Pope Saint John XXIII Award Winner
Jim O’Connor
The 2016 recipient of the Pope Saint
John XXIII Award is Jim O’Connor of
La Canada, CA. Jim is being recognized
for his over 22 years of volunteering at
Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. Jim has
comforted many patients and has donated
more than 75 gallons of blood and platelets
during his years of volunteer service.
Father Tony Marti, OSM, President of
Saint Francis High School, where Jim
teaches Algebra and Calculus, writes,
“Jim is a Vietnam Veteran who exemplifies Franciscan ideals by teaching young
minds values such as compassion, humil-
He does it with a great heart. By his work
with children, Jim demonstrates that it is
our moral duty to care for these children
and to advocate for their rights.”
ity, service and goodness at school, while
previously unknown to his students, giving
blood and helping hold babies as a temporary father/grandfather to children in need
of one. Jim has never married and has been
giving blood and holding babies for more
than 20 years. He is the top blood donor
at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles and
has been recognized by various organizations for his service including the 2015
Cardinal’s Award.”
Wendy Kellaris, Manager, Volunteer Resources at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, states, “In his role as a TLC volunteer,
Jim makes rounds on the patient units and
holds and comforts the little ones who need
that extra attention. He truly found his
calling as a TLC volunteer. You will never
see him that he isn’t quietly comforting a
fussy infant, a fidgety toddler, a frightened
preschooler . . . it doesn’t matter what the
age is, he is their Pied Piper.”
Father Marti also writes, “Jim has shown
that the virtue of love, especially towards
those who are defenseless, is a responsibility that each person is called to fulfill.
The Italian Catholic Federation congratulates Jim O’Connor on being named the
recipient of the 2016 Pope Saint John
XXIII Award.
Grand President’s Award:
Cecelia McGhee
Young Adult Leadership Award:
Paul S. Cook
We are taught as
Paul S. Cook joined Branch 13 Martinez,
Catholics that God
has given each one of us certain gifts and
talents that we are charged to put to work
and return in Him in Love. Cecelia McGhee is a person who has been given many
extraordinory talents and shares them generously as she fulfills her responibility to
give back in every measure.
Cecilia McGee, the 2016 Grand Presidents
Award winner, is the kind of member
that every branch would love to have as
a member. She joined Branch 48 of the
Italian Catholic Federation in Modesto in
1987. Upon her initiation she became involved in every aspect of the branch and
established new programs. She held the
offices of branch president and secretary
as well as president and secretary of the
Stockton District. During that time, she
also chaired all the branch and district
events. She chaired the District Picnic,
Bishops’ Days and St. Joseph Day celebrations. And she is still doing this work at
the age of 82! She is such a force in her
branch it is impossibles not to know her.
She says her faith is her life and spreads
that faith to all who know her.
In addition to branch and district events,
she is involved in community and church
events.

of the Contra Costa District on November
28, 1999. Spending the majority of his life
as a member of our organization, many
of his childhood memories involve participating in the ICF with his parents and
sister. Paul was always present and could
be spotted at meetings, events, masses,
fundraisers and conventions. Growing up
with the ICF prepared him to become his
branch’s Children’s Apostolate Facilitator,
a Branch Officer, and an inspiration to the
youth that now follow in his footsteps.
Branch Member, Mary Lynn Rogers
shares, “We joined the Italian Catholic
Federation once we learned that Paul was
the Apostolate Facilitator of Branch 13
working with the younger members of the
Federation.” She continues, “Paul donates
countless hours to the fundraising efforts
of the ICF and his leadership and orga-
nizational skills have been invaluable to
the branch. The dedication Paul displays
has set my son in the same direction. I am
grateful for this.”
Rosemary Cook, Paul’s sister, testifies that
Paul enjoys work, especially when it benefits others. Some of his service includes:
distributing food to the needy with the

Saint Teresa of Calcutta Award: Family of the Year Award:
Rev. Monsignor Craig Harrison The Shimshock Family
T he
Mother Teresa told us that, “God still
loves the world and He sends you and me
to be His love and His compassion to the
poor.”
Reverend Monsignor Craig Harrison, the
pastor of St. Francis Parish in Bakersfield,
California, was nominated for the Saint Teresa of Calcutta award because he has taken
Mother Teresa’s words to heart. Throughout his entire priesthood, Monsignor Craig
has ministered to every facet of the Church,
giving special attention to youth, the poor,
the homeless, and bereaved individuals
and families.
“Father Craig,” as he is affectionately
known by many, has touched a multitude of
hearts with his profound love and care for
others. His outgoing personality and ready
humor quickly endear him to others, but it
is the depth of his compassion that reveals
the way he lives his commitment to God
and to the community.
Father Craig’s example and guidance have
engendered the same kind of caring in his
parishioners. They are quick to open their
hearts to others, as is evidenced by the role St.
Francis Parish plays in offering loving support
to those in need in the Bakersfield area.

Family: Ric, Sue,
Erik, Kate and
Stephen, members of
Resurrection Branch
408 in Sunnyvale,
are a family that
embraces their faith
and they serve as
role models for the
community they
serve. Ric is a leader,
who is all about
taking action. In his
quiet way, he sets a
unique example of charisma, vision and
character traits that attract people to follow
him. He has been president for 10 years of
Branch 408, Resurrection Parish. Ric is also
Second Vice President of the Santa Clara
Valley District. Ric and his family have
donated time and effort to many ICF events.
His family spearheads the Pasta Dinners
at Resurrection, selling tickets, cooking,
tending bar and creating raffle baskets. Ric
is the contact for Stanford Blood Bank and

She sings in the choir and is often the cantor. She prepares a monthly meal for 100
people.
She saw a need for transporting the elderly
for doctor visits and she worked with the
Modesto Bee and City of Modesto to work
on a plan and helped raise $100.00. Says
Cecilia, “I’ve seen too many people who
stay in the shadows and need help.”
She says raising her children is her biggest
achievent. She did this as a single mother.
She attended all of her children activities
which were many, while all the time chairing events and helping others. Often working at night to care for her family.
Former long time Director of Stewardship at Stanislaus Catholic Community of
Modesto, Thomas Byrne says, “She is a
woman of faith, she loves her church, her
community and is caring and compassionate and inspires people with her energy.”
“I can attest to years of observing, and
admiring, her good works in God’s name.
Cecelia has a knack for organizing and
encouraging involvement by others and
one of her most endearing qualties is her
concern for others. She has received many
awards, locally and statewide for her generosity of time and talent.
To quote her eldest son, “It is not by accident that our family gathers together, it
is not an accident that we visit and talk to
each other and help each other when we
are in need, it is not an accident that we
support each other, it is because our Mom
has always stressed throughout our lives
how important life is and should be.”

To quote Father Leger, Pastor of
Resurrection Church, “Ric is one person
who we can count on for anything. He is
dedicated and dependable and is always
giving to the community… Behind every
successful man is a family ready to help.
His wife, Sue and Eric, Kate and Stephen
are very supportive in our ministries.”

and Raffles they help raise money for their
branch and parish. The funds raised during
the many events they spearhead, benefit
Resurrection Schools’ two service awards,
ICF scholarships and various charities
throughout the community.
Ric is a leader, with a high level of
confidence. His leadership is about taking
actions to create a positive outcome. He is
a soft-spoken man who puts extra effort
into everything he does. Ric and his family
are very generous with their time; taking
members to baseball games, and many ICF
Monsignor Milani Diocesan Director said,
“Ric and his family are very dedicated to
the Church, they give much attention and
time to the work of the Lord…He is an
extremely kind and devoted individual…
His commitment and strong Christian faith
is an example for many.”

to present the 2016 Family of the Year

Society of St. Vincent de Paul, co-leading children each year at Vacation Bible
School, feeding the homeless at Dorothy’s
Place in Salinas, and traveling to Mexico
on multiple occasions to help build homes
for poor families. Recently, Paul was invited and sponsored by the Bishop of Oakland, Michael C. Barber, SJ, to lead and
accompany seven high school senior boys
on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. These
young men, donning the uniforms of the
Knights of Malta of the Los Angeles Province, assisted sick and dying individuals
making the journey to the healing waters
of the grotto. They physically lifted men
and women, pushed their wheelchairs on
and off the trains and helped submerge
individuals into the natural pools at the
Lourdes shrine. Paul turned down a pres-

In addition to setting an example of loving service, Father Craig realizes the
significance that education has in forming
disciples for Christ. His monthly seminars
for both men and women have touched the
hearts and strengthened the Faith of thousands. In true Mother Teresa fashion, Father
Craig has welcomed members of all faiths
tigious job at St. Mary’s College to be
part of this mission. Rosemary said, “My
brother definitely lives his life in service
to others, just as God has asked of us, and
leads others by his example.”
Paul’s accomplishments as a student, active
parishioner, an Eagle Scout and a devoted
ICF member, makes him an inspiration for
future generations of members growing up
in our organization. As a child, Paul would
wear a badge to conventions that read,
“Future Officer of the Italian Catholic Federation.” Paul eventually became an officer and has now served five terms between
the offices of Orator and Sentinel. There is
no doubt that Paul will continue his ICF
journey as one of our leaders. This year,
Paul will not be wearing his special childhood convention badge. Instead, he will be
wearing the title of our 2016 Young Adult
Leadership Award recipient.
to his seminars where, with wit and humor,
he brings others closer to Christ.
Father Craig’s love for others is especially
evident in his ministry to those suffering
from illness and the loss of loved ones.
The losses he has suffered, including the
deaths of his mother, father, and sister,
opened his heart in a very profound way to
the pain suffered by others. He certainly
is, as Mother Teresa said, Jesus’ love and
compassion to others.
Consider nominating a worthy member
of your branch or community for the
2017 Convention Awards.
