The Dental Program in action.
February is dental health month
so our volunteers were out in force
visiting 15 schools in Huntington Beach
and Westminster taking time with
kindergarten and first grade students to
remind them to take good care of their
teeth. Who knew dental hygiene could be
such a fun topic? Our volunteers read a
cute story about taking care of your teeth
and show the students how to properly
brush your teeth using giant plastic teeth
and an oversized toothbrush. 1,600 smile
kits (each kit includes a toothbrush,
toothpaste, and stickers) were given out
to the students. The students are always
excited to listen and learn. The smile kits
are also popular. Students at Edison High
School help put the smile kits together for
us each year.
Save the Date: Please mark your
calendars for our annual fundraiser,
Treasures by the Sea. The fundraiser will
be held at the Hyatt Hotel in Huntington
Beach on Saturday, April 30, 2011. This is
a silent auction/luncheon/entertainment/
live auction event.

The money we raise at our annual
fundraiser and our sales from our Thrift
Shop and Boutique help many programs
in our community that support children
and adults in need.
Each year we give back about
$350,000 to our community. The more
we earn, the more we can help meet the
growing needs of the community. We are
all volunteers with no paid employees and
we have over 180 active members in our
chapter as well as over 43 members in our
DreamCatcher’s auxiliary. We have over
60 members in our high school Assisteen’s
auxiliary.

Perpetual Trophy Winners: Caroline Williams and Bill Williams with

The Wanderlust Ski Club’s February
trip to Snowmass/Aspen, Colorado was a
great success. There were 42 participants
including club members and guests. 33
Of us left LAX on Saturday 2/5/11 bound
for Aspen airport. When we approached
the aspen airport there was dense cloud
cover so the plane made another pass
at landing. The clouds cleared just long
enough for our plane to land-- probably
the only landing that day at aspen airport.
When we landed in almost impossible
conditions everyone knew this was going
to be a special trip.

The lodging was a ski-in ski-out
bed & breakfast chalet at Snowmass
mountain chalet, located in the heart
of Snowmass village right on the slopes.

Long time Huntington Harbor resident
and club member Charlene Chalabian
and her daughter Jackie arrived Tuesday
evening and brought southern California
Sunshine for Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday and Saturday. The skiing was
fantastic.
Wednesday was “Nastar” race day
with 23 participants earning 11 medals.

Caroline Williams was race chairperson
and did a great job with the arrangements
at Aspen highlands race course. In addition to Nastar medals, our club awards
men’s and women’s individual medals
for gold, silver and bronze in three categories of expertise. Taking home gold
medals were Caroline Williams and Dan
Niedringhaus in the “a” category, Loretta
Davis and Leigh Ross in “b” and June
Lange and Bill Ruzgis in “c”. Silvers were
won by Sharon Niedringhaus and Bill
Williams in “a”, and Joetta Wallace and
George Graham in “b” and Paul Lange
in “c”. Bronze medals were proudly worn
by Jim Sanders in “a”, Brenda Zubieta
and Bob Franz in “b” and Bob Berman
in “c”. Our special award for the club is
the coveted perpetual trophy--one each
for men and women. This year’s recipients
were Bobbitt’s Bill Williams and Morio’s
Caroline Williams!
Evenings were spent in and among
the many restaurants of snowmass village
and the town of Aspen and of course
some time was also spent shopping the
fine stores in the area. Friday, the last ski
day of the trip, was topped off with a dinner at one of the silver tree hotel banquet
rooms most beautifully decorated by
the wonderful Carla Davis with the 17
pounds of decorations she so sensibly sent
ahead to the hotel! The “Nastar” medals
were presented and it was a perfect ending to a great week.
We left Aspen Saturday morning
with some regrets because the sun was
still in full bloom. However, fun was
enjoyed by all and everyone was looking
forward to their next skiing adventure.
The Wanderlust skiers are as good as
their name, wandering the snow covered
resorts lusting for downhill adventure.

Cantilever Decks Update
Wesley Chesbro, Assemblyman
from Eureka, chairs the committee
which oversees the California State
Lands Commission. Jim Silva along with
Senator Tom Harman have taken an
interest in looking into the new fees the
Lands Commission is trying to impose
on Harbour residents who have cantilever decks which extend up to five feet
over the water they lease for their docks.
Consequently Jim Silva, the Assemblyman
representing Huntington Beach, arranged
for Wes Chesbro to tour Huntington
Harbour. Jim Silva graciously invited Wes
Chesbro to his house for the weekend and
arranged with the Sheriff’s department to
have one of their boats give us the tour.
Coming along on the tour were homeowners Frank Singer, Bill Wilson, Craig
Kronick and Daryl Phillip. Daryl is on the
Huntington Harbour Property Owners
Association Board of Directors.
As
background,
the
Lands
Commission prepares ten year leases for
anyone on the main and mid channels
who want to have a dock which can extend
up to 60’ from the seawall. As long as the
dock is not used for commercial purposes
the lease is free, however there is a charge
for preparing the lease. Every ten years
homeowners send the Lands Commission
a fee to prepare their lease with any unused
funds to be returned to the homeowner.
The cost to prepare the lease has ranged
from a few hundred dollars to over $1,500
recently.
We boarded the Sheriff’s boat around
9:00 am Saturday morning on February
5 to start an informative one hour tour
of Huntington Harbour’s main and mid
channels. During the cruise all of us
learned something. For example Chesbro
learned that the Lands Commission had
the authority to charge homeowners with
cantilever decks for over fifty years but
only decided to do so about two years
ago. Furthermore, not all waterfront
main and mid channel homeowners pay
the same for the cost of preparing dock
leases with 10% to 20% not being charged
at all. Side channel property owners pay
nothing. It also seems that if a homeowner
has a cantilever deck but no dock, they
are not being charged for anything. Some

of the homeowners receive some of their
money back and others receive nothing. What is troubling is that while the
dock lease costs about $100 per year, the
Lands Commission wants to charge about
$1,000 per year for the “air” occupied
by a cantilever deck. It should be noted
that most all homeowners have permits
for their cantilever decks and therefore
the value of the deck is included in their
annual property tax bills. The city permits
decks to extend five feet past the seawall.
Many if not most realtors are completely
unfamiliar with the Land Commission’s
rules and therefore don’t disclose this to
their clients.
There are a number of reasons charging a fee for cantilever decks might very
well be against the law. Many homeowners are withholding the cantilever deck
“air tax” fee as well as not paying for dock
fees till all this is settled. Towards that end
Assemblyman Silva is trying to set up a
Town Hall meeting for everyone to have
their say. All Harbour residents should be
thankful to our local legislators for looking
out for us.

The Huntington Harbour Garden
Club February meeting was held at the
home of Marti Klarin with co-hostesses,
Mary Johnston, Barbara Devlin and
Barbara Simone preparing a lovely salad
luncheon and dessert for members and
guests. The Speaker of the Day was Allan
Garofalow of Tuition Growers (tuition
growers.net), a member of the California
Organic Growers who specializes in
growing vegetables and flowers from seed.
He raises unusual and rare flowers from
seeds and supplies local nurseries and was
at one time the main supplier for Mary
Lou Heard’s Garden in Westminster. He
focuses on Cottage Garden plants for the
wholesale nursery. He told us that it was
better to buy small plants rather than
big plants to put into the garden as most
large plants are root bound. Ninety-five
percent of his plants are grown from seed
and he uses a vacuum and puts 288 seeds
at one time into a form with soil. When
the plant has two sets of leaves in the
form it is time to replant the plants in a
4 inch pot. Always pick up the plant by
the leaves—not the stem because you will

dissolve the root ball if you pickup the
plant by the stem. He grows all the seeds
in his own back yard and has clear plastic
over the plants to protect them from
wind and rain and it keeps them warmer
in the winter. Members were thrilled
because he brought rare seedling plants
that many members have been seeking for
years such as the Godetia, Rosy Morn—a
pastel shaded Cosmos. He suggested
feeding plants with bone meal and fish
emulsion. All of his plants are annuals but
they reseed from year to year.
The January HHGC Garden of
the Month Award was presented to the
garden of Kim & Craig Allison who
have installed a drought tolerant garden
at 3922 Finisterre on Davenport Island.
The garden designed by Craig features
a variety of succulents and grasses. The
attractive containers are fashioned from
sewer gauge piping, saved from the scrap
heap by Craig.

Clubhouse off Edinger Ave. Kay and
Barbara brought lots of tomato seeds, pots
and mix for members to plant their own
various tomato seeds. (At the February
meeting Marti Klarin showed member
the seeds she planted in January 2011 and
they are all about 4” tall.) Tomatoes
should be planted in full sun and to
reduce the possibility of disease, don’t
plant your tomatoes in the same spot each
year. Dig a hole at least twice the size of
the container. A healthy tomato plant will
grow deep roots. Tomatoes are tolerant of
most garden soils and will grow without
fertilizers; however your tomato will
appreciate some mild organic fertilizer
or organic mulch dug into the planting
hole. Tomato plants like infrequent but
deep watering. As the tomato grows the
lowest leaves will turn yellow and die over
time. This is normal and not a problem.
Following the interactive tomato growing
program a delicious luncheon was served
and prepared by members, Pearl Holmes,
Hostess and Irene Cooper and Betty
McCarthy, co hostesses of the day. We
were thrilled to have two guests, Melinda
Sakioka and Jo Anne Blair join us for the
meeting and lunch..
The HHGC Garden Of The Month
Award for February was given to the
garden of Mary and Bruch Belcher who
have designed their own drought tolerant
front landscape and patio. This has been
an ongoing project of Mary for many
years and this latest planting is a grand
experiment that has turned out to be
quite attractive. The Japanese Maple tree
and the Plum Tree are particularly attractive in late spring when the plum is in full
blossom. The three gold canyon sunflower
plants (venegasia carpesioides) bloom in
front of the garden wall with gorgeous
yellow flowers in spring. The flowering
melaleuca with its pink pompons is in
bloom most of the year. Spanish lavender
is scattered throughout the native and
succulent garden.
The HHGC is open to all residents
of the Harbour. Meetings are held on the
second Tuesday of the month at 10:00
a.m. in member’s homes. Please call

The Annual FINS “DUMP-IT
PARTY” was held again at the home of
Maggie & Ken Flavia with the assistance
of their son Kevin who usually visits his
parents from Santa Cruz every year to
help with the preparations. The “Dump it
Party” is where you can get rid of any new
gift you received last year that you did
not want or could not use, the sillier the
better. Dinner was a catered affair by the
Olive Pit, a new restaurant on Bolsa Chica
St. that was delicious. The gift theme
this year seemed to be T-Shirts sporting
various slogans Tom Mitchell started
off the evening by opening a package
containing a large shirt that said “Born
Lucky” with a white shamrock on a dark
green background. Bob Beckstrom stole
the “Born Lucky” shirt and was proud
of it. Barbara Simone took home a “Fish
Story” shirt depicting a fish increasing in
size as time goes by. Rita Collins picked
a package with a skiing Snowman. Some
other “Dump It” gifts were a jewelry
bag won by Carol Gallagher, two soft
penguins won by Gloria Sliney but stolen
by Pat Johnson, Maggie Flavia received
the”dump” it gift back that she gave last
year. We can’t want to see who gets it next
year! Every time Maggie opened a package she had it stolen from her four times
in all. Bill Collins won a shirt that said
“I’m retired—having a good time is my
job.” Craig Johnson’s gift was a bottle of
Irish Whiskey but he did not have it long
as Gene Simone stole it from him and
Craig picked out another gift that turned
out to be “nipple warmers” all the way
from Australia. The hit of the evening was
Craig modeling the gift! After gifts members adjourned to the kitchen where they
made their own sundaes with vanilla ice
cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream,

nuts and cherries. Daytime Gourmet Members had a
“Ladies Valentine Luncheon” at the home
of June Ascolesi. June and Mary Johnston,
the co-hostess went all-out with the valentine theme in the red and white table
decorations that included floral arrangements of red camellias as most of us have
only seen pink ones. Every guest received
a Heart decorated bag with valentine
shaped chocolates, homemade Valentine
cookies made by Mary and candy made
by June along with heart shaped fortune
cookie type of fortunes. The main entree
an 11 oz. lobster tail with Lemon butter
along with roasted fingerling potatoes
and roasted asparagus and morels with
Shallot butter. The meal started with
Grape Tomatoes and Bocconcini salad
(buffalo mozzarella cut into small pieces)
and ended with a Cornmeal Cake with
Cherry Compote. Enjoying the wonderful meal was Pearl Holmes, Gloria
Beckstrom, Lois Hohly, Barbara Devlin,
Loretta Maioranna, Marian Galanis and
Shell Grossman.

helped raise money every year to support the group’s philanthropies and each
has served two terms as President of the
Anglers. During Bruce’s first term in 2004
the Anglers by-laws were changed to allow
ladies to serve as officers. In 2008 Kathy
was elected the first lady President since
the Anglers were founded in 1965. Under
Kathy’s leadership the Anglers re-incorporated as a 501-c3 charitable corporation so
the organization could continue to raise
money for the Angler’s philanthropies.

January TGIF
On Friday January 28th 66 Anglers
and guests met at the Trinidad Island waterfront home of Lou and Sue Earlabaugh for
the organization’s January TGIF and 2011
Kickoff. Each of the Anglers brought one
of their favorite appetizers or desserts to be
enjoyed by all and looked forward to the
exciting Anglers TGIF’s, Theme Events
and Fishing Activities planned for 2011.
The Anglers welcomed guests Steve and
Kathy Koser and new members Frank and

Friday evening February 25th nearly
60 Anglers and guests gathered at the
beautiful Coral Cay home of Jim and Joy
Connors for the group’s February TGIF.
The Anglers brought a assortment of
appetizers and desserts to enjoy as they
discussed the upcoming Inland Cruise
parties and golf tournament in the desert
and other planned events. The Anglers welcomed guests Frank and Charlene Cooley
and new members Frank and Virginia
Buccella, Doug and Anne Williams and
Jim and Lee Swearingen.

47th year in the Harbour and upcoming
events include the April 29th TGIF at the
waterfront home of Jeanne Sprague, the
May 27th TGIF at the waterfront home of
Carol Webster, the June 23rd annual Kids
Fishing Trip for at risk children and the
June 25th annual Fish Fry at the waterfront home of Ed and Millie Dempsey. If

The colorful award ribbons matched
the vibrant colors displayed by the works
of art of the 25 winners in the Annual
Fine Arts Show exhibited at the Corner
Gallery of the Central Library. Judge
Diana LoSchiavo chose from the entries
in seven categories including Best of
Show and Viewer’s Choice. She awarded
the first place winners in each category
a gift card from an art supply store.
Chairpersons Betty Viers and Sharon
Larson were aided in their planning by
Carrol Ann Wolf, Stan Wolf and Pat
McKenna who poured the champagne
for the Awards Reception. Catering was
provided by One Fine Blend.
The Art Association used the funds
from the Quilt Raffle at the Fall Fiber
Arts Show to provide a $500.00 scholarship to an art student at Goldenwest
College. The recipient was chosen by a
committee of the college.
The members are looking forward
to the May 10th luncheon at Seacliff
Country Club arranged by Carol Persons
and Dottie Reed. The nominating committee of Kay Sullivan, Carrol Wolf and
Pam Smart will present the slate of officers
of the next year, and the election will take
place at that time. There also will be time
for the Needles and Friends members
to display their “Unfinished Objects”
from their season of quilting, weaving
and stitching. The past Board Members
are looking forward to the Thank You
presents from retiring President Barbara
Larson who has been hinting all season of
the uniqueness of her offerings.
A series of workshops was planned
by Marsha Hendler for this spring. In
March Donna Vogel demonstrated
“Over and Under” a fairly easy and fast
quilting design with bright colors that

Members brought their sewing machines
to Marsha Hendler’s home and shared
experiences and lunch together. Betty
Viers conducted a Collage Workshop in
March at Seagate Yacht Club. Members
brought papers, catalogues and newsprint
to create colorful and amusing works on
a firm board.
T.J. Cooling will conduct a painting
workshop and also show how to make a
jewelry tree later this spring. Members
carpooled to their annual excursion to
Oceanside Museum of Art to enjoy the
exceptional art quilts on exhibit. “No
Boundaries”, the exhibit, moves beyond
the boundary of quilting into the realm
of contemporary fiber art. Carrol Wolf,
Pam Smart, Kay Sullivan, Linda Sackin,
Linda Stevens, Dottie Reed, Barbara
Thorne, Marsha Hendler, Ginny Eide
and Donna Vogel enjoyed lunch at the
Monterrey Cannery after the tour led by

Members at the Christmas Boat Parade dinner.
Saturday Night SGYC held an
impromtu pot-luck dinner a for the
Christmas parade boat decorating crew.
The main dish featured a phenomenal
prime rib that was awarded to us by the
Parade Grand Marshal in recognition of
our contribution and accomplishment at
the 2010 Huntington Harbor Parade of
Lights.
Our prize winning effort could not
have been accomplished without the consistent volunteer help of our enthusiastic

On Sunday, January 16, SeaGate
Yacht Club held their annual Event Hosts’
Brunch. At this meeting Commodore
Les Kelly previewed the numerous social
and boating events for the upcoming year
and introduced all the volunteer hosts for
those events.
Commodore Kelly distributed
information packets to each host with
information from previous events including contacts, activities, previous budgets
and helpful hints.
This event kicks off the year for
Seagate Yacht Club and promises to be
very busy and enjoyable for all of our
members.
More than 100 SeaGate Yacht Club
members, joined by ten new member
prospects, cruised from SeaGate to the
Long Beach Yacht Club on flat water
with clearing blue skies and snow covered
peaks in the distance! The participants in
the annual New Member Brunch, hosted
by Staff Commodore Jim Senske (1968)
and Lyn for the past 22 years, and were
joined this year by Co-Hosts Commodore

Les Kelly and Cathy, enjoyed great food
and conversation while at the Long Beach
Yacht Club.
Captains and First Mates were Greg
and Kathy Lee (Kathleen), Robin and
Jean Clark (Fin-Tastic), Bob and Linda

The 45th Super Bowl was held on
February 6 while SGYC partied at the
Bonaire Clubhouse.
With a real tail gate party, an array
of chili’s, easy and enjoyable games, a
spread of snacks, hot and delicious dogs
and brats, cold and tasty beer and wine,
and plenty of popcorn, how can you miss?
We had fun and energetic people, a great
game (for the Green Bay Fans), and lots of
cash prizes.
Yep, that Super Bowl party is now in
the books. Over 70 members and guests
attended including some new members.
Bob McCormick organized another very
successful football pool, while Dick and
Linda Scholl supplied the tailgate for the
party, the popcorn machine and all the
fi xings.
Candy Cloud organized the Chili
contest while Joel and Sherrill Lander
managed the 50/50 and Debbie Wood
orchestrated the ping pong and football
toss tournaments. Kevin Cloud tended to
the dogs and brats, while Tom Wood held
it all together as master of ceremonies.
All in all a great team of hosts put on a
super……bowl party.
In all, over $1000 in cash prizes were
awarded throughout the afternoon for 8
different events.
Helene Rowlette won for best chili,
and Tom Wood won the 50/50. The
games tournaments were won by Linda
Scholl for the Ping Pong toss and Paul
Brown for the Football toss. Winners of
the Football pool were Cindy Shaw, Les
(guest of DeAnna Stingley), Cliff Meier,
and Dick Scholl took home the big money
as winner of the 4th quarter. What a day!

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club

Tradition and ceremony take command at Opening Day, an annual event
among all yacht clubs to mark the official
opening of the boating season. HHYC,
founded in 1965, will hold its Opening
Day on April 10, kicking the day off with
registration and a continental breakfast
at 11 AM, followed by a boat parade
and “Pass in Revue” salute to the current Club officers, formal ceremonies at
2:00 PM and finally a buffet at 3:30 PM.

Concours d’Elegance on Saturday, April
9, at which many of our members’ boats
will be on display at our docks for viewing by members and guests, and prizes
will be awarded to the best entries in
various categories.
On January 28 the Club hosted
“Wine Knot,” a wine tasting event that
included not only the participating
wineries, but catered food, live music, a
silent auction and gondola rides in the
harbor, all of which raised substantial
sums for the Huntington Beach Sailing
Foundation, known for its annual summer junior sailing school. On February 6,
Club members and their guests enjoyed
a Superbowl Party in our upstairs bar,
and on March 26, the Club became the
scene of a Mardis Gras masked ball, with
dancing to the music of the Dream Trio.
March also brought the first Club
cruise of 2011, in which member cruisers,
coordinated by Fleet Captain Dean
Oliver, joined up with skippers from
several other yacht clubs to form a giant
weekend circular “raft up” in Newport
Harbor.

Another wonderful afternoon was
enjoyed by the ladies of Sea Isle Garden
Club at our February meeting and
Valentine luncheon. VP of Programs,
Carolyn
Platt,
and
Hospitality
Committee, Lucille Mascoli and Cathy
Kelly, made beautiful table decorations
and arranged for tasty salads and desserts
made by members. We had a great time
learning to make three different greeting
cards (Valentine, Birthday and Thank
You), guided by our talented Treasurer,
Carolyn Lloyd, who is also a professional
scrapbook consultant, along with a guest
instructor, Susan Mondragon.
Following our March meeting we
headed off on an excursion to a most
delightful local hidden gem, the “50
Forks Restaurant” at The International
Culinary School at The Art Institute of
California – Orange County, in Santa
Ana. It is Orange County’s student run
bistro and a final quarter curriculum
requirement for culinary students at the
college. It was so interesting to watch
behind glass walls as the students in their
white jackets prepared our delicious and
beautifully presented meals, featuring a
variety of international cuisine.
“Eyes on Edinger,” our volunteer
project to report on issues observed along
the Edinger Parkway landscape each
month, has seen many improvements
made by the City following our monthly
reports, submitted by our Project Liaison,
Dorothy Ralphs. New plantings have
been made, dead plants removed, weeds
are under control and the fence has been
repaired. The latest walks have observed
continued sprinkler issues where excess
water is accumulating on the soil and in
the street. Graffiti has been noticed in a
few areas. A problem has been noticed
between Bonaire and Montego where dog

Brian and Michelle Metherall were fabulously
dressed at “All That Jazz”
All That Jazz
Close to 200 people, dressed in some
incredible outfits, gathered at Old Ranch
Country Club for a night full of toasting,
eating, and dancing. The theme was “All
That Jazz”, and everything from boas to
fedoras were sported. Didi Stanton even
wore a flapper dress (and wore it with
style).
The grand marshal event is an evening to thank the head of our annual boat
parade and to announce the new grand
marshal. Calvin Free did a spectacular job
as our 2010 leader of the parade and his
pinstriped suit was just perfect. THANK
YOU, Calvin. Parade captain Craig Ferguson was
on hand, along with night captains Dean
Stanton, Brian Metherall, and Norm
Huniu. Mike Novak was there in spirit...
but in Park City Utah the night of the
event.
Boat parade committee members
deserved a special thank you. Jenny
Huntsinger and Teresa Nicols chaired,
with assistance from Benita Jacobs, Linda
Parlee, Kim Willingham (in an marvelously chic hat and outfit), Judy Ibarra,
Karen Tribble, and Donna Gray. Also,
many lieutenants were ready to party, and
dance the night away.
Teresa Nichols took the microphone
to talk about the parade, and then went
over to a covered easel, took the covering
off slowly, and the excitement built.
Who is to be our grand marshal
this year? Jenny Huntsinger! Her photo
was unveiled on that easel (Jenny was in
Chicago while the event was going on).
Lots of cheers, applause, champagne and
big smiles all around. This is the first
time in our 49 year parade history that a
woman will be at the helm! YAY JENNY!
There was a jazz singer, Jan Elsen, and
The Yachtsmen performed to a delighted
crowd. Dinner was delicious. HHPC
chairmen Lisa Mulvania and Terri Feterik thanked everyone for all of their volunteer
service.

HHPC: Marina Windjammers

February and March were very busy
months for the Windjammers. Through
weather enhancements and holiday weekends, our group forged on to bring music
to the children of Orange County and our
members.
Our February meeting, at the waterfront home of Margie Finlay, was capped
off with the fine instrument finesse of one
April Cap. This delightful young lady
was not only an excellent oboe player, she
was educational and entertaining. She
demonstrated her skills on this and the
French horn. We are so fortunate to be in
the midst of fine young musicians, and see
them blossom in their craft.
The first week of February saw
the Marina Windjammers utilize the
Music Mobile at Lakeview, Starview
and Huntington Seacliff Schools. Our
very own Carlone Herman oversees this
activity which brings sparkle to the eyes
and ears of many third graders. Our new
van, purchased last year with healthy
donations from many of you, is filled

great tum-out for our February meeting.

cocktail hour meeting? (Which was due
to many just back, that noon, from the
Mexico cruise) Or, that it was held at the
fun Coral Cay home of Terri and Mike
Feterik? Whatever, it was good to see
Norma Kowles, Bobbie Sheldon (in from
the desert), Lee Swearingen, and Janice
Belk, return to the fold!
Our new members were on “overload” with all the clip-boards going
around to sign up for Design house,
ushering for concerts, music mobile-hours
and Grand Marshal ball table seating.
Keeping our reputation as the party
group, we have a big sign-up of members

and sometimes keep the beat along with
the director. We have so many enjoyable
moments in this society and we engage in
new friendships.

2011 got off to a good start in
January when District 10 members got
together at the Huntington Harbour
Yacht Club for Brunch and our
Installation of Officers. We had a significant turnout, giving us an opportunity
to tell our membership of upcoming
events in 2011.
On February 13 we held a Prime
Rib dinner/dance, hosted by the Navy
Yacht Club Long Beach in Bunker 33 of
the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station.
March 6 we organized a wine tasting
event to be held at the Cerritos Bahia
Yacht Club. This unique event was for
IOBG members only.
We will also be having a Boat Safety
Luncheon, several events associated
with one of our favorite charities - the
Charity Regatta. July we will be having
a delicious BBQ event for members only.
July 3 we will be off to the Hollywood
Bowl for a wonderful concert and fireworks display. August features a Luau
with entertainment by “Happy Feet”
an all-girl band. September will feature
Brunch at the Long Beach YC.
October will be a “burn your own
steak” at the Seal Beach YC. Two big
events are scheduled for December - a
Duff y Cruise to see the Christmas decorated homes in Huntington Harbour
and an event featuring the Boat Parade.
Both of these events are for IOBG members only.
We try to schedule an event every
month, sometimes two. We enjoy each
others company, try to contribute something along the way for the betterment
of our community, and just have fun.

are now gearing up for spring! Getting
ready to help the homeless children at
Harbour View, Marina High School, and
Huntington Beach High School.
What do we need? Gift cards in
small amounts to CVS and Von’s, and
toiletries. School supplies (paper, pens,
pencils, glue sticks, crayons) are welcome,
too. MANY thanks to little Sammy
Carter.
At Sammy’s birthday party, he
didn’t request Hot Wheels, or the latest
video games. Sammy wanted monetary
donations to help the homeless children.
Result? Kiwanis of Huntington Harbour
received a generous donation that
will help many. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Newcomers had the best Friendship
Tea this last February. Our Social VPs,
Margaret Humphreys, and Cathy
Kelly, planned for every detail to make
an authentic English tea for all of us to
enjoy. There were fresh flowers, linens,
china and silver serving pieces at each
setting. We had wonderful teas, with
thick cream and sugar. The buffet had
scrumptious fresh baked goods with
scones, sausage rolls, a beautiful red velvet cake, eclairs, huge chocolate covered
strawberries, and finger sandwiches
that were delightful. We had lemon
curd, jams, and Devonshire cream to
add to our blueberry or raison scones.
Plus, cute strawberry trifles to enjoy!
We had a great showing of members
who had fun building on friendships. And we thoroughly enjoyed the artistry
of Margaret, her daughter, and Cathy,
in creating a wonderful cozy feeling for
our English Tea Party.
Our VPs of Social Activities are Margaret Humphreys and Cathy Kelly. Our next events include a Cocktail
Hour event that will be held on April
1st, where members will bring their
favorite appetizer and enjoy an evening
with other couples. Then, we have a
Progressive Dinner event that is still in
the planning stages, and should be a lot
of fun as well. If you are new to Huntington

Trinidad Ladies Group

The February meeting of the
Trinidad Ladies Club was held at at the
beautiful home of new member Sandy
Reynolds. Cocktails and snacks captured
the ambiance of the Valentine theme
evening as members mingled to enjoy a
social time with other members. Since
most meetings are held during the day,
it is special to have an evening meeting
where members can enjoy the company of
those who are employed during the day.
Social time was followed by a brief meeting. After the meeting members enjoyed
a dinner of homemade soups, made by
Hostess Sandy Reynolds and member
Kathy Korneff. There were also salads,
and desserts.
Our March meeting was held on
Tuesday March 1 at the home of Mary
Shebell. The program was presented by B
to Z Organizing. They are specialists in
helping to downsize and organize. This
was an informative meeting just in time
for Spring Cleaning.
