Prairie Pedaler December 2013 2205 Victoria Ave, Regina, SK S4P 0S4 www.saskcycling.ca [email protected] 306 780 9299 Interim President’s Message, Ron Cooley It’s been a couple months now since I stepped in to replace Barret Kropf as SCA President. As many of you will know, Barret has taken on the head coach’s position for the Trinity Western University Men’s Hockey team in Langley BC. Barret’s dynamism over the last few years has been a tremendous asset to Saskatchewan Cycling and we wish him, along with Bridget and sons Jalen, Josh and Jacob, every happiness and success. It’s been a long time since some of our provincial champions donned their champion’s jerseys (awarded for the first time this year). So I thought an end-of-the-year message would be a good time to congratulate them all once again. Dalton Fayad was a powerhouse on the road this year, winning the men’s road race, 40 K ITT and 15 K ITT; Cuylar Conly raced to victory in the men’s provincial criterium. On the Women’s side, Lindsay Aspen claimed the jerseys in the women’s road race, 15 K ITT and criterium, while Emanuella Bandol claimed the 40 K jersey. On the mountain bike, Corey Zetterstrom claimed his seventh provincial mountain bike championship, and Erica Musyj her sixth! Brad Kerr and Susan Clark capped the season with well-earned victories in the men’s and women’s cyclocross provincials. Clubs are already working hard to plan a great season of racing for 2014. It takes tremendous effort from a lot of people to host races. We have a great community of dedicated volunteers and it’s important that we continue to support each other’s hard work by travelling to out of town races and volunteering for events when we’re not competing. And speaking of Jerseys . . . Saskatchewan High Performance Cycling is sponsoring a contest to design the newest Team Sask Jersey—the jersey that will be worn by our provincial athletes at out-of province competitions up to and including the 2015 Western Canada Summer games. The creator of the winning design will earn a jersey in recognition of their efforts. All competitive successes in sport reflect years of training and dedication, along with some hard-to-define but very special human qualities . . . talent, character, spirit. Perhaps no one in the Saskatchewan cycling community offers a better example than Arnold Boldt, who was named to the Order of Canada this year. As a high jumper, Arnold competed in five Paralympic games between 1976 and 1992, winning seven gold medals and one silver. And in 2012 he returned to Paralympic competition as a cyclist. Congratulations Arnold! You’re an inspiration to us all. 2013 was also a Canada Games year. Saskatchewan was represented in the road events by Lindsay Aspen, Marina Aspen, Nicole Cripps, Rachel Edwards and Juliette Wheler on the women’s side, and by Colin Aspen, Lukas Conly, Kurt Hauser, Lucas Morin, and Luke Turanich on the men’s side. Along with coaching staff Frank Matus, Julia Garnet and Nathan Bundschuh. Our mountain bike team consisted of Lucas Morin, Jorn Schumann, and Ragnar Robinson in the men’s events, and Hannah Cooley in the women’s. With Leana Dyck and Jon Horn as coaching staff. Several of our athletes achieved personal bests against very tough competition. I want to thank the Board of Directors, Bob Cochrane, Ben Gotts, Cheri Moreau, and Tom Wolf, for a year of hard work. The same goes to all our club executives and volunteers who host events, organize rides and promote cycling. And special thanks are due to our permanent staff, Executive Director Denise Eberle and Provincial Coach Frank Matus. Denise puts countless hours into the funding applications, financial and office management, and communications that keep Sask Cycling running as smoothly fresh chain on a new cogset. Frank had an exciting first Continues next page . year that included opportunities to contribute to some national para-cycling team projects, and a coaching recognition award from Cycling Canada, along with the training camps and out-of-province competitions leading up to the Canada Games in August. Both are hard at work behind the scenes all winter to help ensure the 2014 season is a success. I know lots of you are already immersed in indoor training and winter commuting, or throwing yourselves into the vibrant new sport of off-road fat-tire cycling. Until we meet on the roads and trails in the spring, I wish you happy holidays and safe winter riding! The SCA and all sport associations in Saskatchewan have been mandated from Sask Sport to institute a Respect in Sport policy which adds an on-line section to the coaching certification. Respect in Sport (RiS) policy – what does it mean? In one sentence: All Saskatchewan coaches must complete the on-line Respect in Sport Course to maintain their coaching certification by December 31, 2014. What is the effect to the Cycling Cycling with this new policy? Page 23 Prairie Pedaler A direct impact on all affiliated clubs will be on Membership Assistance Program Grants that all clubs receive from the SCA. Part of the Grant is based on the number of certified coaches in the club. As of December 31, 2014, to maintain certification, a coach must complete the RiS on-line program. Failure to do so, suspends the coaches certification, which means less money to the clubs who have a large number of coaches.
