Tragedies all, but
they’ve also created opportunities for design
innovation. “Sink or
Swim: Designing for a
Sea Change,” at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles,
December 13 to May 3,
documents global stories of destruction as
well as rebuilding efforts by the likes of Toyo
Ito and Shigeru Ban.
A first for the Annenberg, some of the exhibit’s 100 images were
commissioned by the institution, such as one by
Paula Bronstein of the
20-mile-long seawall
along Japan’s Sendai
coastline, or another by
Iwan Baan of the stilt
houses in the lake village of Ganvie, Benin,
referred to as the Venice
of Africa. The Annenberg also commissioned
a documentary on climate-resilient strategies
for waterfront communities that includes interviews with artists,
scientists, and architects, including Thom
Mayne of Morphosis.

Bigger screens, then smaller. Higher definition, less
lag time. Technology is ever changing, its impact
on interiors ever expanding, especially for the
workplace. To spark a dialogue on this dynamic topic,
Interior Design hosted its annual Tech + Design
conference in San Francisco. After the 150 attendees
toured offices such as Gensler’s for Visa or Studios
Architecture’s for Neustar, everyone convened at
Studio Libeskind’s Contemporary Jewish Museum
for presentations and conversations with tech
experts. To top the day off, editor in chief Cindy Allen
presented our first annual MakeItWork Awards.

As a fifth-generation New Yorker who just
gave birth to a sixth, Virginia Harper’s affection
for her hometown is obvious. Witness Hudson,
Virginia Harper Design’s stool-table hybrid for
Poltrona Frau. It was modeled after the faceted vertices of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s One World Trade Center. Six panels of
saddle leather—three solid, three perforated—are stitched to surround a
16-inch-high tubular steel frame. “Like a
glass facade, the perforations allow
you to peek into the form underneath,” Harper says. (The perforations also function as handy finger
pulls, for easy mobility.) Inside,
another table, this time with a
beech-plywood frame, nests
perfectly. poltronafrau.com.

room, the kids watch TV from a generous, meandering sectional by Francesco Binfaré. They might as well learn early about good Italian design.
This being a Belzberg project, a staircase is, of course, the pièce de résistance. Rising through the core of the house, where the boomerangs overlap,
the stair is a spiral. But not just any spiral. It’s asymmetrical rather than
composed of perfect circles. “It goes from skinny to fat, narrow to wide,”
he explains. “It forces you to pay attention.” Every single strip of European
white oak cladding the spiral was hand-cut and hand-laid, and the balustrades are clear glass bent with heat. “The hardest thing I’ve ever done,”
he states. Thanks to the glass and an oculus above, the stair furthermore
doubles as a light well through all three levels, constantly reflecting and
absorbing sunlight differently. Each trip up or down is a unique experience.
A simpler floating stair is a more direct route for the children to take from
their study, the family room, or the kitchen to their bedrooms, each with an
en suite bathroom, and the playroom, with its own deck. At the opposite end
of the upstairs is the master suite, offering treetop views through glass walls.
The bedroom’s sitting area features Paola Navone’s sprawling sofa and

If you’re seeking out
the masterworks of Finn
Juhl, you could head to
Ordrupgaard Museum
near Copenhagen. But
if Scandinavia isn’t on
your itinerary, New York
showroom Property is
offering official reproductions by Onecollection.
The late Danish architect revealed his fascination with contemporary
art in Pelican, his 1940
chair with arms drooping toward the floor, and
Poet, the 1941 sculptural
sofa Juhl designed for his
own home. The wavy
body of the Baker sofa,
1951, is divided into two
sheltering components.
Sinuosity extends to occasional pieces such as the teak Butterfly table, 1949, with a pine drop leaf and
an inlaid brass plate. Juhl embraced linear Asian forms in Japan, a 1953 suite of
seating in walnut or oak. His dalliances with tubular steel netted the Nyhavn
table, 1945, while Cubist art influenced a painted wood sideboard from 1955. Juhl
morphed into the spherical realm with his orblike pendant fixture and Circle, a
hand-tufted wool rug, both from 1963. propertyfurniture.com. circle 403
It’s hard to believe that more than three decades have passed since the Memphis Group
debuted at Milan’s Salone del Mobile. But that
beat goes on, thanks to two of the collective’s
founding members, Nathalie Du Pasquier and
George Sowden, and their new firm, CoopDPS.
Its debut effort, Post Crisis, is a collaboration
with textile manufacturer ZigZagZurich, the
collection’s title referencing the aftermath of
the 2008 financial crash. The impact, it seems,
was graphic, as sharp geometrics mingle with
abstract organics in a wash of bold primaries.
Specify any of the 24 patterns as either woven
upholstery fabric or a printed sheer, both in
Trevira CS polyester, polyester wall covering,
cotton percale bed linens,
or a woven cotton-wool
blanket. zigzagzurich.com.

Henzel Studio
Since founding his studio
in 1999, Calle Henzel has
collaborated with some of contemporary art’s biggest names,
Marilyn Minter and Jack Pierson
among them. But the designer is
a major talent in his own right.
To wit: his Nordic Raw rugs,
based on the effects of erosion
and thawing snow. The complementary Circles collection,
meanwhile, references ephemera: light reflections and the
moisture rings cups can leave.
Then there’s Abstract Action,
with the vibe of color-field paintings. All can be crafted of handknotted wool and silk or art silk.

When it comes to task chairs, comfort and aesthetics are priority number one. Lievore
Altherr Molina’s Catifa Sensit for Arper eschews extraneous mechanisms—and the bulk
typical of an ergonomic chair—delivering a lean design with an integrated back-recline
mechanism. The sawhorse base of Fattorini + Rizzini + Partners Design Advisory’s

How do I integrate color without making a whole-floor commitment? That was J+J Flooring Group’s most common client
question. The solution? Filtered Effects. The collection, from
the manufacturer’s tufted Invision brand, was inspired by photography, thus its five patterns are aptly named Chroma, Spectra,
Aperture, F-Stop, and Exposure. Ranging from demi planks to
12-foot broadloom, the concept provides pops of bright hues that
segue into soft, subtle neutrals—fading away, just like your flooring worries. space 10-118

One of the
more distinctive
profiles we’ve encountered
in the Mart this week is Infinium, a lounge
collection distinguished by rakish angles and kicky aluminum
legs. Up-and-comer Michael Bemis conceived the series while still an undergrad—he’s now a full-fledged industrial designer—and Arcadia immediately saw its potential. In addition to offering bold personality, the collection boasts complete flexibility.
From ganging tables to a pert loveseat, items are available in myriad finishes and can be
supplemented with options like privacy panels. Units link via hardware-free connectors,
enabling speedy assembly—and, when the mood strikes, reinvention. space 340

To create her collection of double-sided digitally printed glass
for Skyline Design, Patricia Urquiola shuffled sheets of translucent patterned acetate until she found just the right combination
of layers with Cipher, Overlay, and Check. “Skyline executes
very difficult glass treatments, so I wanted an equally rigorous
approach to the design—to do something complex,” Urquiola
divugled in the Haworth showroom, where Check fronts a breakout lounge. For the full lineup, head to Skyline. space 1060

Architects Alberto Basaglia and Natalia Rota Nodari specified sturdy
steel and supple polypropylene for S’mesh, their spare-yet-snug chair for
Diemmebi. But did they realize it was already destined for a makeover?
At Expo Milano 2015, the manufacturer launched a competition to reinterpret the design, giving detached backrests to 50 registered contestants to
get them started. The winner will be announced next March—but the real
champ is here in Chicago this week. space 7-2030B

Noé Duchaufour Lawrance waxes nostalgic about his youth
in southern France, where he spent afternoons skipping stones
across streams. Today, he’s conjured larger versions of those
stones as Colours, a seating system for Bernhardt Design.
Modules fall into two categories: freestanding and connected.
The former range from 32 to 59 inches long. The latter can form
arrangements up to 400 square feet. For upholstery to cover
the molded foam and the hardwood frames, choose any Bernhardt Textiles fabric or leather as well as COM. space 399

BELLA-DURA BY THE YARD
GRASSCLOTH
MITT
HONOREE GREEN INNOVATION
HONOREE TEXTILES: HEALTHCARE
WINNER SEATING: CONTRACT/LOUNGE/SINGLE
Cradle-to-cradle certified Silver, Bella-Dura is the
leading environmentally responsible textile. These
revolutionary fabrics are woven with the only fiber on the
market, synthetic or natural, that begins as a by-product
of post-industrial waste and ends its life as a fully
recyclable product. Bella-Dura is available exclusively
through distributors.
Bella-Dura offers the ultimate performance for
the toughest healthcare environments. These
revolutionary textiles are solution dyed, exceptionally
durable, bleach cleanable, inherently anti-microbial,
pill, stain and fade resistant, 100% recyclable and
made in the USA. Bella-Dura is available exclusively
through distributors.
With its soft silhouette shape and detailed loop cord stitching, the Mitt chair is reminiscent of a baseball glove,
the inspiration for El Salvadoran design duo Harry and Claudia Washington. Relaxed, casual and open, Mitt allows
interaction in different ways, and use varies depending on the situation. A functional tailored leather handle and
integrated weight-locking casters enhance spatial versatility in collaborative workspaces, easily transforming open
areas to more intimate meeting zones. bernhardtdesign.com

When it comes to task chairs, comfort and aesthetics are priority number one. Lievore
Altherr Molina’s Catifa Sensit for Arper eschews extraneous mechanisms—and the bulk
typical of an ergonomic chair—delivering a lean design with an integrated back-recline
mechanism. The sawhorse base of Fattorini + Rizzini + Partners Design Advisory’s
powder-coated steel table, Cross, is equally straightforward. But the shapes and shades
of Parentesit acoustic wall panels, which accommodate LED backlighting and a Bluetooth
speaker, are nice ‘n’ lively. See page 26 for more. space 339

For upholstery to cover
the molded foam and the hardwood frames, choose any Bernhardt Textiles fabric or leather as well as COM. space 399
win-win situation
Architects Alberto Basaglia and Natalia Rota Nodari specified sturdy
steel and supple polypropylene for S’mesh, their spare-yet-snug chair for
Diemmebi. But did they realize it was already destined for a makeover?
At Expo Milano 2015, the manufacturer launched a competition to reinterpret the design, giving detached backrests to 50 registered contestants to
get them started. The winner will be announced next March—but the real
champ is here in Chicago this week. space 7-2030B

CROSS lines
A fascination with information systems was what first
drew Benjamin Aranda and Christopher Lasch together when
they were sharing a finals studio at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Today, their
digitally driven firm, Aranda/Lasch, has a New York studio, headed
by Aranda, and a second studio in Tucson, where Lasch is based. Still
committed to their original interest in modularity even as their work
grows in scale, the duo seem to have reached a kind of critical mass:
Their very first building, a retail venue in Miami’s Design District, is slated for completion in the spring, and they’re in the midst of designing an outdoor theater in Libreville,
Gabon. In addition, their work has been exhibited at New York’s Museum of Arts and Design and Beijing’s Gallery All, and their collaboration with artist Matthew Ritchie continues
with a suite of sculptures and public seating. We figured it was a good time to check in.

The London Design Festival fair
Designjunction’s director, Deborah Spencer,
has a personal connection to sudden infant
death syndrome. Her sister and brother-in-law
lost a 3-month-old son, Edward, to SIDS earlier
this year—which is why they founded Teddy’s
Wish to raise funds to aid research. That’s also
why Designjunction hosted “A Child’s Dream,”
a selling exhibition in support of the just launched
organization.
Tom Dixon and Faye Toogood were among the
leading creatives invited to participate in “A Child’s
Dream” by customizing one of two British classics:
a task lamp by Kenneth Grange for Anglepoise or a
chair by Ercol’s Lucian Ercolani. Results, auctioned
online, generated the equivalent of $15,600.

why books?
For over 80 years, Interior Design has brought the best in interiors — projects and
products — to the design community, becoming the most trusted and sought-after
resource in the industry. Interior Design's hardcover book series brings today's most
forward-thinking projects to the desks of design clients, designers, and design fans via
big, bold, colorful photos and informative layouts. Impressively sized at 9" x 12", these
project-filled books are produced at the level of a luxury art book. Interior Design Books
serve as an important reference for the trade and consumer design audience.
