Operation Shore
Patrol
Pick Up a Mountain
September 20 – 21, 2008
Hello All Region Not sure if you’ve been informed or heard about a Region 4 event called Pick Up a Mountain or not, but
we are hosting this clean-up that has been reinstated for the first time since 1975!
Operation
Shore
Patrol
– Washington beach cleanup
in September will mark our
thirty-seventh annual event.
Will you please let your region members know about it? I failed to meet the Tr-Power deadline.
It will be in the Naches Ranger District with camping at Long Meadow which is free and basically primitive besides a
toilet house.
Headquarters for sign up
and information are located
at three State Parks; park
locations, beach areas and
OSP Chairmen are as follows:
Region 1 – Ocean City
State Park (North Beach
area). Chairman – Angela
Holm (253) 529-9482 or

<
[email protected]
I realize that it is also the SAME weekend as OSP but that was originally the purpose for ‘us’ dryside’rs since we do not
have an ocean to clean-up as R1, 2, 3!
I have had some inquiries from those not in R4 - everyone is welcome!
If this is a ‘hit’, possibly we can change the date next year to help those out that wish to attend OSP and Pick-up A
Mountain!
I also realize that this may be a distance for you to come - but think about the trails you may be able to run that you
wouldn’t otherwise get to?! not to mention the trash being picked up and the hours being logged!
Need more info - feel free to contact me - but will be away on 8/16-21.
Thanks to all!

The BLM manages more land
258 million surface acres than
any other Federal agency.
Most of this public land is
located in 12 Western States,
including Alaska. The Bureau,
with a budget of about $1.8
billion, also administers 700
million acres of sub-surface
mineral estate throughout the
nation. The BLM’s multipleuse mission is to sustain the
health and productivity of
the public lands for the use
and enjoyment of present

Bureau accomplishes this by
managing such activities as
outdoor recreation, livestock
grazing, mineral development,
and energy production, and by

Public Invited to Participate
in Collaboration Workshops
about WildernessThe Colville
National Forest (Forest) will
be hosting a series of public
workshops this fall to help the
agency evaluate Inventoried
Roadless
Areas
(IRAs)
within the Forest for their
potential
recommendation
as wilderness. Evaluation of
IRAs for potential wilderness
recommendation is a required
step in the forest plan revision
process. “It has been just over
a year since a citizens group
participated in an intensive
public collaboration effort
related to specific elements
of the Colville Forest Plan
Revision,” said Rick Brazell,
Colville Forest Supervisor.
“Now that we are further along
in the wilderness evaluation
process, I’m looking forward
to having more detailed public
discussion. This will help
further inform my decision
on whether to recommend
additional wilderness or not
in the revised forest plan.”
said Brazell. A “kick-off” public
workshop will be held in
Colville September 6, followed
by a general information
meeting in Spokane midmonth.
Three
Saturday
community workshops are
planned between September
and November; one workshop
in each county. A final meeting
will be held in Colville to wrap
up the process and integrate
recommendations from the
various
workshops.
“The
collaborative workshops will
be open to all members of
the public, not just to those
individuals who participated
in the previous effort. To
honor past collaborative public
discussions on wilderness,
we’ll
be
incorporating
information gained from the
2007 Collaborative Round-Up
in this process” said Margaret
Hartzell, Forest Plan Revision
Team
Leader.
-MOREForest Service Collaboration
Workshops/ Page 2---- “Each
community workshop will
evaluate a specific set of
IRAs within each geographic
area. We encourage people
within and outside of these
communities to participate in
this collaborative process,”
Hartzell said. For additional

meeting notes and public
recommendations from the
2007 round of collaboration
workshops and a list of

WYOMING
COURT
STRIKES
ROADLESS
RULE, BLASTS
FOREST
SERVICE
CHEYENNE, WY
(August 13) - The Clinton-Gore
2001 Roadless Rule suffered
another death in its phoenixlike existence as U.S. District
of Wyoming Judge Clarence
Brimmer yesterday issued a
102 page decision declaring
the Rule illegal and enjoining
its implementation throughout
the U.S. Forest Service
System. The decision came in
a case brought by the State
of Wyoming in 2007, which
paralleled an earlier complaint
filed by Wyoming in 2001.
Judge Brimmer found the Rule
illegal in the first case, but the
2001 case was found to be
moot and his ruling vacated
on appeal, and the 2001 Rule
was reinstated in 2006 by a
judge in the Northern District of
California. Brimmer’s decision
minces few words, concluding
the 2001 Rule “was driven by
political haste and evidenced
pro forma compliance with”
environmental laws, using
descriptors such as “flagrant”
and “cavalier” in characterizing
the “unequivocal” violations.
“We are obviously pleased by
this decision and feel that it
vindicates our position laid out
over a decade ago opposing
a top-down ‘one size fits all’
roadless policy,” said Greg
Mumm, Executive Director of
the BlueRibbon Coalition, a
national advocacy organization
for trails-based recreation
that has participated in the
various Roadless cases. Other
recreational groups joining
BlueRibbon in the Wyoming,
California and other cases
were the California Association
of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs, United
Four Wheel Drive Associations,
and the American Council of
Snowmobile Associations.
“It is particularly timely that we
now place the 2001 Roadless
Rule as an example of a bad
idea that we should lay to rest,”
observed Paul Turcke, an
attorney for the Recreational
Groups. “All Forest visitors
respect and value these areas,
but they are properly managed
by local officials with local
input, not through a legacybuilding campaign launched
and maneuvered inside the DC
beltway,” Turcke concluded.
The “roadless” areas will now
be protected and managed
under existing Forest Plans,
or through the state-generated
petitions in some states,
including Idaho and Colorado,
September 2008
that are being considered,
submitted for public input,
and will ultimately be adopted
by the Forest Service. It is
unclear how the recent ruling
will affect the numerous
Forest Service actions taken
since 2006 which applied the
2001 Roadless Rule.

Help DNR chart
a course for
recreation in
Washington
The Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) will be
looking to user groups and
individuals to help create a
new vision for recreation on
DNR-managed
forestlands,
aquatic lands and natural
areas. Throughout the month
of September, DNR will host
nine workshops across the
state to gather input from
interested citizens.
We invite you to come share
your thoughts on the direction
of recreation in Washington.
Where do you recreate? What
kinds of recreation activities
do you enjoy? How easily
can you access recreation on
state-managed lands? Drop
by various topic stations at one
of the workshops, talk to staff
and provide your thoughts on
these and other questions.
DNR will bring your answers to
these and other questions to
the newly formed Sustainable
Recreation Work Group. This
group was established by the
2008 Legislature to assist
DNR in developing a longterm vision that ensures safe,
sustainable, and enjoyable
outdoor recreation on DNRmanaged land.

Why this new focus on
recreation?
The last time the state officially
addressed recreation issues
on
DNR-managed
lands
was 37 years ago with the
passage of the Multiple Use
Act in 1971. This act is based
on the concept of state lands
being available for multiple
uses
where
appropriate,
including
various
types
of recreation. Since then,
the face of recreation has
changed significantly beyond
what anyone envisioned.
New forms of recreation have
come on the scene including
paragliding, mountain biking
and paintball. Motorized offroad vehicle use has more
than doubled in the state in the
last 10 years. And, the overall
volume of visitors to state
6
lands has grown dramatically.
The Multiple Use Act still
provides a solid foundation for
recreation in Washington. Your
input will help identify ways to
better take into account the
changing nature of recreation,
pressures from a growing
population, and the need to
ensure the environmental
health
of
DNR-managed
lands.

Movies,

My Backyard
What to do
in this trying
economy?
By Del Albright,
BlueRibbon Ambassador
Fuel prices are killing us.
Everything is costing more
than ever before. Event
attendance is down. Offroad businesses are going
under. Folks are withdrawing
into different (new) ways of
recreating. What does this
mean, and how do we cope
with this trying economy and
still pursue our recreational
activities?
I’d like to offer a few ideas and
suggestions to help during
these tough times. First of
all, we can’t lose sight of the
fact that we need to recreate
or we’ll go nuts. Second, we
can’t let our favorite off-road
businesses go under without
trying to help them. And third,
there are things we can do
and still consider it recreating
– maybe a bit closer to home.

Webfooters!
It all happened in “Burt
Severeid’s home” where six
men (and their lovely wives)
gathered for the sole purpose
of starting the 4th jeep club in
the state of Washington, just
behind the infamous Yakima
Ridgerunners (#1), Vancouver
4-Wheelers (#2), and the
Longview Trailbreakers (#3).
An ad was placed in the paper
inviting all interested in joining
a jeep club. This 4th jeep club
sprouted wings on September
7, 1958 by the following jeep
enthusiasts: Bruce Cole, Burt
Severeid, Norris Nelson, Doug
Daquet, Don Prine and Tom
Munt. The first meeting was
held at “Cole’s Auto Body
Shop”.
It was time to name the 4th
jeep club. Who’s got any
ideas? Burt Severeid said,
“How about the Tacoma
Webfooters Jeep Club? Oh,
the complaints poured in
about how silly that name was,
but no one else came up with
anything else, so it stuck!! The
4th jeep club in the northwest
was to be called, “The Tacoma
Webfooters” , with Bruce Cole
as the first president.
jeeping and trailing, but to
help our “jeeping families” in
time of need. Sig Mehr was
struggling with health issues
and so a “4X4 Swap” came to
be helping with Sig’s medical
bills. Later, Mike Blair was
diagnosed with cancer. We
stepped up to the plate and
created the “Keep Mike Blair
Alive”. And then, our own
Connie McCaslin struggled
with her rheumatoid arthritis/
cancer illness and so began the
“For Connie’s Sake” fundraiser
helping her family pay medical
bills. “Helping Hands”, one of
our last fund raisers, helped
Dan Morris when he injured
his hands during a relay race.
With the help of every jeep
family, every jeep club, we are
proud to say that we raised a
combined $65,000 for all of
the fundraisers. We are so
proud to be a part of our “Jeep
Family, the PNW4WDA”.
Listed below are some historic
events:
•
•
•
•
•
The above mentioned jeep
clubs set out to become a
state group formerly known
as the Pacific Northwest
Jeep Association (now known
as the Pacific Northwest 4Wheel Drive Association).
Don Armstrong
(Yakima
Ridgerunner) was the first
president with Norris Nelson
(Tacoma Webfooter) as the
vice-president.
•
It
was
interesting
how
“Playdays” came to be.
The Webfooters planned a
weekend in May at Bonnell’s
property known as “The 40
Acres” to “play in our jeeps”.
The weekend was simply a
time for our club to enjoy some
family fun. An obstacle course
was created with water and
stumps, hills and valleys, and
a really cool tire pit! We also
had pole bending (instead of
barrels) where jeeps weave
in and out of poles. As we got
ready to have one of our “play
days”, we thought it would be
fun to invite neighboring jeep
clubs to join us. Donations
at the gate, along with our
famous
“Joe’s
Pancake
House” paid for trophies. And,
how cool were our trophies
back then! The men from the
jeep club cut the wood, while
the ladies labeled the trophies
with “alphabet soup” letters
which they later used the real
fancy “label machines”!! The
jeeps that topped each trophy
were children’s jeep toys found
in the children’s toy sections in
stores.
•
As we evolved, it was
extremely important for us
to not only have family fun

order by Angie Holm at 7:30,
followed by the flag salute
and a moment of silence for
the ill and departed. There
were 11 delegates present,
representing 7 clubs.
Correspondence: Rock’d-NLock’d joined us again, looking
into moving to Region 1
so they changed their name to
Dirty 13. They joined the PNC
in 1975 and they are mostly a
trail club. They currently have
a full roster with 13 families.
They do a lot of activities
through out the year and every
year they do the Christmas
tree run, the weekend of
Thanksgiving and the first
weekend in December. Carl
from Olympic 4x4 cooks a 7
course meal, and our camp is
decorated with inflatables.
Club Power/We Did It: For
all work parties and cleanups,
make sure you submit your

There was
a work party last weekend
and they did a lot of trail

on the Indian
Deer Crossing with fish &
game and they don’t like the
crossing either, so part of the
trail will be closed. There is
an email going out to a variety
of user groups regarding the
work party on September 23rd
at 9am. Over the next few
work parties they will be filling
in large holes and fixing the
water crossings.
Walker: There was a work
party this past weekend that
worked on the new skills area.
Right now all the trails are in
pretty good shape and all the
trails were ran for the skills
area to make sure they are
passable.
There currently
are a few grants but we still
have a ways to go to complete
the grant hours, one grant
is completed in June 2009

Fisher—Karen had nothing
new to report. She is still
working on getting the
membership cards for the new
club, Total Destruction.
Secretary Linda Jessen—No
report.
Competition Kyle Wiebold—
Kyle gave a very details report
on Summer Convention. He
thanked everyone who helped
and attended. All the clubs
and individuals were also
thanked. Kyle is still waiting
for some invoices. Convention
was a lot of fun. Rick and the
membership thanked Kyle for
September 2008
all of his hard work.
Karen Fisher asked for
time and read a statement
concerning some things on
the PNW website. Crystal
Crowder asked for time to
address Karen’s concerns.
A discussion followed with
several members addressing
the problems.
Treasurer Rick Levine—Rick
gave a details report on
the Region’s finances. Jeff
Bowman made the motion,
seconded by Darryl Maunu,
that the Treasurer’s report be
accepted. Motion carried.
Public Relations Ben Weller—
Ben had his hands full with
Boden but he was able to state
that he had no report.
Oregon Land Matter Jeff
Bowman—Jeff was able to
report that trails are again
open after the closure because
of fire danger. He reported that
Dave Hiatt has been very busy
and is asking for us to look
for places to put sustainable
trails. He named off several
areas. Jeff suggested thinking
of loop possibilities. Mr. Hiatt
is looking for new 4WD trails.
A new trail adoption is being
worked on. The group is the
Wasted Wages Off Road club
and the trail is the Bushong.
Mud Puppies will be having a
work party on Labor Day on
the waterfall trail. The work will
be taking place on Saturday.
They will be moving stumps.
Washington Land Matters
Bill Manbeck—Bill stated they
got to meet the new DNR
Volunteer Coordinator at their
last meeting, who seems
willing to work with everyone.
Pick Up the Burn (PUB) will
take place September 27th.
There are no details as of yet
but they know a lot of help
will be needed. Bill reported
they had been working in the
Burn for 3 weeks. Mapping
has been worked on and
things are being checked
out. There is a really good
road system, some still listed
as Jeep trails. Existing trails
have a lot of damage and will
need a lot of work. They did
work on reconstructing one.
User groups are forming for
the Gifford Pinchot and would
like our support. Bill asked for
someone to step up to help
out.
IAD Don and Carol Jensen—
Don gave a report on several
subjects
including
the
overturned lockup in Wyoming
and areas being opened in
Utah. All this information is
sent to the State Executive

revamping of the PNW SOPs
so that they can be put online.
The by-laws are also being
updated.
Carol
asked
PNW4WDA
Parliamentarian Tom Fisher
is there were any by-law
changes due to be voted on
at the September Delegates

been none submitted.
COMMITTEES
Future 4 Wheelers Josh

who is laid up with an injury.
Ways and Means Kristin
Smith—Kristin
was
also
absent due to a fall. She had

cleanup. Garbage bags have
finally arrived and Linda will
pick them up the 28th. There
is also going to be a photo
op with the Governor, it is
scheduled in September. Jeff
Bowman made the motion,
seconded by Don Jensen, that
Linda orders 50 dash plaques
for Operation Shore Patrol.
Motion carried. If you need
a special t-shirt order, the
deadline is the 27th.
Don Jensen spoke about the
inability of Linda being able
to get to the beach as often
this year due to her business,
the
depressed
economy,
and higher gas prices. This
is affecting door prizes
drastically. Don Jensen made
the motion, seconded by Earl
Friemuth, that Linda Jessen
be allowed to use $200 of the
Region funds for some special
drawings at Operation Shore
Patrol. The drawing would be
for Region members present
at the beach cleanup. Motion
carried.
Region 3 Picnic Karen Fisher
and Carol Jensen—Karen
Fisher made the motion,
seconded by Jeff Bowman,
that $200 be earmarked for
the Region 3 picnic. Motion
carried. The picnic will take
place September 20th at Cape
Disappointment State Park.
Longview OHV Show Linda
Jessen—Linda thanked all
the members who attended
the show on July 26th. Only
35 rigs showed but a lot of fun
was had. There were several
complaints so the future of the
show is shaky. Karen Fisher
and the membership thanked
Linda for her hard work.
Tillamook Work Parties—Flat
Broke & 4 Wheelin’—At this
time there will be a Archers
trail cleanup on September
13th.
Trask Work Parties—Trask

the Committee Reports. He
reminded the membership of
the September 27th Pick Up
the Burn. There is a lot of work
to do.
Marty Tilford asked Rick
Levine for an update of
trail signage that had been
sponsored by the Region
and individual clubs. Rick
stated that only a couple have
disappeared and one has had
its stickers removed. There
are no future plans for more
signs. The Trask signs are
also still there.
NEW BUSINESS
Rick Smith stated that he
has been talking to Region
2 Director Edward Campbell.
The Association website is
being revamped that they
are suggesting that there be
more than one moderator.
They would like a moderator
from each Region and also
moderators for each area
(such as Sand Lake, Oregon
Dunes, Tillamook area, Yacolt
Burn, etc.) A long discussion
followed including the number
of moderators needed, and the
number of sites needing to be
covered. Marty Tilford made
the nomination, seconded
by Bill Manbeck, that Crystal
Crowder be appointed as
Region 3 Moderator. Another
discussion was begun. Paula
Freimuth made the motion,
seconded by Carl Leisegang,
that Crystal Crowder be
appointed as Region 3
Moderator. Motion carried.
Crystal thanked the Region
for more work. If you have
any information to pass on to
the membership, please post
it. Rick will contact Edward
Campbell with the Region’s
decision. Crystal said she
would also contact Edward.
Marry Tilford made the motion,
seconded by Crystal Crowder,
that the profits from this
years Summer Convention
be shared with the Region
on a 50/50 split. 50% of the
profit would go to the Region
and 50% be divided among
the hosting clubs: Obstacle,
cross-country, drags, kids
course, barrels, and gate. A
lengthy discussion followed.
A lot of good questions and
points were brought up by the
membership The membership
was reminded that there is a
difference when a Region puts
on the convention or when the
Associations puts it on. The
members were also reminded
that the drag lights are PNW
property and should be taken
care of by the Association.
The motion carried. Those
clubs that worked on the
Convention need to get their
information to Rick Levine.
Crystal Crowder made the
motion that the profit plan just
voted on be made retroactive
to
last
year’s
summer
convention.
Marty
Tilford
seconded the motion. Another
lengthy discussion ensued.
Motion failed.
Nominations
for
Region

nominated Darel Crowder,
seconded by Marty Tilford.
4-Wheelin’ News

Marty Tilford, seconded by
Crystal Crowder. Karen Fisher
nominated Kyle Wiebold but
Kyle had stated he would

Rick Levine asked that
something needed to be
received
concerning
last
years donation to the White
Knuckles. Jeff Bowman said
he would take care of it.
Jeff Bowman has entry forms
for the Flat Broke & 4 Wheelin’

Moses Lake, WA
Region Director, Earl Nettnin
called the meeting to order
at 7:40 PM. The Pledge of
Allegiance was recited and a
moment of silence for the sick
and departed was observed.
No guests were present.
MINUTES: Dave McMains
made a motion, seconded
by Al Matson that we accept
the June minutes as printed.
Motion passed. The Region
did not have a meeting in July.
TREASURER’S REPORT was
given by Treasurer, Sande
Nettnin. Sande said we will

receive the bill for T-Shirts for
our Comp team.

for further information. We
had received a question from
Nitty Gritty about what was
happening at Horn Rapids, so
Earl contacted Stan Johnson
and he indicated that nothing
has changed.
MEMBERSHIP: nothing new.
CLUB POWER/WE DID IT:
Our chairman Gary Harting,
reported that he is getting
a handle on recording the
information. If you need forms
get a hold of Gary.
FUTURE
4-WHEELERS:
Nothing new to report.
WEB SITE: Region 4’s web
site looks good, Rick White
says he would like to have
more people sign up and post
club’s activities and pictures.
Rick will be monitoring the
Region 4 section on the
PNW’s web site and when he
can’t, Dave Walters will help.
The PNW web site seems to
have lots of growing pains.
PR: Kelda is doing a great job
of getting information out.
LAND MATTERS:
Doug Conner reported there
is still NO LEGAL access
to Juniper Dunes. The fire
closure is still in affect with
only the BLM roads and open
use area open for motorized
recreation. Doug said that
he and Ron Rutherford have
been asked by Arlene Brooks
our WA ST Director to keep
an eye on happenings in
the Rimrock area and with
the new Rock Crawl. Doug
contacted Barry Collins about
the Rock Crawl and Barry
said the grant was extended
one year.
The plan is to
get it finished by January or
February. The DOT is going to
haul about 1000 yards of rock
into the pit and the National
Guard is going to spend two
weeks camped there doing
some annual training and one
of the projects is to build the
rock crawl. They will have
the equipment available for
placing the rocks.
Dave
McMains
reported
on the Moses Lake Sand
Dunes. Dave reported that
the Martians had landed in the
dunes, NASA was doing some
testing on their Mars Rover
during the month of June and
several people including a coworker of Dave’s had gone out
to see, touch and talk to them.
Apparently a farmer watched
them get the Rover stuck in
the sand and he offered them
some advice about the tires
they were using that resulted
in a trip to town for new tires
which reportedly worked just
fine. The Mud Flats are open
now and seems to be lots of
mud.
A rumor that speed limits
were going to be imposed in
the dunes was going around.
Dave finally got a hold of the
Deputy and was told speed
limits would be on the North
side of the road to the lake
between the two big hills just
to keep the people who park
out there and walking to the

beach safe.

Trail Jamboree 2008
This year’s Trail Jamboree marked its 19th anniversary! Nineteen years of some of the best 4 wheeling and outdoor fun with family and friends you will
ever find. This marked the 2nd anniversary of Art and I enjoying ALMOST everything the Jamboree has to offer.
We arrived at Jim Sprick Park Tuesday evening to observe the last minute preparations for the Jamboree. Again we were so impressed with the
organization involved in making this event happen! Kim and Merrick Graves do an amazing job of leading a legion of volunteers, vendors and
participants on a spectacular 4 wheeling adventure! Trail Jam 2008 included 409 participants, hosts and sponsors, 94 vehicles on the trails and 55
host/support vehicles and an incredible amount of coordination!
With the record snow fall this past winter, the area had a different look than our first Trail Jam adventure. The mountains were still melting the winter’s
record snowfall, the ground was damp or wet in many areas and the wildflower show was amazing. After last years hot temperatures, this year we
enjoyed perfect weather….warm, but not hot, cool, but not cold with the exception of one morning.
Wednesday we were invited to join Don and Gary Williams for a pre-run/trail inspection of the Kaner/Quartz area to check for accessibility and safety.
About 8 rigs participated and our first stop was at the lily pond to air down. As soon as we stopped, we found that the incredible winter snow had
produced an incredible mosquito hatch. They were big and they were hungry! Within seconds the biting began and the smell of DEET filled the air as
everyone sprayed and swatted in an attempt to limit the eating frenzy.
After airing down and waging war against the mosquitoes we were off. Art and I immediately observed how different we felt this year. Last year
we were struck with the “shock and awe” of every hill, boulder, mud bog and tight turn….at that time everything looked impossible and sometimes
terrifying. This year, with a little experience behind us, we thought…. “This is going to be a blast”! With those street tires that still need replacing, our
trusty Jack Russell Terrier Beau, serving as our personal tail gunner, we were all excited about the road ahead!
Not to long into the run we
encountered the first pile of
snow on the road. Eric and
Kirsten Richard, each driving
their personal Jeeps, gave us
a demonstration on how to get
Eric’s Jeep back on track after
going into the snow then sliding
into a precarious spot that was
making Eric’s eyes big!! Dick
Williams got a line on the Jeep,
but it was Kirsten’s strength and
agility that possibly saved him
from going over the bank. AH!
The power of a woman!
Not too long after that incident we came to a very steep area that required navigating some
large boulders. Everyone was traveling down slowly when suddenly over the CB came the words “Jeep Over”! Those words still ring in my ears! We
determined that the problem was behind us. Jeeps were secured where they stood and off we went to offer assistance. We found Don Williams and
his grandchildren Kendra Trummert and Austin and Cameron Carter climbing out of the passenger side of the Jeep all safe with no injuries. Don’s
trusty CJ lay on it side. Those following were able to get a cable on to Don’s Jeep and got the wheels back on the ground. The minor damage was
assessed; everyone was checked
for bumps and scrapes….and all
was fine. We were all ready to
roll, but much more aware of how
quickly things can change!
The trail proved to be ready
for the first run on Thursday;
Returning to camp found
everyone was safe, happy and
comparing welts left by those
hungry mosquitoes
Wednesday evening brought the
first drivers meeting and trail
selection. Merrick explained
that due to the winter snowfall,
some trails were not accessible, and some runs had to be modified. For the old timers that know the mountains like the back of their hand, some
disappointment, but understanding that Mother Nature is in charge! Trail selection was done and we found ourselves at the end of the line to sign up,
but did get on to the Clover Springs run that we had not done before.
Thursday morning we joined The Wandering Willy’s
with Allan Carter as our leader for the Clover Springs
run. We crossed many logging roads as we followed the
narrow tree canopied trail toward the William O. Douglas
Wilderness. Not to long before the turn that follows the
ridge, the jeep in front of us stopped. The driver got out,
lifted the hood…….the idler pulley for the serpentine belt
broke making it the end of the trail for that Jeep…at least
for a while. The driver lamented that he should have
replaced the squeaky pulley before Trail Jam! Out came
today’s technology to save the day! Standing near the
300 foot cliff cell phones and Blackberries appeared from
pockets and contact was made with the campground.
“Larry” was in Yakama securing parts for other vehicles.
After a quick call to “Larry” at the parts store, some
discussion between the clerk and several Jeepers on the
mountain, they determined the part required. A trail host
took off for camp to meet “Larry”, pick up the part and
return to the mountain. Later that day the Jeep made it
down the mountain with a new pulley installed. Got to love
those trail hosts!

While decisions were being
made on the Jeep that had
broken down, I had the
pleasure of chatting with
Hallie Roberts. Hallie is
15 and a sophomore at
Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma.
This day was her 2nd 4
wheeling run since receiving
her learners permit. Her
Dad, who owns Roberts
Motors and Off Road Center,
was very proud of Hallie’s
accomplishments confidently
driving the roads of Clover
Springs. Hallie maneuvered the Jeep like a pro. Growing up Jeeping added to her natural ability shows all the signs of an excellent driver. It was
great talking with her. She is the kind of young women that gives the older generation confidence in the future of our country…smart, thoughtful and
of course brave! She will probably be ready for the Funny Rocks next year.
We stopped for lunch and entertainment was provided by those who decided to conquer 2 huge piles of snow. And snow was flying everywhere. Tow
straps appeared to rescue
those who got stuck.
Because of the snow on
the mountain ridge, we
returned on the trail that we
came in on….some elected
to complete the day with a
little extra challenge that
Allan had planned. Another
great day at the wheel! And
dinner was waiting!
Art had more bad luck at
the trail selection Thursday
night. End of the line…
.again! We were planning to
get on to one of the Naches
Trails Runs….but when his
turn came those runs were
full. He decided to go back to our training ground…..Kaner/Quartz! And those once again visit those hungry Mosquitoes!
The run was led by Vic and Carrole Buchanan and sponsored by the Thunder Trucks. This was the morning that was COLD! Really COLD!
Temperatures were in the high 30’s and low 40’s. With runs of 20 to 40 miles to the trailheads, it proved to be very miserable for those in the open
jeeps. I am sure that next years “what to bring list” will be expanded to include hats,
jackets, gloves and
more! Just in case!
Vic and Carrole
have led 4 wheelers
through the trails
for many years.
Experience,
confidence, keeping
track of everyone
and making sure
we stayed together
was done with ease.
They did have a little
problem with their
lunch. We spotted
foil packets falling
from their jeep onto
the trail. The packets were hot dogs and buns wrapped in foil warming on the engine.
Packets were retrieved, one flat and the others a little dusty, but all still
edible….an early lunch was enjoyed….catsup and mustard included. Only a couple of folks needed some help getting through the steep rocky areas
and it was a very fun ride. We all enjoyed the beautiful day and having lunch in a field of wildflowers overlooking Mt Rainer…..it does not get any better
than that. A nice ride home and again a perfect day!
Friday Night at the drivers meeting we got lucky and were first in line for sign ups! We had heard about the “A & W” lunch to be served on this run and
could not resist Clover Springs…again! Good Times sponsored this run with Ken Kayser and his wife Lana at the helm.
At last year’s event, we were following Ken and Lana when they took a fork in the road. Lana suggested we take the opposite fork. When we spotted
them again, Lana was reeling out the cable while Ken was preparing to bail off into a 4 foot deep hole two car lengths long….filled with muddy water…
.in his Jeep. What was he thinking….we asked! He shifted to a low gear, went into the water and could not get out. Lana got a strap and cable around
a tree and Ken with the help of another Jeeper, winched the rig out. Water had killed the engine and invaded every corner of the Jeep. He did get it
running, but it was not running well as we returned to camp. This year I asked Lana if they had any problems from all of the water they took on. She
reported that it they finally got all of the problems solved just three weeks before this Trail Jam.
The ride out to Clover Springs was a lot warmer than the very cold ride we experienced the morning before. During our stop to air down, Ken gave
everyone the opportunity to introduce themselves. It is interesting to learn who you are traveling with for the day and where they come from. At the
introduction we learned that 7 Canadians from BC were attending Trail Jam. They had a long drive just to get to the campground. But winning the
“prize” for traveling the longest distance were Don and Kathy Boggs …all the way from Stuttgart, Arkansas.
Last October Don and Kathy decided to help trail host with their club The Wandering Willys. Not having a Jeep, Don started looking online and
Craigslist produced a Right Hand Drive 87 Jeep Wrangler in Port Orchard WA. His brother Glenn lives nearby and Don asked him to check it out and
see what kind of a “deal” they could get. Pictures and specs were sent by cell phone and they bought the Jeep for $2200 (asking price $3500)! Driving
it home Glenn found that the manual steering box was worn out and that the automatic transmission needed work. With that in mind, Don planned to
come out in May to work on the Jeep and get it “trail worthy”. Using online resources, parts were purchased and sent to his brother Glenn. The day
Continued on page 13

before Don’s departure from Arkansas to begin repairs, an EF3 a tornado tore through Stuttgart. For those who are not familiar with tornado country,
an EF3 tornado can pack winds up to 165 MPH. Don and Kathy own Rice Bowling Center and the building suffered considerable damage from the
tornado and the town “was a mess”. Check their website www.ricebowlingcenter.com for pictures. Needless to say, the trip to work on the Jeep had to
be canceled.
Finally repairs were made at the bowling alley and Don set out for Seattle on July 3rd to begin work on the Jeep at his brothers. Before leaving for the
Nile on July 8th they managed to make some repairs and modifications: Changed manual steering box to power steering requiring custom hoses for
RHD, radiator rebuilt, transmission rebuilt, differential gears changed from 3.07 to 4.10, Traclock added, front seats replaced with 2002 Sahara, shocks,
tires, brakes, muffler and tail pipe replaced and cup holders added! Whew!
Not quite finished with the job and after arriving at the Jamboree, they replaced the fuel pump, water pump, and carburetor. Talk about a marathon!
Things went well for 2 days on the trail, but on the way back from Divide on Friday one of
the power steering hoses was lost. They were able to make it back to camp, but would not
be able to make the last run on Saturday because of the custom parts required for the right
hand drive. Wally Reeves, gate keeper and ice cream connoisseur, insisted they take his
Jeep on the Clover Springs run. Don and Kathy give a big Thank You to Wally for the use
of his Jeep. They hope to attend the Jamboree next year with more confidence in the RHD.
Everyone enjoyed a nice ride up to the ridge when it was learned that one of the older
Jeeps blew an engine. Thanks to “Big Rick” Radcliff and his TJ….the driver and Jeep were
towed across the ridge and eventually back to camp! We are sure being towed by “Big
Rick” makes for a fun and fast ride home!
We gathered at the same lunch spot we had stopped at on Thursday. Jeeps were using up
the last piles of melting snow. Snowball fights broke out and a huge array of squirt guns
appeared….everyone either joined the fun or watched the antics of the last run this year
had to offer.
Mark Nelson had been planning for this day for some time. He wanted to honor his Mom and Dad and treat those on the run to an authentic A & W
lunch. In light of what had happened on Mark’s trip to the campground, it was an astounding effort by his family to take on the task of feeding more
than 35 people at the lunch stop.
Going back, for a moment, to Wednesday evening, Mark’s son Sam, arrived at camp in an attempt to locate their family that planned to join them for the
weekend. Sam reported that Mark was traveling on Chinook Pass in a pickup towing a car trailer belonging to Mark’s Dad. Inside the car trailer was
the family’s racing jeep. Sam
explained that while following
his dad over Chinook Pass he
noticed sparks coming from the
left rear tire on the truck. Using
2- way radios, Sam notified Mark
that he should pull off the road
immediately. Mark stepped on
the brakes and found that he had
none! In addition there was no
where to pull over, but finally he
found a wide spot with gravel
and managed to get the truck
and trailer to the side of the
road. With some quick thinking
on Marks part, he got the Jeep
out of the trailer before the truck and trailer were completely engulfed in flames. Arriving in
camp later that evening, weary from all that happened, fellow Jeepers rallied around Mark and his family, offering the food, equipment, necessities and
moral support needed to enjoy the weekend….And as real Jeepers do….they did!
Mark went on to tell about his dad, Norris “ Nel’s” Nelson and Mom Alma. They were introduced to Jeeping by Nel’s cousin, Barney Nelson nearly
60 years ago. Mark’s parents have told Mark he was almost born in a Jeep. His mom was pregnant with Mark as they rode the Jeep trails in Eastern
Washington. Cousin Barney led family and friends over the Naches pass in 1957 where they winched down over the cliff on the west side! Not sure
we’re ready for that one!
Nel’s was a founding member of Webfooters Jeep Club, Pacific NW Jeep Association which was later incorporated with the Pacific NW 4 Wheel Drive
Association celebrating it’s 50th anniversary in October.
Later Jeep interest later shifted to Jeep Racing. “Top Eliminator” awards were won by Nel’s and many of his children and grandchildren. “Grandpa
Nel’s” taught all his grandchildren (8) to race jeeps, and Liv Fode is one of the great young drivers on the courses today. Amazingly, Nel’s still gets
behind the wheel of the race jeep…just for a little fun! Thankfully Mark got the racing jeep out of the trailer before the trailer caught fire!
In Mark’s words….”History of the Racing Jeep”:
“The Jeep that was rescued from the “toy hauler” was my dad’s old race Jeep, that I had converted to a street and trail Jeep. It is licensed as a ‘69
CJ5, but it has an M38-A1 frame, ‘69 Buick V6 engine from a junk yard, and other assorted items from other jeeps, all put together by my dad and
friends. The jeep was raced by my dad, sister Karen, and her 3 daughters (Kirsten, Lauren & Liv), very extensively in the mid- 80’s to early-90’s.
Karen won her fourth top eliminator award in 1987 in this Jeep. My dad gave me the jeep about 11 years ago. My sons, daughters and I have worked on
it to make it “street legal” so we could take it on the Trail Jamboree’s. The first one we went on about 11 years ago, was the first time that 3 generations
of Nelson’s had been on the Naches Trail together. The Jeep still had on it’s racing suspension and “Desert Dog” tires, (which my dad wouldn’t let me
air down past 25 #’s). It made for a very stiff ride, and a pair of broken shocks. I drove the entire 3 days of trails, and finally my dad commented that he
now knows how my mom felt going over these same trails years before and had a new appreciation for my mom and what it was like to be a passenger
on these jeep trails.”
In 1963, on his Mom’s birthday, the family’s first A & W Drive-in Restaurant was purchased in Tacoma. Everyone in the family worked at the drive-in
weekends and summers. A second restaurant was purchased in the 70’s. Root Beer and hamburgers have been in the family a long time. Mark believes
that the A & W drive-ins supported the families Jeeping habits.
Mark spoke highly of his parents and what great role models he had growing up in the Jeeping world. All of their love, direction and hard work showed
as the Nelson clan served the restaurants favorites; A & W Teen Burgers including bacon and cheese, and Root Beer Floats…Made to Perfection! Just
how Grandpa Nel’s had taught them. Mark’s daughter Britt, her fiancée, Steve Fontana, son Josh and his girl friend, Kelsey Bates, son Sam, niece Liv
Fode, and family friend Kyle Branchick made the whole event look easy!
I
While all of this was happening at Trail Jam….Mark’s Mom and Dad were in the hospital. Mom had shoulder surgery and Dad had contracted
pneumonia. Mark is happy to report that they are recovering nicely at their home on Lake St. Claire. Maybe Nel’s and Alma can make it next year to the
20th Anniversary Celebration! I know I would love to meet them!

chicken, with ice cream for dessert were enjoyed by all. And what
people like most…… prizes…and they were in abundance! There was
another great bicycle, gift certificates, tee shirts, cash and great little
gadgets especially for Jeeping!
Saturday night was the “big dance”. Having a band this year meant the
chicken dance might be in jeopardy as not all bands are familiar with
that ritual. Thanks to Sam and Josh Nelson for humming the Chicken
Dance tune, while the band played back-up….The tradition continues!
The vendors work so hard supporting the event and bringing their
latest “trick stuff” for us to see. ARB, WARN, Chrysler Jeep DodgeBellevue and 4 Wheel parts performance centers provided driving
classes, displays and product information. We are so thankful for their
knowledge and support of this event.
$5,587 was raised for Wheelers for the Wounded. This organization’s
goal is to provide a weekend of off-roading and camping to our
country’s wounded military members from all over the United States.
www.wheelersforthewounded.com. Clubs will be hearing more from
this group next year as they come through Washington and we have
the opportunity to take our soldiers on an off-roading experience. The
money raised was a result of 50/50 raffle drawing, sale of Warn 60th
Anniversary Shirts, ice cream social sponsored by Raynproof Roofing,
the RTI competition and the Sunday Pancake Breakfast. What a great
way to honor our military hero’s!!
The last hurrah came Sunday Morning with a pancake breakfast
provided by the Wandering Wills Jeep Club. They served great
pancakes and gave everyone time to say goodbye to friends, old and
new.
Dusty clothes, tired kids, tents, RV’s and Jeeps were packed up and
readied for the trip home….or in some cases on to the next 4 wheeling
event!
Fond farewells followed by “see you next year” were heard throughout the campground.
Mark your calendars now for the Jamboree July 8 through 12, 2009. Registration begins February 16th…have that computer fired up as it is always a
sellout! Next year will be the Trail Jamboree’s 20th Anniversary Celebration. It is an event you won’t want to miss.
And we will return for our 3rd anniversary of participating in the Jamboree…hopefully with new tires….and maybe…just maybe… we will do
“everything”…including RIMROCK?

Attention
Motorized
Recreationists!
BRC has been working with
the Pirate4X4.com crew on
several recreational access
issues. Right now, they are
working diligently to generate
a big response to the Boxer/
McKeon Wilderness Bill from
the OHV community and they
need your help. Pirate’s goal
is to generate 2500 letters or
more that BRC can deliver
to Congress in opposition to
this bill. Time is ticking down
and the BlueRibbon Coalition
wants to help them exceed
their goal. Please help.
I have pasted a copy of the
Pirate
4X4.com
request
below, please take a couple
of minutes to read it over and
pass it on!
Thanks in advance for your
support, Ric Foster Public

The Pirate 4x4 Land Use
Crew Needs Your Help
Dear Motorized Enthusiasts,
Pirate4X4.com needs to make
a personal request to all OHV
enthusiasts
everywhere.
We would never make this
kind of request unless it was
extremely important, and
unless your response had
a good chance of making a
difference.
Here is the situation:
Years ago, key staff from
the Forest Service and the
Bureau of Land Management,
as well as leaders from some
of California’s radical antirecreation
groups,
made
a commitment to keep the
historic Furnace Creek Road
open. Well, guess who has
not kept their promise?
The anti’s are going back
on their word and trying to
close this trail forever. The
Forest Service, politicians,
and other land management
agencies are going back on
their commitments to the OHV
community.
Not only that, now they
are asking for even MORE
Wilderness in that area! U.S.
Senator Barbara Boxer and
U.S. Representative Howard
“Buck” McKeon are proposing
a bill that would designate
400,000 acres of Wilderness
in Mono County, CA along the
CA/NV border.
40 years ago the Wilderness
Act was passed to protect land
from development and things
like mining and commercial
clear-cut logging. This act is an
OUTDATED act, and NONE of
these things are happening in
this specific area. There are
many other ways to manage
this land than to shut it down
to everyone.
While some routes would
remain in this “roadless” area if
the bill passes (supposedly to
keep the OHV public satisfied)
this bill would close many
others, including the Furnace
Creek Road, a popular 4x4
route which has been in
existence since BEFORE
Inyo National Forest was even
created. The road was used at
September 2008
the turn of the last century for
ranching and mining, but there
is evidence of use since the
mid to late 1800’s!
Here’s the kicker: Years after
the federal land managers
and the radical anti groups
made a commitment to keep
the Furnace Creek Road
open, they want to use this
Wilderness bill to go back on
their word!
We REALLY need your help
on this one. We have a
GOOD chance of making a
difference and, at the very
least, saving this historic
trail if we get a big enough
response.
This
is
a
tremendous
opportunity. If we ALL team
up to fight for each other,
we can pack a huge punch.
PLEASE take 5 minutes
to join enthusiasts from
across the country and send
a letter! We’ve modified our
letter generator so that the job
is easy. We’ve even provided
a sample letter to help you in
writing your own.
Here is what YOU can do:
Step 1:
Go to the letter generator at
www.pirate4x4.com/letters
and click on the Boxer and
McKeon Wilderness Bill link.
That will take you to the letter
page.
Step 2.
Follow the directions on that
page. Either write a personal
letter (the preferred method)
or copy and paste the sample
letter.
Step 3.
Click <Preview & Send>, then
PLEASE forward this letter on
to your friends and family.
One more thing:
Pirate4X4.com has made
an agreement with the
BlueRibbon Coalition that
if we can get 2,500 letters
from the generator, BRC
will print them all out, go
to Washington DC and
HAND DELIVER the stacks
of letters to Senators and
Representatives. That way
we can maximize the impact
and they can’t just “delete”
an e-mail from us...
THANK YOU FOR YOUR
TIME!
The Pirate4X4.com Crew
www.pirate4x4.com
PS - BRC’s Executive Director,
Greg Mumm, has been on
several trips to Washington
DC lately and he reports that
the anti-recreation lobby has
been very active! BRC has
submitted written testimony
in a House Subcommittee
hearing on OHV use, and last
month he testified in person
at a Senate Subcommittee.
BRC has also been involved
in a new General Accounting
Office (GAO) study on OHV
use.
The
anti-recreation
zealots are setting the
stage for a very aggressive
legislative and regulatory
strategy for 2009.
This election cycle will be
very important for the OHV
community. PLEASE register
