DCCA President’s Message
Well, it’s November, and our northern friends should be arriving shortly. It will be
good to renew our friendships, and begin to prepare for Thanksgiving. Deep
Creek has much to be thankful for this year. We have seen many miles of new
sidewalks installed and many miles of new pavement laid down. Section 23 has
also begun their cul-de-sac improvement project. I think they will complete
around 10 this year with more to follow. There are approximately 100 cul-desacs in section 23. From what I heard, the residents are very pleased.
Section 20 still has their feral hog problem, but they got our County Commissioner who lives in Deep Creek, involved. There will be a hunt beginning in November and another in January. Let’s hope this helps remediate the problem.
Our section 20 residents are pretty tired of having their yards dug up by these
hogs. See the article on page 7 for more details.
I received an e-mail from one of our members last month asking why we support
the Do the Right Thing program that meets in Punta Gorda. That was a great
question that perhaps many of our members were wondering about. The program was started by a PGPD officer many years ago, and is run by volunteer
PGPD officers. The program encompasses all of Charlotte County. The people
that attend the meetings run the gamut from representatives from Senator Rubio,
our congressmen, Charlotte County board, local Punta Gorda council members
and many of the program sponsors. There is always a standing room only crowd,
with presentations made by many of our elected representatives. There have
been many Deep Creek children that have won the award, and the DCCA is proud
to be a Captain’s level sponsor. I appreciate any member taking the time to ask

There is an article in this month’s newsletter by our Neighborhood Watch coordinator, Pete McGarry. Make sure you take the time to read it. Pete donates his
time, as all the NW volunteers do, to make our community a safer place. They
really need some help from volunteers, so give it some thought.

OUR SEASONAL CHORES...FALL 2013
FALL, it’s a Florida gardeners favorite season. It’s cooler and
less humid and the ground is warm and very accepting of new
plantings. Here are a few suggestions to make gardening this
fall a great experience with beautiful results.
DIVIDE AND REPLANT CROWDED PERENNIALS. After dividing
the clumps plant and water immediately.
PLANT BULBS. Because the ground is still warm, fall is the perfect time for planting bulbs of all sorts. Consider African Iris,
Amaryllis, Blackberry Lily, Blood Lily, Calla, Clivia, Crinum, Elephant’s Ear, and other irises and lilies.
PLANT ROSES. Choose only roses grafted on certified Rosa
fortuniana rootstock which is totally different from rootstock of
Roses up north. Check the tag when purchasing. This particular rootstock is friendly to Florida gardens and they will thrive
nicely and last many years.
PLANT PERMANENT LANDSCAPE PLANTS. Perfect time for
planting new trees, shrubs, vines, perennials and ground covers.
PLANT VEGETABLES. Such as broccoli, beets, kale, cabbage,
carrots, cauliflower, kohlrabi, mustard, onions, peas, rutabagas,
spinach, turnips and tomatoes. Late October, plant your strawberries in well composted soil.

PLANT HERBS. Homegrown herbs are the best. Try planting
chives, garlic chives, dill, oregano, lemon balm, fennel, rosemary, cilantro, parsley, thyme, tarragon, and chervil, just to
name a few.
STARVE YOUR BOUGAINVILLEA!! This is important. If you
want your bougainvillea to bloom next summer, stop fertilizing
and watering them now and begin again in spring. Sounds
harsh but it works.
WATERING Reprogram your automatic watering system when
the weather cools. Water terra-cotta planters more than plants
grown in plastic or glazed ceramic pots. Remember, plants in
terra-cotta, water once for the pot then once again for the
plant.
CATERPILLARS!!!! For some reason the caterpillar populations
soar in the fall. Keep a look out for them and use a organic
biological spray or a drench of the organic insecticide Bt (Dipel)
for best control.
The holiday season is sneaking up on us slowly, so get out and
enjoy the weather and happy gardening.

Reminder - The DCCA annual meeting will be held at the Deep Creek Elks on Capricorn Tuesday, Dec 3rd at 7:00 PM .
Take a Walk - Join the newly formed Deep Creek Walkers! Meet Wednesday evenings at 6:00 in the parking lot on
Sandhill Blvd (Emils, Cathy's Pet, DC Florist etc are in there).
We have new sidewalks in Deep Creek, let's use them!, If we start at Emil's we can end up there for Wed night Bingo if
you're interested. Bingo is at 8pm. Please park in the middle of the lot so the open businesses have parking.

Happy Holidays - 2013 is indeed an unusual year. For the first time ever the first day of the Jewish holiday Chanukah
will fall on Thanksgiving day. This convergence of the two holidays will not happen again for 70,000 years. So we would
like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and to our Jewish friends a very Happy Chanukah.
The Neighborhood Watch Committee meets on the first Tuesday of
the month in Section 23 building at
4:00 P.M. If you take a walk every
day, your eyes could prevent a burglary or you could keep
tabs on someone who is
ill or in distress. An hour
or two as you take your
daily walk could make a
huge difference. Come
in for refreshments and
see what we’re all about.
We’re Here to Help
The DCCA Garden Club is offering gardening assistance
to all of our Deep Creek neighbors. Experienced DCCA
Garden Club volunteers will visit your home and try to
answer any questions you may have about your own
personal landscape. Suggestions as to the types of appropriate plantings, where to plant and how to plant will
be made available. This visit will be by appointment only
and should take about an hour. There will not be a
charge for this service, as we are only supplying ideas.
Residents are free to make donations (by check) to the
Civic Association for the garden club. All donated funds
will be used for the upkeep of the Deep Creek entrances
and future projects to beautify our community. Please
remember that these will be merely recommendations
and suggestions for your personal landscape. If you are

Trick-or-Treat
Featured Recipe form the Deep Creek Cookbook
Pumpkin Cheesecake
Crust:
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup ground or chopped pecans
2 T sugar
2 T brown sugar
2 stick melted butter
Mix well and firmly press mixture into 9-inch springform plan lightly spayed with PAM. Bake at 350 for 5 minutes.
Cool while making the filling.
Fillling:
1 8 oz cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3 eggs
2 T all purpose flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp grated orange rind (optional)
1 16 oz can pumpkin
1/4 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp ground ginger
Beat cream cheese, gradually add sugar, mixing until light and fluffy and sugar is dissolved. Add eggs one at a time,
beating well after each addition. Combine flour and spices and stir together well, then add to cream cheese mixture
beating well. Add pumpkin and vanilla mixing well. Pour batter into the springform pan and bake at 350 for 55 minutes. Let cool before topping is added.
Topping:
8 oz Cool Whip
1/4 c sour cream
1 T grated orange rind
1/4 c confectioners' sugar or more to make topping stiff
Mix all well and place in pastry bag or Ziploc bag with corner snipped off and pipe it onto the cheesecake. Sprinkle a
few chopped pecans on top of the piping.

Feral Hog Hunt Announced
The Southwest Florida Water Management District has announced two hunts to reduce the feral hog
population that has plagued Section 20 property owners. Section 20 property owners contacted their resident County Commissioner, Ken Doherty about the problem. Doherty contacted state representative to
make sure that funding for the hunts was restored. The hunts will take place in 2000 acre Deep Creek
Preserve that borders Section 20 on north.
Hunters will need permits and the registration was only open for 10 minutes on Oct. 7 before all 202 permits were issued. The preserve will be closed except for hunters from Nov 19 - 21. A second hunt is
scheduled for Feb 2 - 4, 2014 with a permit registration date of Jan 13. The refuge will be closed to the
public during the hunt.
The purpose of the hunt is to reduce the population. Fewer hogs will mean more food in the refuge during the dry season and reduce the pressure on the remaining hogs to roam further afield to find it. Hopefully a couple of successful hunts will mean a quieter, less destructive dry season in Section 20.
Eliminating the hogs altogether is impossible. They have been here since the Spanish explorers brought
them to Florida in the 1500s. They reproduce at a high rate, having up to three litters of 6 - 8 piglets per
litter in 14 months. They also have no predators except for man.

As you can see, this is a year of great progress in all of Deep Creek. The sidewalks, the road paving, the
work on the Desoto Canal and the cul de sacs are all moving along at a visible pace. We can thank the
work of the POA Sections 20, 23 and Harbor Heights, working together with the county Public Works department and the County Commissioners. Finally Deep Creek is receiving due reconigition and some return for our tax dollars. If you have any questions on these projects, please call the office and someone
will get back to you. 941-764-6674.
I attended the Section 20 Board meeting in September and they reported that they seem to have a
pretty good handle on the wild pigs that were roaming the east areas. The pigs were digging up the
lawns and driving the neighborhood pets crazy. I attended their meeting to report on our new plan for
the empty lots. In the past we have handled the empty lot cutting with independent contractors. Each lot
owner who does not want to cut their grass themselves has hired someone to cut their empty lot. The
POA has had nothing to with the empty lot cutting. As a result, the lots were not being cut and the lot
owners were ripped off. The contracts called for eight (8) cuttings per year and some lots were only cut
three (3) times. And there was no uniformity in the cutting. It has been a mess.
Well that is about to change. We are going to cut the empty lots. We have sent out a survey, as we have
in the past, and we will cut the empty lots of those who want us to do so. The lot owners who choose
cut their own lots may continue to cut their lots or hire someone to do the cutting. For those who want
the POA to cut their lots we will hire a contractor to cut the lots and we will bill the lot owners. The contractor(s) will work for the POA and will be accountable to the POA. We will have inspectors policing the
contract with the lawn cutters. We feel with this new program, the lots will be cut much better and we
will have an overall better looking community.
On a separate subject, I would like to ask for more people to join the Neighborhood Watch Program. Our
community needs more people to be looking out for each other while we are out doing our every day
thing. We are out in the community walking our dogs, riding bikes, jogging or just walking on our new
sidewalks. We can all be Neighborhood Watch People.
All we have to do is formalize our outdoor activity by attending the Neighborhood Watch meeting to sign
up and learn how. The Program has a meeting once a month at the Section 23 office. You do not need to
attend all of the meetings. It is recommended that you attend in the beginning so that you may learn
how to interact with the Sheriff’s office. (The Police). You learn the dos and the don’ts. You become the
“Eyes and Ears” of the Community. You only report and the police do the rest. But you become a community asset while you are out there doing what you do anyway. If you might be interested, call to inquire. Think about it. You are needed. You can help.

A Note From The Neighborhood Watch Coordinator
I would like to invite our Section 20 and Section 23 POA members to attend our regular monthly
Neighborhood Watch meeting the first Tuesday of each month at 4pm in the Section 23 POA building on
Rampart Blvd.
There is no commitment to be a regular attendee of these meetings to be a member of the
Neighborhood Watch Committee. You do need to fill out an application and agree to the standards of
conduct required while on patrol. That's all there is to it!
We are the eyes and ears of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office (“CCSO”). Our focus is on calling
and alerting the CCSO to suspicious or criminal activity or safety concerns that we may observe while
walking or driving through our community. We have no schedules for patrolling-we just fit it into our
normal routines i.e. walking our dogs, getting our daily exercise etc.
We are not enforcers of the Deed Restrictions-those are civil matters outside our area of responsibility.
We can, as residents, call in any violations to the respective POA if we wish but in our capacity as
residents rather than as Neighborhood Watch members.
At our meetings a CCSO Deputy attends and gives us an update on happenings and security tips.
You will find that the DCCA and our POAs are very supportive of our activities - offering good
guidance, letting us use the facilities and helping out with acquiring signs, etc. We are grateful for
having such a good relationship.
So stop by at our meeting and fill out an application or stop by the Section 23 POA office and fill one out
there at your convenience.
