This is a region of contrasts. You cannot separate one from the other. They form part of a larger picture which has been an inspiration for centuries: the Salzkammergut. Sometimes know as the “tenth province of Austria“, its range of diversity in such a relatively small area is unique. The Salzkammergut covers 67 crystal-clear lakes and various mountain ranges. The region has been blessed with enchanting landscapes, delightful valleys, and interesting people. Although it may be geographically small it has a lot to offer. Searching out its many distinctive features may be impossible in one life-time, but it‘s worth trying. To help you on this quest we have gathered together a host of tips and stories. Also included are recipes for you to try out, and a collection of the most popular events. Read about wild artisans, via ferrata, and hiking with diving goggles; about operettas and the creation of a Narzissenfest figure; about lakes, experiences, beautiful places, Advent markets, ski slopes, cross-country trails, and a village magistrate; and of course, about the Emperor, and “the spice of life“ that has bound this region together for thousands of years. An idyllic bathing spot for families, a relaxing place for anglers, and a retreat for Otto Schenk. A sparkling lake, situated in the north west of the sanctuary. The Kolomansberg rises majestically to the Salzkammergut, is part of a chain of lakes. But the water is not salty, quite the opposite - you can drink it. Lie on the pebble beach in Gössl, which sits on the narrow eastern shore of Lake Grundlsee, and with eyes half closed look across the lake: you will see the illusion of an infinite horizon. It looks almost like the sea. The sound of the waves gently rippling, the small container ship going by (a small steamer named Rudolf or Traun), the icecream man says “Griaß Di“ instead of “Ciao“ and - then when you open your eyes fully again - the horizon is narrowed by mountains. The green and grey peaks of the Tote Gebirge surround Lake Grundlsee in the Salzkammergut-Ausseerland. With names like Ressen and Zlaimkogel, Backenstein, Siniweller or Gössler Wand, this is definitely Austria and not Italy. 4.22 square kilometres of water make Lake Grundlsee the largest lake in Styria: the Styrian Sea. Eight kilometres of the shoreline are undeveloped and freely accessible. A great place to swim. Jump into the water (usually about 20 °). Swim, splash around, dive down. And if you get thirsty - drink! As well as having its own tributaries, Lake Grundlsee is also fed by melt water in the spring and has drinking water quality. Rothschädl‘s Enkel (grandson): that‘s Felix Putz. Felix is stove, returning to wood rather than using gas and oil, says from the oven building family Putz-Rothschädl (a well Putz. They‘ve fascinated me since I was a child“. Starting out as a stone mason and tiler in Hallein, he completed his military service and then started his apprenticeship in Mondsee at 19. “I didn‘t want to train at home and be the ‚son of the boss‘.“ So Mondsee was where he achieved his master qualification from the Kachelofen association. After working in the family business for a year and a half, he then decided to go it alone - as Rothschädl‘s Enkel. Quality is important to him. As well as oven building he also lays Felix Putz Oven Builder tiles and creates patios. An oven to last a lifetime Whether it‘s for cooking, for heating, as storage heaters, or an extra boost for central heating between the seasons Rothschädls Enkel builds ovens and stoves according to individual wishes. Behind every figure is a creative mind. Stefan Pucher has one of those minds and gives an insight into how an idea is transformed into a narcissus figure. “We must have the idea in place by Easter at the latest.“ Stefan Pucher is a goldsmith. For the last 20 years he and his sister‘s family have taken part in nearly every Narcissus Festival. They are team: Freller/ Pucher from Altaussee. In 2014 the team created a ten-metre-long lucky dragon based on a design by the artist André Heller for the Vienna Life Ball. In 2012 it was a Frog King. And before that? A hippopotamus, a turtle, a pig, a crown. The list goes on. “We are the hard core“ says Pucher.
