MoBay stretches 15 miles along the northwestern coast. Jamaica’s second largest city is embraced by turquoise waters, white beaches and an endless variety of restaurants and attractions. Within minutes from the expanding Sir Donald Sangster International Airport, Mo Bay is the major visitor point of entry soon visitors can be checked in, unpacked, and lounging on the beach. Golf, tennis, diving, sightseeing or duty-free shopping, all are nearby. Gloucester Avenue’s “Hip Strip” is the pulse of Montego Bay and boasts restau- rants, nightclubs, bars, duty-free shopping and art galleries. From the “Hip Strip” visitors can walk to Doctors Cave Beach, where the curative powers of the water initiated a flood of tourism in the early 1920s. Today, sun worshippers flock to this stretch of sand. It is the perfect prescription. ACCOMMODATIONS Montego Bay offers superb accommodations – everything from luxurious to bargain. The hot news is that a string of international corporations are making their presence known through resort developments on Jamaica’s north coast. Jamaica’s first luxury golf course community is Palmyra Resort & Spa, luxurious villas and, condominiums on 16 acres in Rose Hall stretching along one-half mile of waterfront property. This condo-hotel features a five-star 42,000 square foot destination spa and condos and villas ranging from US$400,000 to US$5 million. Palmyra is located next to The Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort. Also new to the Rose Hall area is The Iberostar Rose Hall, an oceanfront all-inclusive development with 350 rooms scheduled in the initial phase and expected to open in 2007. Both resorts feature private beaches. Several small hotels straddle the fun of the Hip Strip. Some include Coral Cliff, Doctors Cave Beach Hotel and Wexford Court Hotel. Apartment-type hotels, such as El Greco offer full kitchens and maid service. Villas offer privacy and personal attention from friendly staff, including cooks. Karma Bay is a fabulous high-end villa overlooking Tryall Golf Course. ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES An historical city tour brings MoBay’s tempestuous past to life. Sam Sharpe Square commemorates one of Jamaica’s national heroes. Sam Sharpe was a black slave leading the fight for freedom in the 1831 Christmas Rebellion. He was captured and hanged on the square, which was also the site of the Cage, used as a temporary prison for slaves, drunks and vagrants. Burchell Baptist Church is where Sharpe was a deacon. Nearby, St. James Parish Church displays an old pipe organ and beautiful stained glass windows. The Dome, a brick edifice, faced the river supplying the area with fresh water. Remains of historic Fort Montego sit on a hill overlooking the harbor. Great houses have a history all their own. A tour of the hillside Georgian-style Greenwood Great House (1760), built by a cousin of English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, showcases the family’s library, rare books, oil paintings and priceless antiques. The foreboding 18th century Rose Hall Great House is Jamaica’s grandest. Listen to the chilling story of Annie Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall, who murdered three husbands and a slave lover. Some say her spirit still haunts the house. Remember to tread lightly. The Barnett Estate, once a 50,000-acre At Tryall Golf, Tennis & Beach Resort, west of Montego Bay, golfers tee off at the same championship course played by the pros. Known as the White Witch of Rose Hall, she was believed to have murdered all three of her husbands in the early 19th century, acquiring their wealth in the process. Palmer was also infamous for the way she mistreated her slaves for the slightest infractions. Punishment was in the form of torture and execution. During her murderous reign, Palmer had countless lovers, including many slaves. Eventually she began to practice black magic. She was murdered allegedly by a slave who also practiced black magic. Her abandoned estate fell into ruin and was later restored. To this day, many swear that on some nights she can be seen riding a black horse on the estate. More often there are reports of hurried footsteps, wall tappings, cries from her victims and other ghostly apparitions. The Native, serving fine Jamaican specialties such as the boonoonoonoos platter (a sampler of local dishes) and the Pelican, offering an authentic Jamaican breakfast, are mainstays on the Hip Strip. MoBay features many ethnic specialties. Two fine Chinese restaurants are Guangzhou, on the Hip Strip overlooking the bay, with fare prepared by a Chinese chef, and the elegant Dragon Court, at Fairview Shopping Center, serving dragon fish with sweet and sour sauce. Ming Town is another Chinese Restaurant on the Hip Strip. Hibachi-style Japanese food is found at Sakura, in Half Moon Shopping Village. East Indian fare is served at Akbar. Folkloric shows and theme nights can be found nearly anytime. Venues like the Rum Jungle Café & Bar, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, the chic and jazzy Blue Beat Bar, the Brewery, Sun Daze (formerly Walters Bar & Grill), the Jamaican Bobsled Café, Tino’s, Caribic House and Pier 1 are all good options. To find lady luck, the Rum Jungle Café & Bar is non-stop action with 120 slot machines, from five cents up. Cool off downstairs at Chillin’, a game center and bar, where you better drink fast because the shot glasses are made of ice. Food served 24/7 includes sandwiches, hamburgers and East Indian rotis. Enjoy live music and an original Broadway-style cabaret extravaganza called “Viva Xaymaca” (Tuesday). Revel across the street at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, a continuous party with multiple bars and TVs everywhere. Besides the hoopla, dine on steaks, burgers, pizza and jerk specialties, even jerk chili. Have a sweet tooth? Satisfy it with great creamy Italian ice cream and true Jamaican flavors at Calypso Gelato, on the Hip Strip. Coral Cliff and Margaritaville offer a free hotel shuttle service, which operates between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. FALMOUTH Historically significant Falmouth, about 40 minutes east of Montego Bay, is famous for a fascinating phenomenon that occurs in the water: it glows. Thanks to a large concentration of bioluminescent microorganisms, the small lagoon called Oyster Bay (or Luminous Lagoon) shimmers with an eerie light at night. Take in the town’s well-preserved Georgian architecture at Falmouth Parish Church (1795). Craftsmen sell their wares near the church parking lot. Vendors gather on Wednesday to sell fabrics, clothing and crafts. They gather on Friday and Saturday to sell fruits and vegetables. Nearby are the 1815-era courthouse and the Barrett House, built by sugar baron Edward Barrett. Nature lovers and romantics will enjoy a picturesque landscape while swimming and rafting the nearby Martha Brae River. Many say the river was named after an Arawak (Taino) Indian girl with magical powers. River-Raft Limited offers rafting trips. Good Hope Great House, a working plantation south of Falmouth, has been restored to its original 1755 Georgian splendor.
