A LETTER FROM
THE 2007 GRAND MARSHAL
JEFF SILVER
“Hello everyone, and ‘Cowabunga’.
My name is Jeff Silver and it is a
privilege to be your Grand Marshal for the
2007 Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Boat Parade.
I would like to get all of you to start
thinking about what your entry might be
for this year’s parade.
To pay tribute to this beautiful city
with its miles of endless surf, we decided
this year’s theme is “Surf City Sounds.”
With your participation in decorating and entering your boat, we will make
this one of the largest and finest parades
ever. I hope you plan to join us for this
spectacular annual event!
I have been involved with the
Huntington Harbour Boat Parade for
more than 30 years as a participant,
lieutenant, Night Captain and Parade
Captain, so I am really excited about this
year’s parade and the opportunity to serve
as Grand Marshal.
I would like to get an early commitment from you so we can start
planning at our end. We have set up the
inaugural Boat Parade Web site at www.
HHBoatParade.org where you can get
entry forms for your home and boat and
other information.
Our official 2007 Parade e-mail
address is: [email protected], or
call me at (714) 840-2534 and leave your
phone number or e-mail so I can keep
you informed of all the parade activities.
As always, we have homeowners who
are willing to dock your boat both nights
in order to help you participate in the
parade.
I would like to thank you again for
your early commitment to ensure we
make 2007 “Surf City Sounds” another
amazing event for all to enjoy.

It’s that time of the year again—time
when our Harbour is brightly lit for the
holidays.
This year’s boat parade theme, “Surf
City Sounds,” lends itself to some magical
ideas. We thank you so much for decorating your on- and off-water homes.
We present the boat parade on Dec.
8 and 9, and we thank you because right
after the boat parade we begin the Cruise
of Lights, Dec. 13-23. We plan to take
close to 20,000 visitors on a narrated
45-minute cruise to see our beautiful
waterways, decorated with thousands of
lights.
Monies raised will go to continue the
music programs for over 250,000 Orange
County school children from kindergarten-12th grade. We couldn’t do it without
you.
Many thanks in advance for continuing to make Huntington Harbour a
sparkling paradise. For information on
entering your home decorations or boat
in the parade, visit www.hhboatparade.

Marina Windjammers
By ELLEN HALOPOFF
Our members are back in full swing
of Philharmonic activities. We kicked off
the season attending the performances of
the Georgian State Dance company and
of Max Raabe and the Palace Orchestra,
both part of PSOC’s generous ticket
offer for committees members. We look
forward to a third fantastic experience
when the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
plays in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom
Concert Hall.
We love music, so when we were
offered the opportunity to hear the
Colburn Orchestra in the Ambassador
Auditorium we carpooled to Pasadena for
a delightful evening.
Locally we took our checkbooks
and credit cards to HHPC’s Boutique
of Lights to get a jump on our holiday
shopping. This followed our October
meeting at Pearl Holmes’ house where
we introduced two more new members
and enjoyed hearing that beautiful piano
again.
A few days later, eight of our ladies
took their busy, happy hands to Islander
Sharon Larson’s home to help stuff envelopes for the Boat Parade mailing.
Community Day at Costa Mesa’s
Arts Plaza found the Music Mobile being
manned by Philharmonic committee volunteers and Pearl assisted a young music
lover test his embouchure on a French
horn.
This year Marina Windjammers are
focusing on becoming acquainted with
all the youth programs presented by the
PSOC committees. We worked the buses
at Saddleback Church where Ancient
Grooves was presented to a very appreciative audience of sixth graders.
November will find us enjoying the
music of the Southern California Brass
brought by “Meet the Musicians” to St.
Bonaventure School . Then it is on to the
Orange County Museum of Art where we
will listen in as high school students hear
the music and see the art of the classic
“Birth of the Cool.” It seems there is a lot
more to Philharmonic’s youth programs
than just the Fifth Grade Concert and

the island residents who attended, as well
as Doug Houston, who performed and
kept us all entertained for the afternoon.

FINS
By BARBARA DEVLIN and PEGGY MOURITZ
FINS members brought out
their lederhosen and dirndls for their
Oktoberfest party at Rancho del Rey
clubhouse, arranged by Craig and Pat
Johnson. Committee members Barbara
Simone, Pearl Holmes, Mary Johnson
and Betty McCarthy cooked bratwurst,
sauerkraut and apple cake and German
beer was available along with wine.
The Seal Beach Art Festival was the
September FINS excursion planned by
excursion chairperson, Gloria Beckstrom.
Joining her for the day were Mary
Johnson, Loretta Maiorana, Barbara
Devlin and Donna and Bob Longman.
Everyone enjoyed the hand-made jewelry
creations, especially Barbara Devlin and
Mary Johnson who purchased some
unique jewelry.
Mary almost came home with one of
the retired Greyhound racing dogs that
was on display for adoption.
Loretta found the homemade jam to
her liking, especially the japaleno jelly,
which she serves as an appetizer with
cream cheese and crackers. As usual,

Flying Dutchman
By ELIZABETH HENRY
Still reveling in another successful
fundraiser, the Flying Dutchman Chapter
had a swell dinner meeting in October.
The event, which was planned by
Marcia Kay and Ron Radalet, was held at
the Riviera at the Fireside in Westminster.
Members, such as Richard and Deanna
Ashby, Cathy and Phil Mc McCullough,
Bob and Frankie Holland sipped
cocktails—including the restaurant’s
impeccably-made martinis—during the
reception.
The hour of visiting was followed by
a three-course dinner that was interrupted
only briefly by a business meeting. Others
in attendance include, Boris and Dorothy
Ralphs, Don and B.J. Lubach, Marlene
and Earl Fordham, Jean Evans, Tom and
Gloria Hyams, Jackie and Ray Coupe,
Bill and Carol Kirkwood, Walt and Diane
Janssen, Floyd and Zana Fields, as well as
Bryant and Elizabeth Henry.
Under discussion was the benefit
shopping day put on by Bloomingdale’s
on Oct. 25. Members were encouraged to
volunteer to help out on the day and to go

shopping for the cause.
In December, Court
and Missy Prowell, will
host a Toys for Tots donation day. In the past our
membership has donated
thousands of dollars
worth of brand new toys
for kids in need during the
holidays.
The year will be
capped off by a trip to the
Orange County Performing Arts Center to watch The Rockettes. With more than 50
people signed up to go, our group will outnumber the high kickers on stage (there are
only 36 of them).
La Traviata
By PEGGY MOURITZ
Mary Busche and committee are
planning an event centered around the
Guild’s Toys for Tots drive in December.
Thinking is a cocktail party, price of
admission being a toy for a tot. Flyer to
come.
La Traviatans have been visiting the
Center a lot this season. Fall for Dance
was a fabulous program, climaxed by
dancers who rapelled from the outside
top of Segerstrom Hall.Halfway down
the wall they performed an aerial ballet,
supported on their ropes. Graceful and
mesmerising. November brought “Jersey
Boys” Guild Night which was well
attended, also Informally Yours presented
“Tango” in Founders Hall., A large contingent from Flying Dutchman and La
Traviata will be enjoying the Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes, dining out
first in the area, later this month.

A Land Lover’s Garden Club
By EUSTELLE BOSLER
Master gardener Catherine Hall,
past president of the Laguna Beach
Garden Club, was the featured speaker
during the Nov. 14 ALL Garden Club
meeting.
Hall’s talk was fi lled with personal
experiences, and it was surprisingly easy
to follow her instructions.
She demonstrated the fascinating art
of topiary, using a variety of garden tools
and materials including sphagnum moss,
narrow gauge wire, and floral clay to create both elegant and whimsical topiaries
for the holidays or just for everyday.
Simple ivy, green moss, fruit such
as apples or lemons, and even fresh roses
can be used to create a miniature spot of
beauty in the garden or in the kitchen.
Most of us returned home determined to try it out ourselves, and the
holidays are a perfect time
In October, some club members
took the morning and early afternoon off
to visit and tour the Sherman Gardens in
Corona del Mar.

and discussion of the great variety of
plants housed there, members treated

Harbourites
By LORAINE GARAFALO
It was a gorgeous, sunny fall day when
Alice and Richard Zamboni welcomed
guests to their beautiful waterfront home
to be treated to a boat tour around the
Harbour. Then it was back to shore for a
gourmet dinner, prepared by Jason Triail,
sous chef from Antonello Ristorante.
Lorraine Garafalo won this prize
of an evening for 18 guests at a charity
raffle sponsored by SPIN (Serving People
In Need). This charity works with the
poor and homeless in Orange County to
enable them to become self-sufficient.
Sue McGraw, SPIN board member,
organized the event while the Zambonis
offered their home, and Chef Triail contributed his culinary talents.
Alice had decorated the tables with
brightly colored cloths from Provinçe
with artfully arranged fresh fruit for
centerpieces.
Two of Alice and Richard’s lovely
granddaughters,
Kimmy
Ginter and Kendal Russell,
graciously helped serve.
The first course of
chilled melon soup was
followed by the entrée of
pork tenderloin roasted with
Italian herbs, garlic masked
potatoes
and
sautéed
green vegetables. Desserts
included a luscious tiramisu,
encrusted fried Brie, and
a selection of cheese and
grapes. Wines and beverages
of choice were served.
Harbourites
enjoying this feast were: Mary
Busche, Char Daly, Arlene
and Gary Dixon, Betty Lou

in October.
By MARGUERITE McENTEE
Little Mermaid Guild has actively
worked with, and supported, the Toyota
Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach for
years. Each year the Foundation donates
a large portion of their raised funds to
CHOC. This year, LMG board members
Susan Dill, Pat Calderone, Joyce Zeleski,
Lynda Edwards, and Sandy Stinton
attended the formal check presentation at
the Aquarium of the Pacific.
Foundation President Rick DuRee,
said that they have done very well this
year, which is good news for Children’s
Hospital of Orange County. Other major
recipients include Long Beach Memorial
Miller, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and
the Boys and Girls Club. Since its inception in 1991, the Grand Prix Foundation
has raised more than $2 million.
Another well-attended event was
the annual CHOC Disneyland walk in
the Park. Three teams walked under the
umbrella of LMG. Everyone enjoyed a
morning of energetic walking, music,
and entertainment by Disney characters.
Many sponsors were stationed past the
finish line at Downtown Disney. They
offered free goodies including a breakfast
of pastries and fruit.
Little Mermaid Guild invites ladies
in our communities to visit any of our
meetings or events. Contact Susan Dill at

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
By REAR COMMODORE JIM WALLACE
Have you found yourself wondering,
“Where in the world has this year gone?”
We feel much that way here at our
yacht club. This year was highlighted by
so many old and brand new events as we
found ourselves trying creative ways to
entertain and delight our members.
On Nov. 3, we had our important formal installation dinner of new flag officers
for 2008. They are: fleet captain, Raymond
Louison; rear commodore, Lloyd Clauss;
vice commodore, Jim Wallace and commodore, Bill Wheeler. 2007 commodore,
Rick Tarantino, moves to being the junior
staff commodore.
Even though November was a holiday
month we found plenty of time to play
and have fun with our fellow members.
For example, we had two great breakfasts
during the first two Sundays of the month.
And, just so you know, all residents of the
Harbour are invited to these. It’s a great
way to meet some of our members and
flag officers and to see whether you would
enjoy joining our club as well.
We call these breakfasts “All You Can
Eat Till It All Runs Out.” So come join
us and get more information on our fun
and active club. It’s only a lousy $10 and
it’s fun!
We also had our happy hour Fridays
with good food, fellowship and drink and
are even considering expanding our bar
service in the future. In addition to these,
we hosted Comedy Night Live From
the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club,
a sit-down, waiter-served styled upscale
dinners, fashion show, and the list goes on
and on.
With December upon us, the club will

in booking the club during
December of next year, it’s best if
you do so early in the year as so
many people begin booking the
club for the following December,
in January through March, so
don’t wait.

In closing, allow us as members of the
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club to wish
each and every one of you a joyous and
merry holiday season and may each of you
discover that 2008 will be your best and
most fun year ever!
If you’re not currently involved in one
of our numerous organizations that do so
much good for charitable organizations, or
for the residents of the Harbour, or even
provide opportunities for your creative
release in whatever you enjoy doing, why
not make your first new year resolution
be to join one of these fine organizations?
You’ll be very glad you did!

Huntington Harbour Garden Club
By BARBARA DEVLIN
The September meeting of the
Huntington Harbour Garden Club was
held at the home of Connie Mandic
with co-hostesses Pearl Holmes, Virginia
Whipple and Barbara Simone assisting
with the luncheon following the meeting.
The Speaker of the Day was Jan Smith
of “Wild Birds Unlimited” who spoke
on attracting wild birds to our backyard
garden. And the HHGC certainly chose
the perfect home for this program! It
seems that Connie Mandic has an Anna
Apple tree in her yard that was covered
by finches and hummingbirds while the
program was going on. You need to create a refuge in the backyard with food,
water, and shelter to help birds raise their
young if you want to attract small birds.
Regarding food you have to know what
kind of beaks the birds have that you
want to attract —the great heron digs
in water for food, the mockingbird does
not have a strong beak and eats worms,
insects and suet while crows and sparrows
eat seeds because they are ground feeders.
You should let the bird store know what
kind of bird you wish to attract but buy
the seed without filler because the birds
will not eat the filler and you will have a
mess on the ground. It is very important
to keep the nectar in bird feeders clean.
Hummingbirds are around all year, so
consider an easy-to-clean feeder and use
four parts water to one part sugar. Since
hummingbirds are very territorial please
put other feeders away from their feeder.
The SEPTEMBER GARDEN OF
THE MONTH AWARD was given to
the home of Laurie & Hugh Connors at
17152 Westport Drive (Mainland). The
Connors garden which is set on a wide
corner lot, was carefully planned on their
computer, influenced by Asia design;
they spaced their plants apart, filling in
the ground space with bark, Guided by
height, color & texture they created a
striking look using mostly natives and
drought-resistant plants. White birch
trees dominate the differenct spaces,
surrounded by clumps of flax, kangaroo
paws, pineapple trees, freeform society
garlic, and various perennials in a color
scheme of white, pinks, lavenders, purples
and an occasional accent of yellow. Rock
stepping stones provide access to the

middle areas. The curving corner is a
raised brick terrace with a contemplation
bench. Geraniums, evening primroses,
Russian sage, plumeria, and amaryllis are
also used and the parkway is included in
the plan.
Treasurer, Sherry Bullock, hosted the
October luncheon meeting at her home
with the assistance of co-hostess Barbara
Simone. Gisele Schoniger, organic educator of Kellogg Supply, Inc. spoke to
members about using organic fertilizers
which improve the soil as well as the plants,
they are natural and living organisms. The
four essential soil elements are minerals,
organic matter, water and air. Compost
should be added to all gardens—compost
is a rich source of organic matter and it
improves soil structure, holds moisture
and reduces erosion, immobilizes and
degrades pollutants, and suppresses
soil-borne diseases and plant pathogens.
Ninety percent of all organic planar mix
has mycorrhizal mycelium, a fungus, in it
which feeds small feeder roots, the fungus
feeds the plant and the plant feeds the
fungi; roots are a food source for fungi.
She told us that all gardeners should use
kelp meal, a seaweed extract in the garden
and to use “Amend” if you have hard soil.
She presented plant magazines, a Fall and
Winter Planting Guide and samples of
Gro-Power to members.
The garden of Lance and Diane
26
Plott, 16812 Bolero Lane (Davenport)
was awarded the OCTOBER GARDEN
OF THE MONTH AWARD. The Plotts
have been working on their garden for
many months and have achieved a harmonious design, a symphony of greens
and whites and varied textures that make
an outstanding display. An Italianate
wall with two urns, lushly planted with
licorice and succulents, screen the central
entryway to the house. Below it a square
area with borders of acorus, fescue and
black mondo grass, frame a profusion of
white snowball rose bushes. To the left,
an interesting border of ajuga (“chocolate
chip”) edges the garden area—it has the
useful quality of being treadable. Flax,
sage, and rosemary for accents, as well
as some white rocks, are backed by king
palms and the lacy charm of liquid silver
trees. Hidden in the foliage are misters,
sprayers and drippers, on timers, for automatic care of water requirements.
The Plotts have used a wide variety of
unusual plants, mostly drought resistant.
The Plotts have done all the work on this
garden themselves.

Wanderlust Ski Club
By DOLORES MOVIUS
Twenty years of skiing together
has formed bonds of friendship, lasting
memories and lively competition among
the members of Wanderlust.
Beginning with the first trip to Park
City, Utah in 1987, the club has traveled
to Europe, Canada and most ski resorts in
the western United States.
“Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble”
was introduced as the official theme song
on a trip to Jackson Hole. The logo of a
mountain with ski tracks was developed
for clothing and stickers on helmets.
There is an annual NASTAR and
club race with presentation of medals to
winners. A trophy is awarded to the male
and female skier with the best raw times of
the race. Additionally, the most-improved
skier and the most-inspirational member
of the year receive acknowledgement with
trophies. Inspirational indeed!
With passing time, some of the group

Others have had various types of surgeries, which do not deter the determined.

Allison Childers: ‘She embraced life’
By EVA KILGORE
“You were the only person I knew
that could walk into a room full of
strangers, and walk out with a room
full of friends,” said Brittany Childers
in the memorial
book for her
mother, longtime
Harbourite
Allison Childers.
Allison lost
her courageous
battle with breast
cancer on Sept.
22, and left this
Allison Childers
community a
1958-2007
little less vibrant.
Nearly 300 people attended a
heartfelt service-with the crowd spilling
outside the chapel. Just as many came to
the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club for
a life celebration.
A montage of photos showing
Allison skiing, helping out at the
National Charity League, boating,
relaxing and having fun, was
accompanied by some of her favorite
songs. Many were picked out by Allison,
in preparation for a day she knew was
coming.
Allison was a fighter until the end.
Even after losing all of her hair, she’d put
on a turban that matched her outfit, and
go on as if nothing were wrong.
She continued running her home,
giving advice and support to daughter
Brittany, step-daughter Corri Gran, and
nephew Kyle Rudolph, who she’d helped
raise. Conversations were bright and
cheery with stepmother Elena Phoms. A
love affair with husband Jim, and life,
never diminished.
Whether Allison was working at
the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Committee office answering phones, or
playing Bunco, this 100-pound dynamo
made everyone around her feel special.
“She embraced life up until the
end,” said Jim.

MAKO SHARK SEMINAR
AND TOURNAMENT
Members of the Harbour Rod
and Reel Club gathered Sept. 25 at the
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club to learn
techniques from “Mako” Matt Potter
about fishing for the elusive mako shark.
Attendees learned where to look for mako
sharks, what tackle is required, chumming
and bait selection techniques, fighting a
shark, and boating or safely releasing.
Four days later, seminar attendees
put their newly acquired wisdom to use
in the inaugural HR&RC Mako Shark
Tournament. Eight boats participated
including Escape from Gialcatraz (Capt.
Chris Gialketsis), Extremist (Capt. Ron
Levin), Invader (Capt. Jim Persons), Lady
Diana (Capt. Dave Casey), New Boat
(Capt. Peter Fellows), Retriever (Capt.
Bruce Masterton), Tapped Out (Capt.
Si Taylor) and Breakaway (Capt. Matt
Potter). The participating boats fished
between Redondo Canyon, the Avalon
Bank, the Outer Rigs and the Shipping
Lanes. More than a dozen mako sharks
were caught and released, and three were
weighed in.
First place in the release division went
to Jim Persons. In the weigh-in category,
first place went to Duane Wentworth,
second place to Jim Persons and third

to the young anglers on how to cast, catch
and release, and important safety tips.
On Oct. 1, the children ages 6 to 12
put their new learning to work by participating in the Harbour Rod & Reel Club
Kids In-Harbour Fishing Derby organized
this year by John Boucher. The kids fished
in the harbor between the Pacific Coast
Highway bridge and the Warner bridge
and caught nearly 20 fish, including bone
fish, two octopi, a shark, a sting ray, eight
yellow fin crocker, a calico bass, two sand
bass and a mussel.
Harbour Rod & Reel Club Kids In-Harbour Fishing Derby top angler Victoria Sabatino and
her father,Tony.
The top angler of the day was
Victoria Sabatino, 6, with 15 caught and
released fish. Second place went to Ashley

Bolsa Chica Land Trust
By FLOSSIE HORGAN
Bolsa Chica has an amazing abundance and diversity of bird species. On
Dec. 31, 2006, for the national Christmas
Bird Count, a team of Audubon birders
counted 23,173 individual birds and 135
species at Bolsa Chica on that single day.
Once again the Bolsa Chica Land
Trust is offering its beautiful full-color
2008 “Wings over Bolsa” calendar. This
is a perfect holiday gift. The calendar is
$10, or five for $40.
The birds in the calendar are a mere
sampling of the variety of birdlife that
comes to Bolsa Chica during the year.
The cover features the California
Brown Pelican, with its wingspan of 84
inches. There are also images of Whitetailed Kites in an in-flight courtship
display, the rare Pacific Loon in breeding
plumage, Black-Necked Stilts, an Osprey
grabbing a large fish in its talons, RedTailed Hawk in flight, to mention just a
few of the beautiful images.
Most of the photographers are local

Harbour soldier welcomed home by Playboy Bunnies
Family party held surprise
guest appearances by Hugh
Hefner’s playmates.
By EVA KILGORE
Little did Pfc. Garrett Ferguson
know that the huge welcome home party
parents Diane and Craig Ferguson threw
at their Harbour Home, would have one
big surprise.
After nine months in Baghdad,
where Ferguson was a gunner on top of a
Humvee, he was glad to be home and see
friends and relatives.
In the middle of the party, a black
limo pulled up to the on-water Davenport
Island home and three Playboy Bunnies
got out to greet him.
Tina Marie Jordan, and twins Sandy
and Mandy Bentley were on hand to lend
support. All three were former girlfriends
of Hugh Hefner, and caused quite a stir
among the 200 gathered for the party.
WELCOME HOME, SOLDIER: Playboy Bunnies Mandy Bentley and Tina Marie Jordan
(center) pose with Pfc. Garrett Ferguson and his dad, Craig.
Mom Diane had bunny visit. She
knew Jordan through a doctor she worked
for, and Jordan worked through Playboy
Enterprises to surprise the soldier on leave.

Ferguson is back in action now, with many
memories to share with his buddies.
“We are so proud of him,” said Diane.
“We certainly are,” echoed dad.
Seabelles at HHYC
By PEGGY MOURITZ
Two great programs over the past
two months have drawn good crowds to
Seabelles meetings, which are held on the
first Wednesday of the month.
First there was a fascinating presentation from Bowers Museum titled, “The
History of Fashion.”
For example: Why did ancient Greeks
drape their outfits? Because thread had
not been invented!
In November, Cathy Thomas, food
editor of the Orange County Register gave a
timely talk on “Fabulous Foods for Holiday
Entertaining.” Cathy, a USC graduate and
resident of Huntington Beach, won a firstplace award from the Association of Food
Journalists for Best Food Editor.
Mim Strickler has been the innovative
Cruise Director, responsible for programs
over the past year.
The nominating committee, under
Carol Webster, has come up with a fine
new board. Members will take office at
an installation dinner, slated for Dec. 21
at the club.
Make your reservations now for this
very special evening when Capt. Mike
Nielsen will hand over the wheel to Shirley
Wallace.
For information about Seabelles at
the Huntington Beach Yacht Club, call
the club at (562) 592-2186.

With the city of Huntington Beach
committed to contributing $122,000 to
the Edinger Parkway, combined with
our local resident commitment and the

NOVEMBER RECAP
Our members are busy pulling
out their favorite cookie recipes and
enjoying our very traditional dinner
and cookie exchange hosted by Lynne
Wilhelm and arranged by our president, Evanne Connors.
We all go home with a wonderful
array of cookies. Our social committee, comprised of Adrienne DeWolfe,
Kathy Bunch and Jan Nagele, has been
busy coordinating events.
The annual Duffy ride from
home-to-home for the progressive
dinner was a great success. We thank
Sloan and Mike Gallipeo, Jan and Ray
Nagele and Kathy and Ernie Bunch for
opening up their homes. The turnout
was great!
Then we changed directions just a
little, and had a fun evening with a chili
cook-off. The evening was warm and
beautiful. Barbara and Ron Steinberg
graciously offered their lovely home for
the event. The bantering was fun as
we judged the chili
recipes with a first
and second prize.
Between all the
delicious food, we had
a wonderful treat at
our board and general
meeting on Nov. 1.
Our community
coordinator, Marilyn
Sanders, invited a very
special member in our
club, Rev. Barbara
W hite-Steinberg,
to give an uplifting
and inspiring speech.

Kiwanis Club

Harbour
By EVA KILGORE
ADOPTING FAMILIES
FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The newly formed Kiwanis Club of
Huntington Harbour is off to a super
start! The club held its first official meeting on Oct. 28 at the home of Eva and
Lyle Kilgore.
With 32 members, the Kiwanis
Club has immediately adopted three
needy families for the holidays. We are
benefitting underprivileged Harbour
View School children, their parents and
siblings. Members delivered turkey dinners with all the trimmings to the families
for Thanksgiving.
Then, the same families are providing us with wish lists and will get some
special holiday presents in December.
In the spring, the club is looking
ahead to taking children who are in need
shopping for clothing.
The club was formed because of a
need right here in our own community to
help underprivileged children.
If you are interested in joining the
Kiwanis Club of Huntington Harbour,
call Barbra Snegg at (562) 592-5300.
We’d love to welcome you!
THIRD KIWANIS CLUB IN HB
The Kiwanis Club of Huntington
Harbour is the third Kiwanis club in
Huntington Beach and is part of Kiwanis
International, based in Indianapolis,
Indiana.
Each club helps children and mentors kids and teenagers in local schools.
Our new Kiwanis Club of
Huntington Harbour meets once at
month at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday.
We meet in members’ homes.
The Kiwanis Club of Surf City meets
every Tuesday for breakfast at Huf’s, and
the Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach
(the original one in HB) meets every
Tuesday at noon at Meadowlark.
If you are interested in volunteering
and helping local children by joining the
Kiwanis Club, call club President Barbra
Snegg at (562) 592-5300.
