Looking forward to Fall
After all the lazy, hot and humid days, we are looking forward to the sensible
weather that Fall will bring. Because of the heat, so many projects have
been left undone, books not read on the beach and many thoughts
swimming around in our heads are still swimming, no nearer to sand or rock.
This was part of a conversation I was having with a friend about what we
had accomplished over the summer. The book she was going to write never
got started and then she got sick. Thankfully she’s getting better but she
said just because the summer is over doesn’t mean that she would abandon
her goals. I began to think about some projects I myself had but put off. I
know writing is hard. Actually, I think I’d rather pull weeds than write. So how
do accomplished authors start their Fall writing after a hot summer? Perhaps
some advice could be applied to any task besides sitting at a desk. Here’s a
few tips.
E.B. White: ―A writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to work will die
without putting a word on paper.‖
Ernest Hemingway: ―I write every morning.‖
Henry Miller:
Work on one thing at a time until finished.
Start no more new books, add no more new material (to your list).
Don’t be nervous. Work calmly, joyously, recklessly on whatever is in hand.
Work according to Program and not according to mood. Stop at the appointed
time!
When you can’t create you can work.
Cement a little every day, rather than add new fertilizers.
Keep human! See people, go places, drink if you feel like it.
Don’t be a draught-horse! Work with pleasure only.
Discard the Program when you feel like it—but go back to it next day.
Concentrate. Narrow down. Exclude.
Forget the books you want to write. Think only of the book you are writing.
Write first and always. Painting, music, friends, cinema, all these come
afterwards.
Jodi Picoult: ―You can’t edit a blank page.‖
Maya Angelou: ―Easy reading is damn hard writing.‖
Barbara Kingsolver: ―I have to write hundreds of pages before I get to page
one.‖
Nathan Englander: ―Turn off your cell phone.‖
Khaled Housseni: ―You have to write whether you feel like it or not.‖
A lot of this sounds a lot like things
my mother used to say. Unfortunately
for me, there are no more weeds to
pull and the hot weather will not be
an excuse.

The Wright Brothers by David McCullough
Chronicles the story-behind-the-story about the Wright brothers, sharing insights
into the disadvantages that challenged their lives and their mechanical ingenuity.
Master historian David McCullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright
Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and more than a
thousand letters to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers’ story, including the
little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well
have gone differently for them.

The Girl On the Train
by Paula Hawkins
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down
the track and stops at the signal that allows her to watch the same couple
breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. ―Jess
and Jason,‖ she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the
life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute
until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to
keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes
entwined in what happens next. Has she done more harm than good?
