Assisting Ed was Joel Peterson, his teenage apprentice. Joel brought his shop made shaving horse and was put to work shaping one of the saw parts. Ed brought his traveling workbench and hand tools demonstrating that you can be very efficient and productive in your shop without power tools. Thanks Ed for an engaging and instructive program. 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 3 Show and Tell Time The club is continuing to grow! Our membership is climbing, there are more tours and events, and Show N Tell is getting bigger. It’s great to see all the items made during this part of the meeting. The skill involved, the time spent, and the pride people have while talking about their work makes everyone smile. However, the increased number of articles is taking more time. As a result, we would like to provide a bit of a regimen to ensure we can provide equal time to each person’s bragging rights. What we would like is to use an agenda to work through each showing. Here are the guidelines: 1. Bring all you want to show, talk about your favorite one. Feel free to describe the others before the meeting, during the break, or after the meeting. 2. Let us know why you made it, what kind of wood you used, any special joinery that you utilized, the finish applied, and one other favorite aspect you like about your piece. 3. For any other attributes or stories about the article, save them for the break time. In this way everyone can have equal time to talk, we can use the Show N Tell time more efficiently, and we can enjoy everyone’s handiwork. Is your project too big to bring to Show and Tell?? For projects just too large to bring in, bring a jpeg photo file (.jpg) instead. One or two photos will do, in keeping with our need for brevity. You could also make a short slideshow using MS Powerpoint. Again, please keep it to a couple of slides. The best way to give us your photo or Powerpoint files would be on a USB flash drive. Bring it in early so we can load it into the laptop before the meeting starts. Thanks. Big Raffle Veritas® Mk.II Deluxe Honing Guide Set Includes standard and narrow-blade clamping head, straight roller base, camber roller base and skew registration jig. A $120 value. Common sense will prevail 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 5 Well, Christmas is almost upon us. WHAT!!!! Have you looked at your calendar lately? We have six months – that is, of course, if you intend to BUY all those Christmas presents. If not, you might consider browsing through the club library to get some ideas for things you can create in your shop. For instance, you might want to peruse B240 – Holiday Gifts You Can Make from Wood Magazine or B332 - 101 Gift Projects From Wood from James Jacobson. There could be some nice ideas there. If you want something a little more challenging, B256 - Making Elegant Custom Tables by Doug Stowe and B481 - Making Elegant Gifts From Wood by Kerry Pierce might give some ideas – and you still have six months. The club has 58 different books on woodworking projects, everything from The Complete Guide To Easy Woodworking Projects to Classics From The New Yankee Workshop, so feel free to look through the library to see if there might be some Christmas inspiration. 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 6 Shop Tours 6-27-16 Information Note: Some information below has changed from prior shop tour information. Sharpening Sharpening woodworking tools can be undertaken in lots of ways and with many different types of abrasives. No matter what abrasive is used, all sharpening techniques have a couple of traits in common. One is friction. The blade has to rubbed against the abrasive. Secondly, the angle of the blade must be consistent while we are doing the rubbing. A big difference in sharpening is the abrasive. The first aspect of this difference is the abrasive type. It may already be put together naturally like the silica in an Arkansas whetstone. Another type is pressed together with bonding cement through the miracle of science like a Tormek man-made stone. It may be the abrasive is pieces of diamond bonded to a metal surface or put into a paste. Finally, we can have abrasive pieces cemented to a sheet of paper or fabric like our conventional sandpaper. Here is a note of importance; all of these types of abrasives can result in very similar results when all other variables are the same. Another difference is the grit of the abrasive. If the particle size is labeled as P6,000 by the United States CAMI (Coated Abrasive Manufacturers Institute) the actual size of the abrasive is 4µm. The smaller the particle size, the smaller the scratch mark on the metal or wood and the lesser the material removed. This smaller size allows for a smoother surface thus more light reflection and the high shine instead of scratch or swirl marks. Except for diamond abrasive, friability plays a part in sanding too. This is most attributable to aluminum oxide. By definition, friable is the ability to break and fragment in order to expose a sharper edge. Doing so renews the surface and prolongs the ability to continue removing material be it metal or wood. This all brings to attention the chisels sharpened by various means. Different abrasives were used, and the methods used to apply the abrasives to metal were different as well. The presentation for July will show the comparisons. I hope you find them interesting. 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 9 Howard's Corner with Howard Van Valzah Aka: The Woodorker Johnson Creek Hardwood – JCH – Fine hardwood lumber | Kiln-dried hardwood lumber, natural edged lumber, live edged slabs, bookmatched slabs, highly figured lumber, Nakashima style slabs, red oak, white oak, black cherry, walnut, ash, American chestnut http://www.johnsoncreekhardwoods.com/ This wood supplier is quite a ways from Batavia , but I have found them to be a great source for very fine domestic boards and lots of it. My experience says they are about 20% less than the local hardwood stores and their quality is excellent and they are very nice people. Not a bad idea to call ahead of a visit to get good directions to find the place and to be sure they will be there on the day you want to go. I know some of our members have been there but others might not know about it and this attachment could familiarize them with the place if you decide to put it months club distribution list. Howard 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 10 Stacking Sawhorse Bench I picked up an old woodworking magazine at one of our meetings and found an article showing a great stacking sawhorse-bench combo. Separate, the pieces make two very sturdy sawhorses and stacked, they make a nice small work Lee bench. The sawhorses are made from construction lumber - two 10 ft 2 x 12’s, two 8 ft 2 x 4’s, and about 6 ft of 1 x 6 pine. While I had some difficulty finding decent flat lumber at the big box store, after some sorting through the pile I found a few acceptable boards. The total cost was around $30. The benches took me only a couple of hours to make and will replace some wobbly old 2 x 4 sawhorses I have had for many years. They will be nice to use at a jobsite as a work bench, will be stable and safe stepping stools for home repair, and of course are rock solid shop sawhorses. When I am building case furniture, I like to elevate the case to a more convenient height. My old sawhorses were too tall and unstable to do this; these benches will support anything I am likely to make. You can fine tune the leg lengths to use the stacked bench as an infeed or outfeed support for your table saw. Or, just adjust the design to your desired sawhorse and bench height. If you are interested in building your own, the article is in the April / May 2014 American Woodworker magazine. 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 11 SHOW AND TELL June 7, 2016 Meeting Alan Malmstrom Project: CNC Carvings Wood: Red Oak & Sapele Finish: Poly / Mahogany Poly Sue Batdorf Project: Carved Spoon & Fork Wood: Cherry Finish: Will be mineral oil 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 12 SHOW AND TELL June 7, 2016 Meeting Arnie Bandstra Project: Room divider panel Wood: Bubinga Finish: none Note: Replacement is the lower panel Tony Evansky Project: Toy monoplane & biplane Wood: Poplar Finish: none Note: Plans from St. Petersburg Woodcrafters Guild 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 13 SHOW AND TELL June 7, 2016 Meeting Wayne Maier Project: Shop Stool Wood: Walnut & Ash Finish: Oil / Varnish 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 14 SHOW AND TELL June 7, 2016 Meeting Lee Nye Project: Scrapwood Boxes Wood: Cherry, Poplar, Walnut Finish: satin poly Jeff Walsma Project: Beer Caddy Wood: Pine from pallets Finish: rub on finish 2016 FVWWC—PO Box 1047—Batavia, IL 60510-1047 http://www.fwwc.org — [email protected] 15 ShopSmith SIG September 6, 2016 The ShopSmith SIG will meet September 6th, 2016 at 6:30.
