Our vision of education extends far beyond the classroom. We encourage our students to involve themselves in the broad co-curricular programme we offer here. Students have the opportunity to participate fully on the sports field, on the stage, in the leadership activities, vocational education and training courses, on the debating platform and many other forums. Students can pursue their interests and strengths to the best of their abilities, and are encouraged to achieve their personal best. We are proud of our record and of our success in helping students achieve their dreams once they leave the college. We expect high standards in all that we do at Edwardes College. Edwardes Chronicles has done a great job once again. I want to congratulate the Chronicles team on the publication of their third issue. Keep it up! AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM (TO THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD) Prof. Brig. (r) Dr. Nayer Fardows Principal EDITORIAL BOARD (Sitting L to R) Mashal Ejaz, Mr. Irfan Ullah Khan (Advisor), Prof. Alwin Edwin (HoD English), Prof. Dr. Nayer Fardows (Principal), Ms. Myra (Editor), Sami Uddin (Student Editor), Mona Younas (Standing L to R) Allah Yar Khan Tareen, Abbas Hussain, Mohsin Abbas, Ihsan Ullah, Hassan Raza, Zeeshan Khan, Muhammad Usman, Muhammad Jamal Khan, Alamgir Khan. A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers, From Wuthering Heights to The Alchemist, from David Copperfield to The Forty Rules of Love, from The Mayor of Casterbridge to The Reluctant Fundamentalist love for reading and literature has always been a forte of Edwardians. That is why when I see students on the campus with a book in their hands, other than their text books, I feel Edwardes has really accomplished its task i.e. the task of cultivating the habit of reading. Besides, it’s not just about reading but also about sharing the knowledge one gains. Looking at students exchanging books, having discussions about Dan Brown’s latest novel or arguing about whether Khalid Hoseni writes better than Mohsin Hamid, give the teachers a certain satisfaction about the students being on the right track. This year, many such activities took place which gave a boost to the students’ intellectual ability. Societies like Halqa Ahl-e-Qalam, Dramatic Society, 2 Debating Society, Pashto Society, Literary Society and Book Club, which is still in its embryonic stage, contributed immensely to the intellectual development of the students. In the Flashback, you will get to know about all the events that took place in the college. Moreover, interesting Highlights from this session are also included. Moments of Pride celebrates and acknowledges the efforts of those students who performed remarkably in various fields. For this issue, I would like to underscore my sincere appreciation for the Chronicles team. I am awestruck by their dedication and creativity. My special gratitude goes to the Principal Prof Dr Nayer Fardows, to Associate Professor A. Here are some spur of the moment responses by the Edwardians: Slogan of Back benchers? Times up! (Rabia Shah, 4C1) Sir is absent (Elum, 4B) When will the bell ring? (Sania Shah, 4P) Enough for today (Hamid, 4C1) Free classes should be of…? Football (Muhammad Arif, 4C2) Music (Mujeeb Ullah, 2E3) Ethics and Morals (Mian Sajjad, 2M4) What are you afraid of? Snakes (Zaara, 3C1) Fake people (Mohsin Khan, 4C1) Beautiful women (Ertaza Abbas, BCS 4 Term) Oblivion and regretting the past in old age (M. Farooq Khan Niazi, 2E1) Teachers’ Voice When teachers were asked to describe their personality in a few words, this is what they had to say: Love for all Sir Ijaz (Urdu Department) Hard Worker Ma’am Sameera (Chemistry Department) Dynamic Sir Hamid (Political Science Department) Care taker Prof Nasim Haider (Biology Department) Friendly (with students) Sir Shahzad Dilshad (English Department) Feminist Ma’am Myra (English Department) Students’ Views: Sir Shahid Iqbal (Chemistry Department) - Educator of Soul Sir Khan Niaz (HoD Biology Department) - Radiant Magician Edwardes College Peshawar 15 From the Diary of an Edwardian Poets’ Arena Deceived by the Flame I’ve seen the demons burn in hell, Along with me and the words I spell, Never wanted to be the one, To reach out and stand above the sun. I was left with no other choice, No one ever wanted to hear my voice. I was deceived by the flame; I wanted to live and stay the same. If not you then who is to blame? I was deceived by the flame. The fire can’t feel my pain, My efforts are going down like tears in rain, Give me a moment to explain, I was the one deceived by the flame. (By Syed Talha, 3C1) Participating in this year’s drama was like a roller coaster ride for me with all its ups and downs. Working with the team of Les Miserables was so much fun and learning for the drama cast. As for me, acting is not something which I could be boastful about but Sir Shamoon and Sir Nasir Iqbal greatly brushed up my skills and spilled a new spectrum of talent and positive energy in me. Without them, it was not possible for the character of “Fantine” to come into existence. I still remember, Sir Shamoon was always encouraging me to act to the best of my ability and now and then he would say ‘act in a way that you should make people stand and clap for you like Valjean’. Alhumdulillah, finally I did it as per their expectation. The sight of old hall still leaves me with nostalgic feelings of the beautiful memories of the drama Les Miserables, which I will always cherish in my life and keep it alive in my heart.
