INNOVATIVE: Using the Power of Partnership™, we connect strengths, multiply resources, and create the best ways to make measurable improvements in local lives. Community Care Fund TRUSTWORTHY: We are the finest stewards of you donated time, money, and ideas.. LEADERSHIP: We initiate, influence, and support desired positive changes in our neighborhoods and communities. VISION: In our community, everyone has a hopeful future. MISSION: Right here, right now, with the Power of Partnership™, we are improving lives for children, families, seniors, and YOU! 2011-2012 Community Impact Goals In 2009, United Way asked 6,000 local individuals from all backgrounds, 300 businesses and organizations, and hundreds of community leaders to share their hopes and desired goals for the future. This Power of Partnership Initiative (POPI) reached the following unprecedented level of agreement on ten year goals: U N I T E D WAY O F S A N TA B A R B A R A CO U N T Y PA G E 1 UW TYB 2011-2012 June 13_Layout 1 6/13/12 10:40 AM Page 4 United for Literacy: Over the next ten years, together we are going to increase local high school graduation rates and the number of students reading at or above grade level by 50%. Our United for Literacy (UFL) Initiative is a three-part program with a community-based approach to achieving this goal. UFL’s Born Learning, Imagination Library, and Power Reading are the three foundational programs of UFL that work together to engage families in learning and building literacy skills from prenatal age to beyond. Because learning starts from an early age, in Born Learning we sponsor programs like bilingual neighborhood Parent Empowerment Classes or similar programs to help low-income parents increase their knowledge on how to engage in their child’s learning. In Imagination Library, we collaborate with Dolly Parton’s Dollywood Foundation to provide a brand new, age appropriate book in the homes of over 1,200 low-income children every month from infancy to Kindergarten. To date, over 30 youth serving organizations, school, and after-school programs has piloted or implemented a Power Reading tool, Reading Plus, in Santa Barbara County, reaching over 4,000 students. On average students have improved by two or more grade levels in 30 sessions. Students tell us they have more confidence to read and enjoy reading. Teachers tell us this sort of advancement is remarkable. United for Financial Empowerment: Our goal is to increase financial stability among low-income families in Santa Barbara County by 50% over the next ten years. Our Financial Empowerment Partnership (FEP) is comprised of 21 public and private organizations to help us reach that goal. Many of those we meet have never filed a tax return, have nothing put away for their children’s education, and don’t have a bank account. FEP leverages three programs to help these families gain the tools to increase their personal financial stability, this includes Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), Financial Literacy Education, and Access to Affordable Asset building products like retirement accounts, college savings, and emergency savings. These hard working people could be financially devastated by something as small as an unexpected auto repair. United for Health: We’ve been working hard to improve the health of the most vulnerable members of our community- seniors and low-income families. An important part of this effort has been the distribution of prescription drug discount cards to residents of Santa Barbara County. Last year, we brokered a deal to issue prescription discount cards to Santa Barbara County residents and got every local and chain pharmacy in the county to agree to accept the card. For a second year, we worked with over 20 local non-profit agencies to help distribute the discount cards to those that needed them. This year we increase the average savings from 47% to 59% of the regular cost of the drug. Santa Barbara County residents claimed 41,505 claims, a 25% increase from last year with a total savings of $1.3 million, a 66% increase from last year as well. By making sure that county residents have access to their medications we keep chronic conditions from becoming serious, improve the quality of people’s lives and reduce the strain on public assistance and emergency medical services. During the next 10 years, United Way of Santa Barbara County will work to achieve community driven 10-year goals to increase local high school graduation rates and the number of students reading at or above grade level in every grade by 50%. Using a unique three pronged approach United for Literacy (UFL). Each component offers educational programming that is age-appropriate and aligned with school curriculum. Beginning with: Components include: Power Reading Plus Reading Plus is currently being implemented in over 30 schools throughout Santa Barbara County along with several youthserving organizations, after-school programs, adult learning programs as well as our FITS program the past two summers. Last year, students in the program improved by an average of average of two or more grade levels! Reading Plus is flexible and easily accessible from any computer with an internet connection. Its innovative technology provides individualized silent reading lessons allowing the teacher to work with the students at their personal reading rates and vocabulary levels. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Over 800 children are receiving an age appropriate book each month from birth to their fifth birthday. Research has shown that while in middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of ageappropriate books is 13 books per child, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. By providing children with a new book every month, the whole family benefits. Families will read together more frequently when they have books in the home. Every book provides concrete action steps to boost and extend the children's development of vocabulary and preliteracy skills. bornlearning Children are learning constantly, right from birth. What they learn during those first five years depends on the experiences they have each and every day. This is our greatest challenge and our greatest opportunity. bornlearning is built on three cornerstones: awareness, education, and action. Parents and caregivers can use the bilingual tools and opportunities to realize the opportunities available each day to teach their children valuable lessons, without having to change their routine. bornlearning provides education materials that are user-friendly and designed to help parents and caregivers understand how to prepare their children for school. YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY (YLS) provides community involvement, personal development, and network opportunities for young professionals under the age of 40. The founding members had a vision to grow beyond the typical young social group model to truly make a difference in the local community. This is why Young Leaders Society (YLS) adopted United Way’s priorities to help children, families & seniors with a focus on education, income and health. YLS would like to thank the following Partners, Sponsors & Event Speakers: • • • • • • • • • • • • • AMS Entertainment Clark Lammers Fess Parker Doubletree Resort Jeff Vollmer Katherine Stackpoole Santa Barbara Bank & Trust The Harbor Restaurant Union Ale Venoco Inc. Zodo’s Bowling & Beyond Pilgrim Terrace Housing Franklin Elementary School Aliso Elementary School YLS members not only become involved with various United Way and community partnerships like Fun in the Sun and Day of Caring, they also plan and execute their own programs like “United We Read” to help boost literacy skills and the enjoyment of reading in elementary school children and “United We Bowl” to fund such programs. This year # of volunteers read at two local elementary school in Carpinteriad and Santa Barbara positively impacting the lives of over 600 students. Through United Ways network, members also gain the opportunity to meet likeminded civic and business leaders and become acquainted with Santa Barbara's prominent philanthropists during workshops and social events. Although our primary focus is professional development, time is designated for social interaction at every event. In the end, these workshops allow our members to grow as professionals to ultimately become leaders in our community. FITS provides a comprehensive, integrated network of services to disadvantaged children and families, with additional service-learning (FITS-Summer of Service) curriculum for 6th-9th grades and a leadership component (Counselor-in-Training) designed for 10th-12th graders, as well as programming for the entire family. Throughout the eight-hour Lunch Bunch daily, seven week summer session, FITS presents a series of planned educational, artistic, relational, and recreational activities to strengthen skills that would otherwise languish during the summertime. Through these activities, FITS strengthens learning skills and gives children the sense of connectedness, the life skills, and the self-respect they need to produce long-term behavioral and academic improvements. In 2011, FITS was recognized for the 2nd consecutive year as a Finalist for the national Award of Excellence in Summer Learning Programs by the National Summer Learning Association. • City of Santa Maria Parks & Rec. On Saturday, September 17, 2011 United Way of Santa Barbara County held the 20th Annual Day of Caring volunteer event to kick-off its Community Campaign that raises pledges to support and achieve the community driven 10 year goals. At 8 a.m. volunteers gathered at the Ben Page Youth Center and enjoyed a breakfast, which was generously donated by Albertson’s. From 9a.m. to 1p.m. volunteers helped local non-profit agencies with “hands-on” work assignments. Over 1,600 volunteers participated, including young people from local schools, families, churches, community service groups and workplaces at over 64 sites across the Tri-counties. Some of the largest sites included Bohnett Park, Adams Elementary School, Dos Pueblos High School (Goleta Valley Beautiful) and Alpha Resource Center. Projects varied between landscape work, planting, painting, habitat restoration and office work throughout Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Ynez. The work that was done in just four hours equals to more than $275,000 worth of improvements to the Santa Barbara Community. Please send photo for this space here. Thanks. Red Feather Ball The 15th Annual Red Feather Ball was voted one of the best ever attended by long term supporters and gala attendees. Guests walked into a breathtaking rainforest to the music of Art Deco & His Society Orchestra. The band also started off the evening with a musical tribute accompanied by a slide show of the lives of Eric Boehm, 92 and Mario F. Borgatello, 93. These patriarchs started businesses that have employed thousands of local people, do business with dozens of local professionals and vendors, and are successfully run by second and third generation family members who are committed to giving back to the community and education in so many ways. The dance floor was a filled with dancers elbow to elbow enjoying the sweet tunes through out and after dinner. Debby Davison Phelps and Andrew Firestone added grace, humor and results to the program and auction. The evening culminated in the presentation to the 2011 recipients of the Abercrombie Community Excellence Award to Eric, Ron & Marlys Boehm and ABC-CLIO by 2010 honoree, John Wigle – President & CEO of AGIA Insurance Services and Mario & David Borgatello and MarBorg Industries by 2009, honoree Dr. Peter MacDougall. These two families and their companies epitomize caring, sharing and doing for decades upon decades in our community. It was also a significant financial success thanks to the many individual and corporate sponsors and to three Anonymous donors that either invested significantly in the United for Literacy programs and/or matched all dollars pledged totaling our largest ever Scholarship auction at $91,000 pushing over all results to $270,000 to expand our United for Literacy programs.
