NEIBA’s 43rd Fall Conference and Trade Show!
Once again it is time to spend three days together in
Providence Rhode Island, learning new things, discovering
new books, meeting new authors, making new friends and
seeing old ones.
As we have come to expect the NEIBA Fall Conference is
strong on education: Tuesday’s offerings include a panel
of reps and publishers discussing ways in which we can
sell more in the growth category of non-fiction. We have a
workshop focusing on maintaining and training for customer service; a panel of our reps sharing the best of what
they see in our stores, and a session devoted to working
with self-published authors. NECBA will begin its session
with their Annual Meeting, followed by their picks for the
holidays. ABA will be with us to present the results of 2015
ABACUS survey. Thursday’s education will bring us
NECBA’s intriguingly titled “Growing a Children’s Bookseller”, and we have a thorough presentation of the new
Edelweiss +. Thursday is also our Annual Meeting. We’re
also trying something new this year with an Open Forum
for everyone – reps, booksellers of all levels, and publishers
to gather in one place to talk about whatever anyone
what to discuss.
President’s Award is Elizabeth Strout. We’ll shout and cheer
for Anne DeCourcey, who is receiving the Saul Gilman
Award, and the Norwich Book Store, the 2016 winner of the
Independent Spirit Award. We will take a few moments
to honor retiring Macmillan Rep, Bob Werner. And all this
will be hosted by best-selling author and humorist, David
Pogue.
It’s my belief that regional shows and conferences are
more important than they’ve been in years. Winter Institute
is not always possible for many of you. BEA is challenged
by having to be many things to many constituents, and
fewer of you are attending. But NEIBA is your show, in your
region, where you’ll see your reps and your favorite authors, and, of course, each other.
We look forward to seeing all of you very soon!
Steve Fischer
From the NEIBA President
Dear Fellow New England Booksellers –
As usual we’ll have acres of new books to discover.
Exhibit Day begins when the Ballroom doors open promptly at 10am on Wednesday morning and will stay open,
with no competing activities, until 4:30. We have sold out
the exhibit hall so there will be no shortage of new books,
stationery, calendars, journals and merchandise to explore. Remember to take advantage of the show offers
many of our exhibitors are offering!
I hope you are all enjoying these final days of summer.
Ideally you have seen robust sales in your stores AND
made a big dent in the piles of books beside your beds,
on your desks and against your walls. You will need that
extra space in just a few weeks because our 43rd NEIBA
Fall Conference is taking place a little earlier than usual
this year. We will be gathering in Providence, RI on
September 20-22.
This year we will play host to over 50 authors. We are
thrilled to open the conference on Tuesday with our
keynote speaker, Zadie Smith, talking about her new
novel, Swing Time with Grub Street’s Chris Castellani. That
evening’s Author Reception brings 23 authors, each signing their new works, and eager to meet us all. Wednesday’s Children’s Author Breakfast features Andrea Beaty,
Grace Lin and Raina Telgemeirer. For Thursday’s Author
Breakfast we welcome Min Jin Lee, Francine Prose, Mark
Slouka and Sabaa Tahir. Thursday’s Luncheon speaker is
best-selling author, founder of Authors United, and New
Englander, Douglas Preston.
Steve and Nan have been hard at work putting together what is shaping up to be an extraordinary show. As
our Keynote Speaker, Zadie Smith will kick off three days
packed with stimulating educational panels, inspiring
author presentations and informative publisher showcases. The NEIBA Board and Advisory Council, along
with NECBA, have created a program with offerings for
everyone in your store. Please consider bringing some
frontline booksellers to take advantage of this opportunity to experience the vibrancy of our New England indie
community. Our regional show is one of the largest in
the nation and always brims with bookseller energy and
enthusiasm.
The New England Book Awards banquet will be held on
Wednesday evening in the glamorous Grand Ballroom of
the Biltmore Hotel. Recipients this year are Noah Hawley
for Before the Fall; Sy Montgomery for Soul of an Octopus,
and Lauren Wolk for Wolf Hallow. The recipient of the

NECBA
NECBA Picks:
The Windows & Mirrors Project and Hot Children’s Books
to Know about this Holiday Season
NECBA proudly presents a selection of our favorite books
from 2016. NECBA members will highlight titles from board
books to Young Adult books. The Windows & Mirrors team will
unveil and present six books representing the best in
children’s books and diversity that the committee is very
excited to showcase. The committee will also distribute the
long list of titles recommended by NECBA and BPRNE. This
session is particularly recommended for general NEIBA bookstore and booksellers who would like to learn about hot children’s titles to know and stock this holiday season including
NEIBA Holiday Catalog titles. Handouts provided. The session
will begin with the NECBA Annual Meeting. Moderated by
NECBA Chairs, Sara Hines, Eight Cousins, Falmouth MA and
Robin Sung, Porter Square Books. Cambridge, MA
Within the independent bookselling community the category of non-fiction sometimes generates less buzz than
debut literary fiction, but a look at our bestsellers and
widely reviewed books indicates that sales of general
non-fiction represent a large portion of our business, and
growing. This session will focus on buying, selling and marketing of general non-fiction including history, biography,
cooking, mind/body/spirit and university press titles. We’ll
look at trends, market share, servicing your local market
and how to represent a stronger selection of non-fiction
in your store. Panelists are: David LePere (Princeton, Yale
and MIT Press rep); Steven Pace (Workman Publishing);
Dale Szczeblowski (Porter Square Books, Cambridge, MA);
Debra Woodward (Red Wheel Weiser). Moderated by
Vicky Titcomb (Titcomb’s Bookshop, East Sandwich, MA).
2:30 pm – 3:45 pm
Customer Service
Customer service is the backbone of every retail endeavor. It is our first impression when we walk into a store, or
restaurant, and if the service is great, what we talk about
when we talk about our experience. Customer service
can never been emphasized enough and, along with a
great selection of books, should be the hallmark of every
independent bookstore in New England. This session will
be led by our fellow evangelists for superior customer
service and will include ideas for staff training and maintaining high standards. With Nancy Scheemaker (Northshire Bookstore, Saratoga, NY); Matt Shaw (Oblong Books,
Rhinebeck, NY); Liza Bernard (Norwich Bookstore, Norwich,
VT) and Annie Philbrick (Bank Square Books.
Mystic, CT and Savoy Books. Westerley, RI)
4:00 pm – 5:15 pm
ABA Presents: Understanding and Acting on Your
ABACUS-15 Report
The ABACUS Survey is unique: There is no comparable
data source or analytic tool for independent bookstores.
This session will review ABACUS-15’s top-line data to
demonstrate how booksellers can use their own numbers
to improve their business’ performance. Understanding
the framework of the independent bookstore market is
important for all—from frontline booksellers to owners and
managers. Presented by ABA CEO, Oren Teicher.

What Reps See!
Our publisher sales representatives are in more bookstores
in three months than many of will get to visit in a year. They
know the buyers and the event coordinators, the frontline
booksellers and the receivers. They watch customer interaction, store operations, and get to see the multitude of ways
our shops merchandise, select, and sell books and gift items.
This panel of sales reps will give us a tour of the best practices they see all over New England so that you can bring
back to your own store many new ideas. Suzette Ciancio,
(W.W. Norton); John Muse (Simon & Schuster); Nikki Mutch
(Scholastic); Stacie Williams (Ingram). Moderated by
Maureen Karb, (Como Sales).
4:00 pm – 5:15 pm
Working with Self Published Authors
Yes, you can learn to love your local, self-published authors!
This panel will give you the tools to work more closely and
productively with the self-published authors who want you
to carry their books. We’ll look at different consignment
programs, ways to merchandise and promote their books,
how to educate authors on what their roles are in marketing
their books. Proper management of expectations can result
in a happy collaboration between authors and your store.
In addition, we’ll have someone from Ingram Spark who will
introduce us to their program for self-published books.
Liz Bartek (R.J. Julia Booksellers, Madison, CT); Josh Floyd
(Ingram). Moderated by Sandy Scott (Galaxy Bookshop,
Harwick, VT).

Open Forum for All
Whether it’s the NEIBA Fall Conference, BEA or Winter Institute, we often hear that there is never enough time to “just
schmooze” with booksellers and publishers about books and
business. This year we have set aside an hour for anyone
and everyone who wants to have time to do just that. A
few tables will be set aside for specific topics, while others
will be for talking about books and gift items you’re exited
about this fall; new ideas you picked up over the past two
days of education; conversation about procedures at other
stores, and an opportunity for booksellers and publishers to
talk. Everyone is welcome!

Growing a Children’s Bookseller: Demystifying
stages of reading from birth to Young Adult

the developmental stages of the children’s section. The

middle grade (ages 8-12), and teens (12+). Designed to
help all booksellers understand key components of each
stage in order to increase customer engagement and
offer informative recommendations to customer queries in
the children’s section. The panel will include Eileen
Lawrence (Director of Marketing, Algonguin Young Readers); Katie McGarry (Sales Rep, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt);
Lucille Rettino (V.P. Director of Marketing, Children’s Publishing Group, Simon & Schuster). Moderated by

Jane Yolen / Ellen Shi, Little Frog & the Scary Autumn Thing, Persnickety Press Table F2: 6
A heart-warming story about change and discovery for Little Frog as she experiences her first autumn...not the green world
she knows and loves so much, but something scarier and ominous, filled with red and gold and yellow. “Rich colors underscore the intensity of Little Frog’s feelings, as the sunlit greens of reeds and lily pads give way to showers of leaves that, in the

On her first day at her new school, Anne is saddled with the nickname Anne of Green Bagels, thanks to the health-food
sandwich her grandmother has made her for lunch. Can things get any worse? Then she meets Otto, who shares her
interest in music and in her favorite TV show, The Blimptons. When Anne sees the drawings in a childhood notebook of her
father’s, she wonders -- could it be the was the real inventor of the Blimptons? And can she somehow get him to come
home and claim the credit he deserves?
Corinne Demas & Artemis Roehrig, Does Fiddler Crab Fiddle?, Persnickety Press Table F2: 56
First in a series of non-fiction children’s picture book that combines science with humor in all the right ways to learn about
creatures. Starting with silly questions like the title, and moving on through increasingly-unlikely questions such as “do fiddler
crabs ride a skateboard?” (they don’t need a skateboard – they can move sideways so shore birds can’t catch them). Children will discover amazing things about Fiddler Crabs, while laughing out loud as they do. “The humor is irresistible.” -- Kirkus
