Het Redhead Days festival groeit en
bloeit. Je kan dit jaar uit enorm veel
activiteiten kiezen, waaronder
natuurlijk de vertrouwde grote
groepsfoto in het park en de
expositie in de Grote Kerk. Dit jaar
is extra bijzonder; we bestaan
namelijk tien jaar! En dat vieren we
ook met een speciaal thema:
Vincent van Gogh. In 2015 is het
precies 125 jaar geleden dat de
wereldberoemde roodharige
Nederlandse schilder is gestorven.
2015 is ook het landelijke Vincent
van Gogh jaar.
De Van Gogh specials tijdens de
Redhead Days variëren van
portrettekenen tot exposities,
bezoeken aan het Van Gogh huis in
Zundert en het bloemencorso in
Zundert dat dit jaar natuurlijk ook
in het teken van Vincent van Gogh
staat. Kijk op onze speciale Van
Gogh pagina’s voor alle info. Daar
vind je ook een overzicht van
exposities en activiteiten van
anderen, zoals musea en culturele
instellingen.
Het festival begon tien jaar geleden
als het idee van één persoon en kijk
waar we nu staan; Redhead Days
wordt inmiddels door meer dan 70
vrijwilligers georganiseerd. Al deze
organisatoren en ook de sponsoren,
crowdfunders, artiesten, en
iedereen die meehelpt aan het
evenement streven naar een
geweldige ervaring speciaal voor…
jou. En hier ben ik trots op. Trots op
al deze mensen en misschien nog
wel het meest trots op jou, als
deelnemer. Wel wil ik je om een
gunst vragen: doe ons een plezier

The Redhead Days festival continues to
flourish. This year you can choose from a
wide selection of activities including of
course the magnificent group photo in
the local park and the grand exhibition
in the Grote Kerk.
This year is particularly notable as it is
our 10th anniversary and as such we
have chosen a special theme: Vincent
van Gogh. In 2015 it is exactly 125
years since the world famous redheaded
Dutch Master died. 2015 is also the
national “Year of van Gogh”.
The Van Gogh specials during Redhead
Days 2015 vary from portrait drawing to
exhibitions, visits to the Van Gogh
House and the flower parade in Zundert.
This local town, van Gogh’s birth place
will be featuring many van Gogh related
events and activities.
Redhead Days will also feature several
Van Gogh specials shown in our Van
Gogh pages. Here you will find an
overview of all the exhibitions and
activities provided by other cultural
organisations.
The festival started 10 years ago with
the idea from one individual and now the
Redhead Days is collectively organised
by 70 enthusiastic volunteers. All our
organisers, sponsors, crowd funders,
artists and all our volunteers strive to
make this an unforgettable experience

Jacky Colliss Harvey schreef ‘Red: A
History of the Redhead’, het eerste
boek waarin de geschiedenis van
roodharigen door de eeuwen heen
in kunst, literatuur, wetenschap,
religie, politiek en feminisme aan
bod komt. En ‘Red’ is meer dan een
boek voor en over roodharigen. Het
onderzoekt niet alleen de evolutie
en gen mutatie, het gaat ook over
misvattingen en vooroordelen waar
‘anders dan anderen’ mee te maken
hebben. In juni dit jaar verscheen
het boek.
Jacky Colliss Harvey geeft tijdens
Redhead Days 2015 een lezing.
Jacky Colliss Harvey studeerde
Engels aan de Cambridge University en geschiedenis aan het Courtauld Institute of Art in Londen.
Als roodharige heeft zij ook een
carrière als model en figurante in
bekende films.

“Red: A history of the Redhead” is
the first book where the history of
redheads is explored throughout the
ages. It covers aspects such as art,
literature, science religion, politics and
feminism. “Red “ is more than a book
about redheads. It researches not only
the evolution of the gene mutation
but also the misconceptions and prejudices attributed to being different
to others.
The author, Jacky Colliss Harvey will be
giving a reading during the Redhead
Days Festival 2015. Jacky read English
at Cambridge University and History
at the Courtauld Institute of Art in
London. As a redhead she has also
forged a career as a model and has
had parts in several well-known films.
BREDA - Een crowdfunding campagne voor de Redhead Day in Breda heeft
25.776 euro opgeleverd. Dat is aanzienlijk meer dan de twintig mille waar de
organisatoren op gehoopt hadden. Er waren 350 donateurs die een bijdrage
hadden voor het evenement waarbij mensen met rood haar de hoofdrol hebben.

A Crowdfunding campaign for Redhead Days in Breda has raised €25,776. This
amount has exceeded the €20k the organisation had hoped to raise. These donations came from 350 redheads around the world helping to support our annual event.

“Find your passion and do
what makes you happy.”
That is one of Bart Rouwenhorst’s, founder and festival director of the Redhead Days, personal favourite expressions. It is his interpretation of the idea
that every individual has this special quality and by utilising this quality one
becomes a happier person. Redhead Days came into existence more or less
accidentally 11 years ago. Bart is a passionate artist and dearly wanted to
paint redheaded models. His inspiration came from the revered painters such
as Dante Rosetti and Gustav Klimt. He made an appeal and was overwhelmed
with the 150 fold reply. He invited them all to join him in Asten.
Family
The most remarkable effect of that day in Asten was that all the participants were
so keen to make contact with each other regardless of many of them being complete strangers to one another. “It appeared to be one big happy family. As soon as
they saw each other they started chatting.”

negative experiences due to the colour of their hair. They are noticeable and as
such are often the butt of jokes and the object of negative attention. This begs
the question as to whether being proud of your colour or trying to fit in takes

VAN GOGH FIETSPAD DOOR DAAN ROOSEGAARDE
Tussen Nuenen en Eindhoven is een fietspad aangelegd dat licht geeft! Daan
Roosegaarde is een kunstenaar die het lichtgevende fietspad heeft bedacht.
Het fietspad is geïnspireerd op het kunstwerk van Van Gogh, Sterrennacht.
Daan Roosegaarde wil graag poëzie en technologie met elkaar te koppelen.
Het fietspad wordt overdag opgeladen door de zon en ‘s avonds geeft het licht.
In 1883 woonde Van Gogh in Nuenen en dat trekt veel toeristen aan maar
volgens Daan is er een probleem, er is
niets te zien.

in contact blijven en plannen
maken om samen naar ons festival
in Breda te komen.

we op ons unieke feest de mensen samenbrengen. De keuze is groot; nooit
eerder was je samen met Redheads met zoveel verschillende nationaliteiten.

VAN GOGH CYCLE PATH BY DAAN ROOSEGAARDE
Between Nuenen and Eindhoven you will find a specially laid lighted pathway!
This extraordinary cycle path was created by artist Daan Roosengaarde.
This was inspired by the masterpiece Starry Night by van Gogh. Daan has successfully attempted to combine poetry and technology by means of this unique pathway. During the day the sun’s rays charge the electrical elements so that the path
remains lit throughout the evening. Van Gogh lived in Nuenen in 1883 and as
such many tourists come to visit. According to Daan this was a bit of a problem
as there wasn’t really that much to see, however since the creation of his pathway
(12 November 2014) there is now a really good reason to come and visit!
The Redhead Days is proud to introduce their first affiliate organisation.
What is that? Fans from around the
world are coming together to organise their own smaller festivals.
This allows our international fans
to come together and celebrate on
home turf and gives them the chance
to make plans to visit the main event
in Breda together . Our first affiliate
festival took place in London.

‘Goghflow’
van somber grijs naar een eruptie van kleuren
Zwaar en somber, mensen zonder herkenbaar gezicht, zo tekende
Vincent van Gogh in zijn beginperiode. Bijvoorbeeld taferelen
van Brabantse vrouwen die voorovergebogen het land bewerken. Deze grove, in houtskool opgezette schetsen en de latere,
kleurrijke schilderijen inspireerden fotograaf Wiesje Peels (1975,
Eindhoven) en grafisch ontwerper Steffen Maas (1973, ‘s Hertogenbosch) tot een uitzonderlijke, hedendaagse interpretatie van
het werk van Vincent van Gogh.
Al reagerend op elkaars ideeën en improvisaties bedachten
Peels en Maas de concepten en creëerden zij de beelden. Resultaat is een serie foto’s onder de projectnaam Goghflow (Gogh
with the flow). Zij maakten deze begin dit jaar als Artists in
Residence (AiR) in het Vincent van Goghhuis in Zundert. De
focus lag op landschappen, kleuren- en zwart/wit-studies en
onderzoek naar portretten.
VECHTEN EN VERLANGEN
Al een poos is Peels gefascineerd door kunstenaars die geobsedeerd
kunnen raken door hun beeldend werk. “Waarschijnlijk omdat ikzelf
als autonoom fotograaf eveneens obsessieve fases heb en als ze er
niet zijn, dan weer daardoor gefrustreerd kan raken.” Graag zou ze
met Van Gogh hebben willen samenwerken. “Ik stel me voor hoe
hij met zijn ambities vocht, intens verlangde naar erkenning en een
enorme drang voelde om te creëren.”

Van Gogh wilde beelden maken die overtuigen. “Eerder als ontwerper dan als kunstenaar koos hij heel strategisch wat hij wilde
verbeeldden.” Van Gogh maakte iconische portretten, vindt Maas.
“Heb je eenmaal een beeld van Van Gogh gezien, dan zul je het nooit
meer vergeten, het staat in je geheugen gegrift.”

schilderde tegen een warmrode achtergrond, die vertaalde Peels
door in een verlaten kas de achtergebleven gewassen met pluisvormige bollen tegen een rood doek te fotograferen, het tafereel met
zorg uitgelicht. Alles bij elkaar een indringende impressie.
PORTRETSTUDIES
Vincent tekende en schilderde in zijn begintijd nauwelijks gezichten.
Of ze zagen er wat onbeholpen uit. Op Peels’ foto’s is er ook telkens in
de gezichten iets aan de hand. Mensen zijn geportretteerd met hun
ruggen naar de fotograaf gedraaid, of met het hoofd verborgen achter kledingstukken. Of niet zichtbaar doordat hoofdhaar en baard in
elkaar overlopend om het hoofd zijn gewikkeld. Het gezicht van een
oude vrouw is in een vreemd frame gevangen, want gefotografeerd
door een grote graanzeef. In een andere foto zie je het achterhoofd
waar je het gezicht verwacht, of is het hoofd geheel verdwenen in
wuivende, goudachtige grashalmen.
INSPIRATIE UIT ‘WONDERLIJKE WERKEN’ EMO VERKERK
Een voorbeeld voor Peels en Maas zijn de portretten van Emo
Verkerk (1955, Amsterdam). In 2014 schilderde Verkerk ‘Vincent in
Londen’. Dat is weliswaar een connectie, maar veel belangrijker dan
deze is de wijze waarop Verkerk portretten schildert. Het zijn ‘wonderlijke werken, waarin vorm en kleur een eigen leven leiden’ en ‘hij
heeft zich losgemaakt van het portret zoals iedereen dat begrijpt’. Zo
schrijft het Haags Gemeente Museum over zijn overzichtstentoonstelling eind 2014- begin 2015.
Humor, herkenning, vervreemding en het oproepen van vragen zijn
voor Peels en Maas eveneens belangrijke expressiemogelijkheden.
HALLUCINEREND
“In zijn werk zit een enorm, haast hallucinerend contrast tussen
zijn eerste, sobere houtskooltekeningen en het gouden licht en de
eruptie van kleuren in Frankrijk.” In zijn gebruik hiervan ziet Peels
overeenkomsten met haar foto’s voor Goghflow.
Ook zij legde het Brabantse land vast. In de ochtendmist, de akkers
met vorstdoeken overspannen, in licht dat op dat tijdstip alles
nagenoeg kleurloos laat. In de foto’s doemt eenzelfde beeld op als bij
Van Gogh. De vormen van gebukte vrouwen, grauw en benauwend,
zonder perspectief op beter.
JUMP!
Goghflow heeft een vervolg; deze zomer in juni - juli, daarna in
oktober en volgend jaar in januari en februari. In worklabs reageren
fotograaf Peels, grafisch ontwerper Maas en de deelnemers op Van
Gogh en op elkaars interpretaties van hem.
Dit project is ondergebracht in Jump!, een persoonlijk talentontwikkelingstraject dat Peels krijgt aangeboden door BKKC, het Brabants
kenniscentrum kunst en cultuur, een onafhankelijk platform waar
zakelijke creativiteit en creatieve zakelijkheid bij elkaar komen. Voor
deze coaching werden in totaal acht talentvolle kunstenaars voorgedragen door de Brabantse galeriehouders Majke Hüsstege, Jan van
Hoof, Ingrid Luycks en Petra Cardinaal (Pennings).
INDRINGEND
Én zij nam eveneens die expressieve kleuren mee. Als subtiel
fragment, zoals de goudachtig warmoranje gekleurde lap stof die de
somberte doorsnijdt van een opengeslagen opslag van kuilgras, in

startte in de Artist in Residence periode in Zundert.

GOGHFLOW: FROM DREARY GREY TO AN ERUPTION OF COLOUR
When Vincent van Gogh started drawing with dreary, sombre colours and
with people without recognizable faces. For example his scenes of women
from Brabant working on the land. These rough charcoal sketches and his
colourful paintings inspired Wiesje Peels (1975, Eindhoven) and graphic
designer Steffen Maas (1973, ‘s Hertogenbosch) to create an extraordinary
contemporary interpretation of Vincent van Gogh’s work.
Responding to each other’s ideas and improvisations Peels and Maas
came up with concepts to create the images. The result was a series of
photo’s with the name Goghflow (Gogh with the flow). They made these at
the beginning of this year as Artists in Residence (AiR) at the Vincent van
Gogh house in Zundert. The focus was on landscapes, colour and black/
white studies and the research for portraits.
BATTLE AND DESIRE
For a while now Peels had been fascinated by artists who become obsessed
with their own work. “It could have something to do with the fact that I
myself am an autonomous photographer and I recognize those obsessive
phases you go through. And when they are not there, that is frustrating
as well. She would have loved to work with Van Gogh. “I imagine him
fighting his ambitions, his deep desire for acknowledgement and his
enormous urge to create.
ICONIC
Van Gogh wanted to create images that were convincing “Rather as a
designer than an artist he choose very strategically what he wanted to
depict. Van Gogh made iconic portraits according to Maas. ‘Once you’ve
seen an image of Van Gogh, you will never forget it, it’s etched into your
memory.”
INSPIRATION FROM ‘WONDERFUL WORKS’ EMO VERKERK
The portraits of Emo Verkerk were examples to Peels and Maas, ‘they are
wonderful works in which shape and colour lead their own lives’ and also
‘he has disconnected himself from portraits in a way everybody else knows
them’. According to the Haags Council Museum about his exhibition
2014-2015.
PUBLICATION – COMPLETION
In June 2016 a final piece will be published, that will complete Peels’ and
Maas’ special project Goghflow. A project that started 18 months ago in
the Artists in Residence project in Zundert.
Wiesje Peels en Steffen Maas bouwden het gastatelier van de Artists in
Residence in Zundert om tot studio en nodigden in een advertentie in de
plaatselijke Zundertse Bode mensen uit om te komen poseren in de geest
van Vincent. “We maakten een décor en met verzamelde materialen en
kleding ontwierpen we een nieuw beeld.”
Soms kwamen de beelden werkelijk dicht tot de geest van Van Gogh.
Wiesje Peels:
“Nietsvermoedend fotografeerde ik vriendin Annemarie van 88 voor een
groene achtergrond (verkregen van de plaatselijke behanghandel) en met
een antieke zeef en rode keukenhandschoenen die Steffen (Maas - red.)
meebracht uit Azië. Later stuitte ik op een brief van Vincent aan Theo
waarin hij beschrijft hoe hij bezig is aan een portret van zijn moeder;
“Het portret zal asgrauw zijn op een groene achtergrond en gekleed in
karmijnrood”.
Toen ik dit las en het portret van Annemarie bekeek dacht ik even met
Vincent verbonden te zijn geweest.”
Wiesje Peels and Steffen Maas built the guest studio of the Artists in Residence
in Zundert and with an advert in the local newspaper they invited people to pose
for art with the spirit of Vincent woven into it. “With one set, different materials
and clothes we created a new image.”
Sometimes the images came truly close to van Gogh’s spirit. Wiesje Peels:
“When photographing my friend Annemarie who’s 88, something unexpected
happened. I put her in front of a green background that I had found at our local
wallpaper store, with an antique sieve and red kitchen gloves Steffen Maas had
brought back from Asia. Later I discovered in a letter from Vincent to Theo, his
brother, in which he describes how he is working on a portrait of his mother. ‘It
will be ashy-gray on a green background clothed in carmine’ When I read that
and looked at Annemarie’s picture I really felt a strong connection to Vincent.

seizoensbrochure 2015/16 maakte zij
verschillende portretten.

preparations of the floats which will be
shown in the parade and we will show
you points of interest in Van Gogh’s birth
place.
On both days we will take you to the
show ground where all the floats will
be exhibited. After that we will visit the

with memories and inspiration. Here we

Gogh. Franz Artz. “De nachten waren voor Vincent de momenten waarop hij tot bezinning kwam. In het maanlicht
heb ik sporen op en in het ijs gefotografeerd die me deden
denken aan de Sterrennacht boven de Rhône.

to be included in the now well known “the world of van Gogh”
travelling exhibition reflecting van Gogh locations in the
Netherlands, Belgium and France.
Piet Raats: “it is an image of the sun portraying a similar
meaning as the sunflowers in Van Gogh’s work.” Frans Artz:
“The nights were the moments which van Gogh used for reflection. I have captured traces on and in the ice in the moonlight
which made me think about the famous Starry Night over the
Rhone painting.
Vijfkoppige jury
160 fotografen, amateurs en professionals, uit binnen en
buitenland, zonden in voor de wedstrijd uitgeschreven
door het Vincent van Gogh Huis in Zundert en stichting
De Brabantse Hoeders. De jury koos 30 foto’s uit. De jury
bestond uit: Reinout van den Bergh en Jan Schaerlackens
(curators BredaPhoto), fotograaf Anne Geene, Rebecca
Nelemans kunsthistorica, Van Gogh Brabant) en Jac. Biemans, historicus, De Stichting De Brabantse Hoeders.

schilder Bart Rouwenhorst exposeren gezamenlijk
hun werk in het eerste weekend van september.

Bart Rouwenhorst, directeur van het Redhead Days
festival, schildert vrijwel uitsluitend roodharige
vrouwen. Schilderijen van modellen zijn de reden
dat het Redhead Days festival is ontstaan. Mooi,
kwetsbaar, stoer, sensueel, liefde: ieder schilderij
heeft een persoonlijk verhaal in zich.
Met een beperkt gebruik van kleuren zoekt hij
de esthetiek van de vrouw. Bart zal een zevental
schilderijen tentoonstellen.
Ad Vlemmix, ooit initiatiefnemer van BredaPhoto,
fotografeert meestal jonge vrouwen. Tegenwoordig vooral (beginnende) actrices. Daarbij heeft hij
een ‘lichte voorkeur’ voor roodharigen. In zijn fotografie zoekt Ad, evenals Bart, de esthetiek. Ad zal
foto’s laten zien van jonge theatervrouwen waaronder een roodharige actrice. Daarnaast exposeert hij
100 portretten die hij “aan de rol” wil presenteren.
Ton Dirven heeft een andere weg bewandeld. Hij
heeft zich voor zijn foto’s laten inspireren door Van
Gogh. Diens beelden, maar ook van Gogh’s drive
en (vermeende?) gekte waren uitgangspunten.
Hoewel Ton esthetiek niet schuwt, laat hij de kijker
liever achter met vragen. Tegelijk kunnen zijn
foto’s ook confronterend zijn. Ton zal twaalf foto’s
exposeren.

Gedurende de expositie zijn de kunstenaars in de
Stadsgalerij.

Two photographers, Ton Dirven and Ad Vlemmix, and
painter Bart Rouwenhorst exhibit their work during
the first weekend of September.
Bart Rouwenhorst, director of the Redhead Days festival, paints mostly red haired women. The paintings
he has made are the inspiration and reason for the
existence of the Redhead Days. Beautiful, vulnerable,
tough, sensual, love, every painting has a personal
story in itself. With a limited use of colours he finds the
aesthetics of women. Bart will exhibit seven paintings.
Ad Vlemmix, once organizer of BredaPhoto, usually
photographs young women, nowadays it is mostly
upcoming actrices, and of course redheads! In his photography Ad tries to find, just like Bart, the aesthetics
of the image. He is going to exhibit 100 portraits he
will be presenting ‘on a roll’.
Ton Dirven on the other hand went a different way
though, he has used Van Gogh as an inspiration for
his pictures, not only his images but he also used Van
Gogh’s drive and his alleged insanity as the base of
his work. Even though Ton doesn’t shy away from
the aesthetics he mostly wants to leave the viewer
with questions. At the same time his pictures can be
confrontational, Ton will be exposing twelve pictures
in total.

Yvette Conrard woont in Emeryville, vlakbij San Francisco, California,
in Noord- Amerika. Al zes jaar lang
droomt zij over het bezoeken van
Redhead Days. Nu het het tien-jarige
jubileum is, hakte ze de knoop door
om te komen. Ze verbaast zich erover
dat het opgroeien met rood haar niet
makkelijk was door al het geplaag, en
nu ze eenmaal volwassen is, mensen
haar op straat juist aanspreken om
haar complimenten te maken over
haar haar.

Andrea Colson uit Micronesia bezoekt dit jaar voor het eerst Redhead Days.
Andrea is Baptist zendelinge in Chuuk in Micronesia, een eilandengroep in de
Stille Oceaan, noordelijk van Australië, ongeveer op dezelfde hoogte als Filippijnen. Ze heeft enkellang, rood haar. Haar reis met het vliegtuig duurt zo’n twee
dagen en 13 uur. Zij komt dit jaar voor het eerst naar Redhead Days. Zo’n zes jaar
geleden las ze in een online krant over Redhead Days. Haar bezoek is voor haar
een droom die uitkomt.
Andrea Colson was born in America. “But I’ve lived almost my whole life in the Pacific
Islands. I live in Chuuk, Micronesia. I am a Christian (Baptist) missionary here.” “This
year (2015) will be my first time to visit the Redhead Days in Breda. I have looked forward to it for years and would love to come back again. I’m visiting with my brother
and sister, neither of them have red hair. Only me, I am strawberry-blonde shade of red.”
“Everybody there looks just like me!”
Andrea first heard about the RHD in a news article online. “It was probably six or
more years ago, and the color for the photoshoot that year was white. I remember
thinking, “Everybody there looks just like me!” I was very much intrigued with the
idea and wanted to go with all my heart.”
Amazing and unique experience
“I have always lived in a place where I’m the only person with hair this color. All my
island friends have brown skin and black hair. To be in a place with hundreds or even
thousands of others with fair skin and red hair must surely be an amazing and very
unique experience. In all the pictures I’ve seen, everyone is so happy and excited to be
there in Breda .
Ankle-length hair
I have always loved the color of my hair, and not just the color, but also the length.
Even when I was a little girl my hair was long. As I grew up, I would keep my hair trimmed and do my best to take care of my hair so it is healthy. Now my hair is anklelength and very thick.
Redhead Days is interesting for ‘not readheads’ to visit, because I think many people
appreciate and admire this unique hair color, and it is very special to have an event
dedicated to gingers :-) I think that hair is a gift from God, and I’m glad that there is
an event that admires and honors this gift. I am so thankful to everyone who works so
hard to plan and direct this event. You are amazing! Thank you, Bart, for starting it all!
Honered to be a part
I am so happy to meet others with hair my same color, and hopefully share a love for
long hair like mine at the same time. I am honored to be a part of this event, and I
hope to come back again in the future. I’m probably the only person living in Micronesia (perhaps even the entire Pacific!) who has long strawberry-blonde hair, so to be
among so many ginger-friends is an honor and an incredible opportunity that I will
remember forever.

I have never actually been to Redhead
Days. I have been watching it online for
about 6 or 7 years. I stumbled upon the
website when I was looking up information on redheads. I have been wanting to go and be a part
of the gathering ever since I stumbled
on the website, but sometimes life keeps
us busy and away from the things we
want to do. When I learned this year
was the 10th anniversary I decided this
was the year I MUST go. I am excited to come to Breda and partake in all the festivities. The idea of so
many redheads taking over a town that
welcomes them for 3 days is exciting to
me. I am sure that sounds a little crazy,
but in my mind it is a rare event. I am
naturally attracted to things that are
rare, unique and different. I would say
Redhead Days fits that criteria.
Curly red hair and fair skin. Elske Dillen, 17 yrs, born in Veldhoven is a typical redhead.
She has visited the Redhead Days twice, in 2012 and 2013. Unfortunately she had to
miss it last year and was so disappointed.
Whilst on holiday in Zandvoort Elske was approached by a redheaded stranger with
a red moustache. “You know where you have to go? ”he said, “to the Redhead Days
festival”. Following this golden tip Elske turned up at the festival 3 years ago.
What is the best activity in your opinion during the festival? “The mega photo shoot
with all the redheads, without a doubt. And that everyone is so approachable so conversation with strangers is so easy. A sea of redheads all over the place, in the shops,
in the pubs, everywhere!”
Van Zandvoort naar Breda
Een enorme bos rode krullen, een lichte huid. Elske Dillen, 17 jaar oud, geboren
in Veldhoven, heeft het. Twee keer eerder bezocht ze Redhead Days, in 2012 en
2013. In 2014 kon ze er helaas niet bij zijn. Echt heel jammer, vond ze dat.
Getipt
Op vakantie in Zandvoort werd Elske aangesproken door een wildvreemde man
met een rode snor. ‘Weet je waar je eens naar toe moet gaan?’ was zijn vraag.
‘Naar Redhead Days.’ Zo kwam Elske drie jaar geleden in Breda terecht.
Elske is relaxt. Ze noemt zichzelf een onopvallende ADHD-er. “Veel roodharigen
schijnen ADHD te hebben,” vertelt ze. Of is het misschien een ander woord voor
het temperament dat roodharigen zouden hebben, zoals vaak wordt gezegd?
Zou kunnen, denkt ze.
Fotoshoot
Het leukste tijdens het festival? “De grote fotoshoot met alle roodharigen.”
Geen twijfel mogelijk.
“En dat je met iedereen makkelijk in gesprek raakt. En overal zie je roodharigen,
in de winkels, in de cafés. Echt overal!”
De kraampjes en de modeshow vindt ze ook leuk. “In die modeshow zag je heel
goed dat er was nagedacht over de kleuren van de kleding bij het rode haar én
de kleur ogen. Roodharigen met blauwe ogen hebben vaak een nog blekere
huid. Met een andere kleur ogen is dat weer anders.”
Niet één roze truitje in de kast
Dat kleur inderdaad belangrijk is viel haar in één keer op toen ze op de basisschool zat. “Groep 7 of acht, dat weet ik niet meer.” Alle meiden spraken af om
op één dag allemaal iets aan te doen dat roze is. Tsja,de jongens, daar was het
om te doen.
Opvallen
Thuis in de kast gedoken, vond Elske niets in die kleur. Er mee zitten? Allesbehalve. Pestkoppen? Ze vallen haar niet eens op, onverstoorbaar is ze daarin.
Nee, dan haar zus, niet roodharig. Die zit er meer mee. “Zij neemt het altijd voor
me op en gaat tegen anderen in. Ik zit dan eerder over haar in!”

Dan is Elske er zeker weer bij, het is een ‘feestje’, dat ze niet wil missen.
I will probably come to the festival alone. I have asked a few friends, but most
people are busy. I think it’s going to be
amazing.
In all honesty, growing up as a redhead
was very difficult. I was teased and bullied a lot. I often think that’s why redheads have a reputation as being fiery.
We just get tired of all the abuse and
start pushing back. What is so strange
is that you get teased so much as a kid
and then suddenly when you are 21 you
are a rock star. I get so many compliments on my hair as a adult. People just
stop me on the street or go out of their
way to tell me how beautiful my hair is.
There was a time in my teenage years
I asked my mom if I could dye my hair
blond. I thought life would be so much
better. Fortunately I never did and now
I can’t imagine being anything but a
redhead.
It’s hard to know what to tell redheaded
children. Kids can be so mean. I think
it’s important to support them and try
to teach them to understand how not
only how to accept themselves but to
really relish in their uniqueness. I cried
many tears because I was a redhead and
so pale. Over time I learned how to value
myself and I appreciate my unique look.

Bezocht Redhead Days eerder in: 2012 en 2013
Volgt nu een creatieve opleiding aan St. Lucas in Boxtel.
Vrijheid en out of the box
Rood haar hebben en In Indonesië wonen, hoe bijzonder
is dat? Als blanke ben je sowieso al speciaal, voeg daar
rood haar aan toe en je valt helemaal op. Zeker in de kampong. “Mensen komen naar je toe en willen dan ook aan
de haren op je arm voelen, want dat kennen ze ook niet”,
vertelt Robin Free. Zij en haar zus Renske, allebei roodharig, en hun moeder Karin, die eveneens rood haar heeft,
maakten het mee. De enige niet-roodharige in het gezin
is de vader.
De ervaringen in Indonesië deden Robin en Renske op
toen zij, twaalf en vijftien jaar oud, in 2010 met hun ouders naar Yogyakarta verhuisden. Een middelgrote stad,
omgeven door theeplantages aan de voet van de vulkaan
Merapi op Midden-Java, op ongeveer 500 km afstand van
Jakarta waar Karin en haar man via ingenieursbureau
DHV voor het Ministerie van Ontwikkelingssamenwerking aan een infrastructuur project werkten.
ALLE WINDSTREKEN
Inmiddels is het gezin al weer even terug in Nederland,
Renske studeert Mijnbouw (Technische Aardwetenschappen) in Delft en Robin vervolgt haar middelbare
school opleiding aan de Internationale School Breda.
Wat merken ze nú door hun rode haar? Robin is er gauw
uit. Op haar school zitten mensen uit alle windstreken
met ieder hun eigen bijzonderheden. Rood haar hebben
is allesbehalve ‘een ding’. Ook Renske merkt weinig van
een andere benadering.
Mazar-e-Sharif
ROOD HAAR HEBBEN IN AFGHANISTAN
BEING REDHEADED IN AFGHANISTAN
Awrang is een achttienjarige high-school student uit Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, een stad op 170 km afstand van Kunduz, waar Nederland meewerkte
aan het trainen van politiemensen.
In Mazar-e-Sharif is de kans op aanslagen kleiner dan elders in Afghanistan. Iedereen doet zijn best het land op te bouwen, de nieuwe generatie van
Awrang is er eens te meer van overtuigd dat het kan. De kans op aanslagen
ontmoedigt hem niet. Hij ziet het als zijn plicht zijn opleiding af te maken en
zich voor zijn land in te zetten.
Voor zover Awrang weet is hij de enige roodharige in zijn provincie. Op zoek
naar andere roodharigen vond Awrang Redhead Days op internet. Hij wil
heel graag Redhead Days bezoeken om ervaringen uit te wisselen. Door mee
te doen aan de grote Photoshoot kan hij zijn klasgenoten laten zien, dat hij
niet de enige roodharige is.
Volgens Awrang is Redhead Days voor niet-roodharigen goed om meer te
leren van elkaars ervaringen en dat niet-roodharigen zich realiseren wanneer hun houding toch kwetsend is, terwijl ze het eigenlijk niet zo bedoelen.
HAAR GEDONEERD
Veel opmerkelijker is Robins verhaal over het doneren
van haar rode haar, eind 2014. “Het was toen heel lang.
Ik bedacht me dat er voor roodharigen die door chemokuren hun haar verliezen, vast heel weinig beschikbaar is
om een pruik van te maken. Ik heb het laten afknippen en
gedoneerd aan het Kankerfonds.”
WAT IS ‘ANDERS’
Wat betekent het om anders dan anderen te zijn door je
rode haar? Voor de laatste twee Nederlandse generaties
was dat reden genoeg om te worden gepest. Karins vader moest als kleine jongen iedere dag opnieuw aan zijn
kwelgeesten zien te ontkomen. Zijzelf, nu 51, had ook last
van haar rode haar. En toch ook weer niet, is haar conclusie.
BERENJAS
“Mijn moeder maakte altijd mijn kleding. Ik had een ‘beren’-jasje en daaronder een nep-leren broek. Ik viel er mee
op en ik was er heel trots op. We aten thuis rijst, mijn ouders komen uit Indonesië, waren niet gelovig, ik was niet
gedoopt.” Het was dus niet alleen het rode haar dat haar
anders maakte, veel eerder hoe zij in het leven staat.
OPENING
“Het is tijdgebonden en cultuur bepaald. Niet alleen
roodharigen vallen op, er zijn altijd wel groeperingen die
eruit springen, zichzelf willen zijn.” Karin ziet roodharig
zijn eerder als een ‘kleine opening’. Als je daardoor al ‘afwijkt’ van het gemiddelde, is het een minder grote stap
naar helemaal jezelf zijn. Het geeft vrijheid.
Haar dochters beamen het. Renske: “Mensen zijn zo geneigd in hokjes te denken. Denk gewoon ‘out of the box’.”
Anders zijn is eigenlijk niet meer of minder dan jezelf
zijn, doen waar jij voor kiest en niet afwachten wat een
ander ervan vindt.
SPECIAAL VOELEN
In 2009 gingen ze voor het eerst naar Redhead Days.
Renske heeft toen op de voorpagina van de Volkskrant
gestaan met een roodharige vriendin. ”Hilarisch”, zegt
Renske, “in alle straten zo veel roodharigen. Ik raakte ook
wat gedesoriënteerd. Altijd vinden we elkaar zó terug.
Tussen alle roodharigen raakten we elkaar kwijt.”
Ook dit jaar gaan Karin, Renske en Robin. Door de vrolijke en gezellige sfeer, het samen zijn en je speciaal voelen,
blijft Redhead Days aantrekkelijk.
FREEDOM AND OUT OF THE BOX
Living in Indonesia and having red hair; what a rare combination! Having fair skin is special enough but adding red hair
to the mix, then you really are going to get noticed, certainly
in Kampong. “You are approached by strangers wanting to
touch your hair and arms as this is a phenomenon they are
not familiar with” explains Robin Free. This was the experience of Robin, sister Renske (and mother Karin) who are all
redheads with fair skin who moved to Yogyakarta Indonesia
with their parents in 2010 when they were 12 and 15 years old.
They have since moved back to the Netherlands. During discussions regarding redheads they became aware of the fundamental differences between cultures. It is not just redheads
who are conspicuous, there are always groups who attract attention who just want to be themselves.
Karin sees being a redhead as an opportunity. If you already
differ slightly from the masses then it becomes easier to be
yourself. It gives you personal freedom. Her daughters confirm
this viewpoint. Renske explains, “People are always inclined to
have certain restraints. Think out of the box.” Being different is
really just being yourself allowing you to do what is best for you
and not necessarily following set trends.
Robin’s story regarding her red hair donation late in 2014 is
certainly noteworthy. “It was very long then. I realised that
there was a shortage of natural red hair for chemotherapy sufferers and my hair could be valuable for making wigs
for them. I cutmy hair and donated it to the Cancer Charity”.
My big familiy
My name is Awrang, I am 18 years old, from Afghanistan. I am student and I study
in 12th class at a high school.
I would love to take part with my big family (redhead family )in the huge photo
shoot and when I am back in Afghanistan I would show the photo to my classmates so that they also understand that I am not alone. I am the only red head at
my school, actually the only one in the province in which I live.
People don’t always call me by my name, they call me the red head (unusual word)
and it makes me feel sad. That’s why I wanted to surf through the internet to know
I am not alone. I believe, if I attend the event in Netherlands, I will meet other redheads. This will give me the reason and encouragement to move forward and give
me the belief that I am not alone any more.
I think Redhead Day is also interesting for others who don’t have red hair. This
will be a very good opportunity for them to learn from other people’s experiences. It
would be also vital that some people who don’t have red hair change their negative
attitudes towards the people with red hair.
I am currently living in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan and I haven’t attended the
Redhead festival anywhere abroad yet.
The majority of people in Afghanistan don’t know about the Redhead Days. I
would like nothing more than to attend the Redhead festival this year to meet new
friends from around the world, improve my networking and use this opportunity to
share my feelings and life stories I have with them.
In general, the situation of Afghanistan is not good enough, the situation here in
Mazar-e-Sharif (where I live in currently) is better than any other provinces.
This means people can go out to do their normal work and business, girls and boys
can go to schools and universities for education however, there are some security
threats toward them like bomb blasts and suicide attacks.
We as the nation, will try our best to bring peace and rebuild our country. This
can happen by the new generation from Afghanistan like myself and others like
me who are thoroughly committed and willing to rebuild their country for a better
future.
When we leave our homes then we really hope to get back alive as insurgency attacks can happen any time but I will not get disillusioned and will move forward
to continue my education here in Afghanistan and will serve our people in the long
term. This is our responsibly as citizens of Afghanistan. Thanks, Awrang

AANSTORMEND FASHION-TALENT
Tessa de Boer (23 november 1991, Leiderdorp) studeerde dit
jaar af in Mode Vormgeving / autonomous aan de Willem
de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam.
“In deze richting werk je vanuit een zelfgeformuleerde
doelstelling.” Dit jaar toont zij voor de tweede keer door
haar ontworpen kleding.
Via Marion Meerwaldt kwam Tessa bij de RHD. Marion zat
vorig jaar in de organisatie en zocht ontwerpers die tijdens
de modeshow hun werk wilden laten zien.
Toen zij bij de kapper zat om haar rode haren te laten knippen hoorde ze over Tessa’s werk en heeft ze haar gecontacteerd.
Tessa vond het erg leuk om met roodharige modellen te
werken. “Het paste goed bij mijn collectie van afgelopen
jaar. Die was helemaal zwart wat een gave combinatie
maakte met de modellen met hun uitgesproken haarkleur.”
CHANCE
“Tijdens Redhead Days 2015 laat ik mijn afstudeerproject CHANCE zien. Het zoekt de grens op tussen mode en
kunst. Ik benader dit werk meer als een serie om het lichaam in plaats van een collectie. Ik werk op een nieuwe
manier door toeval toe te laten.”
Veel conceptuele kunstenaars doen dit ook, ieder. Tessa
werkt geblinddoekt op een paspop. “Ik merk dat ik daardoor open sta voor nieuwe vormen die ik anders nooit zou
maken. Elke gemaakte vorm is een verrassing. De vormen
werk ik verder uit zodat ze te reproduceren zijn.”
WIT ZWART
De hoofdkleur is wit. De accentkleur zwart. Door het wit
komt de toevalsvorm het beste naar voren, diepte en plooien zijn goed te zien. Het zwart als accent gebruikt ik om
variaties aan te geven.”Tessa heeft een serie van zeven vormen gemaakt.“Ik abstraheer het lichaam van het model
omdat de vorm centraal staat. Voor de modeshow zullen
de rode haren er natuurlijk uitspringen.” Net als vorig jaar
een uitgesproken beeld.
ONDERZOEK
Tessa’s ontwerpen ontstaan altijd vanuit een onderzoeksproces. Soms werk ik met traditionele schetsen die ik uitwerk, soms pak ik dit aan zoals met CHANCE. In mijn ontwerpen zit vervreemding en het ziet er mysterieus uit, met
een stoere edgy rock ’n roll look.”
ROOD
Tessa heeft geen familie met rood haar, wel heeft een van
haar beste vriendinnen rood haar. “Op de academie heb ik
twee jaar geleden aan een gezamenlijk project gewerkt met
de kleur rood Hiervoor werkten wij ook met roodharigen
modellen.”
Wat vindt ze van een festival speciaal voor roodharigen?
“Omdat ik zelf geen rood haar heb wist ik hier niet van. Ik
vind het heel leuk dat het wordt georganiseerd. Het is bijzonder dat zoveel verschillende mensen verbonden worden door hun haarkleur.”
NAAR SHANGHAI
Na haar afstuderen gaat Tessa voor een maand naar de
universiteit in Shanghai om meer te leren over traditionele
Chinese kostuums. In de toekomst wil zij als zelfstandig
ontwerper verder werken aan exclusieve kleding collecties
en kunst projecten.
Zij woont nu in Den Haag. “Vorig jaar heb ik stage gelopen
bij Lena Quist in Berlijn. In juli was er een expositie en film
van mijn eindexamwerk te zien tijdens het WDKA afstudeer evenement in Rotterdam.
TESSA DE BOER, UPCOMING FASHION-TALENT
Tessa, 23 November 1991, Leiderdorp, lives in The Hague. This
year she graduated in Fashion Design with the specialization
autonomous, at Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. The
purpose is to work from a self formulated goal. This year will be
the second time, Tessa is showing her fashion designs.Marion
Meerwaldt, one of last year’s organizers, heard about Tessa while
having her red hair cut and contacted Tessa to introduce her to
the Redhead Days 2014.
Tessa really liked working with the red haired models. “They really fit my collection from last year. This collection was completely black and the combination with the bright red colour made
my designs stand out. “
“This year I will be showing my graduation assignment called
CHANCE. It touches the fine line between fashion and art. I
find it really extraordinary that people are connected by their
hair colour.”
After her graduation she will go to Shanghai to study at the
university to learn more about traditional Chinese wardrobe.
“In the future I hope to work as an independent designer.”
High Tea Redhead Days
Tijdens de Redhead Days 2014 is voor het eerst een High
Tea georganiseerd. Zo’n 80 mensen schreven zich in.
Vrolijke mix voor 80 mensen
De tent was ingericht met tafels met banken. De tafels
waren gedekt met een vrolijke mix van kopjes, bekers
en glazen en een vaasje met bloemen. Een etagère met
lekkers maakte het plaatje compleet. Er was veel animo;
alle plekken waren bezet.
Speciale gast
Speciale gast was de koningin van de Redhead Days uit
Ierland. Zij kwam gezellig een kopje thee mee drinken.
Stroopwafels, pepernoten, bonbons
Voor mensen uit binnen- en buitenland waren er typisch
Hollandse lekkernijen, zoals stroopwafels, pepernoten en
bonbons. Uiteraard waren er verschillende soorten thee
en lekkere limonadesiroop.
Tweemaal High tea dit jaar, nu ook met sandwiches
Iedereen was erg enthousiast. Reden om het dit jaar weer
in het programma op te nemen en zelfs uit te breiden.
Er zal op zaterdag én op zondag een High tea worden
georganiseerd. We serveren ook hartige hapjes, zoals
sandwiches.

The first Redhead Days High Tea was presented during the festival in 2014. The tent was furnished with tables and benches
providing space for 80 people.
The tables were set with a selection of cups, beakers, glasses
and vases of flowers providing a varied fun and inviting effect.
A fantastic spread of High Tea offerings completed the picture.
Special Guest
Our special guest was the crowned Queen of the Irish
Redhead Convention who came to join our guests for a cuppa.
Typical Dutch
Folk from all over the world travel to the Redhead Days Festival and that’s why we provided typical Dutch fare including
syrup waffles (stroopwafels), spiced biscuits (pepernoten) and
bonbons. Naturally we provided a selection of tea and soft
drinks.
Due to last year’s popularity, this year we will be providing
High Tea on Saturday and Sunday. This will include sandwiches and other savouries, plus the usual selection
of sweet delicacies.

In 2011 bezocht zij Breda en verbaasde zich over alle types roodharigen:
de kleuren, gekruld of stijl, lang of kort, leeftijd, man of vrouw, het hele
gezin met rood haar, baby’s met rood haar en ... ook roodharige katten
vielen op. Haar echtgenoot die haar vergezelde ,was net zo gefascineerd
als zij. Redhead Days bezoeken is zien en ervaren wat mensen met rood
haar drijft. En er is heel veel te doen. Het meest imponerende was de
grote Redhead Days Photoshoot. Een belevenis voor roodharigen die
in het alledaagse leven een uitzondering zijn en op Redhead Days de
boventoon voeren.
Hello, My name is Cordelia, almost 69 years old and I live in Australia. I last came to
Redhead Days in 2011. I am planning to come again in 2016, as part of a nostalgia
trip to Europe to celebrate my 70th birthday. I was born and grew up in England and
I think my red hair comes from my father who was born in Northumberland and was
probably descended from Norsemen.
‘Do the right thing’
My partner came with me to Breda in 2011. He is not a redhead but he decided to
‘do the right thing’. To his surprise, he thoroughly enjoyed himself too. We were both
fascinated to see all the different types and colours of redheads - young and old,
men and women, curly and straight, long and short, whole families, babies . . . even
red-haired cats. In my photo-album, a Breda cat blends in nicely with all my other
photos of redheads; very well camouflaged.
Persuade brother or son
In 2016, I would like to persuade either my red-haired brother or my red-haired son
to come with me. I was one of six children, only two of us born with red hair. And I
had four children myself; only one of whom inherited ‘The Hair’. That’s why it was so
interesting to see whole families of redheads at Breda.
Highlight: the big photoshoot
The highlight of course is the big photo shoot. We were all encouraged to wear the
same colour top; in 2011 it was white, a colour I do not usually wear, so before I left
Australia I bought three white tops: a T-shirt, a warm zip-jacket and something
midway between, because I had no idea what the weather would be like in Breda
that weekend (it was actually warm and sunny).
Best colours
I was very keen to attend the session in which a very knowledgeable adviser helped
individuals select the best colours and fabrics. Some people think all redheads are
the same, but the variety of hair and skin tones is immense. We do need help selecting the right colours for ourselves (even at my age !)
No-one seems to be indifferent to us
I have learnt a lot about redheads over my nearly seven decades of being one (and I
do still have natural red hair, by the way). I have found that people either absolutely
love, or hate, red hair; no-one seems to be indifferent to us, and isn’t that something?
Discover what makes us tick
So I would encourage both redheads and non-redheads to come along to discover
what makes us tick. There is so much to see and do, and of course Breda itself, a
lovely place with its architecture and river.
Full page spread
We stayed in a lovely B & B. Our very friendly hosts were impressed that we had
come all the way from Australia. Next morning, they gave us their copy of the full
page spread of the event in their local newspaper. We could not read the text of
course, but the pictures told a thousand stories and I still have that newspaper page
as a souvenir.

Redhead Days Camping
Bart Rouwenhorst, bedenker en directeur van het festival
had altijd al de wens om een camping bij het festival te betrekken zodat de bezoekers het hele roodharigenweekend
konden genieten van de activiteiten zonder zich druk te
maken om een dure hotelkamer. In 2012 kwam die droom
uit en en openden we onze eerste Redhead Days camping.
Dat jaar hadden we ongeveer 40 gasten en dit jaar hopen
we zeker 100-150 gasten te mogen verwelkomen.
De camping is het hele weekeinde open en kost 28 euro
per persoon per nacht. Je kunt ook een tent huren.
We organiseren de camping weer in samenwerking met
de Rooi Pannen, opleiding voor recreatie en toerisme.
Tientallen studenten werken met veel enthousiasme en
plezier mee. Onze gasten ontbreekt het aan niks en de
studenten kunnen waardevolle praktijkervaring opdoen.
Een win-win-situatie!
De sfeer op de camping is ongeëvenaard. Zo waren er eens
twee roodharige zussen uit Denemarken, die graag hun
65-jarige vader (hij had vroeger ook rood haar) wilden verrassen. Ze wilden graag op de camping staan, dus hadden
het hele weekend geboekt.
Veel campinggasten komen jaarlijks terug. Zoals de Belgische Emilie, die ieder jaar in haar eentje naar Breda komt,
maar zich geen moment alleen voelt.
‘Je maakt direct vrienden’
Voor Emilie is het de derde keer dit jaar dat ze naar Redhead Days komt. “Vorig jaar was de eerste keer dat ik het
hele weekeinde op de camping overnachtte. Ik kom alleen
maar ik voel me nooit alleen, je maakt direct vrienden.”
THE “MAGIC” ROOI PANNEN REDHEAD DAYS
CAMPSITE
Bart Rouwenhorst, creator and director of the festival has
always had the wish to connect the campsite to the festival
so all visitors have a chance to visit all activities during the
Redhead days weekend without worrying about an expensive
hotel room. This dream came true in 2012.
Our partner in organizing this year’s campsite is Rooi Pannen,
a Breda based secondary vocational education for Recreation
& Tourism. Tens of enthusiastic students will be working at
the campsite to pamper our guests and to see the practical side
of their education, a win-win situation!
The atmosphere at the campsite is unrivalled, the stories and
experiences of our guests speak for themselves. There were
once 2 Danish sisters who took their once red-haired father
with them. They booked a spot at the campsite for the whole
weekend and the joy they felt, but especially their father left an
impression on the campsite team. They were at the campfire
every night taking in this unique experience.
Many guests have found us year after year, like Emilie who
travels to Breda by herself but hasn’t felt lonely for a second.
Friendship in a second
This year it wil be the third time Emilie visits Redhead Days.
“First time I was only here for one day, but every time after that
I’ve been here the whole weekend. Last year was the first time,
from Friday till Monday that I stayed at the campiste. I travel here
alone, but you never feel lonely, you make friends in a second.”
Mini-roodharigen dag
De camping is een leuker alternatief dan naar een hotel
gaan. “Op een hotelkamer zit je alleen, op de camping heb
je altijd gezelschap. Het is daar dan een soort mini-roodharigendag!”
Daar worden de vriendschappen gesmeed.”

The campsite is a nicer alternative over a hotelroom. It’s more
fun to stay at a campsite, there’s always somebody to talk to.
It’s like a mini-Redhead Day celebration! “It’s not so much the
campsite, but the whole Redhead Days experience. Starting
the day with breakfast and fellow redheads is really great,
that’s where plans and friendships are made!”

Het napraten met elkaar na de groepsfoto en het kampvuur op de laatste avond steken met kop en schouders
boven de ervaringen uit.
Favorite memory
Talking with each other after the group photo and the campfire
the last night, they are Emilie’s favorite experiences ‘I’m absolutely going to take part in the group photo and the campsite.”
Band met elkaar voordat je elkaar kent
Volgend jaar is Emilie er ‘zeker en vast’ weer bij. “Ik wil
het niet meer missen! Vanaf dat ik een nieuwe agenda heb
ieder jaar, duid ik dat weekend al aan. Voordat ik de Redhead Days kende had ik dat gevoel nog niet meegemaakt,
dat je een band hebt met mensen voordat je ze zelfs kent. Instant bond you feel
Next year Emile will absolutely come again. I wouldn’t want
to miss it! As soon as I buy myself a new diary I block this
weekend so I can be here. Every year you get a chance to make
so many new friends, and you feel an instant connection with
fellow redheads. Before I knew the Redhead Days I had never
felt this before, the instant bond you feel without ever having
met before.

Ons festival heeft weliswaar een specifieke themakleur, maar streeft daarnaast ook vergroening na, met steun van het programma “Werelds delen”
van gemeente Breda.
Omdat Breda niet op zichzelf staat, en een positie in de wereld inneemt en
als evenementenstad het goede voorbeeld wil geven, steunt de gemeente
ons festival om te vergroenen. We doen dat door de voornaamste bron van
milieubelasting aandacht te geven: de reis van onze deelnemers naar en
van het evenement. We stimuleren het gebruik van openbaar vervoer in samenwerking met onze sponsoren NS en Arriva, we stimuleren samen reizen
in samenwerking met de Apps Toogether en Blablacar, en we stimuleren
de CO2 compensatie van vliegreizen. Met deze maatregelen hopen we een
substantiële beperking van de “footprint” van het festival te bereiken. En...
niet onbelangrijk: samen reizen in auto of openbaar vervoer zorgt dat onze
festivalbezoekers ook tijdens de reizen andere roodharigen ontmoeten, en
daar gaat het festival om!
Our festival may have a blue theme colour this year however we are also aiming
to be as “green” as possible from an environmental point of view. We are happily
receiving the support from the programme “Werelds delen” (Hemispheres) from
the Breda Council. Breda wants to provide a good example to the world and
as such wants to support our event and encourages us and our visitors to be
as “green” as possible. Therefore we are promoting the need to be aware of our
carbon footprint suggesting public transport as a suitable means of transport.
This in co-operation with our sponsors NS (national railway) and Arriva (bus
company). Further we hope to stimulate joint travel by use of the Apps Together
and Blablacar. By these means we hope to reduce the carbon footprint during
our festival. Not to be forgotten, if you choose to travel together then it gives
you the chance of meeting fellow visitors adding to the general enjoyment of our
festival.

PLAYKNOP DRUKKEN
“DJ School Breda is een muziekschool
anno 21e eeuw. DJ School Breda leert je
hoe je instrumenten samen in een mix
ten gehore brengt. Jong en oud krijgt
de kans zijn dj-talent te ontdekken en
te ontwikkelen. Ook geven we produceerlessen en workshops.
Jongere muziekliefhebbers leren op
de DJ School Breda spelenderwijs.
Iedere les is een feestje. Onze ervaren
instructeurs leggen uit hoe alle knopjes
op de hedendaagse dj gear werken, hoe
je een goede mix in elkaar zet en hoe je
een avond met muziek kunt opbouwen.
De passie voor het dj-vak en de kennis
van de nieuwste dj gear dragen wij
graag over. DJ School Breda laat zien
dat dj zijn meer is dan alleen op een
playknop drukken. Ook de meer ervaren
dj’s komen regelmatig over de vloer.
Door de razendsnelle veranderingen en
vooral vernieuwingen, is het ook voor
hen interessant. Een greep van wat we
doen: Dj Lessen van basis tot professional, muziek produceer lessen van basis
tot master, kinder- verjaardagsfeestjes,
lessen op basis en voortgezet onderwijs
en op locatie, workshops, kinderfeesten,
clinics, dj’s m/v voor evenementen en
verhuur licht en geluid. We werken landelijk samen aan een kwaliteitsaanbod.

DJ School Breda is a modern 21st century
music school. Once you were able to have
piano or violin lessons, now at DJ School
Breda you can learn how to blend sounds
and instruments to form a dj mix. Young
and old are offered the chance to discover
and develop their DJ skills. Both DJ and
production lessons are available.
Every lesson is fun and exciting! Even the
more experienced DJ’s use our facilities. Due to the constant changes and
innovation within our industry it remains
important for our experienced (famous/
international) DJ’s to keep up to date with
the new techniques and latest trends via DJ
School Breda.
Due to the high standards guaranteed by
DJ School Breda it has become necessary to
offer these courses throughout the country.

WERKEN SAMEN AAN CONTINUÏTEIT
WORKING TOGETHER ON CONTINUITY
Het Redhead Days festival heeft een nauwe samenwerking met diverse scholen in Breda.Als festival-kernteam zijn we hier erg blij mee. We hopen dit nog jaren
te kunnen doen! het draagt bij om ons evenement te
continuëren.
The Redhead Days festival has strong bonds with several
colleges within Breda.The organising team within the Redhead
Days Festival are delighted with this collaboration. We hope
this will develop in the coming years allowing a measure of
continuity in the future.
Sinds vorig jaar werken we met de afdelingen Toerisme en
Recreatie van de Rooi Pannen. De leerlingen van het 2e jaar
werken als dagvrijwilligers bij diverse activiteiten, helpen bij
de informatiestand, merchandise en camping. Afgelopen jaar
hebben zo’n 50 leerlingen van De Rooi Pannen geholpen om
de Redhead Days tot een succes te maken. Dit jaar zullen er
naar verwachting maar liefst 160 leerlingen worden ingezet.
Wij kijken uit naar de tiende editie op 4-5-6 september 2015.
Last year we started to work together with the department of Tourism and Recreation at the Rooi Pannen College. The second year
students participated as volunteers for various activities, helping
out at the info-stand, merchandise shop and the campsite. Last
year approx. 50 Rooi Pannen students helped to make our festival
the success it has become. This year we expect 160 volunteers from
the college who are looking forward to this year’s 10th anniversary
on 4-5-6 September 2015.
Daarnaast helpen de 1e jaars leerlingen van het Cingelcollege
mee met het facilitaire gebeuren op het evenement.
In addition the 1st year students from the Cingelcollege assist us
with facility matters during the event.
Tenslotte helpen studenten van de NHTV mee met de ontwikkeling van de activiteiten tijdens het festival.
Drie Bredaase leer-instituten geven talentvolle studenten
scholing in de organisatie van evenementen, en daar werken
we graag mee samen.
Last but not least the students from the NHTV university have
been helping us develop our core activities.
We are extremely grateful for the participation and collaboration
from these talented students from 3 seats of learning within the
Breda area.
TWINTIGJARIG POPFESTVIAL ERVARING: BREDA BARST
Popfestival Breda Barst bestaat dit jaar alweer twintig jaar, en dat vieren we op
19 en 20 september 2015. Breda Barst staat vol pop, rock, metal, punk, elektro,
hiphop en dance in het Bredase Valkenberg en is gratis. Een mix van regionaal
en lokaal talent en gevestigde artiesten. Dotan, Jet Rebell, Therapy?, Hardwell,
Triggerfinger en nog meer artiesten waren erbij .
Er is ook theater, lekker eten, een markt en kinderactiviteiten. Vrijwilligers zorgen dat Breda Barst er telkens weer staat.. Het festival wil een ‘groen; festival

20 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE POP FESTIVAL BREDA BARST
Pop Festival Breda Barst has been going for 20 years and that’s something to celebrate on 19 en 20 september 2015. The 2 day event takes place in the Valkenberg
Park Breda, showcasing pop, rock, metal, punk, electro, hiphop and dance. A royal
mix of local, regional and established artists will be taking part. Think Dotan, Jet
Rebell, Therapy?, Hardwell, Racoon, The Boxer Triggerfinger and many others have
headlined.
Not only music but theatre, a wide selection of grub and beverages, market and kids
activities are also to be found. Breda Barst is made possible by a dedicated team of
volunteers. We aim to be as ecologically responsible as possible.

Singer-songwriter Marina V : “If the Beatles and Tori Amos
had a child raised in Russia by Tchaikovsky, that would be
me.” Marina V is een Russisch- Amerikaanse pop artieste,
singer songwriter, klassiek geschoold in haar geboortestad
Moskou. Toen ze vijftien jaar oud was, vertrok zij naar Amerika. Ook zal de DJ School Breda optreden.
Singer-songwriter Marina V : “If the Beatles and Tori Amos had a
child raised in Russia by Tchaikovsky, that would be me.” Marina V
is a Russian-American pop artist, singer songwriter, who has
studied classical music in her hometown Moscow. She moved to the
United States at the age of fifteen.
The DJ School Breda will also perform.

take everybody to the park for a picnic. Picnic blankets will be waiting for
you so you can join Bart. On the Kasteelplein you can find a wide range of

Gogh. The witch will come to report on “Fairytalevision”, live from the
Redhead Days.

KIDZPLAZA

Kids kunnen hun hart ophalen op het Kidzplaza, naast het
Kasteelplein/Valkenberg Park, met tal van leuke activiteiten
voor jong en oud.
Samen met Brakkenfestival
Redhead Days werkt dit jaar voor het eerst samen met het
Brakkenfestival on Tour. Deze grote vrijwilligersorganisatie
organiseert elke zomer een week lang kinderactiviteiten.
Brakkenfestival on Tour is een miniversie van het festival op
verschillende locaties, het hele jaar door, begeleid door deskundige vrijwilligers. Kom naar het Schilderplein met echte schilderezels en leer schilderen als Vincent van Gogh. Laat je schminken of
kom cupcakes versieren. Laat een glittertattoo zetten op het
kappersplein. Voor de kleinsten is er op Speelplein kleuterspeelgoed. Actievelingen kunnen bungeejumpen en op de springkussens. Er is een kraam met eendjes vissen, een snoepkraam en een
ranjakoe die ranja tovert. Waar wachten jullie nog op? Een waar
paradijs en als kinderen zich vermaken... doen ouders dat ook...
Kids can eat their hearts out at the Kidzplaza. The Kidzplaza is located
next to Kasteelplein at the entrance of the Valkenberg Park. Here you can
find lots of fun activities for children of all ages.
In co-operation with ‘Brakkenfestival’
This year we started working together with ‘Brakkenfestival on Tour’
which is a known term in and around Breda for years. This big voluntary
organization is famous for an annual festival that takes place for a week
during summer holiday. Brakkenfestival on tour is a mini-version of the
festival at a variety of locations, throughout the whole year, lead by
experienced volunteers. Come to the Painters Corner with painter’s easels
and learn how to paint like Van Gogh, or would you rather have your face
painted? Decorate cupcakes and there is a Hairdressers Plaza where you
can get a glitter tattoo at the Hairdressers Plaza. The young kids can go
wild at the Playground where lots of toys for pre-schoolers and toddlers
can be found. There’s the option to bungee jump or go on the bouncy
castle. You can fish for ducks, find lots of candy and there is a lemonade
cow that can make orange lemonade magically appear.
So what are you waiting for? A true paradise for kids and when the
children have fun… the parents have fun…

LUCIFERS SLAGWERK

Lucifers Slagwerk is een Bredaas slagwerkgroep die in 2012 is
opgericht en sindsdien flink aan de weg timmert. Het opzwepende karakter van ritme en de hypnotiserende werking van de
herhaling worden in alle culturen herkend. Lucifers Slagwerk
speelt met dit gegeven en tast in al haar muzikale ondernemingen de grenzen af van het begrip “slagwerk”. Tegelijkertijd dringt
men al hortend en stotend door tot de kern ervan. Het plezier
spat van het podium af.

Tessa de Boer: De stijl van Tessa de Boer is rock ’n roll gecombineerd met vervreemding. Het verbindt de grens tussen mode en
kunst. De draagbare kunst, zoals Tessa het zelf noemt, vormde
zij geblinddoekt. De creaties zijn sculpturen van stof om het
lichaam (zie het interview op blz.12)
Annicke en Marloes: Winnaars van het televisieprogramma
“Door het oog van de naald.” Volgens Jurylid Maik de Boer
hadden Annicke en Marloes de Wow-factor. Annicke en
Marloes zullen de nieuwe collectie van hun nieuwe label
“after midnight” tonen. Het werk van Robin Zegelaar ontstaat
vanuit verhalende werkwijze, hij diept een thema of verhaal uit
tot een rode draad. Daaruit ontstaan zijn kleuren, vormen en
stofbewerkingen. Kleding bedekt niet alleen het lichaam.Het is
een op het lichaam gedragen expressie vorm.
De getoonde collectie is ontstaan vanuit het thema oceaan
vervuiling, een serieus probleem, vooral door de plasticsoep in
de zee. De collectie is gevuld met spanning en dualiteit, de
boodschap van vervuiling is op hetzelfde moment een esthetisch beeld. Schoonheid, vervreemding als trigger voor bewust
worden van het probleem.

nu in Tilburg. Onlangs succesvol afgestudeerd in modevormgeving bij de Akademie Vogue, Amsterdam. Zij wil met kleding
maken een deel van de mensen helpen. Zij ontwikkelt kledinglijnen, zoekt naar combinatie’s, vorming, design, technieken en
materiaal. Houdt van haute couture, vooral jurken. Zij wil graag
verder studeren in Brussel. In haar op Van Gogh geïnspireerde
collectie ‘The beginning’ gebruikt zij oudere vormen en materialen in combinatie met futuristische accessoires.
René Professional zorgt dit jaar alweer voor de 6e keer voor de
kapsels en visagie van de modellen voor de modeshow.Het team
van enthousiaste kappers en visagisten staan elk jaar weer
garant voor geweldige catwalk creaties.René Professional biedt
met ARTcolor speciale haarverzorgingsproducten voor roodharigen en de organische lijn PureRené heeft een compleet spectrum aan verzorgings en stylingsproducten.Op beide dagen
heeft René Professional een mini-kapsalon op het verwenplein
waar, naast het vragen van advies, ook de producten ervaren en
getest kunnen worden.
Tessa de Boer: ‘My style is a combination of rock ‘n roll with a hint of
alienation. It connects fashion to art. This wearable art, as Tessa calls
it, was created whilst she was blindfolded. The creations are sculptures
of fabric around the body (see interview on page 12).
Annicke and Marloes: The winners of a Dutch tv show called “Door het
oog van de naald” (Through the eye of the needle). According to the judge
Maik de Boer Annicke and Marloes have the wow-factor. Annicke and
Marloes will show their new collection of their new fashion brand “After
midnight”. The details on the collection will remain a surprise.
Robin van Zegelaar’s work is based on a storyline method studying a
subject in depth which becomes the general theme of his collection. His
colours, shapes and adaptation of materials are inspired by these
themes. Clothes are there not just to cover one’s body but as a form of
expression by the wearer. The collection on show was inspired by the
theme of ocean pollution, a serious environmental problem, highlighting
the designers views of a plastic soup in our seas and oceans.
Filled with tension and duality this year’s collection exposes the problems
of ocean pollution but still allows the designer to express an aesthetic
image. Both beauty and alienation acting as a trigger to our conscience
making us aware of this important environmental problem.
Forte: The new Forte offers a balanced mix of women’s clothing brands
such as Pinko, Liu Jo, Twin Set, Michael Kors, Guess, Guess by
Marciano, Enes, Mucho Gusto, Hale Bob, SVNTY sneakers and En
Shalla bags. You can also get yourself restyled following to the latest
trends and adjusted to your own style and character. As an introduction
to the brand there is a styling night every Thursday night in September.

Yemnys Subero Saldivia is a 38 year old designer originally from
Venezuela but now living in Tilburg in the Netherlands. She successfully
graduated in Fashion Design from the Vogue Academy in Amsterdam.
Fashion is his passion. Her vision incorporates making apparel through
which she is able to help people. She is currently busy in designing
clothing lines, shaping, design, developing techniques and fabrics. She
adores haute couture in particular dresses. To enable herself to progress,
develop and get the best out of herself in her chosen trade she wants to
continue her studies in Brussels. She wants to achieve as much as she
can and to allow herself to master her craft to the best of his abilities. She
refers to herself as a perfectionist, goal oriented and always delivers on
time. She knows what she wants. This collection is inspired by Vincent
van Gogh. Vintage shapes and fabrics are utilised in combination with
futuristic accessories. The theme of the collection is “the beginning”.
This year also, René Professional takes care of hair and visagie of
the Fashion show models. It is the sixth time in a row. His team of
enthusiastic hairdressers and make-up artists guarantees terrific catwalk

preview of the history of redheads which started 50.000 years ago.

Dit jaar is de poort open gemaakt naar de sprookjeswereld, zodat verschillende figuren een kijkje kunnen

Eigenwijzer Dans Akademie bestaat ruim 6 jaar
met de grootste locatie in Oosterhout, een
locatie in Teteringen en Wagenberg.
Een team van 6 docenten verzorgen hier de
lessen: van Afrodance tot Modern, van jong tot
oud. Alles kan!!
De dansschool heeft een aantal teams, duo’s en
solisten die op hoger niveau wedstrijddansen.
Zo heeft D’Junelle van Bussel (10 jaar) al 2
keer de 1e prijs mogen behalen bij de Europese
Kampioenschappen, maar ook haar team
Element of Freedom werd in 2014 3e op het EK.
De dansers scoren goed binnen Nederland en
Europa, maar dat komt vooral door het plezier
wat ze beleven door dans.
