2008 Annual Report
Mission:
The Sunshine Kids Foundation adds quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with exciting,
positive group activities, so they may once again do what Kids are supposed to do . . .
have fun and celebrate life!
Goal:
We look forward to the day when The Sunshine Kids Foundation will no longer need to exist.
Until that time, the entire Sunshine Kids family is dedicated to providing the most exciting activities,
trips and events for as many young cancer patients as possible.

A Message from our Board Chairperson
To Our Foundation Friends and Family,
The year 2008 was challenging in many respects and filled with wonderful experiences for the Kids.
There were eleven national and seven regional trips in 2008 with hundreds of children enjoying these
exciting events. Those trips are always the highlights but we cannot overlook the tremendous impact the
Foundation has on so many other children involved in the over 150 local activities that were staged throughout
the year. Our supporters will be pleased to know how much that list has grown as a result of our satellite office in
Los Angeles, CA.
Hurricane Ike and a less than stellar real estate market postponed our plans to expand with another satellite
office in 2008. Those plans are still on the horizon for 2009. Your Board of Directors has been working diligently
to expand our fundraising capabilities and to touch more children with cancer. The staff continues to make great
strides to increase efficiencies and be good stewards of the donations. They are a small and mighty group.
We were also very fortunate to have sponsors that increased their donations in 2008.
We experienced another milestone this past year. Akara Forsythe, M.D. joined our Board of Directors. Akara is
a former Sunshine Kid herself and brings that special knowledge to our planning and decision-making. What a
wonderful asset she will be.
Our achievements this year would not have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, sponsors and
donors. We thank you for your interest and support and for helping our Kids celebrate life.

Dear Friends,
It is letters like the one that follows that encourage the Sunshine Kids Foundation to strive to touch the lives
of even more Kids fighting cancer. We are extremely grateful for the support and generosity of all of our
friends. It is because of you that we, together, are able to continue to make a difference in the lives of the
very special children we serve.
Through our trips and activities, thousands of children suffering with cancer are provided the opportunity to
meet new friends, have fun and enjoy life! On behalf of the Foundation and young cancer patients across
North America, please accept our profound gratitude for your continued support and please remember that
“those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves”.

Dear Sunshine Kids Organization,
I attended the recent Sunshine Kids trip to Honolulu, Hawaii with the Santa Barbara, CA group. I wanted to thank you truly from the bottom of my heart for a
wonderful experience. I am sure you are aware of the amount of good these sorts of trips do, but I just wanted to tell you it personally helped me immensely with
how I view my cancer situation.
Though I have been finished with treatment a little over a year now, the trauma that is cancer has the potential to live on in the mind forever. For the week in
Hawaii, that trauma, that looming fear, seemed to magically disappear. Being among all the other hopeful patients, I felt safe and understood. The first night upon
arrival, my eyes met many, and with each new eye contact came an unspoken bond felt around the room. I am so thankful to have met so may inspiring kids that
seemed to see the world so similar to me, as compared to others my age and place in life.
Every activity we took part in reminded me of what a beautiful place this world is. The whole staff was marvelous. I could feel the love radiating out of them in
every way they helped.
Words seem to be insufficient for the thanks you deserve. Just know I overwhelmingly appreciate the Sunshine Kids Organization. You all are making a world of
difference.
