2013 Agenda and Attendees - South Carolina International Trade

My observation of the conference is that it excels in two prime areas: It brings to our area topical speakers who
challenge the entire international transportation and trade community to heightened professionalism. It also provides a
time and place where transportation and trade officials and associates can come together and get to know each other
better.
People will always find a way to do business with someone who brings value to the table. The conference is the
perfect venue for improved understanding of each other’s situation and needs. This was why the conference was created
in the latter part of 1973 and the goal has never changed. South Carolina is a great place to do business and our
international community is a showcase for our nation. The Conference is a chief catalyst in conveying this message to the
world.
Ron Plunkett
SCITC General Chairman, 1977
FORTY YEAR HISTORY OF SC INTERNATIONAL TRADE CONFERENCE
The first South Carolina International Trade Conference (SCITC) was held in 1974 at the Mills House with additional
functions at the Hibernian Hall. The following year the conference was held at the same location.
Years 1975 through 1986, the conference was held at the Gailliard Auditorium. Other relative functions were also held
there.
In 1987 the conference had to leave Gailliard because Spoleto’s growth required the facility. The conference moved to the
Omni Charleston Place and remained there until 1992. Our contract expired after that and the conference was again
moved.
In 1993, the Gailliard Auditorium was again available. We held the conference that year in April instead of May.
The conference returned in 1994 through 1996 to the Omni Hotel. In 1997 the conference made use of the Francis Marion
Hotel as the conference was having difficulty booking the Omni. The conference remained at this location in 1998.
1999 SCITC returned to the Omni Hotel and stayed until 2011.
All conferences were held in the later part of May except in 1993 it was held in the month of April.
In earlier years the conference started Wednesday and ended Friday. The change was made to host the conference
Monday to Wednesday because many participants would leave early Friday for home and forgo the last day’s evening
function.
Working with the Omni Hotel was again difficult in terms of scheduling dates during peak season and holidays. Due to
these constraints it was decided to relocate once again to Wild Dunes.
In the earlier years of the conference, many local banks would donate money for lunches and dinners at the conference.
Lunches were often deemed the Governor’s Lunch as SC Governors frequently patronized the conference and
participated as honored guest speakers. It was shortly after Governor Jim Edwards’ time in office that this luncheon
became known as the World Trade Luncheon. Governor Jim Edwards was unique in that he never failed to speak to the
conference during his four-year term in office.
The SCITC had a number of great speakers in addition to governors. 1992 Les McGraw, CEO of Flu Corporation
International, spoke. In 1993, the speaker was Carlos Ghosn, Chairman, President and CEO of Michelin. In 1994, Dr.
Helmut Panke, President of BMW, presented. Darla Moore, President of Rainwater, Inc., spoke in 2001. And in 2002,
our late board member, Harry Wamboldt, Vice President of Operations of Mikasa, addressed our group.
SCITC had many other functions and activities located at the following places: Drayton Hall, Charles Towne Landing,
Alhambra Hall, Yorktown, Wild Dunes, Citadel Beach House, SCE&G Sullivan’s Island Facility, and Harbor Tours.
The conference provided two scholarships namely: Margaret Patrick International Trade Scholarship and W. Don Welch
International Trade Scholarship.
As a board member, Margaret Patrick organized an Advisory Board that was influential and helpful to the conference.
Also for several years she had board members contact high schools in the spring to speak to the students about
international trade and things relative.
The SCITC ranged from 300 to near a 1000 people in attendance during the forty years. Without a doubt the conference
is one of the best in the country and is always looking for ways to improve.
