ORDER Sons of Italy T R I E S T E L O D G E | H A M I L T O N President’s Message M y fellow members, Brothers and Sisters of the Order Sons of Italy – Trieste Lodge. Thank you to everyone who attended our Annual Spaghetti Supper on May 4th. A total of $5000 was raised from the event and has been donated to the McMaster Children’s Hospital. Congratulations to Guido Di Cesare, Joe Mongiardi, Joe Grimaldi, Lucio Palazzo and Anthony Chiarelli on the work they put into organizing the event and making it successful. Thank you to the McMaster Italian Association for volunteering their time to serve the pasta that evening. On Tuesday May 17th, the Trieste Lodge executive initiated our first “Annual Spring Networking Breakfast” which was attended by representatives from the Roma Imperia Lodge executive, Sons of Italy Housing Corporation, Sons of Italy Charitable Corporation and the members of 90th Anniversary Committee. The goal of the event was to connect the various groups and allow them the opportunity to share their future goals and accomplishments of the past year. Feedback from the event was very positive. For next year we look to widen the audience to our general membership and further share information of all the great work being done by the organizations associated with the Sons of Italy in Hamilton. I truly hope that this will be the start of an ongoing tradition with the lodge. I am pleased to report that the Order Sons of Italy of Canada had a very successful National Convention in Brantford over the weekend of May 28 & 29. I would like to express my appreciation to our Brothers and Sisters in Brantford for their hospitality. Our lodge was well represented by JUNE 2011 our delegates and I would like to extend my thanks to the delegation for their participation in the convention. Congratulations to National President Josie Cumbo and Trieste Lodge Past Presidents Joe Monachino (1st National Vice-President), Carm Filice (2nd National Vice President) and David Morganti (National Orator) on being elected to a second term on council. I thank Frank Merolli (who did not run for re-election) for the time and dedication he has put toward the order as a National Trustee. I wish also to acknowledge and congratulate Brother Livio DiNello, who was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Grand Lodge for his dedication to the Order Sons of Italy. Congratulations to the Sons of Italy Choir on hosting the “Coro Conegliano” from Friuli and over 200 guests at the SOI Hall on May 31st. What a great way to promote the Italian culture with song and also represent the lodge as our ambassadors to this choir from Italy. I am also excited that we are partnering with the Tiger-Cats this summer to help raise some money towards our 90th Anniversary Campaign for Ronald McDonald House and the Bella Vita Senior’s Day Program. The Tiger-Cats have provided us with ticket vouchers that can be redeemed for any Tiger Cat regular season game (except labour day). The cost of the voucher is $35 and will allow you to purchase a $45 ticket. $15 dollars of each voucher sold will go towards our charity campaign. If you are interested please contact any member of the executive. As part of this arrangement, on June 22nd the Sons of Italy will be running the 50/50 draw at the Hamilton Tiger-Cat’s Pre-Season game. We are looking for volunteers to help sell tickets at the event. Please contact anyone from the executive if you are interested in helping. On July 29th the Tiger-Cats will be hosting Italian Night for the game against the Montreal Alouettes. There will be Italian flags, cont’d on page 2 NEXT GENERAL MEETING: Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 6:30 pm L I B E R T Y E Q U A L I T Y F R A T E R N I T Y President’s Message (cont’d from page 1) porcetta sandwiches, gelato and most importantly our lodge will be featured that day with the SOI Choir and a cheque presentation at half time. Please come out to the game that evening and show your support. • Communication • Family A reminder to our membership; our annual Golf Tournament will be held on June 23rd, 2010. For those members who have yet to register, please contact Frank Merolli. Newsletter - We have enhanced the design and content of our newsletter by engaging the membership and other local groups for input. The circulation of the newsletter has also increased to include individuals outside the membership. As all of our members are aware, June is our election meeting. I personally look forward to running for another term and the opportunity to serve a second year as President. I also wish to extend my best wishes to all the candidates. All of the nominees should be congratulated for putting their names forward for election. In retrospect, I am amazed at how quickly the last year has passed. It has been a great honour to serve as your President. As I approach the end of the year, I wish to thank the executive, committee chairs and the many members who have stepped up with hard work and dedication to our Lodge. I am a firm believer that it’s not the institution that delivers, it’s the people within it! Together we have achieved the goals we set out at the start of the term. Back in June 2010 the newly elected Trieste Lodge executive members came together for an off-site meeting to establish a direction for the year with a focus on the following four areas: • Fraternity • Charity Over the course of the past year the Executive has put our focus on these areas with the following results: Web Presence – We have expanded our internet footprint by using social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. This has provided us with new channels to communicate the great work the lodge is doing and generate more visibility with younger audiences. We now have organizations across Canada, the US and Italy following the Trieste Lodge via these sites. We are leveraging email as the main vehicle for communicating with our membership on upcoming events, announcements, members who have passed away and in delivering the newsletter more efficiently than by traditional mailing. Membership Committee – A Membership Committee has been established with the goal of ensuring our members’ information is accurate and up to date. A membership survey was created and mailed out to the general body for feedback on the events we run, how the executive is doing, and suggestions on where we should take the club going forward. Partnerships – We have enhanced and created new partnerships with other local Italian organizations such as Festitalia, McMaster’s Italian Student Association and CIBPA. From a charity perspective we continue to nurture existing partnerships and develop new ones such as Hamilton Health Sciences and Ronald McDonald House. Membership Involvement – The executive has been active in reaching out to our membership and past presidents for support in getting involved on committees. The response has been outstanding and has helped bring members of different generations closer together through the sharing of ideas. In closing, on behalf of the executive, we wish to extend to you and your families our best wishes for a safe and enjoyable summer. Fraternally yours, Robert A. Look for posters announcing a festa or sagra as you travel around Italy, even in smaller villages. Many Italian towns have outdoor music concerts beginning in June, too. Although you will probably find other local festivals, here are some of the highlights. Italy’s Festa della Repubblica on June 2 is a national holiday. The Feast of Corpus Christi or Corpus Domini, 60 days after Easter, and the Feast Day of San Giovanni (St. John the Baptist), June 24, are two June holidays that will be celebrated in many parts of Italy. Corpus Domini - Here are some good places to go for Corpus Domini festivals. In Rome, an outdoor evening mass is celebrated at San Giovanni in Laterno, Rome’s cathedral followed by a procession led by the Pope from there to Santa Maria Maggiore. Orvieto has a costumed procession of over 400 people and streets are decorated with flowers. Castelrotto in the Trentino-Alto Adige region has a big festival. Infiorata, spectacular flower petal art displays, are held in many Italian towns the Sunday after Corpus Domini. Luminara of Saint Ranieri is celebrated June 16, the eve of feast day of Saint Ranieri, Pisa’s patron saint. The Arno River, buildings lining the river, and bridges are illuminated with the flames of over 70,000 lumini, small glass candle holders. The Historic Regatta of Saint Ranieri is the next day, June 17th, in Pisa. Four boats, one from each of Pisa’s districts, row against the Arno River’s current. When a boat arrives at the finish line, one man climbs up a 25-foot rope to reach the victory flag. Sagra di Saint Giovanni is the oldest historic event on Lake Como. Hundreds of tiny lamps float in the lake and there’s a big fireworks display the evening. The following morning brings a boat parade with traditional boats decorated with flowers followed by folk dancing and flag throwing competitions. Events are held the weekend closest to St. John’s Day, June 24. San Giovanni Feast Day is celebrated in Florence the Sunday following June 24 with a medieval tournament followed by music, drinking, and feasting. In the evening on the Arno River, there is a palio of rowboats carrying lit candles followed by fireworks. Festival of St. John is also celebrated in Turin, Genoa, and Gressoney-SaintJean in the Val D’Aosta. International Ceramics Festival comes to Montelupo in Tuscany the last week of June. A Medieval Festival is recreated in the Umbrian town of Bevagna the last week of June. The festival was first started in 1958 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti with the intention of bringing together the old and new worlds of Europe and America. It’s in Spoleto in central Italy’s Umbria region. SS Pietro and Paulo day is celebrated on June 29 in Rome. McMaster Italian Association The McMaster Italian Association has ended one of its most successful years to date. Our year began with our first annual soccer tournament, which we held on campus. Teams from within McMaster, as well as one from Ryerson University’s Italian Club, competed in the tournament. The next event was our first ever Pasta Dinner, which allowed both members and nonmembers to enjoy homemade, allyou-can-eat pasta. This event was a huge success, as we went through almost 40 pounds of pasta! Following the Pasta Dinner, we held our yearly Montreal trip. We brought 100 students to Montreal to enjoy the culture and nightlife that the city has to offer. This is our most popular event of the year and our members look forward to the amazing time that they are guaranteed to have when they travel with our club. Finally, our closing event was our Formal. Held at the Venetian Club, it was a chance for members and sponsors to gather and celebrate the wonderful year that we were blessed to have had. The night was filled with dinner, dancing, and _BusinessCards.indd 2 Italian culture. It was at the formal that our executive team made our year end donation of $1500 to Jennifer Laughton, of the McMaster Children’s Hospital. Members of the McMaster Italian Association, past and present, attended the Sons of Italy Spaghetti Dinner and helped by selling tickets and serving pasta. It was a great event and we were happy to be involved and to help the McMaster Children’s Hospital. We would like to thank the Sons of Italy for all of the wonderful support this year. It is this support that allows the McMaster Italian Association to fulfill its commitment to the community, and to further develop the cultural aspect of our association. We value your partnership and hope to continue our involvement in the future. Grazie a tutti! When Petawawa was made a military camp, the internees were sent to New Brunswick where Osvaldo spent another 2 ½ years. Italy joined the Allied forces in September of 1943 but he was not released until May of 1945. He spent 5 years in interment, never having been charged with a crime. One of the worst aspects of his imprisonment was the verbal abuse and insults from citizens when they were marched on the Exhibition grounds in Toronto. He remembers life in the camp as bearable, provided that no attempt was tried to go over the barbed wire fences. He knew the meaning the circle placed on the jackets they wore. About the food, he couldn’t complain. There is truth which teaches us that the past is never dead, indeed, often it is not past. In June, 1940 the Italian community in Canada was convulsed when Benito Mussolini declared war on Great Britain and Canada. The Defense of Canada Regulations came into effect. The government had powers to defeat attempts at subversion, to question, arrest and confine citizens who were judged to be “enemy aliens”. Osvaldo was born in Hamilton in August of 1921 of immigrant parents from Marzocca, Ancona Le Marche Italy. When his father Gaspara Giacomelli became ill their family returned to their farm in Italy in 1930. In 1939, his father did not want him drafted into the Italian army allied with the Nazi forces. So Osavldo was sent back to Hamilton alone in 1939. At the age of 18 he began working on the railroad. Irony affects our lives. In June of 1940 Osvaldo was approached by a police chief in the Bronte rail yard and ordered to accompany the chief to Oakville. He was declared an enemy alien, jailed in Hamilton briefly, brought to the Don jail in Toronto for a month and then finally to the Exhibition Grounds. He was deemed to be disloyal to Canada, dangerous to the welfare of the state and as a result his detention was ordered. After his release in 1945 he returned to Hamilton where he worked for decades at Stelco. He married and raised five children. He survived and carried on. This remarkable man never expressed bitterness over his interment. He was a loyal patriotic Canadian. Proud of his Italian culture and heritage. He passed on to his family the wisdom derived from his past trials. His greatest pride: His Family! Osvaldo Giacomelli, a humble man still teaching us the past is never dead. A man worth knowing, worth remembering. By Bob Savelli Event Calendar For those wishing to help with the following events, please see your Executive.
