Tutoring and Academic Skills Center at College of the Desert. In her spare time she volunteers at the McCallum Theatre and for Brandeis University. Scientology: A Brief Look Arlette Poland, JD, PhD Thursdays, 10:00 a.m.-noon November 3-November 17 CSUSB Palm Desert Campus What is Scientology? In a book by that name, L. Ron Hubbard, the idiosyncratic founder of the controversial religion, explains why Scientology is the bridge that leads “from a lower to a much higher level of existence...a brighter, happier world." Learn the basics of Scientology and better understand the teachings called Dianetics, Hubbard's modern science of mental health. About the Instructor Dr. Poland is a retired lawyer turned theologian and professor. She holds a BS in political science from UC Berkeley, an MA in religion from Claremont School of Theology, a Juris Doctor from San Francisco Law School and a PhD from Claremont Graduate University. She has been teaching at the college level for fifteen years and lecturing with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute since 2005. Her areas of specialty include Buddhism, Judaism, science and religion and world religions. 10 Parking • Maps • Registration Location • Registration Parking Location Parking passes are required 24/7 at the Palm Desert Campus and can be purchased online, by mail, or at the campus. Quarterly parking passes should be purchased when registering for courses and are available to Osher members at a discounted rate of $36. Daily parking passes can be purchased from the kiosk in the campus parking lot for $6.00 on weekdays or $3.00 on Saturdays.
