Major Checkpoints
Please refer to the Rules and Regulations of the Kokoda Challenge, particularly to accessing your team along the course. . You can only have access to your team at Major CP’s. It is imperative for the safety of the competitors and officials that Support Crew vehicle access is restricted to Major Checkpoints only. There is a compulsory Support Crew briefing for full course and Stan Bisset Cup which will be held at the start line 7.30am on 19th July 2014. Jim Stillman Cup Support Crew will need to attend their compulsory briefing at Numinbah Hall at 12.30pm on this day. You will be addressed by the Police and Kokoda Challenge officials. Important information will be provided on health and safety. You will be provided with your vehicle pass at this time. Without this vehicle pass you will not be admitted to the checkpoints (and remember, if you service your team outside the checkpoints, your team will be disqualified unless permission has been given by Event organisers for emergency reasons or extractions.) Only one Support Crew Vehicle of standard size is permitted per team (NO Trailers allowed or campervans). Support Crew vehicles are to park in the designated parking area as directed by the Kokoda Volunteers. Please keep your driving speed down to the bare minimum in parking areas. Parking will only be permitted with the correct parking pass displayed clearly in the vehicle windscreen. Any Support Crew vehicle without a pass WILL NOT be allowed entry to the Major Checkpoint, there are no exceptions. Support Crews are discouraged to arrive at Major Checkpoints more than 2 hours before their team is due to arrive due to the limited parking available. Support Crews MUST provide all toilet paper at Major Checkpoints as none will be provided by the event organizers. The Kokoda Challenge is an environmentally friendly event and we ask that all Support Crews and Teams tread lightly. Support Crews MUST remove and dispose of all theirs and their teams’ rubbish. There will be no rubbish bins provided along the event route. Please take care at all times. Remember there are some very tired and exhausted people wandering about. Strap your teams feet and sensitive areas BEFORE signs of blisters occur. In past years Kokoda Challenge the initial problems were nearly all blister or chaffing related areas. TOP TIP: Learn the route yourself and when mobile phone access is available keep in contact with your team and learn to predict their pace and estimated time of arrival at Major Checkpoints. Telstra Next G has the best mobile coverage and also provides access to the internet to monitor your team via virtual spectator. Like our Facebook page to learn details of any fire, accident or emergencies that will affect teams. 1 FIRTH PARK Plenty of parking is available at the start site with parking entry being off Somerset Drive, please follow instructions from our Parking Volunteers. After the race starts support crew teams for the full course and the Stan Bisset Cup are required to attend a compulsory briefing at 7.30am at the start line. Support crew teams for the Jim Stillman Cup participants will need to attend their compulsory briefing at 12.30pm in Numinbah Hall. This is really important as teams will not be allowed in to the first Major CP until 10AM. Due to the amount of teams, please ensure you are only going to this CP when you are expecting your team. This year there will also be a drop off bay which will be setup on Somerset Drive, this is strictly a drop off bay and then vehicles must leave the area and either park in the designated area of just drop off and leave. Race Registration Hall Start Line Parking Access Team/Supporters Parking 2 Entry Point Exit Point Start Line 3 EAST OF POLLY’S CREEKSIDE CAFE IMPORTANT NOTES: Support Crews are encouraged to visit and support local visitor attractions prior to arriving at Checkpoint 4. There is limited parking and we need to minimise the time spent at each Major Checkpoint to no more than 2-3 hours per vehicle. Suggested local attractions: Gold Coast War Museum, 42 John Rogers Road, off Springbrook Road, Mudgeeraba. Open 7 Days from 9am to 4pm. Phone: (07) 5530 5222. CHECKPOINT 4 is situated East of Polly’s Creekside Cafe which is a commercial restaurant/café at 1024 Gold Coast-Springbrook Rd. Referdex Pollys R-46-M20. There is absolutely no parking on roadway along Mudgeeraba/Springbrook Rd. The area has limited parking facilities and will be supervised by the rural parking brigade. A gold coin donation would be appreciated to support their great work. Please follow the directions of the Kokoda Parking Volunteers as parking is at a premium and we will be able to fit more vehicles at the Checkpoint if directions are followed accordingly. As the competitors have been out on the course for 35 kms they certainly need some support at this stage and the slower teams will be coming in at nightfall. The Kokoda Challenge is held in winter and temperatures will also start to fall towards the end of the day. Support Crew Tip: This is where your teams will start to really need their support crew both mentally and physically. Check them for signs of dehydration, blisters and low morale doing what you can to perk them up for the steep incline around the corner. Food & Drinks Hot food and drinks will be available for purchase at Polly’s Creekside Café. 4 Extreme Wet Weather Plan Checkpoint 4 In the event of extreme wet weather in the lead up to the Challenge the parking area at CP4 becomes water logged and therefore we are unable to use this as a support crew parking area. There are no other suitable grounds in this area that can park the amount of cars required and as it is a requirement placed on us by authorities that all cars must be off public roads we have no choice but to remove crew support from CP4. Crew support for competitors will be replaced with a box system as commonly used in Adventure Racing. Each Team will need to provide 2 x 50 litre plastic boxes with sealable lids clearly marked with your team number and name. In these two boxes you need to place all gear, food and powdered electrolytes that your team may need at this section of the race, remembering that for a lot of teams it will be dark before they meet up with you again at Numinbah Hall CP6. Water will be provided by event officials at CP4 so please do not put water in your race boxes. The maximum weight per box is not to exceed 20kg. Your two boxes need to be dropped off to the trucks in the car park at the event start line at Firth Park between 5.30am and 7am and after CP4 closes Saturday evening all the boxes will be transported to the finish line for collection by a team member or support crew. No support crew are to try and access their team at CP4 in this situation unless express permission has been given by event officials and only for emergency reasons or to collect withdrawing team members. Any team breaching these rules will be disqualified. For further information please see the document Extreme Wet Weather Plan in the Competitors Log-in Area. 5 Pollys Kitchen – Old Checkpoint CP Support Crew Access 6 (Half way mark) NUMINBAH VILLAGE HALL START POINT JIM STILLMAN CUP IMPORTANT NOTES: Support Crews are encouraged to visit and support local visitor attractions prior to arriving at Checkpoint 6.
