Vision Statement
Our Desire is to accomplish
great and noble things for
God in accordance with the
Word and Will of God.
I continue to give thanks and praise to God for the positive changes I have observed this year within the church family.
I must admit I began to notice it last year. I can truly say I believe that the Ebenezer Church is once again on the
path to grow spiritually, and the truth is that kind of growth is perhaps more important than numerical growth.
I pray that this trend continues into the distant future because there is still more room to grow.
This is an achievement, as a church, that we can all be proud of and hopefully we will encourage each other to keep
growing. Now is a good time for the church to focus attention on increasing the membership.
That is why I have put together a “Church Growth Committee” to begin discussing ways in which Ebenezer can
reach the unsaved and un-churched outside the sacred walls of worship.
We need to compliment our spiritual growth with numerical growth. If we plant and water the
Write the Vision Lord said he would give the increase. I ask that you pray for this committee to come up with
practical ways to get the entire church involved in this effort because growing the church will
Make it Plain
require everyone’s support and participation.
Also, I have put in place a long range “Church Anniversary Committee” to propose a bold plan to raise a sizeable
amount of income to alleviate Ebenezer’s indebtedness. This committee will spearhead the upcoming 2014-2016
Church Anniversary celebration.
In addition to being responsible for fundraising, the committee will focus on
fellowship opportunities for the sole purpose of celebrating the progress being made over the 36 months of this
campaign.
Why are we doing this? We have two major debts that I believe the time has come for Ebenezer to begin a process that
significantly decreases or eliminates these debts. This bold initiative will get the church in a position to realize the
vision of relocating to the Fairfield Road site. The sooner we pay down our debt or eliminate it the sooner we can erect
the all-purpose building we have envisioned. And in spite of what some people may think, we already have the people
and the resources to accomplish this. What is needed is the willingness and perseverance to see it through, I believe
we have both.
Both of these committees provide moments for enrichment and spiritual growth that if we siege the opportunity we
can reap enormous rewards. I hope I can count on your prayers and participation as we move closer to each
undertaking.
Thank you again for all that you do to help make our church a great place to gather and growth together in the love of
Jesus Christ. May God bless you and keep smiling upon you is my prayer!!!
Anniversary Prayer
O Lord we praise your name and give thanks for your
blessings and
purpose for New Ebenezer Baptist Church over 103 years. Give each member a
desire and means to participate in the” sacrificial giving” and celebrating. And
then O Lord give us a memorable experience of the place and person similar to
what You gave the Psalmist that inspired the writing of the 84 th Psalm. On bending knees we
pray that our 104th, 105th and 106th anniversary works gain favor in your sight.
Unite us in your purpose and lead us in your will and way for New Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Grant us a testimony that we can share and all can see how our God raised up New Ebenezer to
be a blessing to the Midlands and the world. Then help us to remember and know that New
Ebenezer can do all things in Christ Jesus.
Oh Lord
be in the midst of our Anniversary Giving and celebrating over the next three years
that our relationships, hope, trust and joy is complete in Christ Jesus! Amen.

There is an amazing man in my life that has a good
page 2
balance on God's ordinance that you put God 1st,
Family 2nd, Work 3rd.
Curt realizes that his
relationship with God has sustained him. His most precious role is that of
Husband,
Father, and Grand father. This man is a great husband (I will send him a bill for this one
lol) and an excellent father. I am proud to say that he is my husband, my best friend, my
high school sweetheart. He loves having the ability to take care of others whether his
immediate family or his extended family or friends.
He has learned to balance family time among his wife Wilma, 3 children,
Crystal,
Curtrell, & Curtis Jr. He has to work a little harder now that he has 6 grands Taylor,
(twins) Logan & Kennedy, Lincoln. Ndamukonk, and Sydney. His greatest challenge is
trying to balance these priorities. The telephone has become our life line. He is a very
generous, thoughtful, loving, humble and kind man. We have a real family affair going
on, Curtis was born on October 20, 1951, my birthday is October 20th, our wedding
anniversary is on October 20th and two of our children (twins) were born on October
20th! That is what I call a great day!
(Part 1 of article by Wilma Frye).
Curtis Frye is a self described country boy, born in Vass, North Carolina, one of four children of Louise and William Frye. Louise,
is how he speaks of his Mother, endearingly, with a big smile on his face, was a great influence on his philosophy which has
become the foundation of his success. He says, “ no is not and option, it is just a matter of when”. His mother’s radical way of
thinking, sense of determination, made her a risk taker, whose out spoken way of getting things done could not be deterred, She
was an activist at a time in our history when standing up for what was right was unsafe. Her actions directly led to he and his
siblings being moved from a separate but equal school, when he was in the seventh grade. They integrated Vass-Lakeview in 1965,
two years before the laws were passed to integrate schools in 1967.
We cannot cover all the interesting experiences involved in that transition, needless to say he and his family would endure many
challenges. His older brother James turned out to be a star athlete at the new school.. This made Curtis’ transition into Union
Pine High school easier. During this time in the rural South no one talked much about going to college. he expected to go into the
armed forces, which was segregated at the time, Louise had other ideas. After graduating High School, he attended Sandhills
Community College, where he became student body leader, Mother, Louise attend college too...the same college, at the same time at age 53! She was quite a remarkable woman! Curtis later graduated from East Carolina, where he wrote bills for Student Legislature. He represented the Young Black Democrats (YBD), and
assisted with Jim Hunt’s campaign for Governor, He says,” I always thought I would be a lawyer, and was always politically engaged.”
He has worn many hats on his way to becoming a nationally and internationally recognized coach. His recruiting skills would be on of his greatest assets. It takes a
special talent to see greatness in others. He is able to cultivate that raw talent into award winning athletes.
He is fondly called “ Coach” rightly so, because he has mastered the games, and teaching others how to do so. Currently he is the Head Coach for the University of
South Carolina Track and Field teams. Frye's coaching specialties are the hurdling events, sprints, and relays.
He served as an assistant coach for the United States women's track and field team at the 2004 Summer Olvmpics in Athens. Greece. Before coming to South
Carolina, Frye was an assistant coach at East Carolina Universitv , the Universitv of Florida, North Carolina State University , and the Universitv of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

special achievement award in addition to being named to Team USA's 2004 Olympic track and field coaching staff. He received the South Carolina Order

Coach Curtis Frye and his wife Wilma founded the Frye Foundation in 2011. The Frye Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the
assistance of persons and their families that deal with diabetes and mental illnesses, as well as other charitable causes. The Frye Foundation
provides support for diabetes and mental illnesses in research and development, mentoring programs, and funding for scholarships for
students that will major in programs that assist in the treatment.
He and his family can also be describe as a globetrotters. They has travelled to 45 of the United States. International travels include Japan, Germany, Spain, Monte
Carlo, Paris, Greece, Australia, Italy…. Just to name a few.
Here at New Ebenezer Baptist Church we do not have to look to the distant history to learn about great African American and their contribution, just look at the great
Americans sitting next to you, as we worship.

Trust
What is trust?
According to Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary, Trust is an assumed reliance or the character, ability,
and strength of someone or something. My definition of trust is someone who can do something without being
checked up on or being able to depend on someone. God’s meaning of trust is that, he just wants you to believe in
him and that trust (faith) is enough.
I will go in depth on trust at home, school and trust in general. Follow me on this journey as I explain why
trust is needed and how being trustworthy betters your character. Trust is needed in every relationship.
In my opinion I think it is most important at home. Home is where the heart is. My heart is my family.
Without trust in your own house, you’re like an outsider in a stranger’s house. I say that because when you’re not
trusted in your own house you’re going to constantly be watched and checked up on. That will make you and the
people you live with feel very uncomfortable. Parents shouldn’t have be suspicious every time you’re on the computer or when you are not with them. They should be able to trust that you will do what you say, and what is expected.
The Bible illustrates that trust is a huge issue, and gives many examples of consequences of being untrustworthy. For example, the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden when they betrayed God by eating
from the “Tree of Knowledge”. God trusted them to obey his rules. When they betrayed God’s trust they brought
suffering and hardship on themselves and all mankind
It is important to have the trust of your parents. When your parents trust you, it’s one of the best feelings
in the world. When you are trustworthy you gain a greater freedom, to move about, make decisions. Once you
have conquered trustworthiness at home it will be easy to apply those principles at school and everywhere. People
see you as being dependable. Trustworthy means being obedient.
If you can trust God with your life and trust him to help you make good decisions then you’ll be able to get
through anything whether it be big or small.
When you are trustworthy you gain a greater freedom to move about and make decisions." As a child its
important to know how to get your blessings.

I had heard about this great guy through some rumors going around. I heard someone searched
all over, “Nobody Greater” could be found. He had more friends than Facebook; even Twitter’s followers were not
as vast. I figured my chances were slim to none because of things I did in the past. When a mutual friend
introduced us, told me Jehovah was his name. I felt guilt over my past sins and looked away with shame.
He said He already knew me and He asked me for a date, I felt so unworthy, so I made him wait. After two years of
waiting, I couldn’t let a good thing pass me by,. So I agreed to one date, and with joy I began to cry. With butterflies
in my stomach, I wondered how to prepare. Then I remembered that he told me “don’t fret about what to wear”.
Then I thought about my life, the bad things I had done thus far, the fact I still have some issues, but he said “come
as you are”.
We agreed to take it slowly. the first date we’d go for a dip, and every first Sunday after that, we’d meet for juice and
a chip. And when I yearn for his attention and I’m about to lose my grip, we’d meet on Wednesday evenings for
some fellowship. So let me tell you about my man. I’m not jealous. I will share Him gladly.
If you asked me how much I’m in love in with Him, I’d have to tell you ...madly. Sometimes I call Him Jehovah
Jireh because He provides all my needs. Then there’s Jehovah Rapha because He cures me from disease. He’s
even Jehovah Shalom because He’s my King of peace, But He is always Jehovah Nissi because He’s my victory.
So when I think of the goodness of my man and all He has done for me, my soul cries out HALLELUJAH!!!!
thank God for choosing me!

"Watch Night Service"
Quarterly
page 4
There is a reason for the importance of New Year's
Eve services in African American congregations. The
Watch Night Services in Black communities that we
celebrate today can be traced back to gatherings
across the South on December 31, 1862, known at
that time as, "Freedom's Eve." On that night,
Blacks came together in churches and private
homes all across the nation, anxiously awaiting
news that the Emancipation Proclamation had
actually become law.
Then, at the stroke of midnight, it became January 1,
1863, and all slaves in the Confederate States were
declared
legally free. When the news was received , there were prayers , shouts and songs of joy
throughout the South as people fell to their knees and
thanked God.
Their Legacy/Our Heritage
Author, Stephen R Covey wrote in his book, ‘First Things
First” that humans have four basic needs. The need to live,
love, learn and to leave a legacy.
He defined “the need to leave a legacy as our spiritual need
to have a sense of meaning, purpose, personal congruence,
and contribution”.
America was built on ingenuity of our forefathers.
Black American inventors created devices and machines of
all types. Their inventions revolutionized agriculture, medicine, cosmetics, mechanics and countless other fields, playing important roles in all aspects of American culture.
Here is a short list:
Alexander Mils, a black man, invented the Elevator.
Richard Spikes invented the Automatic Gearshift.
Joseph Gambol invented the Super Charge System for
Internal Combustion Engines.
Garrett A. Morgan invented the Traffic Signals.
Albert R. Robinson invented the Electric Trolley.
Charles Brooks invented the Street Sweeper .
John Burr the Lawn Mower.
Frederick Jones invented the Air Conditioner.
Alice Parker invented the Heating Furnace.
Lewis Lattimer invented the Electric Lamp.
Michael Harvey invented the Lantern .
Granville T. Woods invented the Automatic Cut off
Switch.
Thomas W. Steward invented the Mop.
Lloyd P. Ray the Dust Pan.
Jan E. Matzelinger invented the Shoe Lasting
Machine.
Walter Sammons invented the Comb.
Sarah Boone invented the Ironing Board.
George T. Samon invented the Clothes Dryer.
John Standard invented the Refrigerator.
John Love invented the Pencil Sharpener.
There are many types of legacies.
What is your legacy going to be?
William Purveys invented the Hand Stamp.
To be continued…
Philip Downing invented the Letter Drop.
G. Turman-Henderson
Joseph Smith invented the Lawn Sprinkler.
Bridging Generations
By nature , we are all interdependent. Take a look at the kind of relationships
we form, at home , work, church, and socially . They involve other people . Our
motives for what we do involves others.
Volume 1, Issue 3
Quarterly
page 5
"To love is interdependent. Love is not love at all, until you give it away!" It involves
relationships with others, belonging, and it is based on reciprocity or the Golden Rule. (Stephen Covey)
"We are better off together than when we are alone." (synergy) By God's design, no one individual has all
the talents, ideas, or the ability to perform the functions of the whole. Vital to our quality of life is our
ability to work together , learn from each other, and help each other grow , specially at Church . That is
what "Bridging Generations" is all about. It is a Generational Mentoring initiative, for the
members of New Ebenezer Baptist Church members.
We must find a way to discover our commonalities , and embrace our differences. "Our greatest joy, and
greatest pain comes in our relationship with others". Embrace the joy and conquer the pain. Do your
part to "Create a Love Culture". There are so many ways we can enrich the lives of others.
Much of this article was quoted or paraphrased from, First Things First, a book written by Stephen Covey .
His concepts paraphrase , the Word of God.
(Our need for others, read Genesis , why God created man). 1 John (God’s command that we love each
other).

The Women of Praise Dance
Ministry
Birthed nearly 10 years ago as an enhancement
activity for the 2004 Women’s Day Service. The
ministry has been going strong under the leadership
of servant leader Sister Mable Scott.
Our purpose is to glorify God through dance
expression.
In 2010, to celebrate our anniversary, the Women of Praise started an annual dance concert dinner. All proceeds are donated to the
scholarship ministry for the youth of New Ebenezer Baptist Church. We take pride in helping to defray the cost of educating a child.
The ministry started with 12 members and most of the ladies are still with the ministry. Today we are 12 strong with several inactive
members. We meet every Monday night at 6:00 -7:30 in the fellowship hall of the church. Membership is open to any adult who
would like to send praises to God through dance. Our next concert will be in March 2014. Look for the upcoming announcement.
