About Raul!
“Working hard is how my grandparents brought me up.”
Raul Cantu
It was Raul Cantu’s grandmother who
inspired the name Nacho Mama’s.
Without ever looking at a recipe,
Raul learned to cook his
delicious Tex-Mex style dishes
by simply watching his
grandmother cook traditional
San Antonio cuisine, which is
where he grew up.
Before Nacho Mama’s,
affordable Mexican food was
something alien to Richmond.
Raul saw the opportunity for a fun and enthusiastic Tex-Mex brand that
would soon become a Carytown staple. But before he could realize
this vision, Raul left a promising career in San Diego with nothing but
a suitcase and a one-way plane ticket to Richmond. He was drawn to
RVA because he fell in love with the “lush green small-town feel called
home by really friendly people.”

But the transition wasn’t easy at first. For the first 6 months, he worked
at the Jefferson hotel from 5 AM to 2 PM, and then bartended at Patrick
Henry’s from 4 PM to midnight-- almost everyday.
But, determined as ever, his spare time was spent conversing with
Carytown businesses on Cary Street about his Tex-Mex restaurant
vision.
The result: a restaurant with delicious food, amazing drinks and great
times for all who enter the doors!
