Hello Lions, Lioness and LEOS,
My year will be ended as you read this so I
wanted to thank so many of the folks that made
this year successful. Each and every club added
members. We all work as a team. As of this writing our district has a growth of 30 members for

I would like to thank the GLT PDG Bernie for
her leadership. Also I want to thank GMT PCC
Bob for his leadership. If it was not for these
teams and the leadership they gave to the district
I doubt that our district would have successfully
been on the plus side of membership growth.
Thank you teams.
Update on Camp Confidence Handicap Golf

Can Do Canines’ Lions Newsletter
Submission – July, 2016
Want to take your dog for a walk and support Can Do
Canines at the same time? Well, here is your chance!
Bring your dogs and your friends and celebrate the
amazing partnership between assistance dogs and the
people who need them at the Can Do Woofaroo. This
outdoor family-fun fundraising event includes a fundraising walk, dog-centric vendors, a food truck, dog costume contest, music and more! All ages are welcome.
New this year is a chance to see your dog on the big
screen at Can Do Canines first ever Dog Video Festival!
Participants may submit their whimsical dog video in
advance for consideration, and videos will be shown on
a special outdoor screen for attendees.
Every dollar raised at the Can Do Woofaroo helps provide freedom, independence and peace of mind for
someone with a disability. Simply put, your support
helps Can Do Canines train more assistance dogs and
help more people. Join us in helping our dogs fetch
amazing things for their partners!

One Last Project ! MPLS LYN LAKE
At the June 2nd meeting of the Minneapolis Lyn-Lake Lions it was decided due to
declining membership to disband. However, we have one fundraising commitment:
monitoring Uptown Cub parking lot during the Uptown Art Festival held Friday August 5th to Sunday August 7th.
All funds raised will be donated to LCIF.
We are committed to monitor the parking lot from 11:30 AM to 7 PM on Friday
August 5th. From 9:30 AM till 7:00 PM on Saturday August 6th , and from 9:30 AM
till 5:30 PM on Sunday August 7th.
Two Lions are needed to monitor the parking lot for each shift (shifts are flexible). A total of 56 volunteer hours are needed to cover the three days . With only six
Lyn-Lake Lions available we need help!
If any Lion in District 5M5 can help with this fundraiser, please contact Lion Rod
Jenkins at 952-922-3178 or at [email protected] before August 1st .

DUES INCREASE
Effective July 1, 2016, all Lions clubs will be
billed by our District Treasurer for $1.00 per
member more annually. Please note that District
5M-5 has not increased our own district dues.
This dues increase is because, at the 2016 Annual MD5M Convention, the delegates voted to
increase the Multiple District Dues by $1.00 per
member for the MD5M Administrative Fund.
Our District Treasurer bills all Lions clubs for
both District and Multiple District dues. Of the
$14.35 annual dues per member dues, $6.55
goes to our Multiple District, $7.80 to our District.
Therefore, in July Lions clubs in District 5M-5
will receive an invoice for $7.18 per member
dues and another invoice in January for $7.17
per member dues.

The Eden Prairie Lions hold their 4th annual 3rd
and 4th of July event in conjunction with the city
of Eden Prairie’s 4th annual “Hometown Celebration” The event featured a larger BINGO tent
and our Beer trailer with traditional beer offerings and craft beer offerings as well as
wines. Each year the event has grown and prize/
gift contributions from local business’s allow the
club to make this event even more profitable as
more of our ticket sales go right to our community fund. In the past the event has been our 2nd
largest fundraiser during our year. The event’s
success would not be possible without the ever
increasing partnership with the city of Eden Prairie which had renewed focus starting 4 years
ago.

In a few weeks ,the summer of 2016 will be half
over! Has your club scheduled a knowledgeable and entertaining summer speaker yet?
One of the very best recommendations our 5M5 Speakers Bureau can recommend is the Minnesota Twins team
historian and curator,
Clyde Doepner. He’s been with the Twins for well over
30 years, and he brings a wealth of knowledge. artifacts,
and interesting stories
to your meeting.
Have a small club? Plan a joint meeting with a neighboring Lions club, or have an open meeting for members to
bring prospective new members to.
Or maybe have a steak fry. The possibilities are endless,
and with Clyde as your speaker, you will have a program
that will make you proud to be a Lion!
Joseph H. Schwalen, Sr.
Age 71 of Eden Prairie passed away on May
24, 2016, with loved
ones by his side. He
attended the U of MN
and was enlisted in
the Army from 196567. He was a mechanical engineer
and commercial
printer who traveled
in the USA and
Europe and received
many honors for his excellent service. His
passion was racing, his SLK Mercedes, and
the Lions Club of Eden Prairie. He mentored
many members and gave freely of his time
and encouragement. Survived by wife Nancy;
son, Joseph Schwalen; step-daughters; Jill
Nieman and Anne Vaughan (Trey); grandchildren Nolan and Georgia. A celebration of
Joe's life will be held at Pax Christi Catholic
Community, 12100 Pioneer Trail, Eden Prairie, June 22nd, 10:30 AM visitation and service at 11 AM followed by a luncheon. Memorials to Park Nicollet Hospice or Lions Clubs
