A Land Lover’s Garden Club
by Eustelle Bosler
ALL Garden Club president Lynn
Senske presided over the January 20
meeting at which our featured speaker
was Annie Hall, the Orange County
Garden Clubs District Chair (as well as
a very knowledgeable rosarian). Annie
shared a number of excellent ideas about
the care and nurture of roses; in addition, she pointed out new rose hybrids
and reminded rose lovers among us (who
isn’t?) what old bushes need in pruning
care in the Southern California area.
Annie Hall is a frequent speaker at our
meetings, and she always brings a wealth
of delightful and useful information.
Following her talk, Ms. Hall answered
questions from members as we sat down
to a lovely luncheon at the Yacht Club.
In February, Donna Gray, the
Treasurer of ALL, has made arrangements for a trip to Claremont in order
to visit the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical
Gardens there. The RSABG is the largest
botanic garden dedicated exclusively to
California’s native plants. The garden’s
mission statement is the promotion of
“botany, conservation, and horticulture
to inspire, inform, and educate the public
and the scientific community about
California’s native flora.” We especially
will be looking for the large collection
of Manzanitas, which flower from late
November through early March.
The March 17 meeting of the ALL
Garden Club will feature Keith Rattay,
Landscape Architect for the city of
Mission Viejo, who has a number of
wonderful insights about good design to
accommodate small spaces.
In the next few months, we plan to
visit the San Juan Capistrano Mission and
gardens via rail. Member Terri Feterik is
making arrangements for this delightful
excursion in April.
Of course, we’re looking forward to
our annual outing to the horse races at
Santa Anita this spring, as well.
So many wonderful plans to look
forward to--- We continue to invite all of
you who have an interest in these kinds of
activities to join us!

Bolsa Chica Land Trust
by Roger Bloom
Some CPR for the Bolsa Chica Mesa
Community Promoted Restoration
Promises to Revive 120 Acres with an
innovative plan and initial funding in
hand, the Bolsa Chica Land Trust is
embarking on an ambitious 10-year
project to restore native habitat on the
uplands portion of the Bolsa Chica ecological reserve.
The restored uplands will provide
vital ecological support to the wetlands
below, by making the area more hospitable to Canada geese, hawks, osprey,
and a broad range of other animals and
plants. Dubbed “CPR for the Mesa” –
with CPR standing for “Community
Promoted Restoration” -- the project
will be accomplished using innovative,
energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive techniques. The plan also envisions
working with Golden West College and
other institutions to help create some of
the innovative equipment needed and to
staff the project with interns and volunteers.
“We’re very excited,” said Kim
Kolpin, director of the Bolsa Chica
Stewards, the restoration team of the
Bolsa Chica Land Trust. “This is going
to be one of the most important community-based restorations the state has ever
seen.”
The heart of the CPR plan is the
creation of four so-called Terra Farms,
and the heart of each Terra Farm will
be an innovative “nursery in a box.” As
engineered and designed by Guy Stivers
of Stivers and Associates, all equipment,
materials, supplies and fencing for the
nursery fit within two shipping containers. At the nursery site the containers
become storage and office space. The
nursery uses solar power and is completely self-contained, has zero run off,
zero waste, and all aspects of it, including
the gravel it sits upon, can be completely
stowed in the containers, moved, and
reinstalled elsewhere on the Mesa within
three days.
Each Terra Farm will be a half-acre
site immediately adjacent to the ‘nursery
in a box’ where the native grassland plant
species will be established and farmed
for seed for the larger restoration effort.
The seed for these species is expensive,
particularly for the 65 acres of grassland
the state Department of Fish and Game
would like established on the Mesa for
A great horned owl nests on the Bolsa Chica Mesa. The planned restoration project will increase the habitat
for owls and other birds of prey, as well as many other animal and plant species. Photo by Dr. Vince Thomas
foraging habitat. (There has been a critical loss of coastal grassland habitat. Bolsa
Chica is unique in that there are 120
acres of upland habitat directly adjacent
to the 1,200 coastal wetlands where
native grassland can be re-established.)
While operational, each Terra Farm will
have water, food and shelter for wildlife,
providing a habitat as well as a native
seed bank. When removed, the Terra
Farm and nursery site becomes a seasonal
ponding area, further enhancing the
restoration.
The Land Trust recently received a
grant of $77,000 from the National Fish
and Wildlife Foundation to fund the first
‘nursery in a box’ and Terra Farm. The
Land Trust will finalize permits from
the Department of Fish and Game and
perhaps the Coastal Commission while
working with Golden West College’s
Environmental Studies Department on
the construction of the first nursery.
Once the first nursery is up and running, it will be time for the nitty-gritty of
science. GIS/GPS mapping will be used
to chart the locations, species and numbers of plants installed and their growth.
Several Bolsa Chica Stewards leadership
members will be trained to use this
technology and will then train college/
university interns in how to gather the
8
information on site. Visual inspections
of the project will be done weekly by the
project team members and information
documented on project spread sheets. In
addition, there will be periodic soil tests
carried out by college students as well as
by hired agronomists to determine soil
nutrients, carbon sequestration, biotic
and abiotic life to a depth of 24 inches.
The monitoring will be done by project
staff, volunteers, students, and by the staff
of the Department of Fish and Game.
The CPR plan also calls for collaboration with Golden West College and
others to create educational programs and
study projects for students to use Bolsa
Chica as a living laboratory. With local
partners, the project also will provide the
public with opportunities to volunteer
and assist with the restoration.
If all goes according to plan, in 10
years the Bolsa Chica Mesa will be a
thriving area of native California grasses
and wildflowers, supporting a large
population of birds and animals, and
providing the data and experience to
drive similar restoration projects around
the world.

out how you can help, please contact the

Christmas cooks left to right: June Ascolesi, Pearl Holmes, Loretta Mariana, Shell Grossman, Mary
Johnston and Betty McCarthy
The holiday season always starts
early for FINS with their always fun Gift
Exchange party This year Donna Longman
was the gracious hostess at her festively
decorated home. Members enjoyed a hearty
buffet of appetizers and desserts first, then
the exchange kept the laughs going as gifts
from the colorful pile were opened, “stolen”
in many cases, back to the pile, then maybe
a second steal. Elves, some animated, were
the popular “steal” this year.
FINS Daytime Gourmet Members
gathered at the home of Hostess Pearl
Holmes for their Annual Christmas
Luncheon. Pearl went all out this year with
her Christmas decorations as this was her
first year in her new home. Her co-hostess
in planning this December Luncheon was
Marian Galanis. While the main entre, a
pork roast with quince and apple compote
(prepared by Betty McCarthy) was cooking
in the oven, members gathered in the living
room to enjoy June Ascolesi’s appetizers of
prosciutto rolls and crab almond spread
with crackers and enjoy the opening of
their Christmas Exchange of goodies and
cooking gifts. The hit of the day was a slicing machine and cheese grater purchased
on the internet by Jerry Galanis for Marian
who brought one of the machines to the
gift exchange! Members always steal June
Ascolesi’s candy and cookie tray, Loretta
Mariana’s homemade pizelle cookies and
Betty McCarthy’s homemade delicacies.
The cooks then returned to the kitchen
for the rest of the cooking where Loretta
Mariana prepared squash gratin, Marian
and Barbara Devlin prepared holiday snow
peas with red pepper and green onions
and Shell Grossman and Barbara Devlin
completed the quince and apple compote.
Dessert was a lovely Tiramisu prepared by
Mary Johnson in advance. The menu on
Christmas was from “Saveur” Magazine.

Newcomers
Well we have been having too much
fun, in fact, we have been so busy with
holiday events , that we forgot last month
to stop and tell you all about it. All in an
effort, mind you, that you will be induced
to join us for the upcoming events of the
New Year 2010.
We had our annual cookie exchange
and what an extraordinary time it was.
The evening was magical, not only did
we taste the best, innovative, creative,
mouthwatering cookies you’ve ever
tasted but the fellowship that night was
festive and bright. People were enjoying
the Christmas Spirit together, sharing,
laughing and having a really good time.
Next year, we’d like to see you there!
We initiated our first HHNC lunch
bunch, a time we can stop for lunch and
get refreshed physically and emotionally. You know how much fun it is when
women get together for no particular
reason but we always end up encouraging
each other, giving advice, and getting
support and sharing our vision. It’s a
sense of camaraderie and we all need the
love, so come and visit with us.
Another gathering that is so nice
and intimate is our bi-weekly coffee club
at Starbucks on Warner at the Ralphs
Shopping Center. This is a morning
meeting, and such a lovely way to start
the day. You can imagine the topics we
girls can cover and it’s great to have as
many as can come join the ‘hub.’
We want to convey just how nice it
is to join a club where you are welcomed
and appreciated and where you can meet
a great group of people, wanting to meet
you. We want to welcome all, who have
moved to Huntington Harbor in the last
three years, to join us for the New Year of
Friends, Fun and Family.
Please support our advertisers.

Huntington Harbour Garden Club
by Barbara Devlin, Doreen Hill & Peggy Mouritz
The Garden Club’s annual Christmas
Party was held at the home of Doreen
Hill and members prepared the wonderful luncheon of ham, scalloped potatoes,
cranberry sauce, vegetables and desserts. HHGC supports gardening at several
elementary schools and this year received
a request from Marina High School that
is planning to re-establish the garden in
front of Marina High and we decided to
make a donation to Marina this year also. We also contribute to the native garden
at Golden West College. We have supported the Children’s Garden at Margaret
Landell Elementary School (a California
Distinguished School) for several years,
and this winter the children have already
planted their winter vegetables (broccoli,
cauliflower & cabbage) their paper whites
are in bloom and the sweet peas are planted.
This year as a “Thank You” for the support
of the Huntington Harbour Garden Club
the elementary students decided to make
hand made tray favors which the HHGC
make for the “Meals on Wheel” program at
the Rogers Senior Center. Several members
brought the tray favors to the Senior Center
after the Christmas meeting. The HHGC
also maintains the rose bushes at the Senior
Center and makes a Donation each year for
the programs at the Senior Center.
After the luncheon every year
the HHGC have a Christmas Floral
Arrangement Show and the winners
this year were Barbara Simone and Pearl
Holmes. The December Garden Of The
Month Award was presented to the garden
of Donna & Jim Gray, 3782 Humboldt Dr.
(Humboldt Island). The garden is on an
always landscaped corner. The Grays have
incorporated Christmas decorations in a
tasteful design. Two tall king palms have
wrapped trunks with red and white tiny
lights and at the foot three large festively lit
packages. The house is outlined in unusual
lights in shades of aqua, red, yellow & lime.
These are matched by same colored tiny
lights which illuminate two New Zealand

areas which edge the lawn feature a number
of geranium species, lavender, gazania,
silvery hyssop, podocarpus, day lilies and
rosemary.
The HHGC’s November meeting was
held at the home of Norma Gibbs with
co-hostesses, Mary Johnson and Gloria
Beckstrom in charge of the Continental
Breakfast. The Program Speaker of the day
was Evelyn Weidner of Weidner’s Gardens
in San Diego County. Evelyn Weidner
always brings and introduces new plants to
garden members wherever she speaks and
this day was no exception. She showed a new

they like it chilly and they can bloom into
summer and then go dormant. In late summer we should start to water again when
the new foliage starts but cut off al of the
old foliage. Mrs. Weidner brought several
new Poinsettia plants for us to view: Ice
Crystal with variegated leaves, Dolce, a new
spread plant, and a Burgundy Poinsettia. Water your Poinsettias once or twice a week
and don’t let them dry out, feel the soil (It
should be cool & moist). If the leaves fall
off the plant, it is dead. Don’t let the plant
sit in water. After flowers fall off, cut the
poinsettias back by St.Pat’s Day. Cut 1/3 off
plant, water & fertilize, and plant in a bigger pot or in the garden. It needs 11 hours
of darkness to bloom again. She also told us
that Christmas Cactus also needs 11 hours
of darkness at night and that it does not
like to be watered when it is dormant. All
nature relates to sunlight. She introduced
member to a new house plant “Crossandra,”
an orange blooming inside plant that will
bloom all the time inside a sunny window,
be sure to pinch off the dead flowers to keep
it blooming.

Huntington Harbour Ski Club
by Jeanie Gibson
Happy Holidays! The Huntington
Harbour Ski Club celebrated our annual
Christmas Party on December 16. The
party was held at the beautiful waterfront
home of Jeanie and Frank Gibson. The
main channel provided us with colorful
views of the brightly lit homes and all of
the boats going by.
The festive décor put everyone in
the holiday mood. The bar was busy with
happy, thirsty party goers who enjoyed
the delicious appetizers. Then we were all
treated to a delicious dinner provided by
TGIS catering. The weather cooperated
which turned out to be a beautiful evening.
We are planning a trip to Mammoth
in mid January, a trip to Utah in February,
and another trip to Mammoth in March.
We have a great, fun loving ski club
that meets once a month. We have a social
hour, meeting and dinner. Please give
Lesley Herbold, our membership chair,
a call if you are interested in joining our
wonderful club, 714-374-6834.

SeaGate Yacht Club
by Joel Lander
The Seagate Yacht Club had a banner year with membership at an all time
high and better turnouts for nearly all
their events. The coming year, with John
Humphreys as Commodore, promises
even more fun and camaraderie .
The membership wishes everyone
a wonderful New Year of health, happiness, prosperity and, of course, fun.
Commodore’s Ball
The 2009 Commodore’s Ball was yet
another great Seagate Yacht Club event.
The Eagles Nest Clubhouse at the Navy
Golf Course in Cypress provided a beautiful setting. Everyone was in their formal
attire and looking grand. Tom McKnew
continued tradition by delivering the
invocation. After a delicious steak and
salmon dinner, the program was started
by Treasurer Josef Davydovits leading
the Pledge of Allegiance followed by
Vice Commodore John Humphreys leading the singing of God Bless America.
Commodore Ray Nagele then thanked
the 2009 Board with a gift of a framed
flag and plaque of the office they held.
The Commodore’s trophy was then
presented to the 2010 Commodore, John
Humphreys. Junior Staff Commodore,
Cleve Sproule took over as the Installing
Officer. Commodore Humphreys then
presented flags to his new board. Cleve
Sproule swore in the board, officers and
then the new Commodore.
Ray and Jan Nagele were presented
with a beautiful gift of jackets, hats, and
numerous towels monogrammed with
“The White Rose”, the name of their new
boat. The band Hot Pocket then kicked
in with excellent dance music. A great
time was had by all.

Sea Isle Garden Club
by Caron Mount
Director of Public Works Travis Hopkins, Dorothy Ralphs, SIGC President
Janet Littlejohn, and HB Mayor Cathy Green accepting the $122,000 check
for the Edinger Parkway from the Huntington Harbour community.
Please be patient as the construction
continues on the Edinger Parkway west
of Saybrook. The solar powered irrigation
system should be completed soon, and then
the soil will be prepared for the plants and
trees. It has taken seven years since Anne
White and Dorothy Ralphs started Sea Isle
Garden Club to get this far. On December
21 our President, Janet Littlejohn, and
Project Liaison, Dorothy Ralphs, presented
a check for $122,000 to the City of
Huntington Beach for the community’s
share of the project costs. There are so
many residents of the Harbour who have
contributed toward that goal and we thank
you all for your support. But we are not
finished; we have plans for even more
improvements to the Edinger Parkway.
You can learn more about the Project
and have a great time during our 10:00 a.m.
February 3rd meeting at Seagate Clubhouse
on Bonaire Circle. Lolly McHardy, VP
Ways and Means, will share the plans for
the May 21st Luau Fund Raiser.
Sea Isle members thoroughly enjoyed
our Holiday Party on December 9th, at
the festive Trinidad home of Carolyn
Platt. With her hospitality committee,
Lucille Mascoli and Cathy Kelly, she
planned a fabulous afternoon. We had a
delicious luncheon with turkey and ham,
along with some special side dishes and
desserts prepared by our member chefs.
The abundant array of home-made holiday
cookies delighted us all, with each of the 21
ladies taking home an assortment. We even
added cookies to the gift cards, money, and
presents we brought for a local family in
need of extra support this holiday season.
Jeannette Hepp and Janet Littlejohn
delivered the gifts for the family the next
day, providing all of us with a warm feeling
in our hearts. We laughed and teased
amicably during our own gift exchange,
with a few special items being held by a
series of temporary owners, until finally
‘frozen’ in the hands of the lucky recipient.

delightful story.
In January, SIGC gathered at the
waterfront home of Caron Mount, where
members welcomed the Orange County
District Garden Club’s Director, Annie
Hall-Bosche. Annie has had a Landscape
Design business for almost 20 years,
and is popular with gardeners in Orange
County and beyond. She published articles
in Sunset Magazine, Orange County
Register, and the Los Angeles Times. She
has been commentator on Home and
Garden TV, “Weekend Landscaping”,
and her work was featured at the Orange
18
County Philharmonic House of Design.
She also teaches classes at Saddleback
College. At our meeting she gave us
practical tips and advice on a variety of
gardening subjects.
Sea Isle Garden Club members
are joining ALL Garden Club on their
February 17th excursion to Rancho Santa
Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont. There
will be a one-hour walking tour of the
unique collections contained within the
gardens. We will follow the tour with
lunch in Claremont Village, which is full
of interesting shops. If you are interested
in joining us, please call Donna Davis,
SIGC’s Vice President for Programs.

Kiwanis of Huntington

Wanderlust

by Eva Kilgore
What fun we had during the holiday
season! Our club purchased complete turkey
dinners and delivered them to 5 deserving
families in need. All of the children in these
families attend Harbour View Elementary
School and Marine View Middle School.
Then, we adopted 14 children for the
holidays, and with donations from the Ross
Family Foundation and 808 Investments, LLC
(Patrick and Parvaneh’s Company), we bought
$100 worth of clothes and toys for each child at
Target. The looks on their faces when we delivered all of these holiday bags of goodies was
truly priceless. Huntington Harbour Kiwanis
also supplied gift cards to our local high school
students in need.
Many thanks to our members who delivered, bought, and supported our holiday efforts!
Next up is a shopping spree in the Spring for
our needy kids, and the dedication of a special
plaque at Marina High School for Sammy’s
Closet, the room where our purchased school
supplies and toiletries are housed.
We’d love to have your support. Please call
Eva at 714-840-5090 if you’d like to help.
From left President Sharon Neidringhaus, Duncan Robertson, Paul

Wanderlust Skiers put the final touches on a great year with a Christmas
party at the Humboldt Island home of John and Gayle Wayne shortly before
Christmas. The buffet tables sagged with an assortment of member prepared
delights, and the group was festive and happy, enjoying the lights on the water
and warmth of good friends. More than 55 members and a few guests enjoyed
the cheerful atmosphere and talked about great ski trips enjoyed in the recent
past.
President Sharon Neidringhaus held a brief meeting to update the group
on the emerging plans for trips to Beaver Creek in January, Park City in
February and Mammoth in March. Trip chairs brought both enthusiasm and
some real bargain conditions for the trip ahead. See you on the slopes!

Boat Parade Sweepstakes winners at the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club are all smiles after the HHPC 2009 parade!
What a season! HHPC chairman
Susan Qaqundah is grinning from ear
to ear, as our boat parade and Cruise of
Lights were hugely successful. The theme
this year was “Rockin’ the Night Away”
and led to some most creative decorations!
Grand marshal Brian Griley, parade
captain Brian Metherall, and all of the
night captains, lieutenants, junior lieutenants and boat parade committee worked
so hard to give thousands an incredible
parade.
Even the rain didn’t stop the crowds
from celebrating. They watched from
balconies, decks, docks, bridges, little
beaches and everywhere they could get a
view of this amazing event.
Many of our residents entered the
decorating contest and many won beautiful trophies for their efforts. The Harbour
really came together to make our area a
twinkling winter wonderland. Thanks to
Joyce Zimmerman, Christine Faubert,
Muriel Morris, Kim Willingham, Lisa
Christiansen, Rocio Griley, Judi Ibarra,
Debbie Edwards, Karen Tribble, and so
many others for making it all happen! See
all of our award winners named in this
edition of Harbour Light Magazine.
The boat parade is a thank you to our
residents for decorating for the Cruise of
Lights. We take thousands on a magical
journey through our waterways to see
lights, lights, and more lights.
We had visitors from as far away
as China on the cruise this time. It
takes an entire year to plan the boat
parade and Cruise of Lights. Thanks to

Snegg, Ellie Matthews, Kim Weddon,

Ellie Masseling, Christine Faubert,
Mim Strickler, Jean Evans, our HHPC
juniors, and the wind beneath our wings,
Valerie Ingham. AND to hundreds
of additional HHPC volunteers that
made it happen. They worked in the office
answering phones, delivered school flyers,
delivered brochures to businesses, loaded
and unloaded buses, loaded and unloaded
boats, worked selling sweatshirts and glow
necklaces, handed out tickets, swiped
credit cards, answered questions, and did
anything and everything to ensure that it
was smooth sailing all the way.
Thanks to Sam Brust for all the work
he did sending email blasts, working
with Paypal, putting up and taking down
banners, and helping whatever way he
could. To our sponsors, The Ross Family
Foundation, and Cristi Ulrich and Scott
and Heather Campbell from Campbell

And a special thanks goes out to

Palace for all of their help and support.

HHPC: Marina Windjammer
by Ellen Halopoff
Harbour View students enjoy performing along with the Laura Stone’s Woodwinds. This is one of
Philharmonic’s many educational music programs that are funded by the Cruise of Lights.
All HHPC joined in to make the
Cruise of Lights a success. Now as our new
year begins, Marina Windjammers will be
doing what we like best. We get to enjoy the
programs we have managed to fund: We
will usher at Segerstrom for “Disneyland
Salutes the American Band” and for the
always new and entertaining educational
concerts for fifth graders featuring the
Orange County Youth Symphony and the
Anaheim Ballet. We will be introducing
third graders to the instruments of the
orchestra and allowing “hands on” when we
take the Music Mobile to local schools. On
other days we will just sit back and enjoy
programs featuring professional musicians through Philharmonic’s Meet the
Musicians and Ensembles on Tour groups.
We might be helping at Bowers Museum for
the Farley the Fiddler’s musical “California
Journey” and for sure we will be visiting
the Orange County Museum of Art for this
year’s musical interpretation of the current
art exhibition, etc! All that does not begin
to tell the whole story of what we enjoy as a
members of “Philharmonic.”
January 3rd found us at Karen and
Phil’s home for a party wrapping up the
end of the holiday season. Our monthly
meetings in members’ homes give us the
opportunity to deepen our friendships and
plan for our next activities.
During the Cruise of Lights MW
president Karen Ridout chaired “Chili
Dinner and Cruise” night and recruited
her MW members to help Islander Mary
Busche serve her delicious chili. Karen
also arranged for entertainment by Sweet
Adeline singers from the Harborlite
Chorus. Music on the docks really adds to
the festivities.
Our January Marina Windjammer
meeting was held at the clubhouse in
Rancho del Rey, thanks to hostess Pearl
Holmes. Local professional musician Gary
Halopoff, (trumpet) was our artist. Gary is a
former resident of Humboldt Island, a 1972
Marina High School graduate and Golden
Shield award winner and an example of
the importance of public schools including
music in their curriculum.
The Laguna Music Beach Festival, cosponsored by LBMF and PSOC, featured
Greg MacGillivray and others highlighting
the art of music in fi lm. An exclusively
edited version of the Academy Award
nominated IMAX Theatre fi lm “The Living
Sea,” shown as a new score commissioned
by the festival was played live. Marina
Windjammers loved being there for this
special concert.
Let us hear from you if you want to
become a part of our group. Call Susie
(714) 892-0202.
HHPC: Trinidad Group
By Mark A. Arizmendi
Boat cruises, lights, parties, I think we
are still recovering from the holidays. Trinidad Group-Sheree Novak (along
with Marlene Nielsen-Islanders) made sure
the Cruise of Lights was a success. The
Mini Boat Parade started the season by
encouraging Huntington Harbour homeowners to decorate their homes and boat
for the Boat Parade and Cruise of Lights.
The Boat Parade was a tremendous success,
we were “Rock’n the Night Away”. The
Cruise of Lights was one of the highlights
of the season, and then the Trinidad Group
celebrated our participation in the Cruise
of Lights at the beautiful waterfront home
of Sheree and Mike Novak. (I can’t wait for
next years events.) “Denim & Diamonds”, we look
forward to the Grand Marshal Celebration
Mike and Sheree Novak on their yacht “Two Bad” cruising in the Mini Boat Parade with members of the
Trinidad Group.
on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club, we will
see you there.
You can be part of the fun! We are
great friends, we have great times, and
24
we do great work, all benefiting Music
Education in Orange County Schools. Contact a member or call our Vice
President of Membership Donna Gray, she
can be reached at 714.377.6004.
HHPC: Islanders
by Eva Kilgore
What fun! Our own Brian Griley was
grand marshal for the parade this year, and
put together a spectacular parade! Night
captain Brian Metherall was right there
to help in any way he could. Wives Rocio
Griley and Michele Metherall also assisted
day by day. Magnificent!
Our president, Jenny Huntsinger, put
on a warm hat and was out there on the
waters in a small boat helping lieutenants
and boat owners to smooth sailing. Teresa
Nichols was also on hand, out in the cold
to assist. Thanks to Kim Willingham and
Lisa Christiansen for all of there help with
boat parade, and many of our additional
Islanders.
Marlene Nielsen helped lead the
Cruise of Lights team to a most successful
year. Niki Kubeck and Christine Faubert
were also exceptional...along with CORE
members.
Debbie Berry and Eva Kilgore helped
out with HHPC juniors. Many answered
phones, were lieutenants, and assisted in
nightly Cruise of Lights duties.
Islander gals and their husbands were
incredible with both the boat parade, and
the Cruise of Lights. A million thanks to
each and everyone of our dynamic group!

HHPC: Admiralty
by Bett Walton
Bett Walton (on right) congratulates Carol Webster on becoming an Admiralty member.
Admiralty members ended the year
with some memorable get-togethers as
well as work supporting the Philharmonic.
With our January meeting at Hospitality
chairman Lori Anderson’s home we discussed plans for the coming year, as well
as fun and exciting times from last year.
One exciting time we were not expecting
was the mini boat parade when we were
rescued by the Orange County Sheriffs!
Warren Lampkin generously donated his
boat with Skipper John as Captain to
sail Admiralty members in the parade.
However, Skipper John hit an unlighted
buoy while waiting in the dark water
for the parade to begin; the boat could
not continue and help was called. All the
Admiralty members had to be evacuated from the boat and back to Mim Strickler’s
to continue the party while Skipper John
had to wait for a diver to come and release
the boat from the buoy.
An elegant party was held for
members and spouses at the beautifully
decorated home of Jean Evans. It was
catered by Jerry Alonzo’s Casa Blanco
Catering and a delicious menu of Beef
Tenderloin with mushrooms and red wine
sauce, green beans almondine, baby potatoes with rosemary & garlic, Caesar salad
and topped off with their special lemon
bars was served. Another event enjoyed by
all the hard working Admiralty members
was held at Mim Strickler’s house after
“work night” for Cruise of Lights. Mim
and her assistant, Marie Edwards, served
very tasty hors d’ oeuvres, wonderful hot
soup, plentiful libations and dessert to all.

La Familia
by Lesley Herbold
A Note on Volunteering
It was December 8, and I find myself
standing in the Hilton Hotel in Costa
Mesa wearing a huge, and I mean huge
red hat, which I have littered with various
denominations of money to total $100
which is how the self created hat is named
the $100 hat. For $5.00 a chance you had
the opportunity to win the hat and all the
loot attached. While you feel just a wee bit
self conscious at first I must admit I had
a great time convincing the ladies at the
luncheon to buy a chance and take the hat.
The monies generated donated from the
sale of tickets benefiting the Orangewood
Children’s Home.
This got me to thinking about my
role in volunteering and not just mine but
to all those who do so without question
and to which a hearty thank you is so well
deserved.
My role in volunteering began quite
by accident about 2 years ago. Oh it started
easily enough, putting shopping carts back
in their proper home at the local grocery
store and allowing someone a chance to
park in a better spot and maybe just maybe
making the shopping cart collection job a
wee bit easier. This brought me to Mim
Strickler. Mim, who volunteers more than
anyone I know, caught up to me and asked
me to volunteer for Publicity Chair for
LaFamilia. What was I going to do say no
in the middle of the produce aisle? This
has graduated into working on the board
for LaCasa at the Orangewood Children’s
Home, a position I truly enjoy and am
privileged and proud to call my own.
Which brought me to the Hilton in Costa
Mesa and the wearing of the $100 hat.
For those who made this past holiday
season so special I wanted to send a special thank you. To Gerrie Izaguirre who
works tirelessly with her team to make
the Christmas Tree Wonderland event so
fabulous. To Madeline Campbell and her
team and especially to Bill Uniack who
allows us the use of his home for the distribution of the Poinsettias we all enjoyed.
To Dorothy Johnson who opened up her
home to 25 children and staff from the
Orangewood Children’s Home to enjoy
the boat parade on Sunday night. To Brian
Griley and his lovely wife Rocio and their
team of dozens and dozens of people who
volunteer their time and efforts to decorate
their boats and captain them through rain
and wind so that all of us in the harbour
and those who don’t live here but travel
great lengths to view the spectacular event
Dorothy Johnson and Santa at her waterfront
home for the boat parade.
annually I thank you. To all those who
volunteer throughout the year without all
the accolades you so deserve I thank you.
If you are interested in volunteering there are many organizations in the
harbour for you to work with. Just take a
look in this magazine for some ideas and
give them a call. Who knows, maybe that
phone call for you, like putting away the
shopping carts did for me, could start an
adventure in volunteering that you won’t
regret. Just start small, you can always
work your way up to the hat.
Best Wishes to all in 2010

Ross Family Foundation
by Eva Kilgore
Rachel Ross (r) and friend bid on an auction item
for PAWS.
Bill Ross, Pat Ross, Eva Kilgore help fill food boxes for the needy with Roosters at Second Harvest during
the holidays.
What a year! The Ross Family
Foundation, started right here in
Huntington Harbour, has truly made
a difference in the lives of many. Some
highlights include support of the PACT
Art and Wine event to raise money for
scholarships that go to deserving young
people. Visit www.pactinc.org Hats off to
Rachel Ross for all of her work on this very
worthy cause.
RFF member Heather Ross is hard
at work on the web site for RFF. Her
computer genius is much appreciated,
and her creativity boundless. Thank you
Heather!
The Rancho Coastal Humane Society
is also one of the causes RFF supports, and
is proud to be a part of. Their auction and
dinner was most fun, with lots of adorable,
adoptable pets on hand to please the crowd.
Visit www.rchumanesociety.org. Again,
Allison Andrews continues to volunteer
with this amazing group, and all RFF
members are right there in the cheering
section!
The Ross Family Foundation was
proud to be recognized at the University
of San Diego’s 2009 San Diego County
Scholarship
Showcase...to
recognize
community sponsors and donors raising
scholarship funds for local college-bound
students. RFF generously supported the
Cal-Soap (California Student Opportunity
and Access Program) for first generation,
college bound students with demonstrated
financial
need.
Excellent!
www.
californiadollarsforscholars.org Many
thanks to RFF member Allison Andrews
for all of her help.
The Olive Crest Golf Tournament
in Newport Beach was attended by
RFF members. Olive Crest is a haven
for abused children, and such a worthy
cause. Visit www.olivecrest.org for more
information. What a thrill to support our
local Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Commiteee. The RFF is a major sponsor
as the HHPC continues to raise money
for more than 250,000 students from
Kindergarten through 12th grade and
ensure their music programs continue. See
www.cruiseoflights.org . RFF members
Eva Kilgore, Paige Kilgore, and Sam Brust
helped in many aspects of the Cruise of
Lights, and at the HHPC fashion show.
On Halloween, needy students at
Harbour View Elementary School each
had a wonderful costume for their annual
parade, thanks to the ingenuity of RFF
member Pat Ross, and members of the
Huntington Harbour Kiwanis Club. RFF
gave a most generous donation to our local
Kiwanis, which ensured 14 very needy
children received clothes and toys this
28
past holiday season. Visit www.kiwanis.
org to find out more about this incredible
organization.
RFF members were also thrilled to be
able to shop for these children, and help
make their holidays happy. Ross Family
Foundation members turned out to help
pack boxes of food for very needy families
at Second Harvest www.secondharvest.
org RFF is a major sponsor of the Roosters
www.roosters.org an organization of 100
professional men right here in Orange
County that raise money for disadvantaged
children. RFF member Bill Ross was
on hand to supervise production lines,
and make sure everything ran smoothly.
Amazingly, 500 volunteers showed up
to pack 4,000 boxes of food! Recipients
got full turkeys, potatoes, canned goods,
snacks, and even toys for the children! Only
15 years ago, there were 100 boxes of food
packed- this organization has grown by
leaps and bounds.
What is new for 2010? The Ross
Family Foundation continues to grow, and
support our community. Look for a major
fundraiser in the next issue of Harbour
Light. If you would like to know more
about the Ross Family Foundation, please
visit www.rossfamilyfoundation.org or call
the RFF offices at 714-840-6113.
