SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB El Señor Presidente. Ahoy there, Sportsfishers! We had a great kick off to the month with some outstanding captures [see cover] and the fly-fishing skills demo’ at the club meeting night. Where we got to see fly tying, watch some local footage and try our hand at casting the long wand. Big thanks to Browny, Deano and Trav’. As well as the “Saltwater Fly Workshop” for the stickers and prizes for the upcoming Fly Fishing Comp’ weekend. It’s starting ! Barra season is upon us so dust off the Barra gear, load up with tags and get into it. “I choose to Tag & Release all locally caught Barramundi” It is not illegal to take a Barra. But remember, ours’ is a delicate Barramundi fishery with small creek systems right at the southern edge of their geographical territory. Scotty - President NBSFC Keep in mind that this species is very vulnerable to fishing pressure. If we want to continue to have a healthy Barramundi fishery, catch and release should be encouraged, both inside and out of the club. Trout, Cod and Reds are better for the table anyway. See pg. 8 Please keep safe and I look forward to hearing about some memorable captures in the coming month. Regards Scott [Scotty] Medling President NBSFC 2 SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB SKILL DEMONSTRATION A regular feature of all NBSFC m onthly m eetings is SKILL DEM ONSTRATIONS. Good laughs for experienced m em bers and a “So that’s the secret” m om ent for newbies. On the Fly Thanks to: NBSFC Members: Dean Lucas [Saltwater Fly Workshop & Harfin Reels], and also Travis Brinkhuis and Wayne Brown. Travis showed amazing raw footage of Razorback Sportsfishing sight casting fly’s at teased up sailfish for spectacular hookups. Dean spoke of 1-1 gear ratios, walking the flats and 800mm+ Barra. Wayne demonstrated how “easy” it was to tie flies. At the casting session on the jetty, amongst the deafening bull whip cracks of the novices, Brownie picked junior Toby Mason as Having the best style. Barramundi Rigging Night @ the October meeting! Sportsfisher asked ANSA Fly Fish 2,3&4kg record holder Brownie, what was it about SW fly-fishing that’s got him hooked? “…it’s Hunting - Sight, Chase, Target, Trick, and Capture”. 3 SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB Fly Fishing Competition Still time to Register! Unna captured 2 Goldens’ on the same day with the highlight definitely the 5.84KG fish caught on 1KG line class Gamefishing tackle! Scoring her 876 points and a pending Australian National Sportsfishing Association [ANSA] Gamefishing record! This also includes any weigh sheets to be included in the Capture section must be handed to the weigh master maximum 30 days from the date of capture for club points. Except June where all information must be submitted by 1st July. Species indicated with a “*” should be tagged with NSW Fisheries tags only. DO NOT use the ANSA WA tags to tag these species. There is no restriction on gear type used to capture the fish i.e. 100lb hand line is acceptable for tagging, this is to ensure maximum chance of survival. It is promoted to tag fish under that of the “minimum length”, as long as the fish has a good chance of survival. The minimum length is only relevant for club points. Both overall & fork length must be noted on tagging sheets for Threadfin Salmon (King & Blue). If tagging Black Jewfish it is important that a correct identification is made. There is a particular species that looks very similar that only grows to a short length. This can cause some confusion as they could be misidentified as a juvenile Black Jewfish. These fish should not be tagged. 13 SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB A warm welcome to this Month’s new members! A HOY !
