Sand-hill Sword-sedge Many indigenous plants on the Mornington Peninsula are not suited to high nutrient conditions. However, there are some that can be used to reduce excessive nutrient levels and are particularly useful where septic tanks or grey water runoff effects natural waterways. Once established, non-woody indigenous plants can be easily cut back to reduce nutrients in the soil. This allows new growth and more rapid nutrient absorption. Cut plant material can be composted. indigenous plants Lepidosperma concavum SIze (h x w) - 1 x 0.7 m Flowering time - most of year Mornington Peninsula Consistently moist to wet soils often drying over summer. C o v e r s Shallow water (to about 10cm deep) around edges. Submergent and/or emergent or floating. Many naturally occurring wetlands dry out over summer. During this time, some wetland plant species die back but then re-grow seasonally in response to rainfall and/or inundation of the wetland. Development of land for housing and farming has seen the loss of many wetlands, both small and large throughout the peninsula. Council asks that all wetlands and associated native vegetation are retained and protected on your land. A permit is required for removal of wetland and other native vegetation. The quality of water can be greatly improved with the addition of indigenous plants in and around the dam. Locally native trees, shrubs and ground covers are best suited to local conditions e.g. climate and soil types. Indigenous plants growing in the wild are distributed across the peninsula according to a range of ecological conditions. In Victoria, native vegetation is mapped and managed in units called Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs). EVCs have a characteristic set of plant species found in them. We can get a good idea of what to plant where by looking at EVC maps, produced by the state government. Mornington Peninsula Shire has been divided into seven planting regions, based largely on the distribution of EVCs. Dimensions given for size represent the typical maximum space that each species may occupy once mature. They are generally much smaller in heathland vegetation.
