the big rig Volume 11 Issue 5 April 5, 2012 weekend in the big house By: Craig Price The Merritt Oilers win State Runner-Up Class A Basketball Champions. The first time in school history the boys’ basketball team has brought home hardware from the State Basektball Tournament. In the first round the Oilers played #2 Velma Alma. Merritt being ranked #10 going into the tournament a lot of people counted them out early. The Oilers kept their heads up and played their hearts out. The Oilers fell behind in the first quarter but kept their heads. The Oilers were still down at half time. In the third quarter the Oilers came out for blood but not very many shots fell till the end of the quarter when Branson Daugherty hit a running three. In the fourth quarter the lead kept switching and the Oilers had the lead with less than 5 seconds on the clock. The Oilers won 52 to 50. In the Semi-finals the Oilers played #5 Okarche. The Oilers came out early and got up to a ten point lead. Okarche came back in the third quarter and closed the lead to one but the Oilers never gave up the lead. In the fourth Merritt pulled away again ending the game with the score of 50-39. In the finals the Oilers would face their rivals for the fourth and final time this year. Cheyenne took an early lead which the Oilers could never recover from. Cheyenne was making all their shots while the Oilers had a hard time getting anything to fall. Ryan Garner got a steal from Austin Thrash in the fourth quarter, which got Merritt rolling but it was a little too late. Merritt earned the silver ball this year. Seth Ashpaugh said “This is the first of many state championship appearances for Merritt and the first time we win the gold ball I’ll be there to see it.” (Boys story is continued on page 8.) Opinion page Layout by: Latrisha Gartin the big rig Bullying Cyber Bullying Physical Bullying This is the most obvious form of bullying. In this type of bullying, the instigator attempts to physically dominate another teen. This usually includes kicking, punching and other physically harmful activities, designed to scare one being bullied, and possible force him or her to do something. April 5, 2012 Electronic bullying is becoming a very real problem for teens. This type of bullying uses instant messaging, cell phone text messages and online social networks to humiliate and embarrass others. This can be especially devastating to the people being bullied, since they cannot even find a safe place in the virtual world. Page 2 By: Latrisha Gartin Many people retain horrible memories of high school, in large part due to the bullying they experienced. Teenage bullying is a very real problem in schools. What is bullying? Bullying includes behaviors that focus on making someone else feel unaccepted, or focus on belittling someone else. Bullying includes harassment, physical harm, repeatedly demeaning speech and efforts to put down another person. Bullying is active, and is done with the intention of bringing another person down. It is important to realize that there are different kinds of bullying such as physical, emotional, and cyber bullying. Is teenage bullying common? Emotional Bullying This is even more subtle than verbal bullying. Teenage bullying that includes emotional methods aims at getting someone else to feel isolated, alone and may even cause depression. This type of bullying is designed to get others to put down the person being bullied. According to statistics from Family First Aid, about 30 percent of teenagers in the U.S. have been involved in bullying, either as a bully or as a victim of teenage bullying. Data suggests that teenage bullying is more common among younger teens than it is among older teens. Physical bullying is more common among boys, and teenage girls often favor verbal and emotional bullying. While boys are more likely to be involved in physical altercations, girls are often the targets of nasty rumors. What are some of the effects of bullying? There are a number of effects that come with teenage bullying. First of all, there are the obvious physical problems and injuries that can result from physical bullying. However, emotional, verbal and cyber bullying can deeply affect teens as well. These activities can lead to depression (and even suicide), drug use. organization Layout by: chris farrar COACHES By: Naomi Leverett the big rig O.G.P.A.C By: Chris Farrar On Monday February 20th the high school academic team attended the Oklahoma Great Plains Academic Banquet in Hammon. “I had a good time and it helped that the food was really good.” said Mrs. Sarah Morris.
