Community Shares of Wisconsin 2007 Annual Report

Dear Friends,
The year 2007 was a fantastic year for Community Shares of Wisconsin, and on behalf of all CSW member agencies, I thank you. We
received $990,770 in 2007 to assist our member groups working for
social, environmental, and economic justice. This is an increase of 11%
compared to 2006.
I want to extend a special thank-you to donors who give directly to
CSW, in addition to making donations designated for specific member
organizations. Gifts to CSW ensure that our federation remains strong
and proactive, that we serve our members with innovative programs, and
that our members continue to have growing access to workplace giving
campaigns.
Equally important, I want to thank community volunteers for their
steadfast support of CSW and its member organizations. In 2007, we
recognized a fantastic group of Backyard Heroes along with the two
winners of our Sally Sunde and Liesl Blockstein Award for Social Justice,
Diane Wensel and Carol Lobes. Carol and Diane, who volunteer for the
Fair Housing Center of Greater Madison and Fair Wisconsin Education
Fund, respectively, provide us with a vision of justice from which we can
all draw strength and resolve. Diane and Carol remind us that, together,
we can accomplish amazing feats.
Two community activists, Charlie Daniel and Rodney Yasushi
Horikawa, left the CSW Board of Directors this year. The CSW family
acknowledges their gifts of time and talent, and wishes them well as they
move on to other endeavors.
Finally, on a personal note, 2007 was my final full year as President
of the CSW Board. During my two terms as President, I found it an
honor and a pleasure to meet many CSW donors and volunteers, and
to work with CSW’s fantastic staff. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for
your commitment to making our world a more just and humane place.
And please welcome Joan Karan as CSW’s next Board President.

2007 Member Highlights
Protecting Our Environment
1000 Friends of Wisconsin helped over 75
communities in the state with difficult development issues, such as dealing with proposed
plans for “big-box” retail stores.
Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin registered
over 3,000 bicyclists for Bike to Work Week.
In addition, over 4,500 school children
learned about safe bicycling through the Safe
Routes to School Program.
Citizens for Safe Water Around Badger so
effectively mobilized the public that the military agreed to dismantle (rather than openburn) hundreds of contaminated buildings
at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant, thus
preventing the uncontrolled release of dioxins,
lead, asbestos, and other toxins into the environment. Perhaps most important, this sets a
national precedent for innovative treatment
of contaminated military buildings. Proposed
burnings have been cancelled in Wisconsin,
Ohio, and Indiana, and many more proposed
burnings have been suspended.
Clean Wisconsin was integral in Governor
Doyle’s Global Warming Task Force, with
several staff members holding positions on
the Task Force. In addition, the group was a
leader in bringing together stakeholders to
work toward legislation to protect the Great
Lakes.
Gathering Waters Conservancy advocated
for re-authorization of the Knowles-Nelson
Stewardship Fund. Since its inception, this
Fund has helped save more than 475,000 acres
of our most pristine lands and waters.
River Alliance of Wisconsin advocated for
state funding (over $12 million was secured)
to help farmers reduce pollution from agriculture. In addition, the group organized hikes,
paddles, and other excursions to offer nearly
300 people experiences on a Wisconsin river.
Wisconsin Wetlands Association responded
to requests for assistance from more than 50
grassroots advocates working on local land
protection issues. The Association also worked
for fair tax policies for landowners who
restore and maintain wetlands in agricultural
landscapes.
Ensuring Affordable, Accessible Housing
Common Wealth Development helped 144
youth improve their money management
skills. In addition, its Home Buyer Education
Program provided education counseling to
low-income first-time home buyers—part of
an effort to increase African-American home
ownership by 20% in Madison.
Madison Area Community Land Trust’s Troy
Gardens has been nationally recognized as a
model of sustainable land use development.
Troy Gardens includes mixed-income housing, community gardens used by more than
200 families, a 5-acre organic CSA farm, and
restored natural areas.
Fostering Civic Engagement
Wisconsin Apprentice Organizers Project
trained six new community organizers from
Milwaukee, Racine, and Madison. Each
worked with mentors such as parents in the
Friends of Wisconsin State Parks helps to promote and protect our state parks.
Here Whitefish Dunes State Park hosts an annual candlelight hike.
Racine School District (regarding work with
students who have disabilities) and the Gay
Straight Alliance (GSA) for Safe Schools.
Wisconsin Democracy Campaign helped
achieve a landmark ethics reform law that abolished two discredited state boards and replaced
them with a politically independent agency.

Fair Housing Center of Greater Madison provided fair housing presentations and training to
over 1,000 housing consumers and providers.
The trainings help ensure that consumers are
able to protect their housing rights and that
providers are prepared to comply with antidiscrimination laws.
against the state’s contract with Accenture
to develop a computerized voter registration
system ended: Accenture’s contract was terminated, the state was able to recoup $6 million,
and the state’s voter registration system belongs
to the people of Wisconsin.

Supporting Women, Children and Families
Rape Crisis Center launched a Spanish help
line (25-VALOR) to help increase the accessibility of RCC’s services. In addition, RCC
collaborated with 35 community organizations
to host 11 events that raised public awareness
during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence
strongly advocated in support of the Strangulation Prevention Enforcement Act, recently
passed by the state legislature. The law gives law
enforcement better guidance about, and the
ability to prosecute as a felony, this often invisible but lethal crime.
Wisconsin Early Childhood Association’s members took a stand to help shape public policy,
organized mail campaigns to legislators, and
spoke out at public hearings to secure adequate
funding for child care in the state budget.
Wisconsin Literacy hosted a summit that
focused on health literacy and improving the
delivery of health care to low-literate and limited English-speaking adults.
Empowering People with Disabilities
Disability Rights Wisconsin provided one-onone advocacy assistance, on a variety of disability rights issues, to 720 individuals and their
families throughout the state—36% of whom
had a racial/ethnic minority background.
Women in Transition worked with numerous
women with mental illness and successfully
transitioned 11 women from the halfway house
into the community.
Wisconsin Early Childhood Association works with child care
professionals to ensure high-quality care for all children.
Working for a Just, Equitable Society
ACLU of Wisconsin Foundation educated the
public about the Wisconsin ACLU’s legal cases
challenging discrimination against immigrants,
same-sex couples, religious minorities, and
low-income renters. The organization also
challenged: restrictions on student speech, the
omission of contraception coverage for county
workers, the denial of basic health care for
women in Wisconsin’s prisons, and taser abuse
by police.
Community Action on Latin America hosted
several speakers to address how U.S. foreign
policy impacts the people of Venezuela, and to
discuss slanted media coverage of Venezuela.
Wisconsin Women’s Network Women Veterans
Task Force reached out to women veterans
across the state to inform them about womenfocused and other available services, and to
encourage these women to seek the support
they deserve.
Among Bayview Foundation’s many youth programs is the Call for Peace Youth Ambassadors.

Steve Hiniker was appointed to the Governor’s
Global Warming Task Force.
Gathering Waters Conservancy was awarded
the Organization of the Year by the Mississippi
Valley Conservancy.
Citizens for Safe Water Around Badger volunteer Eunice Padley received the Division of
Forestry’s Outstanding Achievement Award for
her work in forest planning and management.
Madison Area Community Land Trust received
the 2007 Livable Communities Award from the
AARP and the National Association of Home
Builders for forward thinking in home and
community design—related to its Troy Gardens
project. In addition, its homes in the Camino
del Sol neighborhood were honored by Homes
Across America as innovative examples of housing that combines affordability, accessibility,
and green building efforts.
Common Wealth Development received the
2007 Governor’s Award for Financial Literacy.
Disability Rights Wisconsin received the Voices
of Courage Community Service Award from
the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Managing Attorney Monica Murphy
received the Equal Justice Fund Distinguished
Service Award.
Wisconsin Women’s Network was chosen to
represent one of just five states in a nationwide
pilot program­—the Elder Economic Security
Initiative—which seeks to strengthen economic
security for older adults through coalitionbuilding, research, education, and advocacy.
Gathering Waters Conservancy leads one of its planning
workshops, this one focused on site conservation.

Funding Sources
Gifts to Community Shares serve two critical
functions:
Community Shares of Wisconsin received 2007 revenue from: campaign giving in
public and private workplaces; individual donations; online giving; corporate gifts;
Community CHIP; and other gifts directed through Community Shares.
• They help support the services we provide.
• They benefit all of our nonprofits—with a portion of the gift divided equally among our 56
member groups.
Gifts can also be donor directed, meaning that
you as donors can direct donations to one or more
specific member groups. In such cases, our member
nonprofits receive 100% of your contributions.
