Welcome to the 2014 Hocktoberfest!
We hope you have a terrific time while you’re visiting Hocking College campus for the 2014
Hocktoberfest, sponsored by Rocky Brands. Set in the foothills of Southeastern, Ohio, on
Hocking College’s scenic campus, Hocktoberfest offers outdoor exhibitions, national and
local musical acts, kids activities, food and a beer garden. Hocktoberfest is the new fall
destination festival. Visit historic Robbins Crossing, and don’t forget to participate in the
fishing derby, check out the race cars and archery demos and feel free to drop by for some
live glassblowing throughout the time you’re here.

The Summoners

The Summoners, a local Athens-area rock
quartet, features Liz Pahl, Corbin Bradley
Marsh, Matt Box and Bryan Gibson. All
four of the band-mates bring something
different to the group. “For lack of a better
term, I’d call it ‘American rock music,’”

Chris Good is an Ann Arbor, Michigan
based singer-songwriter who draws
inspiration from soul, folk and West

engaging lyrics. He is often joined by The
Sweet Insurrection, a rotating cast of some
of the Midwest’s finest musicians.
Red-blooded Old-Time Americana for a
New Generation, Horseshoes & Hand
Grenades is a progressive high-energy
old-time folk grass band from Stevens
Point, Wisconsin. H&HG infuse the
roots of old-time string music with the
spontaneity and cocksure verve of youth
that is sturdy as Central Wisconsin granite.

Austin based soulful-songbird Taylor
Baker is self-taught at the banjo and
guitar, and recently won the Durango
Sole Performer Contest through
American Songwriter Magazine. Taylor is
accompanied by the multi-talented guitar
and trumpet player, Drew Walker. Together
they create a sound that is both acoustic
folk and sultry soul.

Bombadil is a North Carolina based band
whose music is a quirky, sophisticated
twist on vintage pop, indie rock and alt/
country, and are managed by the same
team who manage the Avett Brothers.
8:30 – 10 p.m.
Shook Twins are an Indie folk-pop band
hailing from Portland, Oregon. Identical
twins, Katelyn and Laurie Shook, Kyle
Volkman and Niko Daoussis form the
core quartet. Central elements of the
Shook Twins’ sound are a wide range of
instrumentation, creating a unique and
eccentric blend of folk, roots, groove and
soul.

Enjoy local artists showing off their talent
in acoustic fashion. Relish the sounds
of string picking. Find the bliss in down
home music at its finest. These intimate
performances will be heightened by the
settings within Robbins Crossing.
Archery Training and
Practice Davey Tree Climbing
Activity Hocking College Fire &
EMS The Davey Tree Expert Company will
be on hand offering tree climbing
demonstrations and allowing participants
a chance to test their own climbing
abilities. Davey employees and Hocking
College alums Joe Shaw and Adam
Maille will go over the basics of climbing
techniques and offer information about
Davey’s 100+ year history in the forest
industry.
Students and faculty from the Hocking
College School of Public Safety Services
offer information and displays. October is
fire prevention month — talks will focus
on fire prevention and fire safety. Kids will
enjoy a chance to climb into our fleet of
safety vehicles and try on firefighter gear.

How good is your aim? Test your skills at
the archery range during Hocktoberfest.
Hocking College Student Center staff will
be on hand to teach you the basics of
aiming and shooting a bow and arrow.
This fun activity is great for all ages.

At 4 p.m., the Nelsonville and Athens
National Archery in the Schools programs
will participate in an exhibition shoot
between the two award winning teams.
Columbus Zoo Wildlife
Presentation
Multi-purpose Tent; 2 – 3 p.m.
The Columbus Zoo will give you the
opportunity to learn about the animals that
travel with Jack Hanna. Discover where
they’re from, what they eat, and possibly
touch the birds, reptiles and a variety of
mammals.
COSI Science Kiosks
Kid Zone; 12 – 6 p.m.
Visit COSI’s Science Spot traveling science
exhibition for the opportunity to play,
explore and learn about science! Science
Spot consists of colorful hands-on kiosks
that challenge your mind and teach you
about science.
Fishing Derby Pond Next to Stage; 12 – 2:40 p.m.
Children and adults are encouraged to
test their angling skills at our pond that
is stocked by the Hocking College Fish
Hatchery. Try to catch the biggest fish in
your age bracket for fun prizes. Winners
will be announced at 2:45 p.m. Poles and
bait are provided.
Glassblowing Demos Visual Arts Center; North Campus;
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Students and faculty from the Hocking
College Art, Design & Marketing program
display their skills at creating beautiful
blown glass art. See our newly remodeled
Visual Arts Studio.
Historic Crafts and Skills

Robbins Crossing; 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The pioneer days of southeastern Ohio are
reignited with a visit to Robbins Crossing, a
completely restored 1850s-era village.Tour
the town’s old buildings and blacksmith
shops as well as watch demos on candle
making, corn husk doll making, cider pressing, yarn spinning, rug making and cooking
on a wood-burning stove and open fire.

Come and get up close and personal with
some amazing snakes, raptors and other
critters that reside at the Hocking Woods
Nature Center.

Shuttles will run at 3:00, 7:00 and
11:00 p.m. and leave from the
Nelsonville Depot. $4 per person.
Check out the Fall Foliage trains,
Thursdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. and
Saturdays and Sundays at 12 p.m. and
2:30 p.m. through October 26. Ride with
them today as they shuttle people back
and forth from their depot in Nelsonville,
next to the Rocky Outlet Store, to
Hocktoberfest. Return for the fireworks
display at 10:00 p.m.!

Mechanical Bull Rides
Photo Phun Booth
Can you stay on for eight seconds? Test
your bull riding skills at the mechanical
bull ride! This unique activity is designed
with multiple safety features including
an inflatable safety area, state-of-theart computer controls, padded foam
horns, and real hide to make it safe for
the young and the young-at-heart. Don’t
miss the bull riding demo by Professional
Roughstock Series Rider Shane Rickly at
1:30 pm!
Commemorate your Hocktoberfest
experience with photos from the Photo
Phun Booth. We’ll provide the seasonal
props and background image, you provide
the smile! Each photo strip includes the
Hocktoberfest logo and year above several
shots of you and your friends. Specially
designed frames are also available for an
additional charge.

Hocking College team driving students
and faculty offer short wagon rides and
campus tours. Participants can simply
ride the wagon and enjoy the scenic
Hocking College campus. Or, get off for
a short time at the Visual Arts Studio and
enjoy glassblowing demonstrations and
walk a short distance to the Hocking
College Equine facility for barn tours.
Shuttles leave stops every 30 minutes.

Visit the indoor and outdoor Kid Zones for
fun and educational activities. The outdoor
area features face painting, pumpkin
decorating, COSI Science Kiosks and

Enjoy an educational walk around the
beautiful Hocking College campus.
School of Natural Resources faculty and
students will lead guided Nature Walks
along the college’s trails and point out the
natural plants and animals that inhabit the
area. Walks will focus on topics such as
bugs, birds, edible plants, and even a trip
to the Star Lab Planetarium. These walks
are appropriate for children and adults.

Hocking College Chef Doug Weber will
showcase his pumpkin carving abilities
and provide tips and tricks for improving

Division of Parks & Recreation and
Division of Watercraft will team up to
offer information about Ohio’s State
Parks and waterways. Ohio is home to
74 State Parks and an endless variety of
lakes, ponds, streams and rivers. Stop
by the ODNR booth to learn more about
Ohio’s abundance of exceptional outdoor
recreational experiences available near you.

Wayne National Forest covers more than
a quarter million acres of Appalachian
foothills. The forest offers more than
300 miles of trails for hiking, ATV riding,
horseback riding and biking. Stop by their
booth to learn what you can do to prevent
forest fires. Smokey Bear may even be on
hand to help spread the message about
fire prevention and safety.

Step out of the bright light into the perfect
conditions of a dark, cloudless night sky to
see a realistic model of the stars in all their
glory. You can get an up-close look and
learn all about some of the most distant
objects and spectacular constellations that
can be seen from Earth.
