Community Activist Passes
Community
activist
and
longtime Woodland Hills resident
Gloria Mogul passed away
October 6. Mogul was a silent
force behind many projects in the
west valley for over 35 years. She
is best known for her Community
Cleanup - seen walking Ventura
Blvd. with her beloved husband
Marlowe, organizing cleanup and
graffiti removal. She organized
Gloria Mogul
a community cleanup day in
Woodland Hills every September that brought together
several hundred volunteers. She pioneered the Woodland
Hills Chamber Cleanup by enlisting Chaminade students
and at risk youth volunteers for service hours and a sense
of belonging to a community. The Moguls set up the Andrea
Mogul Scholarship fund for Taft High School students and
would present it annually at the Rotary Club of Woodland
Hills. Services were held earlier this week.
Jerry’s Woodland Hills Closing
Jerry’s Deli will close their Woodland Hills restaurant
this Sunday, October 16. According to spokesman Ami
Saffron, the new owner of the Gateway Shopping Center
continued to raise the rent. “We tried to work with the new
landlord but were unsuccessful,” he said. ROIC bought the
center from Calabasas resident Stan Weiss several years ago.
“They paid big money for the center,” said Saffron, “and that
affected the triple net.” He said that the company is taking
multiple Woodland Hills employees to their other restaurants
in Marina del Rey, Studio City and Encino. “We love the
area. If we could find a space in the 5,000 square foot range in
Woodland Hills we would move back,” Saffron added.
Local Group Arrested
for Mortgage Fraud
A Woodland Hills resident was arrested as a result of
an investigation into a identity theft and mortgage fraud
ring. Aramais Airapetian, 24, was charged with using
fraudulent documents, including fake pay stubs and
bank statements, to obtain a mortgage. He was the 11th
person charged in the large-scale identity theft scheme
that laundered $14 million using fake Republic of Armenia
passports. IRS Criminal Investigation agents posted a
forfeiture notice on a Woodland Hills home that it believes
was purchased using the laundered funds. In total four
homes in the valley valued at over $1 million were sued in a
civil asset forfeiture lawsuit as a result of the investigation.
Master pumpkin carver Doug Goodreau will showcase his creations at the Festival.
Pumpkin Festival Rolls Into Calabasas
The name “Calabasas”
reportedly comes from the old
Indian word “Calabeza,” which
means gourd or pumpkin.
Every year the venerable
pumpkin is celebrated with
a festival, taking place this
weekend, October 15 and 16 at
Juan Bautista de Anza Park.
The first Pumpkin Festival
was founded in the early 1970’s
by Rodger Sterling, then President
of the Calabasas Chamber of
Commerce and former Editor of
this paper.
The festival has since
been produced by the Calabasas
Chamber and the City of Calabasas.
For more than 40 years
the festival has brought the
community together for two days
of fun themed around pumpkins.
There will be live bands, a DJ
dance zone, marketplace, vendors,
face painting and more.
Professional
pumpkin
carver and regular festival
participant Doug Goodreau will
demonstrate and sell his colorful
and inventive creations.
There will be all sorts of
food and pumpkin treats, pumpkin
beer and pumpkin pie sold by the
Calabasas Rotary Club.
On Saturday at 10 am there
will be a Tiny Tots Parade for
those six and under. If they come
in costume there is no admission
charge. The parade will wind
through the festival and end
at the Main Stage where prizes
will be awarded by the Mayor
of Calabasas and Calabasas City
Council members.
The $5 admission (those
under two are free) will include
inflatable rides, carnival games, a
safari train ride, a Pinewood Derby
race, mummy wrap contests, kids
arts and crafts and a car show.
The contest stage will
feature a kids’ pumpkin pie eating
contest, an adult contest, a kids
mummy wrap contest and a parent
and me mummy wrap contest.
Purchase pumpkin items at
the marketplace, and pick your own
pumpkin from the Pumpkin Patch.
Enter and park for free at
the corner of Lost Hills Road and
Agoura Road. (There will be no
parking on Las Virgenes - Malibu
Canyon). Take the free shuttles
to the festival. Dogs are allowed
at the festival on a leash but not
allowed on the shuttles.
For more information and a
full schedule of all events call the
Calabasas Chamber at 222-5680.

They’re nice as pie! Community member Costco donated pumpkin
pies to the Rotary Club of Calabasas for their booth at the Pumpkin
Festival this weekend. Proceeds from the pumpkin pie sales will fund
Rotary projects in the local area. “Costco is proud to partner with the
Rotary Club of Calabasas. We are big fans of the Calabasas Pumpkin
Festival and we’re very excited that we have the chance to contribute
to this outstanding community event,” Warehouse Manager Bob
Holden told Valley News Group. Celebrating their one year anniversary
in Woodland Hills, Costco has given back to the community and
partnered with many local organizations, including United Way, the
Walk of Hearts, the Children’s Miracle Network, a reading program at
a local school and an elementary school field trip to the store. Shown
above is Bob Holden with baker Alyssa Kelly.
Charlie Kim, left, has taken
the reins as Artistic Director of the
San Fernando Valley Master Chorale.
Maestro Terry Danne is retiring after
17 years of leading the award-winning
chorale. Kim is an accomplished

Word on the Street
• WE ARE IN TROUBLE....
The population of this country is 300 million.
160 million are retired.
That leaves 140 million to do the work.
There are 85 million in school.
Which leaves 55 million to do the work.
Of this there are 35 million employed by the federal government.
Leaving 20 million to do the work.
2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing
terrorists!!
Which leaves 17.2 million to do the work.
Take from that total the 15.8 million people who work for state
and city governments. And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals.
Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to do the work.
You and me.
And there you are,
Sitting on your ass,
At your desk, reading jokes...
Nice. Real nice.
• Sharona Saltzman sent in this pearl from the late Steve Jobs:
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other
people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out
your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow
your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly
want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
• Frank Dane said it: “Get all the fools on your side and you can get
elected to anything.”
• I love these kinds of stories. Seems a salesman called his wife
from a coin-operated phone in a distant city, said good bye and replaced
the receiver. As he was walking away the phone rang. Thinking he was
going to be informed of extra charges he picked up. But the operator
said,” I thought you’d like to know. Just after you hung up, your wife
said ‘I love you.’”
• Talk about holy water! We saw a sign on a truck around town:
Jesus Mobile Car Wash.
• Reminds me of the one we pass up near Big Bear - Deer Lick Car
Wash. It takes a lot longer but those deer do a thorough job!
• Do you know that human hair is virtually impossible to destroy.
It decays so slowly after death it is practically non-disintigrative. Cold,
climate changes, water and other natural forces can’t destroy it, nether can
many kinds of acids and corrosive chemicals. The mummies are proof!
• Speaking of mummies...didja’ hear about the mummy who went
into the local bar to unwind?

Rodger Sterling was dedicated to promoting all
things Calabasas. When he bought the Las Virgenes
Enterprise in the early 70’s, he immediately joined
the Calabasas Chamber, reinvented their newsletter,
named “Noose Notes” for the old hanging tree on
Calabasas Road, and quickly became Chamber
President - twice.
In 1972 he founded the first Pumpkin Festival.
He had help from his buddy Bob McCord, who
owned the Sagebrush Cantina, and Dale Lambert, a
local resident and electrician.
The festival was held in the heart of Old
Town Calabasas, right on
Calabasas Road, in front of the
little shopping mall that housed
an antique mart, a jewelry store,
and the fledging Sagebrush
Cantina, then just a small
storefront.
Calabasas at that time
wasn’t the celebrity haven
it is today. The main road
boasted a gas station, Howards
Johnson’s (now Lovi’s) and
the old Kramer Store, which
was a bar called “Alias Smith
and Jones.” The Leonis Adobe
sat across from an old original
Calabasas homestead, which
was recently the site of the
Calabasas Chamber office. That
house was the office of the Las
Virgenes Enterprise, which
had a fireplace where the staff
burned papers in the winter to
keep warm. Residents still rode
horses along Calabasas Road,
and brought several to the first
Pumpkin Festival.
The
festival
sold
pumpkins garnered from a
pumpkin farm that ran along the edge of Las Virgenes
Road. Beer was sold in kegs stored in big bins in
front of the Sagebrush, and turkey legs and other
food items were cooked and sold on site. Banners
proclaiming the Pumpkin Festival were strung
across Calabasas
Road
from
the Cantina to
the newspaper
office.Local
merchants and
artisans
from
Craftsman
Road across the
freeway sold handmade items. Macramé and collage
were big at the time, as was the pottery of local
potter John Schulps.
Everything was local - from
the pumpkins to the people.
Rodger’s favorite newspaper
saying was always “lousy
local is better than wonderful
wire.” He promoted all local
news, events, and people. The
paper flourished for decades,
and then Rodger sold it to
the Hearst Corporation and
retired. Unfortunately they
didn’t have a handle on the
local angle, and their grand
gesture of purchasing 28
local weeklies bombed. They
folded the Enterprise along
with almost all of the other 28.
In the late 80’s, when
Rodger and I had married,
we restarted the Enterprise as
a companion to the Warner
Center News and Valley
Vantage. We returned to all
local news of the turf, and
were surprised many people
commented
how
they’d
“missed a few issues.”
More like a few years, but
today I’m proud to be promoting and supporting the
Pumpkin Festival this weekend, and continuing the
grand tradition that Rodger started way back when.

Proposition 65: Environmental Fee Protection Act
Props 65 and 67 can get confusing. California banned single, plastic
bag use two years ago, but a referendum put that ban on hold, unless
you happen to live in a municipality where that ban is enforced.
Prop 65 would allocate funds generated from the sale of carryout bags to the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB). Retailers who
sell bags would deposit the proceeds to the fund, potentially tens of
millions of dollars, to support specific environmental programs.
Who’s for Prop 65?
Certain groups supporting this initiative claim retailers make a $300
million annual profit on the reusable bags they sell to consumers, and
that these profits should be redirected to beach cleanup, litter removal,
etc. Since the single-use plastic bag has been banned in most cities,
supporters argue that any profits from consumers forced to buy bags
should go to environmental causes, particularly if Prop 67 (see below)
is passed.
This initiative is actually supported by bag manufacturers, according
to KCET, but…a San Francisco Chronicle opinion piece claims bag
manufacturers are attempting to confuse voters by putting both Prop
65 and Prop 67 on the state ballot. Prop 65 also seems to be supported
by the California Taxpayer Protection Committee and the California
Senior Advocates League.
Who’s Against Prop 65?
California’s grocer association claims the 10 cent per single-use bag
charge barely covers their costs of providing the bags, according to the
Chronicle piece linked above. Additionally, opponents of Prop 65 say
the better choice is to vote yes on Prop 67 instead.
Proposition 66: Death Penalty Reform and Savings Act of 2016
Prop 66 aims to overhaul the system of capital punishment in
California rather than repeal it, by incorporating procedural changes
in the appeals process; requiring criminal appellate attorneys to take
on death penalty appeals cases (many currently don’t); and requiring
death row inmates to pay restitution to victims’ families.
Who’s For Prop 66?
Again, the Mend, Don’t End group is a primary supporter of 66
(see opponents of 62 above). Several district attorneys have come
out with opinion pieces supporting 66, including this one by Michael

News from The Music Center
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman
The
American
theatre
community joins the Center
Theatre Group (Ahmanson, Taper
and Kirk Douglas Theatres) in
mourning the loss of Gordon
Davidson who passed away on
Sunday October 2.
From 1967 to 2005 Davidson
was the Artistic Director of Center
Theatre
Group/Mark
Taper
Forum at the Music Center of Los
Angeles. In addition to his role at
the Taper, he was also Producing
Director of the Center Theatre
Group/Ahmanson Theatre for 15
years and the Artistic Director of
the inaugural season (2004-2005)
at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. A
pillar in the Los Angeles theatre
community, he not only redefined
theatre in Southern California,
he was one of the founders of
the regional theatre movement
which has had a permanent
impact on theatre throughout
the country and the world,
.
Michael Ritchie, the current
Center Theatre Group Artistic
Director,
described
Gordon
Davidson as “one of the most
renowned and respected artistic
directors in regional theatre, in
large part because he was one of
the original founders of the entire
concept. He led Center Theatre
Group for 38 years and produced
one of the broadest arrays of plays,
particularly new plays, of any
theatre in the country. Without
his prolific vision for Center
Theatre Group 50 years ago,
the theatrical landscape in Los
Angeles, and the country, would
be very different. He remains
one of theatre’s great leaders and
I was proud to call him a mentor,
friend and colleague.”
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”
Gordon Davidson received
countless awards, from the Tony
to his induction to the Theatre
Hall of Fame on Broadway in
2000. He is survived by his wife
Judi, their children Adam and
Rachel and five granddaughters,
******
The current production at
the Mark Taper Forum is August
Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black
The late Gordon Davidson.
Bottom,” starring Lillias White
in the title role. The play is part
of a series of plays written by
Wilson that explores the AfricanAmerican experience, decade
by decade, during the course
of the 20th century. The story
takes place in the band room
and recording studios of a record
company in Chicago early in
March,1927.
Rainey, born in Georgia in
1886, is considered the Mother of
the Blues. As the play, directed
by Phylicia Rashad, unfolds
we see how she and other black
performers were exploited by
record companies during that
time period. While the story is
laced with comedic moments,
potential tragedy lurks just
beneath the surface. Keith David
plays one of Rainey’s four backup
musicians, and each actor in the
group plays an instrument and
sings throughout. At the Mark
Taper Forum, 135 N, Grand Ave,
Los Angeles. Ends October 16.
The next play at the Taper
will be “The Beauty Queen Of
Leenane,” Nov. 9 - Dec. 18.
*******
Arthur Miller’s classic “A
View From The Bridge,” at the
Ahmanson Theatre through
Oct.16, is directed by Tony Award
winner Ivo van Hove. His stylized
revival of Miller’s play was a hit
in London, and went on to win a
Tony for Best Revival this year.
The set is sparse, with the main
focus not on the surroundings, but
on the actors. Another interesting
aspect of this production is having
a portion of the audience seated
on stage, serving as witnesses to
what is about to unfold. Very well
done, but the audience experience
might have been even better
served if this intimate intense
drama had been presented at the
Mark Taper Forum rather than at
the larger, 2,000 seat Ahmanson.
“Amelie, A New Musical”
will be the next production at
the Ahmanson from Dec. 4,
2016 through Jan. 17, 2017.
Tickets for each of these
fine productions are available by
calling (213) 972-4400 or online
at www.centertheatregroup.com.

annual Halloween Family Faire
on Saturday, October 29, from
10 am to 5 pm at Warner Center
Park .
Hosted in conjunction with
Valley Cultural Center and West
Valley – Warner Center Chamber
of Commerce, the faire will offer
free admission and parking,
and feature a variety of fun
activities for children of all ages
including: pumpkin painting, face
painting, a costume parade and
contest, games, bounce houses,
arts and crafts, exhibitors, food
trucks, entertainment and more.
Funds raised through the
faire will support a new volunteerdriven RotaCare Clinic staffed by
medical personnel from leading
local hospitals, which will provide
needed healthcare services and
treatment to residents. The Clinic
will be funded solely through
compassionate and generous
donations.
“We are thrilled to offer
this new gathering space for
local families during one of the
most entertaining and spookiest
events of the year,” said Diane
Nelson, President of the Rotary
Club of Woodland Hills. “By
participating in this event, local
residents will not only enjoy a
fun Halloween experience, but
will also contribute to the many
causes supported by Rotary, and
in particular the Valley’s first
RotaCare Clinic, which will
provide free and low-cost medical
care to underserved families and
those without medical insurance,”
added Nelson.
Since 1956, the Rotary
Club of Woodland Hills has
served the community through
its commitment to service above
self. Over the years, its cadre
of hundreds of volunteers and
donors has provided continuous
support and resources to
countless local schools, and
nonprofit organizations serving
youth, families, the elderly,
disabled, and animals. The Club
also contributes to initiatives
that have an impact on the
quality of life of individuals
locally and around the world.
Recipients of Rotary support
include: the Pacific Lodge
Boys Home (foster youth), the
Department of Children and
Family Services, Fullbright
Elementary School, Reseda
Elementary School, Serrania
Elementary School, Taft High
School, El Camino High School,
Pierce College, San Fernando
Valley
Rescue
Mission,
Rotaplast (international medical
missions), Rotary Club of India
mammogram mobile, and many
others.
“For the last 10 years,
the Rotary Club of Woodland
Hills has been a great support
to our school community,” said
Rosemarie Kubena, Principal
at Reseda Elementary School.
“They’ve helped students with
tutoring, contributed to health
resources, supported parents by
enabling them to be proactive
when it comes to their children’s
education,
and
provided
opportunities to our families
that they would otherwise not
be able to attain. This is a big
deal. It’s really powerful for
these families,” added Kubena.

Opponents to 66 include
several state organizations:
Democratic and Libertarian

Catholic Conference, etc. Various
prominent elected officials and
individuals also oppose 66.

Buying or Selling...We Make Your Dreams Come True!
Do We Still Have to
Save Water?
By David W. Pederson
Las Virgenes Municipal Water
District personnel are often asked,
“Do we still have to save water?”
October marked the start of a
new “water year” and as we enter
a sixth year of drought, we’re all
entitled to a feel a little “drought
fatigue.” But most people know
the answer to that question before
it’s asked. So yes, we need to
continue our good conservation
habits, because California’s dry
weather pattern shows no signs
of change.
All in all, Las Virgenes
Municipal
Water
District
customers have done an excellent
job at conservation. September
was warm and dry, yet usage
was still 20% below the state’s
2013 baseline. While that’s
Wasteful practices
invite mandatory
reduction goals,
which none of us
want to see...
somewhat lower than last year’s
conservation figure during the
declared “water emergency”, it’s
still significant and appropriately
reflects the shift in focus from
emergency conservation to longterm water use efficiency.
Given that our service area
is entirely dependent upon
imported water, we have an
enduring responsibility to use
water wisely and efficiently. Your
efforts have made a difference
and, combined with last year’s
rain that replenished Northern
California’s reservoirs, we’ve
taken the opportunity to move
away from strictly enforced
watering restrictions to a more
flexible “water budget” program
that lets customers actively
manage their month-to-month
water usage.
No one knows what the
coming winter will bring for the
state’s water supply. However,
we do know that “smart”
conservation is the prudent
response to prolonged drought.
Wasteful practices invite the
state to once again impose
mandatory
reduction
goals,
which none of us want to see.
So LVMWD will continue
to promote greater water use
efficiency through “reminder”
ads, garden and landscape classes
and rebates on water-efficient
devices. Our website, customer
newsletter, education programs,
outreach booths at community
events
and
social
media
postings all serve to encourage
homeowners to maintain the good
habits they’ve adopted and make
conservation a California way of
life.
Thank you for your help in
managing our precious water
resources.

When Your Drug Gets Dropped
By Janey M. Rifkin
I hear this a lot: “My
prescription medication that
I depend upon is no longer
available. Why did my drugmaker discontinue producing
the product, or my (insurance)
coverage lapse?”
As for big-pharma, when
generics infringe on their
share of the marketplace, or
their patent for the product
lapses, they may either take it
off the market, or reintroduce
the formula for another health
purpose (if such is approved).
Insurance cases of dropping
members’ coverage are more
involved and more common.
Generally insurers are permitted
to add, drop, or change the tier
(your share of the cost) – of
a prescription drug any time.
And they do. A recent study of
81 health plans sold through
state and federal marketplaces
show at least half had changed
their formularies (the list of
meds that are covered by the
plan) at their discretion over
the course of a plan year.
In fact, after trips to two
different pharmacies, having

Ask
your
doctor
about a substitute medication;
one that is just as effective
and safe for your condition.
2. When no appropriate
alternative is available through
the formulary, your doctor can ask
your insurance provider to cover
another approved drug because
it is medically necessary. That is
known as “prior authorization.”
3. Shop around. You can
still pare your costs. Prescription
prices can vary widely from one
pharmacy to the next, even in the
same zip code. Costco often offers
low drug prices (membership
not required), and you may be
able to negotiate at independent
pharmacies. Remember also that
some chains and big-box stores
offer hundreds of generics for as
low as $4 for a 30-day supply
and $10 for a 90-day supply.
