Steve Lewis
Chair of the Board
Welcome to Apache Junction, the door-step
to the Superstition Mountains, surrounding
communities, and fun and adventure. Our
area has been welcoming visitors for several
thousand years. Many made their home here
and many more moved with the weather
patterns that affect the Superstition Mountain
area. I know that the lure of the weather,
bountiful wildlife, beauty and more recently
(last 200 years) gold, has been appreciated
and admired by so many. Today, Apache
Junction has been rediscovered for the
tremendous riches it has to offer, with
something for everyone. Apache Junction
makes the perfect base camp and is now the
destination for visitors from even the far
reaches of the globe.
Your epicenter for information for the many local opportunities and area
information is the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce and Visitors
Center. You will find area maps, brochures on many exciting things to
do, local events and business partners that are here to serve your every
need. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff of local volunteers will
provide a myriad of information for your interests and needs while
visiting our wonderful area. You will want to note the dates of our
exciting community events such as “Lost Dutchman Days”, the “Festival
of the Superstitions”, and incorporate those into your stay with us.
You will have to look far and wide to find an area as rich in history,
folklore and cultural diversity as Apache Junction, Goldfield and the
Superstition Mountains. Native inhabitants thousands of years ago, the
Cliff Dwelling Salado Culture, Spaniards, Mountain Men, Western
Pioneers, Miners, Farmers, Entrepreneurs and adventurers transformed a
wilderness into today’s rich history, enjoyed by residents and visitors
alike. Tourism probably first started with the building of the road to the
Roosevelt Dam, finished in 1911. Along the way Apache Junction was a
rest stop for the Apache Trail Stage Lines scenic tours in the 1920’s and
30’s. Movies produced at Apacheland Movie Studio had some of most
famous actors and were seen around the world. Immerse yourself in our
history at the Superstition Mountain Museum and the Goldfield Ghost
Town as you imagine yourself in the Old West.
Apache Junction has all the outdoor activities you can imagine. With
blue skies, perfect weather and the beautiful Sonoran Desert as a
backdrop, you can enjoy desert tours, horseback rides in the foothills, lake
activities, famous hiking trails, camping, and great golf courses and
resorts, to name a few. Don’t miss a picnic, camping or great hiking at the
lost Dutchman State Park at the base of the Superstitions. Check out the
interesting shops in the area and don’t miss the chance to sample our
interesting and diverse eateries. The sky is literally the limit to what you
can see and enjoy in our great outdoors.
We want to share our community and its past and present treasures with
you. I hope you enjoy your time with us and take home memorable
experiences. Whether you are with us for a few days or months, please
let us know how we can help you make the most of your visit to Apache
Junction.
Warmly,
Steve Lewis
Chair of the Board

About the Chamber
It doesn’t get any better than this. In the shadow of the
majestic Superstition Mountains, the Apache Junction
Chamber of Commerce represents a diverse group of
businesses located in a varied geographic region extending
east of the metropolitan Phoenix area in Pinal County.
Celebrating 50+ years in operation, the Chamber offers
benefits and advocacy for over 400 Chamber members.
Serving the areas surrounding Apache Junction, the
Chamber facility also houses the Apache Junction Visitor
Center. This Arizona Office of Tourism designated visitor
center accommodates over 30,000 visitors annually while
receiving thousands of phone calls and distributing
information for relocation and tourism throughout the
world.
In the early 1960s, a flourishing business community was
forming along the Apache Trail. In June 1960, the Apache
Junction Chamber of Commerce incorporated for the
purpose of “fostering and promoting social, economic,
commercial, industrial, agricultural and civic interests of
the area of Apache Junction, Pinal County, Arizona, and
its trade area.” As with most chambers of commerce,
business leaders felt the need for representation as a
business community, and for a group to promote the thenunincorporated community of Apache Junction.
The Apache Junction Chamber is focused on giving the
business community the opportunity to affordably
advertise and network while advocating for business on a
local, state, and federal level. The EVCCA (East Valley
Chamber of Commerce Alliance) represents more than
7,500 member firms from the Ahwatukee Foothills,
Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek,
Scottsdale and Tempe Chambers of Commerce. Its
purpose is to provide coordination and to advance the
common business interests in the East Valley.
Today, the Apache Junction Chamber partners with
federal, state and local entities, community organizations,
and the business community to create an environment that
is attractive to positive economic growth and
opportunities. With the support of our members, the
Chamber will continue to represent their interests,
develop programs that give value to their membership,
and give members the needed support that allows them to
grow and prosper.
We would like to thank our current members for their
support. If you are a non member, please consider joining.
We are committed to making Apache Junction a great
place to live, work and prosper.

A Brief History of Apache Junction
I
n the 1880’s two important events happened. The
Apache chief Geronimo surrendered to the U.S.
Army and gold was discovered. A boom town called
Goldfield was established; within five years however, the
picture had changed. The gold was played out and the
town deserted.
Early in the 1900’s the Mesa-Roosevelt Road (later named
the Apache Trail) was constructed, followed by a large
dam on the Salt River. With the Roosevelt dam in place,
water and power were accessible and growth began in
earnest in the valley below. With that, Arizona’s first
governor, George P. Hunt, planned a road that would run
between Phoenix and Globe and the new highway
opened in 1922.
George Cleveland Curtiss, a traveling salesman from
Utah, also arrived in 1922. He set up a tent and started
selling water and sandwiches to people traveling the dusty
roads. Curtiss realized his good fortune to be so well
positioned. He filed a homestead claim and poured the
foundation for a building that would become the Apache
Junction Inn.
When tourists began to winter in the area because of
wonderful dry air, mild temperatures and beautiful
scenery, his dreams began to come true. In 1945 he sold
his thriving business to Jack Anderson, whom most
consider to be the founding father of AJ.
In 1959 construction was begun on a movie set to
promote the area to the film industry. With its
breathtaking backdrop of the Superstition Mountains,
Apacheland Movie Ranch became a popular location for
western movies and the stars who enjoyed filming there.
Apache Junction became an incorporated city in
November 1978. Since then it has grown, from a small
town with a fascinating history to a city with an exciting
plan for its future

Apache Junction is a suburban community at the eastern
edge of metropolitan Phoenix. We have the metro area’s
advantage of direct freeway access to entertainment,
cultural activities and work sites.
The Apache Junction Unified School District is one of our
area’s greatest assets boasting a high school, one middle
school and four elementary schools. All have aggressive
education programs to maintain scholastic excellence for the
community’s nearly 5,000 students. There
are Charter schools as an alternative to
public education. Centeral Arizona
College’s local campus offers vocational
credit classes, GED preparation,
continuing education courses, and a
career counseling center.
We are home to about 35,000
residents and host to about 40,000
winter visitors each year. Our
residents value diversity and the
slower paced lifestyle. Outdoor
enthusiasts will appreciate the many
activities in and around here. In
addition to the Superstition
Wilderness and Tonto National Forest,
we have 1,600 acres of multi-use park
and ball fields, tennis and racquetball
courts.
Medical and emergency service in the
area include: Arizona Regional Medical
Center, Banner Baywood Medical Center,
Banner Health Hospital, Mountain Vista
Medical Center, a 911 system, ambulance service, emergency
helicopter transport, wellness clinics and private practitioners
in the medical, dental, chiropractic and veterinary services.
Available housing ranges from well manicured retirement
parks and subdivisions with organized activities to single
family homes on a wide variety of lot sizes. Home prices vary
from modest to very expensive.

ARTS, CULTURE AND MORE
TOGETHER AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME
February, 15, 2013
CHARLES LINDBERGH: THE LONE EAGLE Friday, March 8, 2013
This two person show offers music
from Broadway and beyond and
features Broadway stars, Jeri Sager
and Franc D’Ambrosio. Jeri Sager
is a veteran of Broadway and
numerous national tours. She is best
known for her portrayal of
"Grizabella" in "CATS", Andrew
Lloyd Webber's Tony Award
winning musical. Jeri has enjoyed
critical acclaim for her portrayal of
"Fantine" in LES MISERABLES
and "Eva Peron" in EVITA. Franc
D'Ambrosio is best known for his
impressive portrayal of the
"Phantom" in
Andrew Lloyd
Webber's Tony Award winning
Musical, The Phantom Of The
Opera, and for his role as Anthony
Corleone, the opera singing son of
Al Pacino and Diane Keaton in
Coppola's seven time Academy Award nominated film
Godfather III.
This one man show by
Steve Carroll offers new
insight into the life of
Charles Lindbergh. "The
Lone Eagle" was just one of
many nicknames given to
Charles Lindbergh by the
press after he became the
first pilot to fly nonstop from
New York to Paris in May of
1927. The play is a searing
character study of a man
driven by his indomitable
will and ambition, who
unwillingly became the
media's first 'superstar'. He
suffered terribly for it, losing
his privacy, a normal family life, and his firstborn son."
Steve Carroll was an original member of The Meat and Potatoes
Company in New York, where he appeared in a wide variety of
productions. Mr. Carroll was invited to China, where he portrayed
a leading role in a 30 part series for Chinese television called A War
of China's Fate. It examined China's post-World War II civil war.
CLARINET AND ALL THAT JAZZ - Richard Stoltzman, Clarinetist and
Peter John Stoltzman, Pianist
Friday, April 5, 2013
Richard Stoltzman, a two-time Grammy Award winner defies categorization and dazzled critics
and audiences with his masterful performances in all genres of music. He worked as a soloist
with more than a hundred orchestras, as a recitalist and chamber music performer, as an
innovative jazz artist, and as an RCA recording artist. Peter John Stoltzman has been called "a
monster jazz piano player" by the late Jack Elliot, Werner calls Peter's music "sweet and
sophisticated. Top shelf!"
Father and son have delighted audiences at Jazz Festivals, concert halls, on a live broadcast for
the CBC, and as the subject of features on “CBS Sunday Morning”, NPR’s “Performance Today”
and “Weekend Edition” shows as well as on the Voice of America network.

We are the gateway to outdoor adventure, the Superstition Mountains and the famous Apache Trail. Our
community is rich in history, activities, and a fantastic quality of life.
Apache Junction
Apache Junction is a desert community nestled in the
shadows of the Superstition Mountains, 1,750 feet above
sea level and 35 miles directly east of Phoenix on
Highway 60 (Superstition Freeway). It is the eastern most
community in the Phoenix-Mesa metropolitan area. The
city currently encompasses 36.5 square miles with a yearround population estimated at 35,000. Each year the city
welcomes over 40,000 seasonal residents, increasing the
population from mid-October to mid-April to over 75,000.
With its mining and transportation roots in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries, Apache Junction did not develop
a central downtown but spread slowly along the Apache
Trail. The city is actively working to develop the area as a
21st century centerpiece for combined retail, office and
downtown residential living – all consistent with Apache
Junction’s southwestern, territorial feel. Despite its rapid
growth, Apache Junction remains a city of wide open
spaces and a gateway to natural splendor.
A total of 8,561 people work in the City of Apache Junction and provide a captive consumer segment for retailers in the area. Estimated
spending of these workers alone is over $17.1 million per year in the
City*. * $8 per day / 5 days per week / 50 weeks per year

AREA DEMOGRAPHICS & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Economic Development Strategic Plan Update
& Evolution From EDAPT to ‘3D-ED’:
Recognizing the overall economic conditions and resource
constraints we have endured over these past several years
we have evolved our plan – still founded on the hard work,
findings and recommendations of EDAPT - and distilled it
down to its very essence:
Apache Junction Plan for Economic Development is
“3D-ED”: 1) Diversification, 2) Downtown, 3) Destination:
Tourism Award recipient – Superstition Harley-Davidson!
Additionally, on the “up-side” our results ARE 3dimensional; 3-story Mountain Health & Wellness facility,
Central Arizona College construction, downtown street &
landscaping improvements, etc.
Recognizing that we cannot beat the competition in a
‘bidding war’ for expansion or re-location prospects, our
approach is to win them over with Service, Responsiveness
and Sincerity (“SRS tactical approach”) as we communicate
the “we want you here in Apache Junction” message.
For more in-depth information on EDAPT go to:
www.ajcity.net/edapt. And for more on Downtown AJ go to:
www.downtownaj.com and www.ajcity.net/downtownflyer
1) Diversification – systematic efforts are underway to
broaden our base, and strengthen our
year ‘round employment, through
growth of manufacturing and a variety
of “targeted industries.” Empire heavy
equipment is a notable success. Our
Greater Phoenix Economic Council
membership increases exposure to a
variety of leads, AND enhances our
city’s profile. We continue to work on
securing funding for a Business Park
feasibility study, and are working

Apache Junction’s trade leakage totaled $264.1 million in 2011, which
represents 66% of unmet demand escaping the current market. The table
below shows a detailed trade leakage breakdown for select retail
categories for the calendar year 2011.
The greatest opportunities for retail in Apache Junction are within restaurants, alcoholic
beverages, household furniture, footwear, clothing and accessories, computers and electronics,
pets and toys, and books. The leakage from these 8 retail segments combined represent $125
million in unfulfilled retail demand, almost half of the $264.1 million total.

Principal Economic Activities
Employment figures for Apache Junction do not truly
represent its economic activity; proximity to metropolitan
Phoenix gives a far more realistic indication of the area’s
economic base. Apache Junction’s economy is based almost
exclusively on recreation and retirement. Most commercial
services in the area cater to tourists and recreation seekers
on their way to Arizona’s central lakes. mountains and
forests. Extensive developments and accommodations
serve many retired persons and winter visitors.

RECREATION
The Superstition Mountain Museum collects,
preserves and displays the artifacts, history and folklore of
the Superstition Mountains, Apache Junction and the
surrounding region.
The 12 acre Museum site offers untold photo
opportunities with it's reproductions of 19th Century
businesses including a Wells Fargo office, stage coach stop,
barber shop, assay office and other displays of authentic
relics of the 1800's. Well marked nature walks crisscross
the areas surrounding the museum buildings, all located at
the base of the West Wall of the beautiful Superstition
Mountain.....a one of a kind location.
Hours are 9 am to 4 pm daily, seven days a week except
Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Perhaps nowhere in the entire United States is there an
area full of legend, history and intrigue as the rugged
160,000 acre Superstition Mountain range in Central
Arizona. Archeological evidence indicates that people
were here some
9000 years ago.
Later inhabitants
included the
Salado, Hohokam
and Apache
Indians, followed
by Spanish
explorers and
Mexican Gold Miners. Early American trappers and
adventurers migrated to the area and were soon followed
by cattlemen and farmers. Eventually, the U.S. Cavalry
was sent in to establish forts to protect this rapidly
growing population.
As modern times approached, men and women began
searching for what they believed was the richest gold
mine in the world. This mine was made famous by Jacob
Waltz, known as "the Dutchman", who took the secret of
"his mine" to the grave in 1891.
Even today, treasure hunters scour the mountains
searching for the Lost Dutchman Mine, but now they
share the region with campers, hikers, horseback riders
and conservationists in what has officially become the
Superstition Wilderness Area.
Golf
With 320 days of sunshine you can enjoy the outdoors
year-round. With over a dozen golf courses to choose
from in the area, visitors can play golf at not one, but
two of the top-five-rated public courses in Arizona.
Gold Canyon, Superstition Mountain, and the City of
Apache Junction are home to some of Arizona’s
premier golf courses. The area recently became home
to the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club.

A
s you approach the Apache Junction area, it is
evident that you are at the trailhead to a spectacular
adventure.
The historic Apache Trail, Highway 88, is the entrance to the
legendary Superstition Mountains. Lost treasures, hidden
gold, and explorers such as the Spaniard Peralta and Fray
Marcos de Niza – the stories involving the mountains never
end.
The historic Apache Trail is believed to have originated as the
footpath used by the Anasazi Indians to travel from the Tonto
Basin area to trade with the Hohokam Indians. As settlers
began farming in the lower areas, they used the same canals
that had been dug by the Hohokams over 1,000 years earlier.
Even with the canal system in place, the volume of water
needed to support farming was never assured. The local
farmers petitioned Congress for aid to construct a dam to
provide consistent water flow for farming purposes.
The construction of a dam was granted, and funding for a
hydroelectric facility was approved by President Theodore
Roosevelt on June 17, 1902. Using the Apache Trail as the
supply route for dam construction, the roadway has changed
little since that time. Since the dedication of Roosevelt Dam
on March 18, 1911 the Apache Trail, now a route for tourist
travel, has become a challenge for many a tourist traveling the
hairpin turns, narrow roadways, steep cliffs and deep gorges.
Along the trail, adventure comes alive – beginning with a
lesson rich in history depicted at the Superstition Mountain
Historical Museum. Stop by the Historic Mining Camp
Restaurant and Trading Post for food and souvenirs. The
ghost town of Goldfield replicates the mining history of the
area with jeep tours, horseback riding at the OK Corral, and
more – all originating at the town’s location.
The Superstition Mountains are a hiker’s dream. Trails
originating at the Lost Dutchman State Park take hikers to
elevations well over 5,000 feet on trails ranging in difficulty
from moderate to very difficult. The Sonoran Desert, pine
trees, green grass, Indian petroglyphs, and the famous
Weaver’s Needle are part of the excitement. It is said that
Weaver’s Needle is an important piece of the Lost Dutchman
Mine mystery.
Continuing along the Apache Trail, Canyon Lake (the second
in a series of lakes downstream from the Roosevelt Dam)
features a cantina, the Dolly steamboat, boating, fishing and
camping.
Tortilla Flat, a stage stop of years gone by, is a great spot to
take a break before continuing to the town of Roosevelt.
Beyond on Highway 188, at the Tonto National Monument,
visitors can hike up to ancient cliff dwellings dating back to
1400 A.D.
Continue on to the Besh-Ba-Gowah Archeological Park Ruins
and Museum, at Globe, then on to Miami where Highway
188 comes to an end. You can return to Apache Junction via
Highway 60 and visit the Boyce Thompson Arboretum,
Arizona’s oldest botanical garden.
As Highway 60 comes off the mountain, Peralta Trailhead has
great hiking and horseback riding trails.
Gold Canyon, Superstition Mountain and Apache Junction
are home to some of Arizona’s premier golf courses. Barleen’s
Dinner Theater and Apache Greyhound Park are great endof-day activities where you can kick back, have fun and enjoy
wonderful musical talent or off-track betting.
Explore the history of the Superstition Mountains and the
Lost Dutchman State Park, with nature trails, horseback trails,
and picnic facilities. A variety of educational programs are
held throughout the year.
Apache Junction is the trailhead to adventure!

to accomplish economic growth.
Vision Statement

Testimonials
Peter Heck, 1st Vice Chair
Horizon Bay Retirement Living
Having had the opportunity to participate on the Apache Junction
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has proven to be wonderful
and enlightening experience. My observation is that the staff and
volunteers who are associated with the chamber are both professional
and dedicated to the success of the City of Apache Junction as a
community and a place for businesses to prosper. The Apache Junction
Chamber of Commerce can be a powerful tool and resource for a local
business owner or leader when utilized appropriately. The chamber
provides a variety of methods to promote and advertise one’s business.
In addition, business owners have the opportunity to network with
other business owners, leaders and prospects through connections
created through the chamber. However, the key to this process is
understanding that participation with the Apache Junction Chamber
of Commerce is a partnership. One only receives the benefits from
being a member what one puts into exploring the opportunities to
partner with the Chamber. Together, the Chamber and our business
professionals can succeed!
Paul Pecora, Immediate Past Chair

I am a Chamber Member for many reasons. First, I believe our
company has an obligation to be a good corporate citizen through its
participation and involvement in the community. One of the best
ways to show our support of the Chamber and our fellow members is
through our membership, participation and financial support. In
addition, membership of the Chamber provides our organization with
visibility and access to business growth opportunities through
Chamber sponsored events. These events whether large or small offer
us the ability to foster and develop partnerships and relationships
with other Chamber members and the community we serve. Finally,
membership in the Chamber provides an avenue to be an active voice
in the direction our community heads. Through our membership, we
have access and ability to provide input to our government officials
and other business leadership on key issues and topics our community
is faced with currently and in the future.
Don Breiland, 1Secretary/Treasurer

I have always personally believed that a person should try to give
something back to the community where you live and work. I reside
in Apache Junction and after recently getting off the Board of
Director's for St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, I wanted to pursue
another volunteer opportunity and the Chamber of Commerce was my
choice. In addition, my employer, SRP, is incredibly supportive of
both local businesses and also their employees who volunteer their
time for charities and other organizations like the Chamber of
Commerce. It is my hope that I can play a small role in helping the
Chamber and Apache Junction and the surrounding area become an
even more vibrant business community.
