Our Mission: to fight hunger in Central Florida Dear Friends: We set a record for food distribution this past year: 17 million pounds — enough food for approximately 12 million meals. And, yes, that’s just for a six-county area in Central Florida. It truly is a bittersweet statistic: On one hand, it is quite a phenomenal accomplishment; on the other hand, it is a shame we have need to do so. On Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, food is the most basic of all. How is it that so many in our community are at risk of not meeting this basic need? One in four at risk are children . . . one in five are seniors . . . many are disabled . . . over a third are working full-time. During this past year, the economy has taken a downturn. Coupled with the real-estate bust, higher fuel and food costs. Everybody is feeling the increased costs. Those who are on the edge financially are going without meals. Fortunately, amidst all of this, we can make a positive difference in alleviating the adverse effect. We are grateful for the support of the community, because we channel that goodwill into results that make a difference. In the past year, we distributed more nutritious foods than at any other time in history, provided 179,000 meals to children through our Kids Cafes and more than 10,000 children received food “back-packs.” We also reached, on average, 53,900 people per week and benefited from 22,000 hours of volunteer time. Most amazing, we calculated that for every dollar donated, we distributed $9 worth of food. This organization continues to set an industry standard for efficient, cost-effective and responsible charitable hunger-relief in Central Florida. f oo d f o r t h o u g h t . . . Our sincerest thanks go to the food and financial donors, volunteers and our network of 485 partner feeding programs that make all of this possible. It is exciting to be the meeting point for this fine collaboration. We can be proud that we are improving the lives of thousands of people. But we can and will do more in the coming year. Please continue to partner with us to provide hope for a better tomorrow. Dave Krepcho Executive Director This will be achieved by: Christian E. Hart President, Board of Directors Providing access to food and other grocery products in order to meet the need. Promoting and supporting the development of our partner agencies' ability to fulfill their missions. Mobilizing leaders and communities by bringing visibility to the invisible problem of hunger and poverty. Developing more holistic and county-specific solutions to hunger in the Central Florida region. In fiscal 2006/2007, our organization distributed 17,O5O,767 lbs. of food food distribution PRESIDENT / Christian Hart EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT / Matt Beal Our Branches Community Food Drives Since 1997, the Volusia Branch of the Second Harvest Food Bank has been providing food to more than 80 non-profit organizations serving people in need. An amazing 1,035,635 pounds of nonperishable grocery products were collected in fiscal 2006/2007 through our Community Food Drives: In fiscal year 2006/2007, the Volusia Branch provided 2,009,172 pounds of food — the equivalent of 1,648,014 meals. • Boy Scouts of America/Scouting for Food • National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive • WESH News Channel 2 Share Your Christmas • CANstruction • Local church, school & workplace drives Founded in 2000, the Brevard Branch distributed the equivalent of 1,106,518 meals (1,697,421 pounds total) to more than 80 non-profit organizations during fiscal year 2006/2007. Volunteers In fiscal year 2006/2007, 6,322 volunteers contributed 22,938 hours — the equivalent of more than 11 full-time staff members! Without this incredible human resource, the Second Harvest Food Bank could not begin to have the impact on hunger that our community needs. General Food Distribution Products donated by manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, growers, and others are distributed to emergency food pantries, shelters, and other types of agencies serving needy clients. This program distributed 7,161,459 pounds of nutritious food in fiscal 2006/2007. In addition, 364,842 pounds of food were provided for disaster relief efforts. Second Helpings This prepared and perishable food program collected and distributed 892,010 pounds of food in fiscal 2006/2007 to agencies that provide on-site meals for senior citizens, shelters, soup kitchens and non-profit kids programs. 2006/2007 Board of Directors: VICE PRESIDENT / Jean Bauman TREASURER / Sherri Avara SECRETARY / Susan Reimer-Sifford HONORARY LIFE MEMBER / Patricia Ambinder Kids Cafe At 15 meal sites, 132,993 meals were distributed in fiscal 2006/2007. Over 530 children are served meals daily. TEFAP Distribution The Florida Department of Agriculture awarded distribution contracts for Orange, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, Volusia and Marion counties to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for its distribution program of government food commodities. In fiscal year 2006/2007, a total of 4,081,046 pounds of these wholesome products were made available to Central Floridians in need. ADEPT Since the inception of the Agency Development, Education and Partnership Training (ADEPT) program in 2006, over 700 staff and volunteers from our six-county span of partner agencies have attended more than 50 classes. The topics range from grant writing, safe food handling and nutrition, to volunteer management. Through community partnerships with Florida Hospital and the University of Central Florida, among others, the ADEPT program continues to diversify our class offerings — and looks to our partner agencies and the community to b e c a u s e n o o n e s h o u l d h u n g r y Directors: Second Harvest Food Bank remains committed to collecting donated food and distributing it to more than 485 partner non-profit agencies. serving people in need b e Kari D.
