Anu Srivastava becomes the Chairperson of Panorama India File Photo - Anu Srivastava & Arun Srivastava THE FINAL COUNTDOWN - RAHUL GANDHI MIGHT BE FIGHTING ONE OF HIS TOUGHEST ELECTORAL BATTLES IN AMETHI THIS TIME, FACING AAM AADMI PARTY'S KUMAR VISHWAS AND BJP'S SMRITI IRANI. REPORT ON PAGE 5 Ontario Elections On June 12 L ast week the ruling Ontario Liberals presented the Budget on Thursday but the very next day Ontario NDP leader Anrea Horwarth announced her party cannot support the budget. Sensing that her Goverenment will fall Premier Kathleen Wynne met with the Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario who accepted her recommendation that Parliament be dissolved for a general election. The election for Ontario's 41st Parliament will take place on Thursday, June 12. the Ontario Liberals claim that they brought forth a strong budget for Ontario to build opportunity and security ?today and tomorrow. But the NDP chose not to support it. And now we face a choice - a choice between Kathleen Wynne's safe hands and Tim Hudak's risky ideas. It's a choice that will decide the future of our province. With all of that on the line, Ontario Liberals are doing everything we can to win this election. Speaking in Richmond Hill Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne said "Nothing is more inspiring than to speak to young people. I am eager to know the great leaders they will become. I think leadership is about making tough decisions. Those that allow an opening today, and tomorrow. That's what I intend to continue to do as premier of Ontario. " Ontario PC party was in no mood to support the Budget and wants Elections. Ontario needs a leader who is focused on jobs and balancing the budget, not a government only interested in staying in power, PC Leader Tim Hudak said ."The Ontario of today has too many people out of work. Too many families are getting squeezed with paycheques that are too small. And too many politicians are worried more about their own jobs than the jobs of Ontarians," said Hudak. "More now than ever, Ontario needs competent economic management that is focused on a plan for jobs," added Hudak. "What is best for Ontarians should come ahead of what is best for politicians. "Kathleen Wynne has been given a year to prove she was different than Dalton McGuinty," Hudak said. "She has only proven that nothing has changed." Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath gave an interview to CBC Metro Morning and was in Brampton on Monday to support NDP candidates. Andrea has defended her decision not to support the Liberal Budget. Andrea Horwath, Leader of Ontario's New Democrats, says she has lost confidence in the Liberal government amid mounting scandal and waste and that it's time for change. "The Liberal budget is a mad dash to escape scandal by promising the moon and the stars," said Horwath. "It is time for a government that stands up for middle class families. It is time for a government that respect's people's tax dollars. It is time for a government that makes sense," she said. "This government has no plan to get the basics right, like creating jobs, lowering hydro rates, and making life more affordable," said Horwath. The last-ditch budget comes after the Liberals failed to deliver results on a series of promises made in the previous year's budget, including reducing auto insurance rates, cutting home care wait times, and setting up a Financial Accountability Office. "The same government that couldn't fulfill three promises over the last year is making more than 70 new promises this year. How can Kathleen Wynne build a ship, when she hasn't managed to build a raft?" said Horwath. CONTD. Are you happy with the way the song has turned out? We did not want to do only music with One Love, One Rhythm: The Official 2014 Fifa World Cup album. We were looking at different ways to confluence the culture of Brazil with everything that is going around the world and take it to other heights. It feels great to have collaborated with amazing ar tists such as Jennifer and Claudia to present an anthem like We are One for FIFA 2014. You have collaborated with Jennifer Lopez earlier as well. And the actor wants to be a hands-on dad. "Imran is eagerly looking forward to this new phase of his life. He is most excited about it," says an insider. So much so that despite -having just one film (Nikhil Advani’s next) in hand, Imran is in no hurry to take up new projects. "Right now, his entire focus is on the baby. So, new movies will only be -discussed after a few months," adds the insider. Imran has also told Nikhil that he would star t work on his film a month or so after the baby’s bir th. "He wants to spend time with his child," adds the insider. But even if Imran hadn’t requested for it, the project would have gone on the floors only around August, since Nikhil is busy wrapping up his next film, the remake of Hero (1983). "That is also one of the reasons why Imran is in no hurry. Everything will be finalised once Nikhil is back," the insider adds. Although actor Ileana D’Cruz’s name has been doing the rounds to play Imran’s leading lady in the film, the insider insists no one has been finalised yet. When we -contacted Imran, he sent a text message saying, "I am looking forward to the new role of a real-life father." John Abraham to fly to Brazil for the football World Cup ONCE AGAIN, BOLLYWOOD'S 'KHILADI' ACTOR AKSHAY KUMAR IS GOING IN FOR A TURBANED LOOK IN "SINGH IS BLING". IN RECENT YEARS, 'PUNJABIZATION' HAS TAKEN OVER BOLLYWOOD AND IT SEEMS THAT PLAYING A "SINGH" HAS BECOME TRENDY WITH QUITE A FEW ACTORS DONNING THE TURBAN. Here are the five top actors, who wore the turban with aplomb on big screen: AKSHAY KUMAR: He first played a Sikh in "Singh Is Kinng" (2008) and the audience loved his character so much so that the film turned into a blockbuster. It still rules the hear t of the Singhs in the country. It even touched Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Coming out of parliament after winning a crucial trust vote in 2008, he flashed the V for victory sign and many a TV channel had "Singh is Kinng" playing in the background. The film was appreciated so much that the 46-year-old Akshay was nominated for the best actor award at the 3rd Asian Film Awards for his performance. He will now be seen playing a Sikh again in the film's second instalment, "Singh Is Bling", which is slated to release in July 2015. SUNNY DEOL: In recent times, Sunny Deol is the one who has perhaps turned Sikh on the celluloid the maximum number of times - "Border" (1997) "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha" (2001), "The Legend of Bhagat Singh" (2002), "Jo Bole So Nihaal" (2005), and "Yamla Pagla Deewana" (2011). The 57-year-old was appreciated for his work in all of his endeavours. SAIF ALI KHAN: Known for his metrosexual image, Tiger Pataudi's son Saif Ali Khan too wrapped the turban to essay Veer Singh in "Love Aaj Kal"(2009), directed by Imtiaz Ali. The 43-year-old, who played a double role in the romantic comedy, impressed girls across the country with his style statement in the film. THE WORLD’S PREMIER FOOTBALL SPORTING EXTRAVAGANZA BEGINS IN JUST OVER A MONTH (JUNE 12) IN BRAZIL. Fans are in for several sleepless nights once the event commences since the games will be telecast live in India in the wee hours. But even as most catch the action on their TV sets, John Abraham has decided to watch some of the matches in Brazil. The actor, apparently, will be flying to the country and will be cheering for his favourite team — Spain — from the stands at some of the venues hosting the mega event next month. A close acquaintance of the actor reveals that John doesn’t want to miss out on the experience of watching the 2014 Fifa World Cup in a country where football is such a popular spor t. "His busy schedule won’t allow him to be out of India for the entire duration of the tournament, which goes on for about a month. He is trying to adjust his schedule in such a way that his trip doesn’t hamper his work,” says the source. However, the actor has not yet decided which matches he would like to watch when he is in Brazil. The source is also not sure whether he would be accompanied by his wife, Priya Runchal, on this trip. "No one knows if he plans to go solo, with his wife or friends," adds the source. Despite repeated attempts to contact trying John, the actor remained unavailable for comment. RANBIR KAPOOR: Current hear tthrob Ranbir Kapoor was seen with turban in "Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year" (2009). Rachel Saltz of New York Times called it "a smar t, focussed Bollywood movie" and commended the 31-yearold for "turning in a skillfully understated per formance". AJAY DEVGN: Ajay Devgan furnished an exquisite performance of his career as freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in "The Legend of Bhagat Singh". For the 2002 release, directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, he received the National Film Award for best actor. Later, the 45-year-old did a humorous role in "Son of Sardaar" (2012) as Jaswinder Singh. 3 4 MidWeek special report MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, MAY 06, 2014 Infosys Chairman, Narayana Murthy receives CIF Chanchlani Global Indian Award The vast Metropolitan Ballroom of the Westin Harbour Castle was the venue for the Canada India Foundation's Award Gala, which took place on April 26, 2014, to honour Infosys Executive Chairman, Narayana Mur thy, as the 2014 recipient of the CIF Chanchlani Global Indian Award. MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, MAY 06, 2014 breaking news INDIA ELECTIONS - THE FINAL COUNTDOWN MODI HAS INSULTED MY FATHER: PRIYANKA "Inhone Amethi ki dharti pe mere shaheed pitaa ka apmaan kiya hai, Amethi ki janta is harkat ko kabhi maaf nahi karegi. Inki neech rajniti ka jawaab mere booth ke karyakartaa denge….Amethi ke ek ek booth se jawaab aayega…(He has insulted my martyred father on Amethi's soil. The people of Amethi will never forgive him for this. My booth-level workers in Amethi will reply to his low-level politics. There will be a reply from each and every booth of Amethi)," she said. "Inhone Amethi ki dharti pe mere shaheed pitaa ka apmaan kiya hai, Amethi ki janta is harkat ko kabhi maaf nahi karegi. Hitting back at BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Priyanka Vadra on Monday accused him of "insulting" her "martyred" father Rajiv Gandhi and said he would get a befitting reply from "each and every booth" of Amethi. LALIT MODI ELECTED RCA PRESIDENT NEW DELHI: Despite BCCI ban, Lalit Modi was elected RCA president on Tuesday, an announcement that is sure to set off another legal battle between the two cricket boards. NM Kasliwal, the Supreme Cour t-appointed observer for the elections held on December 19 last year, declared the winners at the RCA Academy in Jaipur. The board's lawyers had already conceded that the banned Modi had won by a landslide margin and had warned that action could be taken against the RCA and cricketers affiliated to it if the former BCCI vice-president is allowed to take charge. As per repor ts, Modi received over 25 out of 33 votes. Two cricketers from Rajasthan who feature in any one of the India squads are batsman Ashok Menaria and medium-pacer Abhimanyu Lamba. Menaria is a par t of the Indian Emerging side, while Lamba was in the national U-19 squad. If the BCCI's threat to is be believed, both these cricketers will no longer figure in the India squads. However, sources told TOI that it won't be easy for the BCCI to take action against the RCA in haste, as the Supreme Cour t is involved in the entire election process. Any BCCI action has to follow the proper procedure as per its laws, which is a long-drawn process. Subrata Roy to remain in jail, SC rejects Sahara's latest refund proposal NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the chief of Sahara conglomerate to remain in jail over his company's failure to refund investors in an outlawed bonds scheme. The cour t also rejected Sahara's latest proposal to pay, in installments, the 100 billion rupees ($1.7 billion) bail the court has asked for to secure chairman Subrata Roy's release. The cour t also asked Sahara to make a new proposal. Roy has been in a Delhi jail since March 4 after failing to appear at a contempt hearing in a long-running legal battle between his group and the Indian capital markets regulator Sebi. MidWeek With inputs from Shazia Malik The marathon Indian elections continue with the eighth phase taking place on May 7 when electoral will vote for 64 seats and the final Phase on 12th May . The much awaited results will be out on May 16th. Yudhvir Jaswal aired this during his recent Radio show Southasian Pulse. He added that BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has vowed to check corruption and corrupt practices in politics if he come to power. He made these remarks while in Amethi to support BJP Candidate Smriti Irani. Yudhvir told that a sharp criticism has come from Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi who while voicing his indignation on this statement questioned the credibility of B.S Yeddyurappa in Karnatka saying how can Modi talk of a corruption-free society when such people are still part of BJP's fabric? Yudhvir also asked on the show that if Narendra Modi becomes India's next prime minister, history might repeat itself as in the times of Manmohan 5 Singh, who was incorruptible but others had a field day right under his nose. Can Modi make sure that there is no Corrupt Minister in his Government in the era of Coalition Politics. Dr Ranvir Sharda said that that recent that recent surveys show though Modi could not wipe the menace out completely, corruption in Gujrat was 25% less compared to the rest of India. Even a clean party like AAP during its 49-day rule could only obliterate 25% corruption in Delhi AAP. Dr Sharda said he was upbeat about the country's future and slowly things will take a change for better but in huge countries like India, getting rid of this vice is a daunting task. Yudhir further argued if AAP in matter of a few months could rally around it 400 honest candidates at National level why established political parties did not? The reason is that for traditional parties victory by hook or by crook is of more significance than a person with spotless character? 6 MidWeek community SAMPRADAYA Dance Creations Brings International Bharatanatyam Dance Artist Vidhya Subramanian To Mississauga DESK REPORT TORONTO - Acclaimed bharatanatyam dance artist Vidhya Subramanian (USA) will hold a solo performance for one night only on Saturday, May 10 at 4pm in Sampradaya Theatre, Mississauga. The continually high number of new citizens welcomed in Scarborough demonstrates how the government is working to make the citizenship program more efficient, helping more people realize their dream of becoming Canadian sooner. QUICK FACTS " Since 2006, Canada has enjoyed the highest sustained levels of immigration in Canadian history an average of a quarter million newcomers each year. As per the constitutional provisions millions of citizens cast the ballot on a reoccurring regular frequency of 5 years. These ballots will chose their representative to the parliament. These representatives then elect a suitable government and a PM. Elections in 2014 come after a decade of UPA rule. These are one of the most exciting and hotly contested elections in the history of India. The biggest fight is between the scandal prone ruling UPA and the main opposition alliance NDA lead by Gujarat CM and its star campaigner Narender Modi. The democratic journey of the nation since independence has seen the longest rule by Congress par ty. The BJP after decades of hardwork has emerged as a credible alternative. We should understand that India is a diverse nation and the regional par ties always have an impor tant role to play in the governance. Modi is the current CM of Gujarat and is termed as an efficient administrator. He is projected as a man with vision and has taken his home state on the path of progress. Modi was tainted by the riots in Gujarat in 2002. The third front refers various political alliances formed by smaller regional parties. They are challenging INC and BJP. At the begning of the election the political think tanks had assumed this would a vote against ruling Congress anti incumbency factor. To take advantage of the situation the BJP put its best bet forward in the form of messiah of development Modi. A large section of media has worked hard to project him as a man who has the talent and will take the country forward. The emergence of Aam Admai Par ty has upset many calculations. In Nor th it has emerged as a force to be recon. It goes to the credit of Mr. Kejriwal that in a shor t time he has taken his social movement to the hearts of millions. The suppor t he got from the citizens should be an eye opener to all political think tanks. This clearly shows people were looking for a solution to end the rotting corrupt and inefficient governance. The question which arises is why were the other leading political parties not able to catch on this agenda. The feeling of change is omnipresent then why did they neglect such an important issue? Could they not hear the desperate voices of common man are they not in touch with the what people want? Indians are not isolated in this demand for end to these dishonest means. The Arab Spring awakening which changed the ruling equations had its spontaneous inception in the sweet and blood of the man in the street. Residents took up arms against governments who were strong and involved in wrong doings. It is time when the rulers have to change the mind set and bring for th the reforms. I belong to Punjab and toured exclusively to understand the mood of the people. I talked to top level and grass root level party workers of BJP and Congress. I was trying to understand why they could not capitalize on something which a non political element could. Most of them treat AAP as another Manpreet Badal and PPP. They say it is more of a hype and people would not vote. This would be clear on with results on May 16. Irrespective of the number of seats AAP gets one thing is clear with the kind of suppor t he is getting on his road shows is that people want a change. They are looking for a system which is efficient and works without greasing the palms. The rulers should do this introspection within their workers and weed out the tainted ones. This will go a long way in making a strong and vibrant India. MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, MAY 06, 2014 india INDIA ELECTIONS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN CONTD. FROM PAGRE 5 But he agreed with Dr Sharda that change is in the air and in fact BJP replaced Vijay Goel with Dr. Harshvardhan who had a clean image as their Chief Ministerial Candidate during Delhi Assembly elections. In his campaign blitz on the last day in Uttar Pradesh, Modi invoked Lord Ram in Faizabad and stormed Amethi to campaign for BJP candidate Smriti Irani, saying people now want a "change". The eighth phase of polls saw Rahul's sister Priyanka's extensive campaign in Amethi where she attacked the BJP prime ministerial candidate while seeking votes for Congress. In Uttar Pradesh, besides grandsons of former prime Minister Indira Gandhi - Rahul and Varun, Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma (Gonda) and cricketerturned-politician Mohd Kaif (Phulpur) are among 243 candidates in the fray in this phase. Also Congress state president Nirmal Khatri (Faizabad) and poet-turned-politician and Aam Aadmi Paty's Kumar Vishwas (Amethi) are contesting. In Amethi, while Vishwas is banking on the power of "aam aadmi", Irani is trying to cash in on Modi wave and by highlighting "lack of development" in Rahul's 10 year regime as MP. Varun, who was last time elected from Pilibhit, has shifted his base and is pitted against Amita Singh, wife of MP Sanjay Singh. This phase is crucial for Congress as of 15 seats spread over 17 districts, seven were won by the party in 2009 polls while five seats are with the BSP and SP had won three seat. 72 candidates are contesting in six seats in West Bengal where Modi raised the emotive issue of illegal immigrants, drawing a sharp reaction from Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee who called the BJP PM candidate a "paper tiger" and accused him of stoking communal fire. Modi hit back at Banerjee daring her to prove herself a "real tiger" by taking action against the culprits in the Saradha scam. Pressure is on the Left Front in this round to retain the six seats it had won the last time as nine-time MP Basudeb Acharia, former actresses Moonmoon Sen and Sandhya Roy and singer Babul Supriyo are expected to give a tough fight. In Bihar, where 118 candidates are contesting, former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad's wife Rabri Devi is seeking to make her debut in the Lok Sabha from Saran, which is among the seven seats in the state going for polls on May 7. Rabri is pitted against BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Both Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are going for a single-phased election.. While Himachal Pradesh has four seats, Uttarakhand has five. Baramulla and Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir are also going to polls in this phase. After the Telangana region voted in the last phase, it is now the turn for Seemandhra region of Andhra Pradesh to cast votes in eighth phase, with 333 candidates contesting from 25 Lok Sabha seats. The main contest appears to be between the TDP-BJP combine and YSRCP. Lok Sabha and assembly elections are being held simultaneously in Andhra Pradesh. These are the last Lok Sabha and Assembly polls being held in the undivided Andhra Pradesh. Telangana will come into being as the 29th state of the country on June 2. With reference to a recent incident in which a group of Kashmiri students were allegedly forced to shout pro-India and antiPakistan slogans, roughed up and terrorised at a college hostel in Noida, Mr. Abdullah said at a rally in nor thern Kashmir that such acts of intimidation would only serve to alienate Mr. Modi to Kashmiris. He alleged that Mr. Modi’s henchmen had trooped into a hostel and terrorised the students. “In a statement, Mr. Modi has attempted to denigrate the Kashmiris in the entire country as a communal race,” Mr. Abdullah said. “Mr. Modi, we are the people who raised the slogan of the Hindu-Muslim-Sikh unity. We have held this country’s flag high out of our conviction, not out of any compulsion. Be cautious that this act of yours to send your henchmen to the universities to terrorise the Kashmiri students will not help you to win the hearts of the Kashmiris. It will only take you away far ther from them.” “Mr. Modi, you should learn [how to protect] your guests from us. Every year, we receive hundreds of tourists and pilgrims. We treat them all as our guests. We take them on our shoulders to perform the pilgrimage and send them back home hale and hear ty. When the situation deteriorates here, not one of them is harmed a bit. This is our respect for our guests,” Mr. Abdullah said. Police asks Kumar Vishwas's wife, family members to leave Amethi, claims AAP LUCKNOW: A posse of police swooped on par ty candidate Kumar Vishwas's house late on Monday night, asking all family members who are not voters of Amethi to leave or else they will be arrested. Though police said that it was enforcing orders of the Election Commission to make 'outsiders' leave Amethi after the time of campaigning ended on Monday evening, AAP leaders accused police and district administration of targeting only their par ty, while ignoring Congress and BJP. The police first arrived at Vishwas's house at Awas Vikas Colony at around 10.45pm asking family members who are not voters of Amethi to leave or else they would be arrested. A verbal duel ensued when Vishwas rejected police's argument that his wife, sisters and children will also have to leave. He also challenged them to carry out similar exercise at places like Munshiganj guest house where Congress leaders are staying and BJP offices. While the confrontation was on, some AAP volunteers informed media-persons and tweeted photographs of police surrounding Vishwas's house. The police left at around 11.15pm when some TV channels arrived to cover the action live. However, as soon as channels left, police came back again. 12 MidWeek MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, MAY 06, 2014 MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, MAY 06, 2014 MidWeek india AT FINAL CABINET MEETING, PM STOPS $400-MN FDI DEAL 13 short stories shortstories SC dismisses Ashok Chavan’s petition in paid news case The Supreme Court on Monday said that the Election Commission was empowered to inquire into the allegation of paid news if the expenses for the same are not being reflected in the election return filed by the candidate. The apex court bench of Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla said this while dismissing a plea by former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. Having held that the Commission can inquire into the allegation, the court dismissed the plea by Mr. Chavan, who had challenged the Delhi High Court order, holding that the commission can inquire into the allegations of paid news if same was not disclosed by the candidate in his election expenses returns. The court said that the Commission will hold day-to-day hearing and decide the complaint in 45 days. Mr. Chavan, in 2009 Assembly election had won from Bhokar seat in Nanded. His opponent, independent candidate Madhav Kinhalkar, filed a complaint with the Election Commission, accusing him of hiding expenses on a ‘paid’ supplement titled Ashok Parva (The era of Ashok) in a leading Marathi daily. Mr. Chavan and the daily’s management denied the allegation saying that the supplement was not a paid one. The Election Commission probed into Mr. Kinhalkar’s allegations. The Delhi High Court in 2010 declined Mr. Chavan’s plea seeking the stay of the Election Commission proceedings. He then moved the apex court in November 2011. Even as the Bharatiya Janata Par ty has demanded that the government refrain from crucial decisions and appointments at the fag end of its term, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “struck off” a $400-million foreign investment proposal from KKR, a Manhattan-headquar tered specialist in leveraged takeovers of managements, at the final Cabinet meet on Thursday. Dr. Singh’s inter vention “perhaps aver ted another controversy at the fag end of the election,” a source said. Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia said at the meeting that the government could approve the deal as the Foreign Investment Promotion Board had recommended that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approve it, highly placed sources close to Dr. Singh told The Hindu, requesting anonymity. The Prime Minister, however, refused to listen to his Cabinet colleagues and an ‘asser tive’ Dr. Singh struck the proposal off, they said. KKR was formerly known as Kohlberg Kravis Rober ts, whose leveraged buyout of a U.S. tobacco and food conglomerate, RJR Nabisco, in the 1980s inspired the film Barbarians at the Gate. “… the Prime Minister might have had the firm’s reputation at DR. SINGH REFUSED TO LISTEN TO CHIDAMBARAM, MONTEK AHLUWALIA; AVERTED ANOTHER CONTROVERSY the back of his mind,” the source said. The foreign direct investment policy for Indian manufacturers of injectables has been the bone of contention at several Cabinet meetings, with Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad ranged against Mr. Chidambaram. Mr. Sharma has pressed for lowering the FDI cap from 100 per cent. Mr. Chidambaram, however, is in favour of keeping the policy unchanged to avoid sending wrong signals to investors. Hence, the Cabinet last year decided against a review. KKR wants to buy a 37.98 per cent stake in Hyderabad-based Gland Pharma, which develops and manufactures generic injectables primarily for the U.S. market, but also for India and other semi-regulated markets. The deal involves a 29.4% share purchase in Gland Celsus Bio Chemicals from an existing investor. COURT RECORDS STATEMENT OF RAJA IN 2G CASE A Delhi court on Monday recorded the statement of former Telecom Minister A. Raja, a key accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case. Special CBI Judge O.P. It is a direct conversation between the accused and the judge...you (accused) may chose to reply or not reply,” the judge said. Meanwhile, the special court, which was also scheduled to record the statements of promoters of Essar Group and Loop Telecom, who are facing trial in a case arising out of the probe into the 2G spectrum scam, deferred their deposition before it to May 19. “I think there will be no time for you today. The matter is adjourned for recording of statement of accused to May 19,” the judge said. The court had recorded statements of 153 CBI witnesses, including Anil Ambani, his wife Tina, former corporate lobbyist Niira Radia and Attorney-General G.E. Vahanvati. THREE MILITANTS KILLED IN ASSAM ENCOUNTER Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday apprised Congress president Sonia Gandhi of the situation in the massacre-hit Bodo Territorial Administration Districts of Baska and Kokrajhar when she rang up him and assured him of help. The police have registered five cases in connection with the killings and arrested 26 persons. In Sonitpur and Udalguri districts, three National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit) militants were killed in two encounters with a joint team of the police, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Army. The police said the outfit had carried out the massacres in Baska and Korajahar on Thursday and Friday to avenge the killing of three of their cadres in an encounter in Sonitpur on Wednesday. However, the affected people, the All India United Democratic Front, which is the major Opposition party in the State, the Sanmilita Janagosthiya Aikyamancha (SJA) and some of its constituent organisations pointed a finger at the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), the ruling party in the BTAD. They alleged that the former cadres of the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) had carried out the attacks on Muslim families as a BPF legislator and senior leader, Pramila Rani Brahma, had alleged that the party candidate from the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency, Chandan Brahma, was likely to lose the elections as the majority Muslims had not voted for him. Ms. Brahma later withdrew the statement on a party directive. The BPF was formed by former leaders of the erstwhile BLT. 14 MidWeek world CANADA ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL SANCTIONS AGAINST 16 RUSSIAN ENTITIES MIDWEEK NEWS WEEKLY TUESDAY, MAY 06, 2014 continue to increase economic pressure on Russia and those responsible for the crisis in Ukraine. Ranveer Singh gifts a ‘love’ pendant to girlfriend Deepika Padukone? Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who is riding high on the success of four back-to-back hits in 2013, is under the scanner every minute. And the most recent is a new pendant that she has been spor ting ever since her return from IIFA awards last week. According to repor ts, Deepika Padukone has been gifted a pendant with ‘Love’ embossed on it by her rumoured beau Ranveer Singh. While on ‘Koffee With Karan’, both Deepika and Ranveer (who had appeared separately) denied dating each other, however the host and filmmaker Karan Johar was not convinced. Deepika Padukone’s outing with Ranveer Singh at IIFA awards in Tampa Bay, Florida, also raised a few eyebrows as to what was brewing between the two. Deepika’s selfie before a recent awards show in New Delhi which shows Ranveer Singh in the mirror reflection is also doing the rounds on social networking sites. Deepika Padukone was spotted wearing the same pendant while returning to Mumbai. The actress was dressed in a casual white sweater and jeans, had a shining golden pendant around her neck. Deepika Padukone has never shied away from showing off her love to the world. The actress, who has earlier dated Ranbir Kapoor, had inked his initials ‘RK’ on her nape to mark her love for the actor. However, after the two separated, she got the tattoo redesigned to look like a flower instead. But this time it looks like Deepika has learned her lesson and instead of getting her self inked she seems to wear her ‘love’. To make her abstract cine concept a reality, she roped in youngsters like Tanuj Virwani, Aditya Seal, Izabelle Leite et al under the umbrella of Purani Jeans. Purani Jean primarily narrates the saga of self proclaimed "Kasauli Cowboys" Siddhar th Rai alias Sid (Tanuj Vir wani) and Samuel Lawrence alias Sam (Aditya Seal) who are much more than best buddies ever-since their childhood. Things halcyon for this gang of boys, and especially Sid and Sam till the time, Nayantara (Izabelle Leite), comes in their lives and both the BFFs fall in love with her. With the frames rolling ahead, it's revealed that Nayantara loves Sid and when she gets to know about Sam's feelings for her, she asks Sid to tell about their relationship to Sam. So what follows subsequently, does Sid sacrifices his love for his friendship or is it Sam who makes way for Sid? To know try Tanushri Chattrij's old ale in new bottle "Purani Jean". Well there is no denying the fact that the story-line which Tanushri tried to push forward in the form of "Purani Jeans", where two buds fall in love with same girl dates back to Mesozoic era. Although in order to showcase a mild degree of variance, she experimented with the milieu and the backgrounds of the protagonists, but even that tryout of hers in no manner manages to grab your attention and rather adds to the anguish of the viewers. Even the screenplay of "Purani Jean" looks like a half-baked, halfsteamed insipid pudding. With constant prevalence of 'inapt execution' and 'confusion' even screenplay of "Purani Jeans" fails in reaching out to the hear ts of the masses and looks nothing more than a melodramatic affair. On one hand where first half of the movie looks like a humdr um affair, second half fur ther adds to devastation, where entire premise and flow of narration, and even the captivating coefficient gets buried in the depth of Mariana trench. Although 'Purani Jeans' is touted to be a movie about friendship and love, but even on that front it lacks the warmth which is required to make it a hear t-warming cine affair. Although its Tanuj Vir wani who is the so called leading man of 'Purani Jeans', but in reality it's Aditya Seal who steals the show. Be it dialogue delivery or emotional expressiveness Tanuj keeps on struggling through out the run time. On the the other hand his other counterpar t, Aditya Seal looks more confident and up-till great extent succeeds in portraying his character quite conveniently. While being the love interest of Sam and Sid, Nayantara aka Izabelle Leite is just OK, but still needs to brush her acting skills if she really want to carve a niche in Bollywood. Supporting cast comprising of Rati Agnihotri, Sarika, Manoj Pahwa, Param Baidwan, Kashyap Kapoor, Raghav Kakad are reasonably good. To sum up, with a thoroughly "Worn-out and Puraanaa" cine idea at its core, "Puraani Jeans" is undoubtedly a passable cine drama. Therefore I am going ahead with one and a half out of five stars for "Purani Jeans". A. R.
