Did you also know that the Freedom Festival is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation that is paid for by button sales, corporate, and private contributions? Freedom Festival relies on you and our community. Go to freedomfestival.com, and click on “Get Involved” for complete details on how to become a Friend of the Festival. 2 319 365 8313 • 609 1st Avenue SW • Cedar Rapids, Iowa • 52405 Sponsored by Clean Up CR Managing the trash at events is a mammoth task and several volunteer teams will help again this year to Clean Up CR. The Festival’s Clean Up CR program, sponsored by Cargill, diverts a substantial amount of garbage from landfills and focuses on promoting recycling at our events. Win–Win–Win Volunteer Program Sponsored by Toyota Financial, this award winning program helps Freedom Festival recruit needed volunteers and, in return, thousands of dollars are donated to the volunteers’ charity of choice. It’s a win-win-win! Safety First! The behind the scene logistics of putting on a festival are complicated and costly. Managing street closures, directional signage, safety, medical personnel, building security, and disaster plans are key to a successful and safe event. Freedom Festival is grateful for the sponsorship of MidAmerican Energy and ITC Midwest to underwrite this critical part of the festival. Ride the city bus for free A partnership between Freedom Festival and CR Transit makes it possible for the Freedom Festival button wearers to ride the bus free during the festival. So, grab your neighbor and some friends and ride the city bus to the events. Executive Director FreedomFestival.com • Presented by 3 Staff Robyn Rieckhoff Liz Neff Freedom Festival, Events and Marketing Director It is gratifying to observe how the festival has developed into a community tradition. Our nonprofit corporation provides the opportunity for residents, businesses, and public organizations to unite and celebrate our nation’s birthday. Freedom Festival, Executive Director As a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, I take pride in our community and am delighted we can bring families together at this series of great events — The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival. Enjoy! Board of Directors Mark Hixson Erika Elles Business Solutions Group, Inc. 4th of July Celebration, what an awesome opportunity to bring the community together in a family friendly atmosphere while celebrating the freedom to do so! Cargill, Inc. I cannot pick a favorite event — I LOVE THEM ALL! What is your favorite Freedom Festival event? Executive Committee Stephanie A. Edson Jonathan Cormier GE Capital It is very hard to choose one, so listed are a few of my favorites. The Balloon Glow, Freedom Parade, downtown on the 4th of July, and Tribute to Heroes. The entire festival is very impressive. It is wonderful to see all the people enjoy the events and how we come together as a community. Toyota Financial Services If I had to pick a favorite event, it would be the Balloon Glow because its a great scene with families sitting on the front lawn of Historic Brucemore, listening to live music as the balloons fill up and light up the night sky! Josh Streets Angela Jordan US Cellular Our family enjoys the kid friendly activities like Imagination Square spending time having fun with family/ friends. ITC Midwest I enjoy the pancake breakfast early morning on the 4th of July. Lisa McMillenBose Lori Arbuckle Sam’s Club I love the DockDogs event. I helped to get Sam’s Club to sponsor the first year in 2012. I work with rescues and shelters to foster dogs to get them a forever home and have a love for dogs. Jessica Fergesen Cedar Rapids Kernels My favorite event is Movie Night at the Ballpark. It is great to see families enjoying a movie at Veterans Memorial Stadium under the night sky! 4 Kristy Staker Jody Donaldson Cedar Rapids and Marion Hy-Vee It’s tough to pick just one, but I’m a fan of the 4th. I love the atmosphere downtown and of course, the fireworks! 319 365 8313 • Prairie Ridge Estates Tribute to Heroes Dinner — there are so many unsung heroes in the community working hard but don’t always get the credit and recognition. Their stories are always inspirational and heartwarming. Kirkwood Community College My favorite Freedom Festival event is the fireworks. It is the grand finale, the best ending after two weeks of fabulous activities. I love the energy it brings to downtown, the array of people that come and the firework show itself is always spectacular. 609 1st Avenue SW • Cedar Rapids, Iowa • 52405 Farmers State Bank The Balloon Glow is my favorite event because we have attended this event every year since our first child (Ava) was born. We really enjoy the live music and the atmosphere that comes with that! Clinton Brady Northwestern Mutual I really enjoy the fireworks on the 4th…. It is a great atmosphere downtown with the music and all the people. Ann Virden Merrill Lynch My favorite Freedom Festival event is Balloon Glow. I love seeing the colorful balloons lit up on historic Brucemore lawn. It’s great to see thousands of people come out for the event and enjoy what Cedar Rapids has to offer. Sarika Bhakta Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance Favorite Freedom Festival event is a tie between the spectacular Fourth of July fireworks and the exciting Balloon Glow. Ex-Officio Jason Pasker Peter R. Teahen Teahen Funeral Home The Celebration of Freedom. I love the sense of community as thousands gather together to celebrate July 4th with fellowship, music, and fireworks. Jonathan Lam Sam Jones Shuttleworth & Ingersoll Balloon Glow. It is very cool to see 15,000 people listening to music, touring Brucemore, and generally having a great time. Heather Wilson The Eastern Iowa Airport My favorite Freedom Festival event is the parade. I remember growing up in a smaller town that had HUGE parades. It was such a wonderful part of my childhood that I love continuing that tradition in Cedar Rapids. I love looking at the kid’s faces along the street light up. Parades truly create a sense of community in an immensely positive and tangible way. Interns Brooks Kehoe • University of Iowa Kady Light • University of Iowa Dylan Youel • Coe College FreedomFestival.com • Presented by Schneider Electric Freedom to Build — Lego Extravaganza: This event provides a great opportunity for kids to showcase their creative side and help cultivate team work and communication skills as they work to complete the challenge in a group. What a great event to engage the Eastern Iowa community through this safe and fun learning experience for kids and parents. Laurel Day Cedar Rapids Community School District My favorite event is Balloon Glow because it’s a time where families come together for good old fashion fun, a picnic on the grounds of beautiful Brucemore, great music, and the sound/color of the balloons as they light up the neighborhood! Mission Statement The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival, Inc., a non-profit organization, celebrates the quality of life in Eastern Iowa by providing safe, affordable, and fun annual events that embody the spirit of patriotism and a sense of community and family. 5 2014 Schedule of Events Flag Day – Freedom Festival’s Flag Raising Ceremony 9 AM - 9:30 AM Downtown CR • across from Vets Memorial Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival freedomfestival.com FREE Wednesday June 18 Cedar Rapids Municipal Band 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM Bowman Woods School City of Cedar Rapids • crmuniband.org FREE Thursday June 19 Tribute to Heroes 6 PM - 10 PM The Hotel at Kirkwood Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival Tickets available at freedomfestival.com Thursday June 19 Tribute to Heroes Dinner Keynote Speaker Colonel Greg Hapgood Director of Public Affairs Iowa National Guard The Hotel at Kirkwood Center 6 PM Jump for Freedom — DockDogs Aquatic Dog Jumping Competition Five Seasons Ski Team – Water Ski Show 7 PM - 8 PM Cedar River • Ellis Park Five Seasons Ski Team • 5sst.com FREE R&L Marine, Evinrude Outboards, Z102.9 and Cedar Rapids Photocopy Kirkwood Community College 9 AM – 6 PM THE MIKADO 7:30 PM - 10 PM Brucemore on the Lawn Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre cr-opera.org $20 / $1 off with button Great America Leasing Corporation, Giacoletto Foundation, Alliant Energy, ACT Inc, and Margaret Haupt Photo by Jim Zelasko Saturday June 14 June 20 – 22 Friday June 20 DockDogs 9 AM - 6 PM Kirkwood Community College Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival freedomfestival.com FREE with button Register your dog at dockdogs.com Freedom to Build: Lego Extravaganza 10 AM - 6 PM NewBo City Market Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival freedomfestival.com FREE with button Admission: FREE with Saturday June 21 June 20 – 22 Run or Dye LEGO Freedom to Build 9 AM – 12 PM Kirkwood Community College Run or Dye runordye.com $47/person Coupon code: RODFREEDOM for $5 off!
