Being 7 wins and 1 loss early in the season gave many of us a belief that the League team would go deep into the season and finish high in the top three. Things changed in the later part of the season, seeing us having to fight to hang onto fifth spot. Then going out so easy in the Elimination final was very disappointing. PRESIDENT CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The two AFL based teams changed the nature of the SANFL, for some, not agreeing to the change, but for the most, they saw the change as positive as the standard of the competition improved. This can be seen by the increase in the numbers coming to the football and the standard of the game. Unfortunately our Club was the only team in the SANFL not to have a win against the AFL listed teams. This result clearly affected our ability to play deep into the Finals. I know that Mick is hard at work to rectify this position in 2015. Once again the Reserves performance, led by Jarrad Wright, was outstanding in winning the Premiership, and going back to back. To Jarrad and the playing group well done. For those that attended the game you would have to agree that it was one of the best displays of reserves SANFL football seen for some time. Shane Grimm and the Under 18’s were going for a third consecutive Grand Final win, but it wasn’t to be, losing to West Adelaide. All goes well for the future of the Club as there are some outstanding juniors being developed through the Centre of Excellence in conjunction with the senior program that gives the Club great hope for future success. To all involved, well done. Challenges off the field also kept the Board and staff working hard to improve the running of the Football Club. The sale of the freehold of the Eagles Bar and Bistro was a decision made by the Board to assist setting the Club up to be financially sound long into the future. Through the sale process the Board has retained the leasehold of the business at the Eagles Bar and Bistro for the next fifty years. This change will help the Club’s long-term future. Once again, to the Board thank you for your support and commitment. The decision-making and commitment to the Club to make sure that the Club is to be financially sound and successful long into the future is a credit to each and every one of you. To David Lang, who is standing down after many years of service to the Club, thank you for your commitment. You have been involved in many of the major decisions that has put the Club in the position it is. You leave the position being a two time Premiership Board Member. Well done. To Scott Lewis, Congratulations on winning the 2014 Club Champion award. Your football journey is an interesting one and I know that this award will sit alongside your 2011 Premiership medallion. For the first time SANFL Clubs have had to compete week to week with professional players from the two AFL teams, but within SANFL Club budget constraints. The inclusion of Adelaide and Port Adelaide has created increased interest in the SANFL competition. Our challenge is to capitalise on this exposure commercially. Port Adelaide’s AFL sides inclusion in the competition also necessitated major changes to Club boundaries. As a result, the Eagles gained most of Port’s old metropolitan zone, and lost some old established areas. It could be argued that the Eagles have been more impacted than most. Whilst losing some of our zone is disappointing it also provides our Club with an enormous opportunity. Remember that lines on a map do not determine who you support. On the field, 2014 finished in a very disappointing fashion. We commenced the season with expectation and anticipation and got to the halfway point looking to be in a strong position to go deep into the final series. Unfortunately, that did not eventuate and our inability to perform well in finals for the past three seasons is an area that must be addressed immediately by the Football Department and playing group. As a Club we must expect to be in contention to win the premiership every year. The Eagles brand of football has always been one of tenacity and resilience. We must return to these qualities and expect more from ourselves. I know that our coach Michael Godden is desperate to gain future finals success. 2014 saw the retirement of two of our Club greats, Luke Powell and Adam Grocke. Both premiership players and tremendous leaders, they now enter the next phase of their lives, away from League football. They have both left an indelible mark on our Club, on and off the field. We thank them for their contributions to the Club and wish them all the best in whatever their futures hold. Their retirements provide an opportunity for other young leaders to contribute to the future directions of our great Club. CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT Congratulations to Jarrad Wright and our Reserves team in winning back-to-back premierships and to Shane Grimm and our Under 18 side in playing off in their third consecutive Grand Final. Whilst we continually aim to win league premierships, the sustained success of our Reserves and Under 18 teams will certainly underpin a winning culture, which these young players will bring to the senior side when their opportunity arises. 2014 saw the induction of former Woodville great, Bob Simunsen as the Woodville West Torrens Football Clubs seventh Life Governor. Bob’s outstanding career and contribution to our Club has been appropriately recognised and he is indeed a fitting recipient of this honour. The Board of Directors made the innovative decision to sell the land and buildings that house the Eagles Bar and Bistro and to lease them back for a significant number of years. This decision was not taken lightly and has enabled the Club to retire its debt, provide greater cash flow and still maintain the Club’s main revenue source for years to come. It is pleasing to note that the Eagles are the only SANFL Club that is currently debt free. It is imperative that we look for new income streams whilst maintaining the traditional income sources such as memberships, home match attendances, sponsorships and licensed premises operations. As a result of being debt free, we are well placed to make sound financial and investment decisions to secure the long-term financial sustainability of the Club. Eagles Bar and Bistro Manager, Vicki Wright, continues to maintain a sound business model in a very competitive and volatile industry. Planned refurbishments to the facility in 2015 will hopefully enable the continued growth in our main revenue source. I previously mentioned the importance of maintaining our traditional income streams and it is pleasing to report that home match attendances increased in 2014 by 8.9%. This was our fifth increase in the past six seasons and is a reflection of the great work that Phil Herden, Melissa McKenzie and Luke Jarrad have done in driving attendances. A highlight was our Easter Monday game against Port Adelaide which attracted the largest crowd (4247) seen at Maughan Theim Hyundai Oval in 14 seasons. Unfortunately, 2014 saw a slight drop in paid memberships which highlights the important need to convert passionate supporters into passionate financial members. Our football Department staff, Michael Godden, Trent Hentschel, Shane Grimm and Darren Hams continue to set the standard for football development and are as good a team as we could hope for. No doubt, the hard work that they are doing in developing our future League stars will continue to bear fruit over the coming years. Our Administration staff continue to work tirelessly and with enormous dedication to ensure our Club is successful. I wish to thank all for their passion and commitment throughout 2014. To Kurt Slaven and the Board I say thank you for your leadership and courage throughout 2014. As a Board you have acted diligently and responsibly and have a firm grasp on what needs to be done in the mid-to longterm to ensure the Eagles stay relevant and strong. I look forward to working closely with you in 2015. 2015 will mark the 25th season since the amalgamation of Woodville and West Torrens. A number of major functions will be conducted throughout the year to celebrate our journey. I would urge all Eagles members and supporters to embrace our anniversary and use the opportunity to reflect on our past triumphs and keep and excited eye on our future. Junior Fan Development When I started in this role after the 2009 season, the Eagles had just over 280 members aged under 18, almost half of those comprised of junior players. Some five years later that number is now 2,565 a large majority (2,312) of which are our free Under 13 “Eagle One” members. Overall it is a growth of 495 from last year’s Under 18 figure of 2,070. In addition, we had another 830 Auskickers this season who received a free “Eagle One” membership kit as part of their registration. Furthermore, with boundary changes looming, every junior player aged 13 or under in our country, metro Club or school competitions (Approx. 2,100) received an Eagles player participation pack, for some it was one final contact with the Eagles before the zones changed. A key part of our Club’s Junior Fan Development focus is having strong working relationships with key junior football stakeholders in our zone. They revolve around, Auskick, Junior Metro Club, Primary School and Junior Country football. Due in no small part to the hard work our SANFL Development Officer Nick Harnas, our Metro Auskick numbers again grew by almost 30% in 2014 with a new clinic established at the Fitzroy Football Club. As the Club’s NAB AFL Auskick Manager I enjoyed hosting five clinics at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval this season as our Auskickers participated in an AFL half time game. Once again a range of engagement activities were undertaken, including our junior e-newsletter E2U, home game promotions, player Club visits and hosting the SASFA (Primary School Football) Lightning Carnival. For the first time we also hosted the Metro West Junior Football League U8-U10 Lightning Carnival and their medal count event. Looking forward, after five years we are now at a point where a lot of the Eagle One members will be “graduating” into the Youth Membership category over the next few seasons. Planning has already begun in rebranding and reprioritizing this membership to ensure we see many of these children stay linked to the Club through their teenage years. Community Presence The Eagles remain one of the more proactive SANFL Clubs in getting out within its community and having a presence at local events. Over the past 16 months, through our “Wingspan” voluntary promotions team, the Club again attended many events including McHappy Day (McDonalds), Lockleys Christmas Carols, Christmas at Our Place (City of Charles Sturt), Junior Club Sign-On Days, Uniting Care Christmas Party, Australia Day Henley Square Celebration, Adelaide Plains Football League Grand Final at Two Wells, SA Country Football Championships in Kadina, “Waugh In The West” T20 Cricket Match at St Clair and the Port Adelaide Enfield Twilight Christmas Parade. Our Eagles Community Week home games attracted record numbers both in terms of crowds attending and groups involved. Home Match Crowds After a drop in numbers last year, our home match attendances grew by 8.9% in 2014, our 5th increase in 6 seasons. Relative to the other 8 SANFL Clubs who regularly hosted matches, the Eagles finished 5th ahead of North, South, Central and West. Prior to 2012, the Eagles were always in the bottom three Clubs for home attendances, but in each of the past three seasons we have risen to finish in the middle three Clubs (4th, 6th and 5th), a positive sign for me that relative to other Clubs our support is growing. Our Easter Monday match against Port Adelaide attracted the largest crowd (4,247) seen at Woodville in 14 seasons. A highlight of the year was the hosting of the Metro West Junior Football League Lightning Carnival during Eagles Community Week as a curtain raiser to our second encounter against the Crows. This has led to us having over 600 signed up Eagle One members plus over 500 other members from our previous zone that as members we can still fully promote to and engage with. With links to so many in our old zone retained as signed up members, the focus now changes to promoting the Eagles direct to a new community and new junior football stakeholders. We already have a junior fan development plan and a junior stakeholder partnership template in place that we can transition to our new Clubs, plus we can promote the Club at new community events such as the Port Adelaide Enfield Christmas Twilight Parade. In addition, we will still have opportunities to connect with players in our old zone when they come to Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval for the SASFA Lightning Carnival plus the MWJFL Lightning Carnival, Grand Finals and Medal Count Night. It will be an interesting and at times challenging period, but I strongly believe that the work done already means the Eagles are well placed to adjust successfully to what lies ahead. Thanks I would be remiss if I did not thank the following:• • • All the amazing people at the Eagles including the Board, administration and football staff whom I work with through the season. The wide array of key volunteers, from Wingspan members to those involved in Auskick, junior Clubs and school footy who all contribute to such a vibrant local footy community. SANFL staff including Eagles Development Officer, Nick Harnas and Metropolitan Programs Coordinator Andrew Ainger. Looking Forward The major change for me in 2015 will revolve around our boundary changes. PHIL HERDEN COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER With changes imminent, there was an increased focus this past year on connecting with junior players and attending community events in areas we were likely to lose. Our pre-season was solid and the players we have coming through our Centre of Excellence are starting to understand the opportunities that may come their way if they put in the hard work. We started the year with a loss to Norwood at the Parade, which was then followed by a good win at Elizabeth against Central District. We then lost our next game to West Adelaide by 50 points and then had to sit down and have a close look at areas of our game that we needed to improve. Our next month was very promising winning all 4 games and in 3 of the games we overcame deficits of more than 30 points at half time to run over the top of our opponents to win the game. This was an area of our game that became a strength throughout the remainder of the year with our players having great self-belief that they could win a game from any position if they worked hard enough. We finished the Minor Round in 3rd position with 12 wins and 6 losses and again were matched up to play Norwood in the Qualifying Final. We had played Norwood three times during the season beating them twice but no game had been decided by more than 10 points, so we were expecting another tight tussle. At quarter time we lead by 2 points and the game again looked set to be a close one. We broke the game open in the second term and lead by 21 points at half time and ran out comfortable 43 point winners in the end. Next was North Adelaide who were Minor Premiers for the second straight year. We hadn’t beaten North to this stage but we had gradually improved in each contest. I would have to say that the first half of the game against North was the best football we had played in 2014. Our work rate with and without the ball was outstanding and at half time we lead by 43 points keeping North Adelaide to a solitary goal. We ended up winning the game by 47 points and booked ourselves another Grand Final. We started the Grand Final well against West Adelaide and lead by 19 points at quarter time but we were unable to go on with it for the remaining 3 quarters and were overrun by West to eventually go down by 35 points. Even though it was a disappointing result in the Grand Final, we are starting to build a strong culture and a self-belief within our Centre of Excellence, which I expect will continue to develop League footballers for the Club as well as potential AFL players. Unfortunately we didn’t have anyone drafted in the National Draft but we do have a number of players who will progress through to the senior ranks who I believe will play League football with the Eagles in the near future. I would like to thank and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our small band of officials at Under 18 Level - Alice Gersch, Phil Herraman, Peter Van Vugt, Geof Hughes Andrew Zaccharia and Jennifer Game all provide a professional environment for the players to excel in. Our Coaching staff Darren Hams, Chris Trapp, Brenton Haynes, Daniel Kirk and Troy Ledo all make sure they are doing everything possible to assist the players in achieving their goals. As well as the football operations staff we have at the Club lead by Senior Coach Mick Godden, Football Manager Trent Hentschel and Development Manager Darren Hams, I thank them for their support throughout 2014. I would also like to acknowledge our long time Timekeeper and Official Jamie Vandenberg who sadly passed away on the eve of our Grand Final. Jamie was a passionate Eagles man and a great support to our Centre of Excellence and he will be missed. SHANE GRIMM TALENT MANAGER In 2014 we had 4 players selected in the SA Under 18 squad. A selection trial was held at our last session prior to Xmas and a squad of 36 was selected to represent the Eagles in 2014. Total membership increased by 25, giving us a total of 197 members. The Past Players and Officials held 3 functions at Eagles home matches against Port, Norwood and Sturt. These functions were well attended with increased numbers on the previous year. In all, we averaged over 100 people for each of these functions. A pleasing aspect of these functions is the growth in the number of people attending who have been part of the junior teams in the past. The PP&O remains a fantastic opportunity to catch up with old mates and reminisce on “the glory days”. 2015 will be our 25 anniversary year and what better way to celebrate than to pass the word to others who have not been involved in the past and get them to join, or at least, attend one of the home match functions. We will be hosting a home match function against Sturt in 2015 which will mark our 25th season and all those who have been a part of our journey as a player or official are encouraged to gather and celebrate. Thank you to all involved with running the functions this year, they include Murray Price (Ned Kelly Bakery), Brad Parmiter (SA Brewing), Chook Barratt and Chris Parker (setting up, serving and clearing up at all functions), Melissa McKenzie, Sam Conlon and staff (Game day operations). Thank you for all your continued support and help. Congratulations to the Reserves for clinching back to back flags this year and to the Under 18’s for reaching their third grand final, not quite getting three in a row but a great effort all the same. FINANCIAL REPORT 2014 The 2014 year saw a concerted effort by the CEO, Board and staff to mitigate the significant debt brought about (in part) by the long awaited renovations at Maughan Thiem Oval. The consolidated result at the end of 2014 was a deficit of $715,531. Included in this result are the costs of the sale of Eagles Bar and Bistro of $340,000, bringing the consolidated result to $375,531 for 2014. This work is continuing with a small surplus budgeted for in the 2015 financial year. LICENSED CLUBS Eagles Bar and Bistro Thanks to the continued efforts of Vicki Wright and her staff, the Eagles Bar & Bistro continues to be a major contributor of revenue for the Club. The gaming industry continues to struggle, however Vicki has managed to maintain a fresh and inviting atmosphere and produce results that are better than those of similar venues. As a result the combined revenue for the Bar, Bistro and Gaming has reduced from 2013. However, Vicki and her dedicated staff continue to attract business through seasonal changes of the menu, special offers of wine, combined with a fresh, comfortable and pleasing environment. Maughan Thiem Oval The new venue continues to attract private functions through the hard work of Sam Conlon, Luke Jarrad and Ashleigh Newell. Sam and his staff continue the hard work to create a format that is familiar and pleasing for members and we have seen a number of musicians entertain members throughout the year. We look forward to a continue increase in patronage during 2015. I would like to express my thanks to Michelle Diamond for her hard work and assistance during 2014 and look forward to continuing to work with Michelle during 2015. Thank you also to Melissa McKenzie and Carin Montgomery for all the assistance they provided to me during 2014. CHRISTINE WILLIAMS DIRECTOR EAGLE CLUB INC - FINANCIAL REPORT 2014 45 EAGLES CLUB INC.
