UCSF TAE KWON DO
FORMS
Modified February 25, 2005
UCSF Tae Kwon Do
In tae kwon do, the term forms (also called patterns, or kata) refers to the choreographed
sequences of defensive and offensive techniques performed against imaginary opponents. By
learning and practicing forms, students not only learn the application of various techniques, but
also develop strength, coordination, body awareness, balance, timing, control, and proper
breathing techniques. The UCSF Tae Kwon Do club practices two styles of forms; the
International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) forms, and the Songahm forms of the American
Taekwondo Association (ATA).
There are a total of 24 ITF forms which represent the 24 hours of the day. Each pattern has a
meaning, and with the exception of Don-Ji, all of the patterns are named after important people
or events in Korean history. The diagram in each of the ITF Taekwondo patterns is based upon
traditional Korean ideology, and attempts to match the ideological figure to the meaning of the
form's name. Nine ITF forms are learned for the first black belt.
The ATA has a total of 18 forms. In Songahm Taekwondo, each form builds upon the
techniques learned from the previous form, and each form follows a pattern that begins and ends
in the same place. When the patterns of each form are superimposed on each other, the resulting
diagram is the Songahm Star. Nine ATA forms are learned for the first black belt.

DON-JI Modified version of the ITF form Chon- Ji which literally means " the Heaven
and the Earth". It is, in the Orient, interpreted as the creation of the world or the
beginning of human history, therefore, it is the initial pattern learned by the beginner. This
pattern consists of two similar parts; one to represent the Heaven and the other the Earth.

CHOONG-MOO was the name given to the great Admiral Yi Soon-Sin of the Lee Dynasty.
He was reputed to have invented the first armoured battleship (Kobukson) in 1592, which
is said to be the precursor of the present day submarine. The reason why this pattern ends
with a left hand attack is to symbolize his regrettable death, having no chance to show his
unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king.
