Apprenticeship is a form of post-secondary education like university or college…but there is MORE! Apprenticeship is an option that combines onthe-job training with technical training to become a highly skilled tradesperson Apprentices not only learn skills in a classroom, they receive paid on-the-job training with an employer. If you say “Yes”, consider taking an apprenticeship and become a tradesperson! Apprenticeship Training Apprentices spend 40-44 weeks a year on the job and go to school 6-8 weeks. An apprenticeship takes 2-5 years to complete. Apprentices earn a salary on the job from the first day of employment. Apprentices receive a Certificate of Qualification in a designated trade after writing a final exam. Click on ‘Program Website’ to find out more information about the specific program. Based on 6 grade 12 U or M level courses Prerequisite courses are included Some programs have minimum marks for certain subjects i.e. 70%-75% in ENG4U or MHF4U Every university calculates averages differently Repeated courses may be treated differently Conditional offers will state averages that you must maintain Collaborative University & College Programs Collaborative programs offer the combination of hands-on learning and theoretical approach. Students may earn either one or two credentials — one from the college and/or one from the university. Admission requirements are the same as universities (Based on 6 grade 12 U or M level courses) Check to see which application centre to apply to for these programs (OUAC, OCAS or both) University Application Application Tutorials Application Tutorial – OUAC 101 Online Application Tutorial for Reviewing and Changing a submitted application The first page of the OUAC application can be used to browse programs without logging in. After clicking on the login button on page 1 then you must enter 3 pieces of information: School Number Student Number PIN You will receive this information at the end of November or beginning of December. Prepare your application working from left to right Click to add programs to your application Browse programs using these search options Choose one of the universities to view the programs that are available. Each program has a code. • Write down the code of the programs you are interested in. • Click on the program you want to add to your application. 1. Check program admission requirement 2. Fill in required information 3. Click on “Add Program” Step 3 – Fill in Personal Information Step 2 – Order Program Choices Final Step – Press Submit • Review and print the application information • Pay application fee • An OUAC reference number is assigned immediately – record this number • Check email for confirmation message $150 for 3 program choices (All fees are nonrefundable) For each university/program choice in addition to your initial three, it will cost $50 per choice (All payments must be in Canadian Funds) Maximum of three program choices at any one university Payment methods include credit card and online banking. Check your OUAC account and email regularly; this is how the universities will communicate with you. Thinking about College Programs College programs combine academic and practical/technical skills training with employment preparation in some of the following areas: Applied Arts, Business, Health and Human Services and Technology May be a transition pathway: General Arts and Science Program for two years and then transfer to university (check transfer agreements) May be a “Pre” program Two or three years in special career related area Will usually require: Grade 12 English Graduation from high school Senior level courses Some programs may require specific courses such as: Biology, Chemistry, Technical Math, grade 11 or 12 Math Possible additional requirements may include an interview, supplementary application, portfolio, tests Specific prerequisite courses (e.g. ENG4C/U) at specific levels May prefer a good grade in College English and Math courses instead of a mediocre grade in the University level Based on all Grade 11 and 12 marks including Co-op Check college application information brochures and websites to find out more 4 years of academic study blending theory and practical experiences small classes mean comfortable learning environment career focused, developed in consultation with employers co-op experience provides real-life opportunities You need to have 6 grade 12 U and/or M courses to apply but cut off marks may not be as high as University (e.g. 65% average) Find a Program Application Tutorial Highly Competitive Programs Areas of Study Chart Tutorial to help Find Programs and College Application Procedure Keyword Search Search by College Refine Search Enter a keyword and click “Search” Program Title OR College Name Name of the college Campus where the program is offered Program status: OPEN programs are still accepting applications When the program starts Click “Visit” to link to specific program information on the college website Create an account by selecting a username and password. Write down your username and password. (Keep your password in a safe place.) Create Challenge questions: select from the pull-down list, or create your own. An account activation email will be sent to the email address you entered when you created your account. Click the link in the email to activate your account. Click the link to access the login screen. Login using the username and password created during account sign up. • February 1 is the earliest date colleges may accept students. • Offers of admission will continue to be sent out until programs are full or waitlisted • Check your OCAS account and email regularly; this is how the colleges will communicate with you. $95 for 5 program choices only (no more than 3 program choices at one college) How to Pay Your Application Fees Pay online using a credit card. Pay directly from your bank account with online banking. Mail - by money order or certified cheque. Made out to ontariocolleges.ca and should clearly indicate your application number ◘ A written application some university programs require in addition to your OUAC application ◘ Important for both admission and scholarship consideration. ◘ Failure to submit this form may jeopardize the consideration of your application. ◘ Read everything carefully! ◘ Optional? – You really should submit it! ◘ Deadlines are firm ◘ Make a professional email address. Click on Tuition and Fees in order to find out the cost of specific university programs ◘ If you are planning to graduate at the end of June your community hour forms need to be handed in by June 6, 2016. ◘ If the volunteer hours are not completed you will not receive a diploma January 13, 2016 – Last day to apply online February 5, 2016 - Recommended last date for students to make changes as well as adding new program choices May 27, 2016 – The latest date applicants can expect a response from an Ontario university. June 1, 2016 – Earliest date that Ontario universities may require a response to an offer of admission and a financial commitment of any kind.
