C.A.M.P. Wellness Valley Community Clinic Salutes our Corporate Partners (VCC’s Comprehensive Adolescent Medicine Program) *Sam is 14 years old; his mother brought him to VCC’s Adolescent Specialist because his hair was falling out. The doctor ruled out a physical cause and said hair loss is often emotional. She tried to refer Sam directly to the social worker, but one was not on duty at the time. Although the social worker called the following day, Sam’s mom didn’t want Sam to see the therapist, since he was ‘not sick.’ We know better. The C.A.M.P. Wellness doctor created a healthful diet & exercise plan. That was easy. The hard part is getting him to follow it. Joe needs additional help and support to stay on his new regime and to address its cause, but the social work team is so limited that it must focus on crisis. *Jamie is fifteen. Her mother brings her to C.A.M.P. Wellness because she is always tired. The doctor checks her out; Jamie seems physically fine, but her Q9 score1 was over 9, and the doctor is concerned. The doctor steps down the hall to the social worker, test results in hand, to discuss her concerns. Together the clinicians return to the exam room to speak with Jamie and her mother. This is the vital “Warm Handoff” and is critical in avoiding the stigma or negative perception of therapy. Together the doctor and therapist create an environment of comfort and trust in which to begin necessary (sometimes urgent) treatment. It ensures that the patient will begin treatment and greatly increases the chance the patient will return to complete therapeutic care, as Jamie has done. If only the doctor had been able to complete a “Warm Handoff” like this for Sam at the time of his medical visit, he might have obtained the help he needed. 1Teen depression screen tool. *Names and pictures changed to protect patient identity. “80% of all teen medical issues are psychologically based.” Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration “There are so many negative influences affecting our teens today, parents can’t do it all. C.A.M.P.’s combination of physical and mental health is such an incredible help.” Regina Zeinali, mother of a 13 year-old girl. Please support mental health services for teens and VCC’s C.A.M.P. Wellness. Silent Auction Announcement February 15th – 28th In honor of the 84th ACADEMY AWARDS, Valley Community Clinic presents HOORAY for HOLLYWOOD! - VCC’s first ever Stand Alone Silent Auction - Bid on Celebrity items, celebrity created Art - With just a little (Kevin) Love thrown in! Link: www.biddingforgood.com/ValleyClinic 1 Message from Paula Wilson, CEO It’s 2012 and Valley Community Clinic hit the ground running! We are planning to “go live” in mid-March of this year with the main phase of our Electronic Medical Records system. Even as I write this, our clinicians are learning to use their new little iPad-like personal records systems. This has been a 2-year project for us and we look forward to its completion and the excitement of actual use. We are continuing our ramp up to see thousands of new patients under a new Los Angeles County program, Healthy Way LA. After a slow start, our numbers are increasing quickly. Our main holdups? Recruiting more doctors and LCSW’s (Licensed Clinical Social Workers). Recruitment of good medical professionals remains a challenge for us, since it is hard for VCC to compete when it comes to salaries and wages. Even with all this excitement happening at this moment, we must continue our plans for the future. 2014 is now so much closer. What will the Affordable Care Act (Health Reform) bring? How can we prepare? These remain questions with still too few answers, but we are trying. In fact, the aforementioned Healthy Way LA program is actually federally funded “bridge money” to reach out and capture those folks who will newly qualify under ACA’s current parameters. In addition to ACA, we are preparing to begin operations of a new clinic site on the campus of Monroe High School, which is slated to open in 2014. It seems a long way off, but the amount of work involved in opening a 15,000 square foot community health center from scratch is overwhelming and all consuming. It’s still too early to tell what other exciting possibilities are in store for Valley Community Clinic in 2012. But I have no doubt that new opportunities and new challenges will come along. I have no doubt that the incredible staff and board of this phenomenal agency will be able to meet any challenges that come along. We always have. I know we always will. Valley Community Clinic has been here for our community for over 40 years. I predict at least another 40 years–2052 here we come! Paula Wilson, President/CEO Welcome Aboard to Greg Martinez-Miller Liz Milan is Thankful For VCC Greg has been Vice President and Commercial Banking Relationship Manager at Wells Fargo in Woodland Hills for 5 years. Prior to that he was Operations Manager at the California Banquet Corporation. “Valley Community Clinic has been a lifesaver to me! A friend told me about the clinic when I had a dental emergency and could not afford to see my usual dentist. Like many people, I’ve always been apprehensive about going to the dentist, and was even less enthusiastic about making an appointment with a dentist I knew nothing about. I was pleasantly surprised when I met Dr. Shawn Summers at the clinic! Everyone was friendly and helped put me at ease. Dr. Summers took the time to make a thorough assessment, and the quality of his work was impressive. He also offered me options that my previous dentist had never mentioned. Greg grew up in South Pasadena. He got his degree in Business Administration at USC’s Marshall School of Business. In his free time Greg enjoys golf and traveling. Greg is married to Rebekkah Martinez-Miller, who is an RN, cementing his interest in healthcare for our community. Greg and Rebekkah are the proud parents of a two year old girl and a brand new baby boy. “I am thrilled to have an opportunity to contribute in to the success of the Valley Community Clinic and proud to join an organization that is working to provide for the health and well being of community members in need.” Since then, I’ve also had the opportunity to visit the clinic’s general medicine section. What I’ve found here is that the staff is courteous and efficient, and the doctors are all very competent, caring and considerate. Visits are never hurried, and all options are explored and discussed. I’m really amazed at the level of care provided – it’s made a big difference in my life! I’m very grateful to the clinic for being there for me and 17,000 other people!” Better than Chocolate Chip Cookies... Because VCC’s Dental Department is so dedicated... to improving oral health in the uninsured community, and because it receives no funding stream to support our dental services, it has been selected by *‘Henry Schein Cares’ as a recipient of 2 years of dental supplies. What a wonderful end-ofyear gift, lifting some of the worry about where their much-needed supplies are *Henry Schein Inc. is one of the nation’s largest suppliers of medical and dental supplies. Through “Henry Schein Cares”, the Company gives back to healthcare markets and communities which includes extensive offerings of medical, and dental products. coming from in the months ahead. On behalf of our patients, we thank ‘Henry Schein Cares’ from the bottom of our hearts for their generous dental donation. Pharmacy Staff Mention: Our valiant Pharmacy Staff are very special... so much so that our own Dr. Erwin Feldman made a recent generous donation to VCC in honor of all the vital work they do. We wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Feldman and here they are (l-r) Mary Smith, Johanna Venegas, Juana Davila, RN and Tito Lucerro, RN with our appreciation for all that you do for the Clinic and the patients we serve. **You too can join Dr. Feldman and donate a gift in honor of all their hard work. There’s nothing like donated dental goodies to put a big smile on the face of Dr. Shawn Summers, DDS! 2 New Staff VCC Welcomes Mary Pickney, RN – Nurse Manager Mary Pickney, RN joined Valley Community Clinic’s staff as Nurse Manager in December. But before that, Mary and VCC were already working together. Mary was the “attending supervisor” for Kaplan College’s LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) program, which uses VCC as an intern training site. Both VCC and Mary recognize a good thing when they see it, and when we asked Mary to join our staff officially, she accepted. Previously, Mary was an adjunct professor at Holy Names University in Oakland and for eight years worked at Northridge Hospital, both as a Pediatric RN, and as a Project Manager in their Children’s Services Unit. She also worked at Kaiser Permanente (Sunset), but really began her nursing career nearby at Valley Presbyterian Hospital. Mary started her nursing studies at Pierce College, then went on to California State University, Los Angeles, California, where she obtained both her BSN and MSN in Nursing Education. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau (International Honor Society of Nursing) and the Organization of Healthcare Educators (OHE). When asked why she made the move to Valley Community Clinic, Mary stated: “It’s the patients. There is such need, and I really wanted to be a part of something that was giving so much back to the community.” Dr. Shahab Banayan Originally from Iran, Dr. Banayan came to the United States with his family in 1985 to escape the political upheavals of the time. He joins the VCC staff as a Family Practitioner with his Medical Degree from Ross University in the Commonwealth of Dominica. His background includes a year of general surgery, a two-year cardiothoracic residency at King-Harbor Hospital, Los Angeles, completed at Kingston Hospital, New York, plus an Obstetric Fellowship. Before joining VCC in December 2011, he worked for a variety of private I.P.A. clinics, where he was discouraged by the constant emphasis on profits over real patient needs. Receiving little professional satisfaction from working in such an environment, he jumped at the opportunity to work in the non-profit field. Although his salary may be less than in private medicine, he finds it more than compensated by the friendliness and cooperation of VCC’s staff, together with the lack of constant obstacles previously impeding his efforts at providing appropriate care. A happy doctor is also without doubt an added benefit to his patient! CODE WHITE – PATIENT IN TROUBLE small boy. It took some time, but Valley Community Clinic’s impromptu triage team were able to wrap little Jacob’s injury and stabilize him and his mother sufficiently to arrange for them to go Valley Presbyterian Hospital’s ER for stitches and any additional needs. Dr. Watkins followed up with Mrs. Henderson several days later, and Jacob was doing just fine. “Maya Henderson” was screaming as she raced through Valley Community Clinic’s lobby with her hysterical 18-month old son in her arms, a trail of blood following in her footsteps. Little “Jacob” had been playing near his grandfather’s tools. One had fallen and sliced open his leg. The Henderson’s live a block from the Clinic, and Maya simply picked up her son and ran to us. As soon as she entered the lobby, one of VCC’s staff ran to the PA system and called a CODE WHITE – PATIENT IN TROUBLE. Within 1 minute Pediatrican Chawn Watkins, CMO Roger Peeks, and Nurse Manager Mary Pickney, were with the Henderson’s, each with a job to do. Dr. Watkins immediately took little Jacob and applied pressure to his wound. Nurse Pickney took Mrs. Henderson aside to calm her and to get all the necessary information on the accident and on little Jacob. While Dr. Watkins attended to the baby’s actual injury, Dr. Peeks did a full medical assessment, including temperature and blood pressure-no easy task with a squirming, screaming When you think of a community clinic, you may not think about real-time emergencies, but our patients and our neighbors race into our offices just the same, dashing to the doctors and the care they know and trust. At Valley Community Clinic our patient’s emergency is our emergency. KAISER PERMANENTE PANORAMA CITY CHANGES LIVES OF VCC PATIENTS WITH FREE SURGERIES More than fifty Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center physicians and staff volunteered their time on a Saturday to provide hernia surgeries to uninsured patients in the San Fernando Valley in partnership with nonprofit Valley Community Clinic (VCC). “Kaiser Permanente has a social mission to improve the health of the communities in which we live and work”, explains Dennis Benton, Panorama City Hospital Executive Director. “These surgeries were made possible thanks to our many volunteers including Kaiser Permanente surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, operating room technicians, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, and administrative staff,” adds Benton. VCC’s patients all have incomes at or below 300% of the Kaiser Permanente’s Medical Staff volunteers. federal poverty guidelines. They do not qualify for existing public health assistance, and cannot afford private health insurance. They are the working poor. Having the pain and discomfort associated with these health issues prevented some from working to their full capacity and others from being able to work at all. “Valley Community Clinic and our patients are excited and thankful to Kaiser Permanente Panorama City for its Community Surgery Day. These surgeries improve the quality of our patient's lives, and the lives of their families,” says Dr. Roger Peeks, MD, Medical Director, Valley Community Clinic. 3 Dr. Roger Peeks, MD A LOOK BACK AT OUR FABULOUS Founding members Barbara Breger & Ira Freeman.
