PREFACE
The Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet) of the Department of
Biotechnology is spread across the country with more than 170 institutions. The network
centres are in various levels which include Centres of Excellence, Distributed Information
Centres, Distributed Information Sub Centres and Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facilities for
Biology
Teaching
through
Bioinformatics
(BIF-BTBI).
The
network
also
covers
Supercomputer facilities for big data analytics, Interactive Graphics Facility, M.Sc. &
M. Tech. in Bioinformatics Computational and System Biology. Large number of R&D
projects in Bioinformatics is also being supported through this programme. All these
activities are being coordinated by the Apex BTIC which is located in the DBT head quarter.
The BTISnet centers are conducting short term trainings/workshops for the benefit of
Research community. During the year 2015-16, Fifty Two such programs are envisaged in
nine different subject areas. The readers can identify their interest of training programs
through the subject area which are listed under the “List of Trainings/ Workshops”. For
availing these one can approach the institutions directly as per the format given. Some
Centres may also be advertising it in the Newspapers as well as on their websites. A list
showing “Calendar at a Glance” is also appended as part of this publication for displaying it
on Notice Boards.

OBJECTIVES: The next challenge of post genomic era is to understand how all the molecules and their
interaction between them determine the function within a living cell. The High Throughput
Technologies (HTT) generates a huge amount of data in an exponential rate and overflows the
databases. The network biology deals with summarizing the biological systems as components
(nodes) and their interaction (edges).Nodes represents the metabolites and macromolecules such as
protein, RNA, genes while edges represents physical, biochemical and functional interaction. The
network biology focuses on integrating these large data sets and combining them with all available
functional data to draw inferences about the functions. Teaching the network generation, analysis
and functional annotation provides an insight to the participants how network biology offer a new
conceptual framework that could potentially revolutionize our view of biology and disease
pathologies in the twenty-first century.
CONTENTS: The Training will include but not limited to:
Introduction to Network Biology, Gene Expression Databases, Protein-Protein Interaction(PPI)
databases, Gene Ontology, Basic hands-on on network generation and various ways of
representation, functional annotation.
