Volume 6, Issue 3 March 2012 Event Calendar March Corvette Club Santa Barbara MEMORIAL : RICHARD STEEL It’s a small world after all. We all know how the Corvette attracts a fan base that encompasses owners from all manner of backgrounds from every corner of the earth. So it is really not surprising that some members, who had ties from a former time in their lives, would find the Corvette the common denominator that brings them together in one more facet of their lives. I found that to be the case when I sent out the notice about the loss of our member, Richard Steel. It seems that Richard and CCSB fellow member John Barletta shared some memorable history together. John sent me this reply on the loss of Richard, “We came from the same town in Massachusetts and served in the same U.S. Army outfit, the 1st Calvary Division in Vietnam. I love the photo in the redwoods with him wearing the 1st Cav. Hat that I gave him. God Bless.” I found this to be such a fitting tribute to the man who was Richard Steel. As with many who have served our country, he did wear that hat proudly that John gave him as a reminder of his service to our country and the friendship with John. Whenever Richard and Kim joined us for any Corvette events or runs, I was always touched by Richard’s ability to make the best time he could of the time that he and Kim spent with us. I am sure that his health concerns might have kept some from participating in life. However Richard never complained and always had a smile on his face. He was always ready for the next adventure. You could see it in his eyes when he looked at her that he absolutely adored Kim. We had the pleasure of going on a CCSB multi-day run to the redwoods with Richard and Kim a few years ago. My favorite memory of that trip was seeing them walking hand in hand in the redwoods, snapping pictures of each other and having a great time. Both of our Corvettes are staying in the garage out of harm’s way from the wrath of blustery mother nature today. Speaking of mother nature, on March 17 Fred and Anne Lopez are leading a run to the Antelope Valley Poppy Fields. In spring this area is one of mother nature’s finer works of art. The poppies and other wild flowers go on for miles. There are several easy walking trails through the area and photo opportunities for capturing “Mother Nature Gone Wild”. Speaking of going wild, on March 10 Thore Edgren will be hosting a “Winos Gone Wild” Pinot Noir tasting at his home. I know I don’t have to promote a wine tasting event to our club members, but nevertheless I do appreciate Thore stepping up to host this event. It is nice to see more participation from a variety of club members hosting events. Speaking of participation, we have two board positions that will need to be filled for the new club year which are president and activities director. These both are very important positions in the club and I am looking for members to step forward to fill these vacancies. All other board members have agreed to continue for another year. That does not mean that if you have an interest in running for one of the other board positions that we would not welcome your interest. However I will be contacting the membership to seek out members to fill the president and activities director board positions. No one signed up to be on the nominating committee at the last meeting. If you can help us by being on this committee, please contact me. We are thrilled to welcome Graham Chevrolet and Cadillac back for 2012 as our Primary Sponsor and are looking forward to the Corvette Gathering June 9th at the dealership. We will be joined by the Simi Valley Corvette Club and hopefully the newly formed Santa Barbara Classic Camaro Club. Thank you to Bob Stallings for coordinating our part of the upcoming event. Remember “without “u” there is no club”. MEMORIAL : RICHARD STEEL continued from front page One of Richard’s last events with members of CCSB was when he volunteered to drive a member of the Santa Barbara High School homecoming court around the field in his convertible at halftime. He was a champion on the field that night. The weather was not good, but he did what I am sure he did his whole life, he kept his commitment, showed up, braved the elements, and fulfilled the mission that he had been assigned. So although we will miss Richard we can be assured that he did make a difference in this world and his participation in life was full throttle right until the end. Page 3 Volume 6, Issue 3 Corvette Club Santa Barbara Activities Column Fred & Anne Lopez We have a number of great events coming up in the near future. Page 5 WE ARE ON THE WEB www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com ZIPLINE CANOPY TOURS Volume 6 Issue 3 Jacques Bellesiles “This should be on everyone’s bucket list” Steve Petersen On Saturday February 18th Fred Lopez, Roger and Keiko Dunham ,Steve and Linda Petersen, Dennis and Lynne Merenbach, Shelli Locklear, Sandy Rubel, Alan Emslie, Pat Bloom, Jim Purcell, Roger Hoyt, Darlene Amundson, Yuriko Bellesiles and me went on thrill ride we will never forget.. Yuri and I had no idea what we were signing up for.. Most of the group had never even heard of a zipline.. A couple of guys at the gym said, “you’re going to do that? I’ve seen movies and it really looks scary.”. I found out that there are a few ziplines in the United States, but they are mostly new, and that’s why we’ve never heard the word.. So – we had a leisurely drive up 101 and got off at Santa Margarita and went to a park and had a picnic lunch. A really nice, different idea. It was fun. We then drove to Margarita Adventures office, got in a van and made a tour of the enormous 12,000 acre ranch. It really was a nature study as we toured a cattle ranch, hundreds of acres of wine grapes, and a beautiful forest primeval that has never been touched. One tidbit I remember – the land under the grape vineyard is loaded with enormous oyster shells that are somewhere between five and ten thousand years old. This caused a very high protein content in the soil that makes for very unusual and interesting wine grapes. We ended up on a platform on a mountaintop. And there’s a cable stretching out 1300 feet over a valley a couple of hundred of feet below. You hook a harness up to this cable and step off into space and glide across the chasm at about 35 MPH. I don’t care who you are – that first step takes your breath away. About half way through the ride, you begin to realize “hey this is fun”, and the rest is easy. Yuriko is terrified of roller coasters and she was afraid she was going to have a heart attack. There are four separate cable rides. On the last two rides she was waving her arms and legs around and laughing manically. I think there was generally an agreement that this was one of the wildest things any of us had ever done, and we loved it. After the rides, we went back to the Margarita winery for tasting. They were mobbed. Two wine groups had shown up unexpectedly. Management set up a special table for us, and served large servings of some very nice wine. It turned out to be very friendly with interesting conversations with the other groups.. Our group then went to dinner at Steamers restaurant in Pismo Beach. Everybody enjoyed their meals and there was lavish praise for the clam chowder and the organic salads. Jim Purcell This was a wonderful unforgettable day thanks to Fred Lopez’s planning and imagination. From now on, if Fred is planning a run, I don’t need to know what it is or where it’s going. Just sign us Photos courtesy of Fred Lopez Page 6 WE ARE ON THE WEB www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com Daytona 500 Party Volume 6 Issue 3 Sandy & Hib Halverson It Wasn't Daytona but it WAS a Party It's called the "Occasional" Daytona Party because it's not held every year. This year it was supposed to be our "8th Occasional Daytona Party" but, it got rained out. Oh–there was no rain in Goleta last Sunday–not a freakin' cloud in the sky. The problem was in central Florida. In the last 53 years, the Daytona 500 has never been rained out–it's been cut short four times, but last Sunday was the first time the Great American Race had ever been called. They tried to get the race in, but the weather at Daytona Beach was just sopping wet most of the day. When it go so late that NASCAR knew, even if the rain stopped right then, they'd never get the track dry; they called the race and rescheduled it for Monday morning. So, we just had a Sunday afternoon "Party". There were 16 of us and we drank several big pots of coffee, ate donuts from the new Spudnuts in Goleta along with other pot luck snacks folks brought. Add to that Sandy's mimosas, a boat load of chips, dips and M&Ms and everyone had a great time. For a long time we watched live coverage of the rain delay, but when Fox went to a rerun of "Everyone loves Raymond", we knew the "racing goose" was cooked. Heck–Who needs racing? "Pass the mimosas and a handful of chips, please. Oh, gimme one of those big cinnamon rolls, too. I'll start my diet next week." Sandy assembled another great list of NASCAR trivia questions. Hib read them and Sandy awarded the prizes. Judy Purcell won wine in a glass. Mike Christeson won a Tony Stewart Calendar. Fred Markley? For the second time in as many years, he won toilet paper. He said it was the perfect prize because he'd nearly run out of the TP he won the year before...don't ask. Markley, also, won the big door prize of the day: a case of Fireman's beer, beer chips, a redneck wine glass and a classic Sam Bass Dale Earnhardt print from the early-'90s. Sandy's and Hib's Sunday Party ended with Hib BBQ'ing burgers hot dogs for all. While the weather in Daytona was crap, it was beautiful in Goleta and warm enough for some to sit outside on Sandy's patio and eat lunch. Oh...the race? Well, those who watched on Monday night know what happened. If you didn't? Well, you missed one of the strangest 500 mile superspeedway races in NASCAR history. First, with Florida still having bad weather, the race was postponed multiple times until it finally went off about 7 PM eastern time. On the second lap there was a big pile-up precipitated by five-time Champion Jimmie Johnson. The 48 went around then smacked the wall hard taking out Danica Patrick's #10 Go Daddy Chevrolet and five other cars. Ms. Patrick returned to the race after a long repair session in the garages to finish 38th, 60-laps down. Lap 2 was only the beginning of trouble for the other Hendrick cars. Later the 24 (Jeff Gordon) suffered a rare engine failure. Kasey Kahne (#5 Farmer's Insurance Chevy) was caught up in a wreck near the end. Only Jr., in the 88, was still running at the end. Page 7 WE ARE ON THE WEB www.corvetteclubsantabarbara.com Daytona 500 Party Volume 6 Issue 3 Sandy & Hib Halverson About 3/4s through the race, with the track under caution, Juan Pablo Montoya was running down the backstretch when he had either a transmission or rear axle failure which locked up the rear tires and spun him. Directly in the path of the skidding 42 was a jet drier truck and he hit it dead-center in the rear...where the jet engine's 200 gallon fuel tank is. That started a huge fire. Montoya climbed out of his smoking wreck uninjured. The jet dryer driver had minor injuries and went to the hospital. Extinguishing the fire, then cleaning up the mess and verifying the track was still safe to race on took more than two hours. After the long red flag period, the race restarted and ran several laps under caution. It went green with about 30 laps to go. With two laps to go there was another big wreck and a caution which brought on NASCAR's "green-white-checker" overtime rule. The finish was the stuff Daytona is famous for. On the green flag lap, in a tight, three-car draft, was Matt Kenseth in the #17 Best Buy Ford, Greg Biffle in the #16 3M Ford and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Diet Mountain Dew Chevrolet. They stayed like that until the last lap and the exit of the last turn when Jr. made his move and passed Biffle. Problem was, the 88 just didn't have the stuff for Kenseth's Roush-Fenway Ford. The margin of victory was two-tenths of a second. It was Matt Kenseth's second Daytona win and Dale Jr.'s sixth Daytona runner-up. All this took place just about AM Tuesday morning, Florida time. (yawn) Photos courtesy of Inge Stallings Winos Gone Wild – Battle Pinot Noir Tony & Paula Megowan Once again we will participate in the old tyme tradition of eating, drinking, and being merry. On the 10 th of March at 2:00 pm (that’s 1400 for you military types) we will meet at Thore Edgren’s happy home under the Wisteria to taste the wonderful red concoction we call Pinot Noir. Each couple (or individual) will bring a bottle of Pinot Noir wine valued at $20-$30. Bring the wine unlabeled in a plain brown paper sack. The wine can be one you’ve never had before or one that you drink on a regular basis - it’s up to you. The bags will then be numbered and we will blind taste them one at a time. Since you don’t know which wine you’re tasting, you will be judging the wine strictly on its taste without any preconceived ideas about the winery. Once all the wines have been tasted, we will unveil the bottles and see which ones are the favorites. We are requesting each person bring their own wine glass to use for the afternoon so that the host isn’t left with a bunch of wine glasses to wash. We will also be serving light appetizers (cheese, crackers, etc.) along with pizza, salad and dessert. The cost will be $7.00 per person. If you have not already signed up and wish to join us let me know by Wednesday evening. You can email me at [email protected] or call me at 805-659-5056. Page 8 Volume 6, Issue 3 Corvette Club Santa Barbara Santa Paula Airport Jim Purcell Be sure to join us on Sunday April 1st for a fascinating tour of the Aviation Museum at the Santa Paula Airport. The chain of many privately owned hangars at the Santa Paula airport house a variety of vintage aircraft and unique collections of various types. Memorabilia from antique radios to racecars are just a few of the treasures to be found. Some hangars celebrate highlights of fascinating aviation careers while others contain antique aircraft undergoing restoration. Several hangars also have beautiful vintage cars on display while many aircraft owners put their antique aircraft on static display. Vintage aircraft routinely fly in for this event. Hangar owners and docents are more than happy to answer questions, and admission is Free! Privacy Reminder Old Club Rosters should be shredded not just thrown in the trash when replaced. Maps will be provided to assist in navigating the museum and airport complex. You will be able to leisurely visit the various hangars in any order you wish by strolling from hangar to hangar, or catching a ride on the tram if your feet get tired. The museum is open from 10:00am to 3:00pm so we’ll have plenty of time to savor the many unique exhibits and collections. We will also be having a Santa Maria style BBQ on site in a private banquet room at Logsdon’s restaurant. You’ll have your choice of Tri-Tip, BBQ chicken or ribs along with macaroni salad, chili beans and French bread. The price will be $15 which includes tax and tip. What a deal!! We will gather at 9:00am sharp in the Carpinteria City Hall parking lot on Carpinteria Avenue located half way between the Casitas Pass Road exit and Bailard Avenue exit on Highway 101. Our trek to Santa Paula will take us along beautiful back roads past Lake Casitas and through the scenic Ojai valley. Special arrangements have been made at the airport for us to conveniently park our Corvettes in a designated area near the hangars.
