Loth, who coaches the quarterbacks, holds the best winning percentage among football coaches with more than three seasons at Otterbein. “Finally, Loth said, “we try to organize our program and prepare our players to ensure we accomplish our goals of recruiting, retaining and developing our players.” Loth began his football career as a graduate assistant at Southern Methodist University (1991-93). He served as defensive coordinator at NCAA Division III schools Western Connecticut State University (1993-97) and Capital University (1997-98). Loth spent two seasons as defensive secondary coach at the University of Rhode Island (1998-00) before accepting his first head coaching job at Kean in February 2000. In the summer of 2009, Loth worked with the wide receivers as a guest coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who advanced to the 2009 Grey Cup in the Canadian Football League. The Cardinals, 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) last season, set a school record for wins in 2008. Otterbein, 9-2 overall and 8-1 in the OAC, advanced into the 2008 NCAA Division III Football Championship for the first time in school history. Otterbein’s lone conference loss that year came at the hands of NCAA Division III champion Mount Union. Loth was named “OAC Football Coach of the Year” for the second time in his career. Loth was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at defensive back as an undergraduate at Otterbein. He earned second team All-OAC honors his senior year in 1990 and still holds the Otterbein career record of 13 interceptions. He received his bachelor’s degree in business. In 2006, Loth was inducted into the Riverside High School Hall of Fame in Painesville, Ohio. Loth, a 1991 Otterbein graduate, returned to his alma mater in 2003 after serving three seasons as head football coach at Kean University. The Painesville, Ohio, native has taken part in rebuilding programs throughout his 18-year coaching career. Coach Loth and his wife, Keri, have two sons, Zachary, 10, and Tyler, 8. When coming to Otterbein, Loth inherited a program that had just one winning season in the previous 21 seasons. In just seven short years, Loth has guided the Cardinals into the upper half of the tough OAC in four of the past five seasons, compiling a 33-18 mark over that time period. At Kean, Loth inherited a program riding a 16-game losing streak. In Loth’s final season, Kean posted its best record in eight years. The Cardinals, under Loth, turned the corner in 2005, finishing the year 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the OAC for their first winning season since 1999 and only their second since 1982. Included in the win column—a 17-14 decision over cross-town rival Capital—who made the NCAA Division III playoffs. Loth was selected “OAC Football Coach of the Year” by his peers. At Otterbein, the 43-year-old coach has assembled a coaching staff that, including himself, features four former Cardinals. “If you look at the great NCAA Division III programs and the staffs they have, most of their coaches have gone through their program,” Loth said. “I think that’s important.” Loth and his staff have employed a four-step approach in raising the success of Otterbein football. “The first step is to recruit,” Loth said. “We want to recruit as well as anyone in the OAC. The second is retain our studentathletes. It is not always how many student-athletes you bring to campus, it is how many student-athletes you have retained. Thirdly, we look to develop our players mentally and physically, and create a great feeling of team. 4 Assistant Coaches TIM DOUP (Otterbein ’92) Tim Doup begins his eighth season as an assistant at his alma mater, serving as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Doup was named “OAC Assistant Coach of the Year” in 2008, putting together a potent offense that averaged 380 yards and 39 points a game. Coach Doup returned to Otterbein in 2003 following a successful career at Upper Arlington (OH) High School. Over the course of his eight-year stint as an assistant football coach there, Upper Arlington won five conference championships (1997-2000 and 2002), advancing to the Division I State Final Four in 1997, 1998 and 2000. The new $3.2 million grandstand, built on the same site of old Memorial Stadium, was dedicated on Sept. 17, 2006 shortly before Otterbein defeated cross-town rival Capital, 17-14, by scoring twice on its last two possessions of the game. The new grandstand was financed through private funds, raised through the Clements Foundation and the Otterbein “O” Club, both long-time contributors to athletics and other academic programs at Otterbein. The new grandstand, with handicap access, seats 2,400, including a section in the middle with 500 stadium chairs, and a press box with elevator. The stadium also features stateof-the-art locker rooms, a training room, equipment room, and “O” Club room. Other recent improvements to Memorial Stadium include a new lighting system, courtesy of Cellular One, in 1996, and renovation of the outdoor track and field facilities in 1988 through a donation from the late Dorothy McVay, from Westerville. In 1989, the gridiron was named in honor of Dwight “Smokey” Ballenger, a 1939 graduate of Otterbein. Over the last four years, Otterbein has added the Clements Recreational and Fitness Center, a new softball field, and new tennis courts; and an upgrade of the baseball field. “With the addition of the new stadium, we have one of the best athletics complexes in the conference,” said Bob Gatti, Otterbein Vice President for Student Affairs. The Frank and Vida Clements Recreation and Fitness Center opened in the fall of 2002. The $9.5 million center enhances the curriculum and clinical experiences for students preparing for careers in health, fitness and athletic training. In addition, the center significantly increases the facilities for the athletic training, sport management, and health and fitness programs; increases the health, wellness and recreation programs for students, faculty and staff; enhances Otterbein’s capacity to attract future students; and expands the opportunities for partnership with the wider Columbus community. The center has two components: a 75,000 square-foot field house, complete with a sanctioned six-lane, 200-meter indoor track; and a two-story connector to the existing Rike Center, which features a high-tech cardiovascular fitness area, fullyequipped training and rehabilitation center, coaching offices, classrooms and a student lounge area. from Robert Corbin ’49, Tom Weisenstein and the Fishbaugh Memorial Fund. Additional sports facilities at Otterbein include tennis courts, and separate fields for softball, baseball and soccer. A 2.5-mile cross country course, which meanders Alum Creek and traverses woods and farmland, opened in the fall of 1995. Gifts from the Otterbein alumni and friends have helped provide educational opportunities through athletics for sports-minded students. Former student-athletes have continued their success in coaching, teaching, recreational and professional fields-evidence of quality educational experiences offered at Otterbein College. Built in 1974, the Rike Center houses physical education facilities and offices. The domed roof encloses an intercollegiate hardwood basketball floor with seating for 3,100; equipped weight training room; two handball courts; and locker rooms for varsity teams and physical education classes. Conventional classrooms and offices are located on the perimeter. A $300,000 gift from the Rike family of Dayton inaugurated the capital campaign to finance construction of the Rike Center, which was built for about $1.5 million. In the spring of 2008, an $84,000 weight room was installed in the Rike Center, providing new flooring, free weights and equipment for use by student-athletes, students and staff. The project was spearheaded by the “O” Club with support 18 Otterbein College Football Roster Upperclassmen Name Letters Levi Albrecht Adam Anderson Michael Angle 2 Matt Ashworth Nick Bachelder 2 Quintin Beck 2 Jake Benko 1 Jordan Benson Luke Boucher Josh Bowling 2 David Brewer 2 Will Brown 1 Brock Burzanko Jon Busby Charlie Cahill Matthew Cantrell Kevin Castle Shane Centers 1 Cameron Change Ryan Clark Brian Collins Kenny Collmar 2 Colton Coy 3 Wade D'andrea Pat Daugherty B.J. The Cardinals, ranked 24th in Lindy’s preseason poll, return 49 lettermen, including seven starters on offense and six on defense, from last season’s 8-2 squad that finished with a share of second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) with a 7-2 record. Head coach Joe Loth, in his eighth season at his alma mater, said the team’s strengths in 2010 will be its offensive and defensive lines, and offensive backfield. The Cardinals return four of five starters on the offensive line, including second team All-OAC senior guard Matt Hochberg. Otterbein led the league in rushing last season, averaging 222 yards a game. “We’re going to start four seniors and one junior, and they have a lot of experience,” Loth said about the offensive line. “I think it is the best offensive line we’ve had since I’ve been here as head coach.” Joining Hochberg on the offensive line will be returning starters Kenny Collmar, a senior tackle, Kevin Murphy, a junior tackle, Arnold Spikes, a senior guard, and Kasey Fifer, a senior guard who started one game last season. Others expected to see playing time on the offensive line are juniors Nick Houk and Shayne Willis, and sophomore Jon Busby. The center spot, vacated by the graduation of Sam Watson, will be settled in preseason camp. With such an experienced and quality line, the Cardinals should continue to move the ball effectively on the ground especially with the return of senior running back Colton Coy, a twotime first team All-OAC selection, and junior quarterback Austin Schlosser, who took over the starting role in game three last season due to an injury to 2008 Gagliardi Trophy finalist Jack Rafferty. Coy rushed for 1,013 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2009, becoming only the second running back to go over the 1,000-yard mark in Otterbein history. Schlosser threw for 1,363 yards and 12 touchdowns, and rushed for 304 yards and seven touchdowns. The versatile quarterback finished with a 164.15 pass-efficiency rating, which ranked him eighth in NCAA D-III. No doubt, the Cardinals will lean heavily on their ground attack—at least early in the season—since Otterbein lost its top four receivers from a year ago. “That is the question mark on offense, but what is exciting is that we have a lot of guys who have been waiting two or three years behind some good receivers for their turn to play,” Loth said. “We think we have some talented guys out there.” Players in the running for playing time at wide receiver include seniors Kevin Rybka and Steve Kuzyk, junior Joe Reed, and sophomore Fortinel Faustin. Junior Gabe Shively and sophomore Kiefer Hinkle are expected to play tight end. Just like on offense, Otterbein’s greatest strength on defense should be its defensive line, according to Loth. “We are talented, more talented on the defensive side than on the offensive side, and we’re pretty talented on offense,” Loth said. “I think the area of concern is that we will have a couple of new players in the mix and it might take time to gel together.” Senior defensive end Chaz Horsley, a second team All-OAC selection last season, is expected to anchor the defensive unit. Horsley, with 49 tackles, led Otterbein in tackles for a loss, 9.5, and pass sacks, 4.5, last season. He ranked seventh in the OAC for pass sacks. Expected to join Horsley on the defensive line are returning starters Joe Whitehead, a sophomore tackle, and Will Brown, a senior end, who missed 2009 due to a preseason injury. Whitehead made 21 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss of five yards, as a freshman. Brown tallied 23 stops, including 3.5 pass sacks, in 2008. Senior Josh Bowling gets the nod to fill the other tackle position. Other players who could see time on the line include junior Josh McCaskey and sophomore B.J. Douglas. The Cardinals should get a boost at the linebacker position with the return of senior Wil Longsdorf, who missed 2009 because of an injury suffered in the season opener. Longsdorf was Otterbein’s third-leading tackler as a starter in 2008, making 59 stops, including 25 unassisted. Junior Shane Centers and senior Joe Overbee should also factor in at linebacker this season. Starters returning to the defensive backfield include senior strong safety Justin Hochstetler and junior cornerback Matt Ross. Hochstetler tallied 36 tackles while Ross chipped in 16 stops in 2009. Vying for starting roles in the defensive backfield are Anthony Korpieski, a senior who earned honorable mention AllOAC honors as a return specialist last season, junior Anthony Lovelace, and senior Chris Roby. Others who could factor in as well include junior Elliott Glass, and sophomores Jordan Benson and Chad Warner. In addition to return specialist Korpieski, senior punter/ place-kicker David Brewer also returns to the special teams unit. Brewer hit 5 of 8 field-goal attempts and 35 of 37 extra-point attempts, and averaged 37 yards a punt last season. Korpieski averaged 8.2 yards on punt returns and 24.9 yards on kick returns. With back-to-back seasons of 9-2 and 8-2, Loth has the Otterbein football program pointed in the right direction. “What we are excited about now is that we were 8-2 last year and we were disappointed,” Loth said. “Our goals and expectations are so high now. We’re to the point where we are playing and starting juniors and seniors, and that means guys are waiting to play, seeing what it takes to win and be successful in this league.” Otterbein opens the new season Sept. 3 at Husson College in Bangor, Maine. WOCC-TV 3 Mark Pfeiffer Sports Director Instructional Media Center Westerville, Ohio 43081 (614) 823-1563 The Ohio Athletic Conference Commissioner: Timothy W. Gleason Information Dir.: Lindsay Rickel The 2009-10 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount Union football program completed its fourth straight undefeated regular-season, while making its 13th overall Stagg Bowl appearance. The Ohio Northern volleyball team made its tenth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, with a stop in regional finals. The ONU volleyball program also recorded its 33rd straight winning season. The Otterbein women’s soccer team advanced the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. Wilmington’s Callen Martin won the indoor 55-meter dash national title (6.98). Martin also became just the third NCAA Division III woman to run a sub-seven second 55-meter dash. Ohio Northern’s Luke Miller claimed the national title in the 157-pound weight class. The Mount Union women’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Championship. The Heidelberg baseball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III World series, while the Ohio Northern softball team advanced to the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament. Individually, the Conference was represented by over 60 All-Americans. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and national coaching honors. The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a Mailing Address: P. O. Box 4656 Austintown, Ohio 44515 Supervisor of Officials: Larry Glass Admin. Ass't.: Winnie Trotter modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school on July 1, 2000. In the OAC’s first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference champion was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The Conference currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.
