Westview Students Celebrate Arbor Day
The City of Wood Dale and Westview School partnered this year
to celebrate Arbor Day by participating in the Fourth Grade
Foresters program. The City sponsored this year’s effort to send
every fourth grader home with a tree of their own to plant and
care for. The trees are Norway Spruces, which were specially
selected to thrive in our climate. The nationwide Fourth Grade
Foresters program was designed to revitalize observation
of Arbor Day in schools, and each tree was individually
packaged for distribution by workers with disabilities. As a
longstanding participant in the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree
City USA program, the City of Wood Dale is committed to
showing visitors and residents that trees, conservation and the
environment are an important part of life in our community.

In-Pipe Grand Opening–“Because Efficiency Counts”
State and local officials joined with In-Pipe
Technology on May 22nd as In-Pipe officially
opened a new manufacturing facility,
laboratory and headquarters in Wood Dale
at 725 N. Central Avenue.
In-Pipe is an exciting technological innovator that
deals with wastewater treatment. The company,
which recently relocated from Wheaton, uses green
technology to optimize wastewater infrastructure,
resulting in operating efficiencies, enhanced water
quality, and cost savings. In-Pipe uses natural,
biological methods that work with an existing
treatment plant’s own processes, allowing it to
offer sustainable solutions − environmentally and
economically. For more information on In-Pipe,
visit their website at http://www.in-pipe.com.
Mayor Nunzio Pulice, In-Pipe Technology President and
CEO John Williams, and Dan Seals, Assistant Director of the
Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity,
celebrate the opening of the new company headquarters.

SOMEONE
You Should Know...
Each issue of the City newsletter will spotlight someone who
“goes above and beyond” to make a difference in the lives of others.
This issue spotlights JOE BUTTICE
Joe Buttice was born in Chicago
on New Year’s Day, 1924. He has
3 sisters and 2 brothers and lived
in the Bridgeport area (Little
Sicily) until he married in 1947.
Joe volunteers at the Tioga VFW
never ending energy can be seen
at Tuesday night bingo, helping
with day-to-day Post activities
and organizing the Memorial
Day Parade. He is most proud of
his involvement with planning
the beautiful memorial that
is now Veteran’s Park on
Irving Park Rd. He was on the
committee that designed the
memorial along with Mr. Jim
Mixon from VFW Post 2149.
Volunteering is Joe’s way of
giving back to the community.
Joe entered the service
in 1943. After basic
training, he joined the
6th infantry Division,
20th infantry, 3rd
Battalion, L Company
in California. His first
battle was Maffin Bay,
Lone Tree Hill, then
he shipped to the
Phillippines to liberate
Luzon. He ended his tour in
Korea. Joe earned several awards
during his years of service; The
Combat Infantry Badge, Victory
Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater
Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle
Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead,
Philippine Liberation Ribbon
with 1 Bronze Battle Star, 4
Overseas Service Bars and the
Good Conduct Medal.
He was married to Lorraine
in 1947 and was blessed with
two daughters. He has three
grandchildren. His dear wife
passed away in 2005.
When asked what he likes best
about Wood Dale, Joe says,
“Wood Dale is my kind of town.
A great place to raise your kids.
There are good schools, churches,
shopping and more. The Police
and Fire Department are the
greatest–believe me! There is a
strong sense of community here.
People care about each other.”
City of Wood Dale • 630-766-4900 • www.wooddale.com
Joe is most well
known around town
for his organizing of
the Memorial Day
Parade. He started his
work with the parade
approximately 19 years
ago. Two years in
Bensenville and then
it continued when the
Post moved to Wood
Dale. The VFW Post recognized
the need in the community to
honor the servicemen and women
and celebrate the freedom earned
by their sacrifices. Joe states,
“It takes work and dedication
from local government, city
services and volunteers to make
it a success.” There is always a
memorial service following the
parade, to remember the true
meaning of the day.
Joe says it all when he states,
“I am proud to call Wood Dale
my home.” And we’re glad you’re
here Joe. Thank you for all your
hard work and effort to make our
home, our community, a better
place to live.
If you know of someone you feel
should be highlighted in a future
issue, please send your suggestions to
Amanda Melone at the City of Wood

Community News
The City Council and I want to take some time to recognize our great
city and honor the hard work and selfless dedication of the volunteers
who make the City of Wood Dale a better place to live and work.
Residents in Wood Dale want to give back. And as they do, they are
making our community stronger.
The City of Wood Dale encourages an environment in which volunteers can
flourish , promotes community organizations, and encourages volunteerism.
City government could not function without volunteers who serve on our
boards and committees.
Everyday, volunteers help shape the policies that keep our City moving forward in the right
direction and their impact can be felt throughout the community.
Volunteers are motivated by the simple satisfaction of helping their fellow citizens and making their
community a better place to live.
Once again, the City of Wood Dale thanks its volunteers for their hardwork and dedication.

Wood Dale Fire District
Chief Thomas Flanagan Retires
Fire Chief Thomas Flanagan retired May 3, 2012 after 30 years of service with the
Wood Dale Fire Protection District.
Thomas was hired as a Firefighter-Paramedic in August 1983. He was appointed
Fire Chief in 2005. Thomas grew up in the Fire Department and spent the
majority of his life working with and for the residents of Wood Dale. In his
retirement announcement Chief Flanagan said, “I have had a wonderful career
serving the community of Wood Dale. I feel blessed to have had this incredible
career in a position where I feel I have been able to contribute.”
He is looking forward to traveling and spending time with his family.
Fireworks Safety
•T
he grill should be placed well away from
the home, deck railings and from under
the eaves and over-hanging branches.
• Keep children and pets away from the
grill area.
• Keep grills clean by removing grease
or fat buildup from the trays below.
• Never leave your grill unattended.
Charcoal Grills
Leave fireworks to the professionals.
Do not use consumer fireworks.
Consumer fireworks include sparklers
and fire crackers. The tip of a sparkler
burns at a temperature more than
1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot
enough to cause third-degree burns.
The safest way to enjoy fireworks is
to attend a public display conducted
by trained professionals. After the
firework display, children should never
pick up fireworks that may be left over,
they may still be active.
Grilling Safety
There’s nothing like outdoor grilling.
It’s one of summer’s outdoor activities.
But, a grill used to close to anything
that can burn is a fire hazard. They can
be very hot, causing injuries. Follow
these safety tips and you’ll have a safe
grilling summer.
Safety Tips:
• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills
should be used only outdoors.
There are several ways to get the
charcoal ready to use. Charcoal
chimney starters allow you to start the
charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
If you use a starter fluid, use only
charcoal starter fluid. Never add
charcoal fluid or any other flammable
liquids to the fire.
Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of
children and away from heat sources.
There are also electric charcoal starters,
which do not use fire. Be sure to use an
extension cord for outdoor use.
When you are finished grilling, let the
coals completely cool before disposing
in a metal container.
Propane Grills
Check the gas tank hose for leaks
before using it for the first time each
year. Apply a light soap and water
solution to the hose. A propane leak
will release bubbles. If your grill has a
gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble
test, and there is no flame, turn off the
gas tank and grill. If the leak stops,
get the grill serviced by a professional
before using it again. If the leak does
not stop, call the fire department.
If you smell gas while cooking,
immediately get away from the grill
and call the fire department.
Do not move the grill.

Tea Time!
Once or twice each
month Tea Time is
held at ECEC with
Ms. Tadel. This
is a very special
event for our
pre-kindergarten
children. A group
of 8 children are
invited to come
into Mrs. Tadel’s
office where they
gather to discuss what Tea Time is all about. They talk about how this is
a special time in many countries where people sit down and have special
foods and conversation. The table is set with a tablecloth and each place
has tiny china ladybug cups, saucers and plates with cloth napkins at each
child’s place. There are always fresh flowers on the table and all foods
that are served are in small pieces. The excitement that is shown by the
children is such a privilege to observe and memorable for all. After children
are shown how to use the napkins (they rest on the lap and are used to pat
crumbs from the mouth) and the teatime guidelines are reviewed (i.e.: We
don’t reach across a table to get food; we ask our friend to pass it.) then, the
children proceed to the table. The first thing that is asked by the children is
“Is it REAL tea?” Yes, of course it is real tea in teapots scattered about the
table (with sugar in it). The excitement of pouring the tea by themselves
(spills are allowed, of course), choosing what tea foods they would like to
eat, using their manners and holding a conversation that includes others is
very special for all the children.

Collaboration for Learning
When thinking about our vision for our school,
“collaboration” characterizes one of the strengths of our
staff. Teachers work together to plan, problem solve and
reflect on their teaching and students’ work to meet the
needs of the diverse population of children we serve.
Our specialists are a vital part of our team of teachers
who support children within classrooms or work with
individual or small groups of students. They are our
early interventionists, bilingual/ ESL teachers, special
education staff, and school wide enrichment consultants.
Our specialists communicate with classroom teachers
regularly and offer suggestions and support in their
area of expertise. They coordinate their lessons and
planning to reinforce or extend the teaching and
learning that occurs in our classrooms. For example,
kindergartners (pictured) are learning about living
things such as plants and animals in the classroom.

Principal: Mr. Al Buttimer
On April 16th, Westview students
were able to get hands-on
with some exciting “STEM”
activities—Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math. Using
real life application and exciting
visual displays all students were
given nearly an hour to explore
25 fantastic activities provided by
the Northern Illinois University
STEM outreach program. This
program supplies different stations
and a faculty member to help
assist in teaching the students
various STEM related concepts.
Each station was hands-on and
After reading a book about living and non-living things,
the Early Intervention teacher took students on a walk
to identify and label what was “alive” and what was
“not alive”. Students also had to explain how they knew
the difference. With a Bilingual Teacher, 2nd grade
students are comparing/contrasting vocabulary used to
describe force and motion in their two languages. They
put their words into song and action to further reinforce
their learning.
Through collaboration, our students have consistency
and continuity in their learning and our teachers in their
instruction. Like our students, we learn from each other in
order to provide the best instruction to move students forward.
the students and teachers were
enthusiastic throughout. We were
assisted by volunteer helpers
from around the Wood Dale
Community. Fenton High School
supplied volunteers from their
very own STEM program to run
the different activities. We also had
volunteers from the Wood Dale
Senior’s Club. It was a wonderful
opportunity to have senior citizens
interact with the 3rd-5th graders.
A few of the most popular activities
were the Tesla coil to demonstrate
electricity transfer and the Van de
Graaff generator which generates
enough static electricity to make
some of the children’s hair stand
straight up! Westview School
received two grants to be used for
science and math education from
our local Mobil stations in order
to cover the costs of the event.
Thank you to Wood Dale Mobil

Junior High

Grades 6th-8th
Principal: Mr. René Santiago
This Spring our Panthers at Wood
Dale Junior High participated in an
awareness session about “Stranger
Danger.” As summer approaches, it
is important to share some tips for
students at our school and others
in the community. Today, “stranger
danger” comes in many forms.
Strangers are able to communicate
with our children through social
media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
It is important that our students
be able to use social media to
communicate because they will
need to know these technological
skills in the real-world. It is also
important to teach our students
how to be safe when they encounter
others through these mediums.
When students do not know who is
trying to communicate with them,
they need to avoid communicating
with that person and report this

to their parents immediately.
Parents should be aware of what
their children are doing at all
times as well. Shared computer
passwords are the key to safe
internet interactions for our kids.
When students are outside of the
home, they need to know some key
tips for being safe. Students should
always tell their parents where they

Latino Parent Leadership Academy
This year District 7 offered a Leadership Academy
specifically designed for Latino Parents. The
Leadership Academy consisted of five - ninety
minute sessions that were taught by parenting
and family expert, Dr. Lourdes Ferrer. The entire
Leadership Academy was based on the 10 Parenting
Competencies outlined in Dr. Ferrer’s book,
In the Driver’s Seat. The 10 Competencies are:
1. Value your child’s education
2. Meet your child’s basic needs
3. Overcome immigrant challenges
4. Maintain family unity
5. Understand your role as a parent
6. Believe in your children
7. Connect with your child’s teacher
8. Make reading a lifestyle
9. Make Homework a routine
10.Build your child’s character
On, May 8th a graduation ceremony was held for
the 37 parents who successfully completed the
academy. Board of Education President Christine
Caliendo and Mayor Pulice were both on stage
to congratulate the parents. Illinois Commerce
Commissioner and former IL State Senator,
Miguel Del Valle was the keynote speaker for the
event. A big fiesta, complete with a Mariachi singer,
was held following the ceremony.
The Leadership Academy was sponsored by Padres
Unidos de Wood Dale, which is a new parent
organization started at District 7 earlier this year.
Padres Unidos de Wood Dale has been formed
to support Latino families, who have students
attending District 7 schools. The mission of Padres
Unidos is to create engaged and vibrant families
dedicated to helping improve the educational
achievement and progress of our parents, our
children, and our community. If you would like
