Forged Animal Heads
with Bill Epps
In this video the viewer learns the steps in creating several novelty animal heads
out of square stock and a novelty horse out of a horseshoe. Epps includes ideas
on applications, tips on technique, including a discussion of the molecular structure of steel and why a smith makes his steel square, then round, and how to use
a cross-peen hammer correctly. Forge-welding can be clearly seen in the making
of one of the pieces, and Epps gives tips on how to create a good forge weld.

Making Tongs

Leaves and Flowers

Demonstrated are 5 leaves and 5 flowers, including several ways of cutting
veins into a leaf, folding and shaping the leaf form, and specific blossoms such
as a rose, a morning glory, a dogwood blossom and a calla lily. Epps shows
how to achieve surface texturing on leaves and petals and discusses the merits of giving just the inference of a specific species, rather than trying for exact replication. The use of the guillotine tool, or top/bottom fuller, is shown.

manufacturer of every imaginable forged tool, implement, and
object: bill hooks, axes, adzes, hoes, hammers, chisels, anchors, eel
spears, locomotive firing shovels, horseshoes and many more. The
names of some of the tools indicate the world-wide custom the firm
had: Russian miners hammers, Spanish bowl adzes, Australian half-bright chipping hoe, New Zealand sinking pick, Bechuana grubbing hoes, Peruvian hedge bills, to name a few. The detailed plates
provide patterns for hundreds of bill hooks for which the company was well known, some 79 axes, 46
adzes, 120 hammers, 80 hoes, 135 shovel patterns, and thousands of other objects.
An introduction by Richard Filmer gives a historical survey of the firm and goes into considerable descriptive detail about various items shown in the cataloge. The history of this forge
and company is fascinating. When Edward Ewell took lease of Wednesbury Forge in 1817

Shipping and Handling
Orders are shipped within 2 business days of receipt. In the event an item is out-of stock,we will ship
what we have and send the other item(s) upon their arrival. No additional handling fees will be charged
for backordered items.
1. Standard shipping and handling minimum ground shipping charge is $8.00
OR 8% of invoice subtotal (after any discounts). Ground packages will arrive within 4-5
business days. You must have a street address – UPS & FedEx do not deliver to post office

2. Media Mail shipping and handling charges are $6.00 for the first book plus $0.50
