(Buddy) Teevens III, who as a player led Dartmouth to the 1978 Ivy League championship and as a coach led Dartmouth football to back-to-back Ivy League titles in 1990 and 1991, returned as the head coach of the Big Green football program in 2005. Last year, he led the squad to its best conference record at 5-2 in 17 years to place third in the final Ivy League standings. Only a loss in four overtimes on the road kept Dartmouth from earning a share of the conference crown. Teevens, 57, was Dartmouth’s coach from 1987 through 1991. During his final two seasons, the Big Green posted identical overall records of 7-2-1. With a 6-1 record, Dartmouth shared the 1990 Ivy title with Cornell. In 1991, Dartmouth won the outright championship with a 6-0-1 mark. His overall record at Dartmouth entering the 2014 the coach season is 58-80-2. Teevens holds the Robert L. Blackman Endowed Coaching Position, named in memory of Bob Blackman, who coached Dartmouth from 1955 to 1970, and created Coach Buddy Teevens through the gift of Henry M. (Hank) Paulson ’68, an outstanding offensive tackle who played for Blackman from 1965–67. In addition to restoring Dartmouth’s rich football tradition, Teevens has been an integral force in a series of major improvements to Dartmouth’s football facilities, including installation of a FieldTurf surface on Memorial Field for the 2006 season, the opening of the new Floren Varsity House that includes training, dressing and meeting facilities in 2007, and light towers in 2011, not to mention the video scoreboard last year. From 2002 through 2004, Teevens was the head coach at Stanford University. Prior to that, Teevens was on Steve Spurrier’s staff at the University of Florida from 1998 to 2001. His first game with the Gators was The Teevens family (l-r): Eugene IV, Buddy, Kirsten, and the 1999 Orange Bowl. In his three full seasons at Florida, the Gators Lindsay and Matt Knittle. went 29-9, participated in three bowl games and finished among the top 12 in the final polls each season. 2014 captains From 1997 to 1998, Teevens was the offensive coordinator and receivers coach at the University of Illinois under Ron Turner. From 1992–96, Teevens was the head coach at Tulane University. He rebuilt that program and recruited most of the team that went 11-0 in 1998. Teevens began his coaching career in 1979 as the running backs coach at DePauw University. In 1980, he became the offensive coordinator at Boston University and remained with the Terrier program until 1985 when he was appointed the head football coach at the University of Maine. Highly regarded in football circles, Teevens has been an integral part of the famed Manning Passing Academy since its inception 18 years ago. He serves as an associate director of the camp, overseeing all aspects of the on-field operation and coaching staff. He also has been on panels for “Practice Like Pros” to extol the virtues of cutting down on full-contact practices by focusing on technique, which in turn limits injuries suffered in practice and in games. At Dartmouth, Teevens was honored as the New England Coach of the Year for the 1991 season. An honorable mention All-America quarterback in 1978, he led the (Left to Right): Sean Ronan, head coach Big Green to the Ivy title that year. A native of Pembroke, Mass., Teevens and his Buddy Teevens, Stephen Dazzo wife, Kirsten, have two children: Lindsay who lives with her husband, Matt, in Lebanon, N.H., and Buddy, Jr. who joined the 2014 football staff staff this summer and resides locally with his wife, McKeanna, and son, Eugene V. A fleet outfielder, he hit .295 last year while helping the Big Green win the Red Rolfe Division championship last spring, but his only extrabase knocks were a couple of doubles. He’s been to the plate 182 times in his three years of college baseball and is still looking for his first round-tripper. A home run hitter? Yup, that’s exactly what he is, but on a field a foul ball away from Biondi Park. As a wide receiver on the Big Green football team, the 6foot-1, 200-pound Patterson has caught 31 passes the past two years with eight of them — more than one in four — going for a touchdown. Talk about going deep, the graduate of James Island Charter School in Charleston, South Carolina, has had TDs of 54, 56 and 67 yards the past two seasons and has averaged a healthy 38.8 yards on his touchdown receptions during that span. “I like to think I have a knack for it,” Patterson said of the home run ball on the football field. “The big thing is I have done it before. The coaches trust me, and Dalyn (Williams) and (Alex) Park trust me. So when we have a good matchup on the outside, they are willing to take a shot on me because they have seen me do it before. That’s really all it is. Making the most of an opportunity.” Which perfectly sums up Patterson’s career as that rare and dying breed, a Division I athlete in two major sports who has made the most of his opportunities. As a freshman wideout he led the Big Green with 301 receiving yards and was second in catches with 24. “A lot of times you have such depth that as a freshman, no matter what you do, you don’t have a real shot to see significant playing time,” he said. “Coach (Jarrail) Jackson gave me a chance early on. He told me and Kirby (Schoenthaler) it was going to be a clean slate and the best players would play. There were some injuries that year and when we got our opportunities early we did pretty well.” Patterson’s first real opportunity on the baseball diamond came a year later. “I was playing left field and was starting once the Ivy games rolled around,” he said. “But then our center fielder, Nick Ruppert, went down with a broken hand and I took over center, which is my natural position.” Patterson hit .255 and stole six bases in eight tries, but perhaps most importantly had just one error in 65 attempts while gunning down two runners. The opportunity the unassuming senior is most thankful for, of course, is simply the chance to play two sports at one of the top colleges in the nation after thinking he would end up playing one or the other — but not both — somewhere else. “I was probably a better baseball player until my junior year of high school,” he said. “That’s when I kind of hit my stride. I had a really good junior season in football. I had always pretty much assumed that I would play college baseball. But Continued on page 26 Insure the future. Personal and Business Insurance A. B. Playing Catch Up Featuring seniors evan Chrustic and alex Park By Charlotte Brackett Evan Chrustic One is a defensive end. The other is a quarterback. Neither is on the field at the same time. But both know what it means to be a Dartmouth football player. Evan Chrustic and Alex Park are entering their senior years and will open their final season on home turf. It is no secret that competing academically and athletically in the Ivy League is a challenge, but both seniors have found a way to be successful, with a little help from their Big Green family. A native of Andover, New Jersey, Chrustic is a sociology major who is entering his third year on the defensive line. He started all 10 games as a junior in 2013, leading the Big Green with six tackles for a loss and ranking third on the team with six passes defended. He was second-team All-Ivy and earned the team’s Kenneth T. Young Award, which is given to the sophomore or junior defender who has contributed the most to the success of the team. Park hails from Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, and is majoring in history. The senior, who transferred from the University of New Hampshire after a redshirt season there, has given Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach Buddy Teevens the luxury of two quarterbacks on the roster capable of starting, as he did for most of his sophomore campaign. In his career, Park has thrown for 1,701 yards while completing 61.9 percent of his passes — currently the highest success rate in Dartmouth history. And just about everything he says comes with tongue planted firmly in cheek. The seniors took some time out of their busy preseason schedules to answer some questions about the upcoming season, while also reflecting on their time at Dartmouth. What made you choose Dartmouth? Evan Chrustic: I wanted to attend Dartmouth because I was able to continue my athletic career at a high level while also being able to pursue a degree at one of the top colleges in the world. Alex Park: The world-famous academic reputation. Describe the feeling you get when you walk out onto the field before the first game of the season. EC: I get a mixed feeling of nerves and excitement knowing that we have the potential to accomplish great things. AP: I feel extremely fortunate that I get to play another year of football. Alex Park When I grow up, I want to be… EC: in the NFL. Whether I’m playing, coaching or managing. AP: a DJ with my two brothers, Ian and Austin. What is your favorite part of living in the Upper Valley? EC: All the opportunities the great outdoors has to offer. There aren’t many schools where you can go hiking, swimming, etc., in some of the most scenic areas in the Northeast. AP: The people here are extremely friendly. What is one of your pregame rituals? EC: One of my rituals is to try and play out the game in my head and visualize what’s going to happen. AP: Kirby Schoenthaler, Bo Patterson, and I usually sing a BBMak song in harmony before we head to the locker room. When you have free time away from academics and football, how do you like to spend it? EC: I like to spend it relaxing with some of the other guys. We are all on the same grind and when we get free time, we get together and watch TV or play video games. Anything to take our mind off the work week really. AP: I actually have an over the phone game of Go Fish going on with two of my friends from home. What is a movie that you like that may surprise people? EC: One of my favorite movies is The Bucket List. It does a good job of conveying the message that nobody knows how much time we have on earth so enjoy it while it lasts. AP: Joey McIntyre, Coach Nagle, and I usually sit down once a week to watch our favorite movie, Point Break. What is something that not a lot of people know about you? EC: I used to play a lot of sports. I played soccer, basketball, and baseball, wrestled and did track. I have always been a serious competitor on the field. AP: I have always wanted to be a lead singer in a rock and roll band. Besides football, what sports do you like to watch on TV? EC: I’m a big fan of college basketball and professional hockey. AP: I have always enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics. Particularly the Dutch distance speed skating team. EC: Enjoy every moment out there on the field. As Coach McCorkle has noted multiple times, we only have 40 hours of actual game time (1 hour each game x 10 games each year x 4 years) so you need to make the most of every minute out there. AP: Enjoy every minute. It goes by quickly. What does being a member of the Big Green family mean to you? EC: Being a member of the Big Green family means so much to me. I’m surrounded everyday by 100 guys that are going to be lifelong brothers, along with an entire staff of coaches that will be close friends and mentors whenever we need anything. Additionally, once you’re a Dartmouth football player, you’re a Dartmouth football player for life, and the alumni continue to remain a part of the Big Green family. AP: I feel honored to be part of such a storied program in terms of both academics and athletics. What is one song that you listen to before each game? EC: “Can’t be Touched” by Roy Jones. AP: “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. If your teammates had to describe you in one word, what would it be? Bruce M. DartMouth Football 25 Continued from page 9 after my junior year of football I started being seen more as a football player.” While Patterson was being mildly recruited by South Carolina colleges for baseball, schools he was drawing football interest from were North Carolina State, Vanderbilt, TCU and others. “I thought they would pull the trigger and they all got really close, but they never did.” With that he turned his attention to the Ivy League, visiting Harvard and Dartmouth among others. “The one thing I knew was I wanted to play football,” he said. “Every camp I went to, or any junior day, I would talk to the coach and ask if they would entertain the idea of me playing baseball. I wasn’t dead set on playing baseball but I really wanted to if I could. “Coach Teevens played two sports here, so I think he struggled to say no when I asked him that question,” Patterson added with a chuckle. Buddy Teevens, who played football and ice hockey at Dartmouth, gave Patterson the green light, although he knew it wouldn’t be easy. “It’s different now than when I played,” he said. “Now we train year around. But he’s a gifted athlete, a true competitor and a tough kid who has made it work.” Baseball coach Bob Whalen’s first captain at Dartmouth was Mark Johnson, who set records as a Big Green quarterback and eventually went on to play seven years in the big leagues. But as the years have gone by Whalen has seen the two-sport athlete almost disappear. “There used to be significantly less overlap in terms of the requirements,” he explained. “In the Ivy League some years ago, you were much more limited in what you were able to do out of season, and so the things that they would have to miss for their out-of-season sport was minimal. Now it is significant. So much evaluation and team building goes on in what other people would consider out of season that you have to be exceptional.” It’s hardly a surprise that the toughest challenge Patterson faces in doubling up comes at the plate each spring. “Hitting is such a fine-tuned, muscle-memory skill,” he said. “Repetition is how you get better in baseball. With football in the off-season you just stay in shape. You get stronger and you get bigger but you are not playing football in the off-season. Baseball you pretty much play year around with summer ball, fall ball and spring. “I am missing two out of three so there is always an adjustment phase. The first couple of weeks I am pretty bad.” 26 DartMouth Football The surprise would be if he weren’t, according to Whalen. “Not playing in the summer really hurts him in baseball, but it is something I understand and am completely supportive of because we were a complement to the recruiting process rather than driving the recruiting process,” he said. “I am 100 percent OK with it. “There’s a reason why they play 16 games in the NFL in 162 in baseball. The one part of our game that is an everyday thing is hitting. Look at Michael Jordan. You can have that discussion, is he the greatest athlete in history or whatever? He never hit .200. And then there is John Kruk. So I don’t fault Bo for that. He’s a great kid. He is a very good teammate and he does things that contribute to us winning games.” Missing spring football practice doesn’t set Patterson back nearly as much as missing summer baseball does. “The playbook changes a little from year to year, so in a sense I’m kind of like a freshman learning my plays every year,” he said. “There’s carryover that makes it a little easier, but once you strap on the helmet and pads, it is the same for everyone because you don’t play football year-round. “I have had a lot of people ask me how much better I would be if I just played one sport, but on a nice fall day I can’t imagine not running out of Leverone. And the same goes for a warm spring day on Red Rolfe. I couldn’t see myself in the stands at either sport. It’s too much fun playing, and that’s the reason I do it.” This Bo who knows football and baseball really is a man for all seasons. “It’s a little cliché,” he said with a smile, “but I like football better in the fall and baseball better in the spring.” Patterson is a history major at Dartmouth, but if he has his druthers it will be a while before he puts his degree to work. “I’ve said it a million times,” he said. “I’m going to keep playing as long as I can if that means going to Europe or going to Canada for football or to the Midwest to play independent baseball.” If his four years at Dartmouth have taught us anything, he’ll be a home run. Running back Rob Hollomon, a Sports Network All-American last year, is the offensive star for these Blue Devils. As his statistics go, so does the team. Against Towson he racked up 161 yards on the ground and 48 more on receptions to lead CCSU to the surprising victory. But Albany held him to just 33 rushing yards in a 19-0 shutout, and future Dartmouth opponent Holy Cross allowed him to post less than 100 combined yards rushing and receiving in a 20-7 Head Coach Pete Rossomando Rob Hollomon contest last week. Containing Hollomon will be the top priority for the Dartmouth defense. But don’t sleep on quarterback Nick SanGiacomo, who has completed just over 60 percent of his passes and averages more than 230 yards per game. He is also showing much more mobility in his junior campaign having attempted more rushes in three games than he did all of 2013. And to whom does SanGiacomo look to throw first and foremost? Wide receiver Tyrell Holmes, who leads the team with 17 receptions, 265 yards and two of the Blue Devils’ three touchdowns through the air. Only Hollomon out of the backfield has more than five receptions with 15, while no one on the squad has even 80 receiving yards. The CCSU defense has proven to be adept against the pass, allowing less than 150 yards per game, but its opponents have found a bit of success on the ground with an average of 184 yards. Safeties Chris Abner and Josh Celerin have been the team’s most active tacklers with 27 and 23, respectively. Abner also has one of the two Blue Devil interceptions while Celerin has swatted away three passes. Linebacker C.J. Morrison is a handful as is Josh Alaeze, but the latter (who owns CCSU’s only sack) was unavailable last week. When it comes to kicking, Ed Groth is the Blue Devils’ man. He has fared better punting the ball as compared to his place kicking, however, as he has averaged over 38 yards per punt and dropped four of 13 inside the opponent’s 20. Of his four field goal attempts, the first three were off the mark before he converted a 27-yarder at Holy Cross. Groth has knocked all three of his PATs through the upright. The Northeast Conference coaches pegged Central Connecticut to finish the season in fourth place in the league standings under first-year head coach Pete Rossomando. The Blue Devils’ 13th head coach, Rossomando spent the past five seasons guiding the University of New Haven to a 42-13 record and two NCAA Division II playoff appearances. He was named the Division II National Coach of the Year in 2012 as his squad was ranked as high as third in the polls. He also began his career at New Haven in 1994 as an assistant, and had stints at Northeastern (1999), Cortland State (2000) and Albany (2001–07). Rossomando graduated in 1994 from Boston University, where he was a lineman and helped the Terriers win a Yankee Conference championship and a spot in the I-AA (FCS) playoffs as a senior.
