>FOCUS< TORONTO WADO-KAI KARATE CLUB LTD. TORONTO WADO-KAI WEB SITE: WWW.TORONTOWADOKAI.COM COMMUNICATIONS: [email protected] DECEMBER 2008 INTRODUCTION As we enter the winter season I thought it best to lead off with advertising the 2010 Bahamas Retreat to warm us up. Read on for news about our Bahamas trip coordinators. It would really be appreciated if everyone who might be even remotely interested in the trip to contact the coordinators so that we have an idea of the level of interest. No commitment is required at this time; and given that we’re talking a year away this gives excellent time and incentive for the family to work together to save for the trip. On behalf of the Toronto Wado-Kai Karate Club Ltd I would like to extend our Best Wishes for the Season and the New Year. > EDITOR ROBB DODS 1 MEET YOUR 2010 BAHAMAS RETREAT COORINATORS The Toronto Wado-Kai Karate Club wants to invite you to experience Grand Bahama...with a KIAI ! The partnership and combined efforts of Bahamas Wado-Kai with Toronto Wado-Kai will create a memorable experience for everyone. In “the south”, Sensei Freeman Thurston Godan will be graciously hosting, with his team of Sensei Annamae Thurston Sandan, Bradley Knowles Sandan, and Haywood Romer Yodan; Sempai Monique and Nichole Shepherd; and a host of BWKK parents, guardians and well-wishers from their YMCA, and Community Centrebased Youth and Young Adults karate programs as necessary to ensure a successful Bahamas Karate Conclave, and memorable Bahamas visit for the Canadian visitors... we will all make a great team! Immediately following the October FOCUS call for a coordinator(s) to manage the Bahamas trip, Shodan-Ho’s Lenore Eng & Veronica Cizmar enthusiastically came forward to volunteer. To get the party started, we would like to introduce ourselves as **L&V Your Bahama Mamas**. You may know us as Lenore Eng & Veronica Cizmar from the West End and Etobicoke Wado-Kai clubs. The Toronto Director “in charge” will be Robb Dods to support the event [says Robb, “Admittedly the “real work” will be by Lenore and Veronica; I’m just there to, well, be there for support…you know, it’s what Directors do, right; get others to do the work and support them?] (Ah, maybe that’s at work you’re thinking about, Robb). We will be organizing the event from “the north”. The aim is a seven day / six night event during February of 2010. The excursion promises the inspiring beaches of Grand Bahama and the warm hospitality of our hosts, led by Sensei Freeman Thurston. Since this trip is open to all karateka and their families, we are planning to offer many activities from martial art seminars and special karate events, to more 'vacation activities' like a sunset cruise, snorkeling, kayaking, biking and horse back riding. The search has just begun for the best price, putting together packages and options. As you can appreciate, a lot depends on the number of people attending. Our VERY preliminary results have indicated the cost to be approximately $1,200/person. (Start now and it’s only about $3 per day to save). If you have any interest in joining the event (we’re not asking for a commitment yet) we urge you and the members of your dojos to contact us directly at [email protected]. We would like to get an idea of just how many karateka and their families would be even interested, so we may present a more comprehensive package and a more accurate price. > L&V YOUR BAHAMA MAMAS (AND ROBB & FREEMAN) 2 NEWS FROM CLUBS CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LATEST BLACK BELT RANKS: To Shodan-Ho: Veronica Cizmar, Etobicoke (missed reporting in August) Tiago Magalhaes, Ryerson Patricia Cadeau, Thornhill Steven Schlichtmann, Brooklin-Whitby Astrid Morse, Brooklin-Whitby To Shodan: Joseph Tanel, Thornhill Stanley Li, Manulife To Nidan: Waldon Zabizewski, Clarington To Sandan: Vanessa Connors, Clarington To Yodan: Anthony Woodward, Brooklin-Whitby EDMONTON Karate Clubs, Edmonton AB: Glenora and North Pointe Community Church clubs in Edmonton are entering a “season of testing”. THURSTON, GODAN, Founder/Chief Instructor, Bahamas/Caribbean Aikiwa Wado Kai Karate Doh / Kubudo BROOKLIN-WHITBY Karate Clubs, Brooklin/Whitby ON: Congratulations Victoria!!! Victoria Steele is a member of Brooklin Karate's Children's Class. She began training just a little over a year ago in the "Family Class" and transferred to the Children's class when it started in January 2008. On October 9, Victoria tested for her Yellow Belt and was successful! Shown presenting her certificate to her are Sensei Sam (Victoria's proud father and the Children's Class instructor) and Sensei Ron. 4 Milestone For Sensei Ron!!! Everyone was working hard driving their front kicks forward through target paddles when Sensei Ron called break time. Before the room cleared, Sensei Heather Cant could be heard asking for everyone's attention! Ron thought that someone must have hurt themselves and quickly looked to where Heather was calling from. What Ron saw was Sensei Anthony Woodward walking into the dojo with a birthday cake (surprise!!!!) for Ron. On top of the cake were two well lit candles. One was a 6 the other was as 0. Yup, the big 60!!! After the initial shock to Ron, he had enough composure to make an impromptu speech. There were several messages in his speech. The first one was that that "60" is only a number, you are as young as (or as old as) you think you are! The second was that had it not been for all of the physical challenges and workouts completed over the past 28 years in karate, he most likely wouldn't be feeling as young as he does. The third and last message has to do with the friends he's made through karate and all of the students, young and old, that he has taught and continues to teach... they all keep him thinking young! The surprise celebration and cake were very much enjoyed by all! Students Successful At Their Testing!!! Five students tested for their next belt level on October 16. All were well prepared and all successfully passed. Congratulations!!! Shown in the following picture (in the front row) are the students who graded. From L-R: Areej (promoted to Orange), Matthew (promoted to Brown), Chloe, Abeer, and Michael (all promoted to Orange). Behind them are Sensei Anthony, Eric, Astrid, Sensei Ron, Steve, Sensei Heather and Sensei Sam. With the exception of Sensei Ron, all of those in the back row participated as judges for the grading. 5 Thornhill Tournament Results - Congratulations!!! On Saturday, October 18, 2008, a small contingent of students from Brooklin-Whitby Karate traveled to Thornhill (Toronto) to participate in the Fall Tournament. The results are as follows: • • • • Chloe Schlichtmann: 1st place in kata -and- 2nd place in sparring in her Division Brady McNicol: 1st place in sparring in his Division Cody Strickland: 1st place in sparring in his Division Wade Wiseman: gained some experience (as did all of them) in his Division Pictured below are (back row from L to R): Sensei Annemarie, Cody, Sensei Heather, Wade, Sensei Anthony Front Row - Chloe & Brady 6 Another Successful Grading!!! On October 27, twelve students tested for their next belt level; 11 white belts and one yellow belt showed up with anticipation and nervousness. When the testing was complete there were 11 new yellow belts and one new orange belt. Each and every student did an awesome job in earning their new belt! Congratulations to all!!! Shown below from L-R: Sensei Heather, Dimitri, Thomas (in front), Christine, Megan, Sensei Anthony, Michelle, Sensei Heather, Rochelle (in front), Marie, Jerod, Sensei Annemarie, Cecilia, Ryan, Eric (promoted to Orange), Matthew, and Sensei Sam. Congratulations To Steve & Astrid!!! On November 5, Steve and Astrid journeyed to the Unionville Dojo to be tested for their Shodan-Ho ranks. After all of their hard work training for this occasion and turning in solid performances at the grading, both were successfully promoted!!! Shown below from L-R: Sensei Dave Manara, Steve, Eric (traveled to the grading to support Steve & Astrid), Astrid, Sensei Ron, and Sensei Heather (who also traveled to the grading to show support). Congratulations again Astrid and Steve! Your promotions are well deserved!!! 7 Anthony Woodward Awarded His 4th Dan!!! On November 12th at the Yudansha class held in Unionville, Anthony was presented his 4th dan by Sensei Manara. It's a well deserved promotion recognizing Anthony for his continuous dedication to both his own training and improvement and to that of numerous others from white belt up to and including lower ranked black belts. Anthony has also been part of the fabric of the Brooklin-Whitby dojo for many years and has made significant contributions to its success. Congratulations Anthony!!! The Freeport News. It somehow seems to have struck a universal chord as current global economic conditions slide into unqualified recessions. Perhaps our readership will appreciate the connections between the emotional anxieties of a Dan ranking session (for which they may not be fully prepared)... and a notice of foreclosure on a mortgaged property (that they were not anticipating). 15 According to the experts, stress may start in our minds, but it takes an undeniable toll on our bodies, from stiff muscles and stomachaches to increased risk of a range of diseases. Over the years, however, experts' opinions on the best way to beat stress have been split. Some scientists have urged us to work it off with the most vigorous exercise possible; others, to learn relaxation techniques. Somehow, the most intriguing, and best solution of all may be a cross between the two. That is, working the body while “turning off” the mind to the sources of the stress. One thing the experts do not argue about is that stress effects are system-wide. The “stress signals” starts at the front of the brain, which signals the nervous system’s command centre, the hypothalamus, to trigger the adrenal glands to release natural body stimulants - chemical messengers called cholamines. These push the heart to beat faster, breathing to quicken, blood pressure and hormone levels to rise. One of the most immediate results: a great increase in the blood flow to the muscles of the arms and legs, literally priming them to respond. These revved-up reactions make up the well known “fight or flight response” – the body’s all-out alert to get ready to punch or run. The only problem is that in most cases of modern stress, we are not in any type of physical danger – what is menacing, rather, is an emotional or mental challenge.
