reat summer so far, eh? And speaking about “so far”,
we have had three great off-shore tournaments so
far: the first annual “Kewalo Big Fish Chase”; the
“Spinner’s Café Ahi Shootout”; and the “North Shore Hana
Pa’a”. Now, welcome aboard to the brand new first annual
“Finnaddict Challenge” , sponsored by POP Fishing &
Marine, out of the Keehi small boat harbor! We’ll have
results & pics of that one next month. In the meantime,
here’s a shot of my old Pal Bruce Matson and his
“CORMORANT” gang with their huge Pacific Blue Marlin
that tipped the scales at 848 pounds to capture 1st prize in
the Kewalo Basin event!
Ever since the “Wicked Tuna” TV reality show debuted on the National Geographic Channel, we have been
doing interviews with the captains and their crews. It seems like folks in Hawaii have been really taken with
the series. They get scads of fan mail from the islands, and we have had tons of great reaction from listeners
of my “Go Fish with Mike Buick” radio show as well. And by the way, my show is now airing in segments on
many other shows on the Mainland and even in other countries. Good fun! OK, what’s the deal? Here comes
yet another “Outer Banks” great spin-off!
“Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks”
New England’s best bluefin tuna fishermen venture south to
North Carolina’s treacherous fishing grounds, the Outer Banks,
where they will battle the local fleet for the ocean’s most lucrative
prize. A single giant bluefin can be worth more than $20,000, but
the dangerous waters, small quota and explosive rivalries make
North Carolina's Outer Banks, nicknamed “The Graveyard of the
Atlantic”, the most challenging place in the world to catch these
elusive fish. This TV offshoot of the National Geographic Channel’s
“Wicked Tuna” series features the first wahine captain, Tami White,
Monstah Bluefin In The Deep Blue
and her all-girl crew on the vessel “REEL ACTION” and we’ll introduce her to you in a future column. Our spotlight this month is shining on Capt. Charlie “Griff” Griffin. His
boat “REELS OF FORTUNE” (eat your hearts out Pat Sajak & Vanna White!) is only about 30’ long and is the
smallest in the fleet!
A self-described Army brat, Griff was born in Germany and moved to the
Outer Banks when he was 6 months old. His parents taught him to fish as
soon as he was old enough to hold a rod, and he's been a fisherman ever since,
even picking up his first job as a mate at 9 years old! He started bluefin fishing
in the mid-1980s, and built a successful sport fishing business before becoming
a full-time commercial fisherman. Griff fishes with his son Jake, and together
they are a formidable team. He strongly believes that the Southern boats have
a serious edge over the Northern competitors. He knows better than anyone
how difficult navigating the tides and channels can be, and plans to use his
Captain Griff Griffen of the
home court advantage to propel himself to the top of the leaderboard. OK

Green Sticks were introduced to Hawaii in the early 80's by the Japanese. These commercial trolling "green
sticks" are tremendously successful not only in Hawaii, but also off the east coast of the U.S., Costa Rica,
Panama, and Mexico. The generic form "green stick" (the color of the original brand of sticks introduced into
Hawaii at the time) has been applied to all heavy-duty fiberglass and carbon-fiber (graphite) sticks used in
this type of fishery. The green stick is used to elevate and tow a 20-30# wooden bird up to 400 yards behind
the vessel. The bird serves two purposes: (1) keep the main line taut (a key component to the action of the
lures); and (2) act as a teaser to attract fish to the surface. Dangling from the mainline between the boat and
bird are 4-10 drop lines with artificial squid lures that dip in and out of the water (the lures are not as effective
if simply dragged along the surface, since the danglers mimic flying fish). Hard striking tuna have been
known to launch themselves a full body length out of the water in an attempt to devour the irresistible jumping
squid lures. When hooked up, the mainline releases from the green stick by breaking the tagline, is reeled in
by hand or by electric or hydraulic reels. An inflated poly ball is used to float the bird and is positioned
behind the bird.

comes in 4 sizes, 24', 32', 40' and 46' and made for larger vessels. The new Kona Stick (CL) is a slimmer and
lighter version of the standard CS designed for smaller vessels or large vessels that have higher mounting
options. The CL has two sizes 24’ and 32'. Both models come as interlocking modular sections allowing for
various mounting and upgrading options. The Green Stick Bird is a key component of the Green Stick System.
These Birds are designed to look like small tuna fish as it crashes and thrashes the surface. The birds’ weight
and balance and center of gravity have been specifically researched, designed and placed for this bird to
achieve its two main objectives. First, it keeps steady pressure on the main line so you can deploy your dangle
baits. Secondly, it is specifically designed to mimic small tuna crashing bait at or near the surface. This kind of
action turns other tunas hot as they take chase to ensure they do not miss a meal.

ranspac is over and the results are in. At this writing, provisional results from Transpac have local
yachtsman, James McDowell, racing his Santa Cruz 70, “GRAND ILLUSION”, finishing the race first
in his division and first in ORR, followed by “PYEWACKET”, “BOLT” and “OEX”, meaning Team GI
wins the King Kalakaua Cup. The first monohull to finish was “CELERITY” who corrected out to first in
their division and seventh in ORR. The Maxis, “WILD OATS III” won the Merlin Trophy and RIO 100 won
the Barndoor Trophy. The Transpac website will have all the current results.
Trimaran “LENDING CLUB 2” finished the 2200+ mile journey in three days eighteen hours (unofficially).
According to Transpac, Lending Club withdrew from the race and started earlier in order to attempt a
world record for the Transpac course.
Since my last article several events were held. Kaneohe Yacht Club finished their three weeks of racing
the Summer Circuit at the end of June. Like last year, “BACK BREAKER” had an outstanding 9 race
regatta finishing in first place. Twenty-two boats completed, the top five finishers are:

Kaneohe also held the Kalakaua Cup Regatta on July 4th. Weather permitting three races were raced and the boat with the
best corrected time for all three races was the winner of the race. This year, winds were 6-9 knots and 10 boats competed for
this prestigious Cup. “BOOMERANG” raced a near perfect series with two firsts and one second. The top five finishers are listed

2015 Long Beach Race Week, a seven race regatta held over three
days. Scott Bradley, skipper/owner of “CAZAN”, who was in town to race back in Transpac and John Spadaro, skipper/owner
of “BOOMERANG”, who was in town to race his new “BOOMERANG” before it is sailed back to Hawaii placed second and
fourth, respectively, in the PHRF-1 class.
Coming up for the end of summer, Nawiliwili Yacht Club holds their annual Kauai Channel Race from Kaneohe to Nawiliwili
Harbor on August 7th. At press time twelve boats are registered to race. Waikiki Yacht Club holds the Duke Kahanamoku Big
Three Beach Fleet on August 15th.
The finale of the summer is the 2015 Lahaina to Honolulu Race held by Hawaii Yacht Club. This race is the largest locally
run race in the islands with approximately 35 boats from Oahu and Maui racing from Honolua Bay to the Ala Wai, where
Hawaii Yacht Club plays hosts to the participants.
Preceding the ‘Return’, the boats will be competing in Lahaina Yacht Club’s third race of their Summer Series, also known
as Lahaina Lights. After the race the LYC treats the racers to a delicious pupu party. The following day, Maui will challenge
Oahu for the coveted Softball Trophy won last year by Oahu with dinghy racing afterwards.

We were expecting 5 boats on the line but ended up with 6. Bohica was a no show because of Keel Bolt issues (better safe
than upside down). The first race started at 12 noon with typical Lahaina midday light winds. All the competitors made there
way slowly up course with NOA leading the way. Noa was first to finish on all three races. As the day progressed the wind
freshened a little making the third race very quick. If you look at the corrected times NOA and LONO were very close an all
three races. After the races most of the competitors retired to LYC for PUPU's and Libations. A good time was had by all
including the Race Committee. Once again we would like to thank Mike Neagle for the use of his boat, Kahaloa, for committee.

“LADY DEE” is a 46’ Bertram that was repowered with 700 hp Mann
Motors 5 years ago. The motors have 3,300 hours on them and the
boat will do 24 knots. Burns 7 gallons an hour while trolling with
the generator on. “LADY DEE” is equipped with a generator, air
conditioning, full galley, master stateroom, two heads with showers.
In 2014, a new auto pilot, GPS, VHF radio and stereo was installed.
