Year 13 meanwhile have almost completed Virgil’s epic Aeneid and have been studying Ancient Greek comedy via Aristophanes plays Lysistrata and Frogs. On the freezing cold morning of Friday 5th December 10 excited students (and a very excited Ms Roberts and Mrs Cooper) travelled down to Birmingham to see what the fashion industry has on offer. Operation Bright and Beautiful At the beginning of this term the School Council wanted to make our school community more aware of environmental issues, such as tackling concerns about litter and improving our surroundings. At a Student Council meeting just before October half term, eleven volunteers took it upon themselves to take this on – Thornleigh Salesian College’s Eco Group was born! The students felt that our school site would benefit from a splash of colour! Having discussed what they wanted to do, a plan emerged. They toured the site to identify areas where they could plant spring flowering bulbs and other areas where they would plant winter flowering perennials. With a colour scheme and a plan in hand they spent one very wet lunchtime choosing heathers, ornamental cabbages, primroses and winter-flowering pansies from a local garden centre. The Eco Group came into school on Saturday 15 November. They met to tidy and prepare the garden areas (careful not to harm the worms) and The Eco Group held a market stall at this year’s festive production ‘12 Days of Christmas’. The Eco Group sold bee eco-friendly wild flower seeds, seasonal bird feed cakes, cookies, honey scented soaps Mellors then planted different types of daffodils and tulip bulbs ready for Spring.
